In a world that seeks to destroy sexual purity, the battle for holiness has never been fiercer nor the stakes higher. Sexual immorality has devastated too many men, damaged too many families, and marred the gospel’s testimony too many times. Now is the time to prepare yourself to fight.
In Fight Like a Man, Emeal “E.Z.” Zwayne presents biblical truth for combatting the enemies of purity that seek to hold you captive in sin. Not content to just reveal your adversaries’ tactics, E.Z. also provides an arsenal of simple yet revolutionary strategies to equip you to conquer lust through the power of gospel-centered grace and the knowledge of God’s mind-blowing character. No matter your past, you can embrace the freedom available in Christ and the fullness of a life that honors God with every thought, word, and deed.
There is hope on the battlefield of purity. Fight like the man God created you to be and join the ranks of those who have fought this battle and emerged as true spiritual victors.
Ganske bra bok.
There are so many things I want to say about this book that from the outside looking in, that it would seem contrived. Why? Because I loved this book. Everything about it. In fact, I couldn't find anything wrong with it. Even with the great and dead preachers of the past I have always found something wrong that I didn't agree with. But not this one. It is absolutely flawless.
You can immediately tell that this book was written with the utmost care with the reader in mind, but even more so, for God's glory. It wasn't written overnight with pithy slogans and regurgitated sayings. This was a labor of love. This took a lot of time and patience with real life poured throughout it's pages. The editing is astounding, and whoever did it, needs aplause as well.
I chose the Kindle version of the book not because it was cheaper, but because this book is something I want to be reminded over and over again no matter where I am. Not that I can't remember anything in the book. Zwane does an incredible job summerizing in the last chapter. But, I want it by my side no matter where I go. I can have it in a hotel room, in a bathroom when I am battling temptation, or even read it while standing in line at the bank. I've highlighted and taken notes so much throughout that it looks like a coloring book. Pages and pages of highlights and notes so that when I look at these in the future, I will know how far I've come when I read this again.
Each chapter kept getting better, and the further I went, the more notes and highlights I made. Chapter 21: Crown, was my major a-ha moment for me. I dove headlong into my soul and realized many things about my life that caused me heartache in this area, and other areas as well. I realized that I was short-sighted not only in my walk with Christ, but life in general. Mixed with unworthiness of anything good, I was a pile of oatmeal at the end. This was a huge turning point for me, and I am grateful the Lord picked me up off the floor and gives me hope for my future.
It was also refreshing to see that there were no questions to ask the reader to reflect on the writing. You don't need it. If you sincerely read it, it will change your life. You don't need study questions. That would be lame. The text itself makes your mind go crazy and want more and more all on its own.
Taking the reader through the things that trip us up: the Devil, the flesh, and the world, and how to go to war with each on the battlefield was truly a work of art. It gave me hope throughout the pages, even right at the begining. This goes to the heart of why we as men stumble looking at pornography, but gives us practical tools to win the war. This is the go-to book for men to regain purity in their lives the way God intended though His Son, Jesus Christ. Buy this book and read it alongside your Bible, and you will have hope in your battle for purity.
On a personal note to the author: I can't wait to thank you in person this June as I attend Living Waters Ambassador's Academy. If this is your first book, I cannot wait to see what your others will be like. I can't imagine them being any better than this.
More than anything else, this is a book about the astounding love, grace, mercy, beauty, and forgiveness found in Christ Jesus for sinners. However, EZ leaves no room for excusing or indulging sin; he pairs abundant gospel truths with firm rebuke and exhortation for men to mortify sin and temptation in the strength of Christ, culminating, in my opinion, in the last two chapters, Christ and NOPE. I would recommend this book for every man that desires to pursue purity and holiness; it is both a treasure trove from which to store up encouragement and wisdom when the battles appear easy, and a reservoir of the glorious truth of the mercy and grace found in Christ when the battles are raging and even when some have been lost.
"Are you willing to stand with that kind of fortitude and fight like a man, my brother? Will you determine to stand and be counted?...Will you demonstrate character, courage, commitment, conviction, devotion, and loyalty? Will you sacrifice for the sake of others - like your wife, your children, your grandchildren, your parents, your siblings, your friends, your church family, the young people who look up to you as an example, and the older people who have invested their lives in you? And will you lay down your life, through death to self, for causes greater than yourself - like the testimony of the gospel and the glory of God?" p.19
"There is nothing more important in all life than for the child of God to fully grasp who Jesus really is. Understanding His nature, His attributes, His character, His ways, and His heart toward His redeemed people is paramount for any man of God who seeks to stand firm and fight victoriously in his battle against the devil, the flesh, and the world." p.246
"Not One Peek Even - because I love my Lord, I love my lady (my wife), I love my lineage (my children and grandchildren), I love His lambs (other Christians), and I love the lost (unbelievers)." p.253
"...the glory of your amazing God is a glory worth fighting for. So fight tenaciously, brother. Fight courageously. Fight relentlessly. Fight in the power that He faithfully and abundantly supplies. Fight! Fight like a man!" p.270
This book was extremely helpful for me. Not only did it allow me to view sexual sin as a battleground, but it also allowed me to discover a nuanced meaning of faith I hadn't considered. E.Z. discusses one of the biggest issues men, and women, face when battling with sexual sin: We forget what it means to act out of faith, and instead act from our feelings in the moment of temptation. This of course makes sinning inevitable, as acting out of our feelings (the spirit of the flesh) is far easier than the contrary. Nevertheless, acting out of faith (believing in God's promises for your life and in His character), despite our feelings, not because of them, is the only way to overcome sexual sin. As a consequence, it also leads to immense spiritual growth in our relationship and communion with God, leading to even more strength and peace in the face of temptation and adversity: For where God dwells, sin cannot. But unfortunately, due to His nature, the reverse is also true. If God is close, we will not want to give into temptation. But if we do give in, we will not want to return to God for repentance and risk beginning the cycle of habitual sin again. Therefore, whether you are being tempted, in the midst of giving in, or in the aftermath of sin, return immediately to Jesus who is sympathetic and loving, having lived with the same temptations but without sin.
Supporting quotations:
"A person demonstrating true faith responds with actions that reflect a sincere belief in what God has said. And they do this despite what they may think or feel" (56).
"He told us that we do this by our works—by what we do in connection with what we claim to believe" (57).
"We mistakenly conclude that because we don’t think or feel that we have faith, we can’t do what’s right, and at this point, we begin to stray. However, this is the exact juncture where we can show our faith by our works" (58).
There are many more nuggets of wisdom within this book relating to drawing closer to God to combat sexual sin (Spiritual practices of prayer, mediation, fellowship, and evangelism), as well as empowerment through the knowledge of Jesus' grace, the eternal consequences of unrepentant sin, and the heavenly rewards given to those who resist temptation for the glory of God.
Here is a great piece of inspiration from the beginning of the book:
"There is no porn user so enslaved that Jesus cannot set him or her free. There is no struggle for purity so intense that Jesus’ grace cannot win the battle. There is no consequence so steep that Jesus’ power cannot carry you through. Jesus’ grace to change you is stronger than pornography’s power to destroy you. Jesus’ grace is stronger than your own desires to watch sex. While there is no hope for you in looking at pornography, there is all the hope in the universe when you look to God and His grace" (23).
Well there is very little I would Completely disagree with here. These are just 1 person's conclusions. And it is written in a way that steers you towards his perspective. There are biological There are biological processes at work here that were not addressed adequately. Ie. Brain chemistry, bonding vs pleasure responses, self stimulation as a healthy component of being a single man and for older men. Not everything is triggered by lust nor should every urge be ignored. This book may be more helpful for some married men. But the "purity" notion expressed here against a god given sexual drive for the single man is extreme and not well supported or scriptural. Ie there is no scripture strictly forbidding limited self -stimulatory behavior. And yes that can be accomplished with out fuel ing an out of control lust factor. Too much To go into. Perhaps a book is in order from the perspective of an older now single and not sexualy active Christian male .
And He died for all, so that they who live would no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf. - 2 Corinthians 5:15 (LSB)
I've heard E.Z. on the Living Waters pod a few times, then in an interview with Costi Hinn, which is why I picked up this book. This is a great book for fighting sin in general and anyone could benefit from reading. I appreciated E.Z.'s heart and gospel focus in how he spoke about this topic. He clearly cares about the glory of God. While there's practical help as well, this just encouraged me in holiness and to care what God cares about.
E.Z. speaks with clear care for his reader. He's also raised teenagers into adulthood, and speaks from both experience and deep knowledge/conviction of the truths he presents.
No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man, but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. - 1 Corinthians 10:13 (LSB)
There can never be too many books about sexual purity for men. This one is the quintessential book on the subject, in my opinion. E.Z. is insightful, pointed, pulling no punches, surgical in his application of the Word of God, and yet as conversational as if you were sitting across from him at a coffee shop.
Every Christian man who wants to pursue godliness and follow his Lord should read this book. It is essential. Godliness and living a sexual immoral lifestyle in any way are mutually exclusive. Purity must be fought for, and the discipline of purity must be regularly maintained, like a soldier's service weapon. A book like this needs be in the hands of Christian men today. It's too important an issue to ignore or lackadaisically dismiss. "Fight Like A Man" has been transformative in my walk with the Lord; through the application of its principles, paired with Scripture, I am seeing daily fruit - thanks be to God. I wish I had this book many years ago, but I'm grateful I have it now.
An excellent and very masculine resource and some of the best stuff I’ve read on the topic of sexual purity. Zwayne’s analysis is firmly grounded in scripture where he lays the groundwork for really understanding the enemy’s strategy and our own weaknesses biblically. His overall approach is deeply personal and refreshingly practical in that he manages to equip the reader with several mnemonic tools that are meant to be used in the decisive moments of temptation, when it really matters. Most importantly, Zwayne is being a valuable Paraclete in not shying away from directly addressing and effectively exhorting Christian men who have formed a habit of compromising with sin.
As a Christian man, one of the biggest battles in my walk with CHRIST is sin. Of all the sins, lust, sexual desires are primarily the strongest. This book tackles these sins biblically and in a way that all men and women should understand. I highly recommend this book to laymen and those men in the ministry. From studies that I have seen, this is a problem in the church and one we must overcome in CHRIST.
An important book for Christian men facing and dealing with temptation in the area of personal purity. The author describes the lies and pitfalls of the different battlegrounds (the devil, the flesh, the world) and shows how to fight against these and overcome them, going all the way back to creation and five other "Cs" (cross, crisis, crown, crowd, Christ) as helpful reminders of how these areas speak into situations of temptation and help a believer resist and overcome temptation.
This book provides real life scenarios that all men find themselves in from time to time. You will find honesty and it provides a “pull no punches” approach with the knockout blows that only Jesus can give to overcome men’s sinful struggles of lust. Highly recommend this book to all men.
Yes, read this. It is not a light read but is direct about the role purity plays in a man’s life. For me, it didn’t go too far into the path out of when you have made a mess of purity in your life but does give an opportunity for a “from this point forward” approach to purity and protecting our heart, minds, eyes from lust. Worth a read.
Fight Like a man is a good blend of biblical counsel and practical counsel. Not only is this a good book to use when counseling others, it is a battle plan. It depicts a Christian man as a soldier who is at battle, and his enemies are the world, the flesh and the devil. His artillery is Christ and the blessings that flow from salvation.
Great resource for men (and women!) looking to walk closer with Jesus and fight the good fight against lust. The author provides some very practical tools for people to use in that battle as well as a mountain of scripture to back it up. The anecdotes and alliteration are a bit over used, but they can easy be skimmed if they aren’t helping you along your journey.
This book was a joy to read. It is filled with biblical truth and wisdom. Although the book is written specifically for men who want to live a life of personal purity, I think the contents will be beneficial to any person who seeks to walk by the Sprit.
I also appreciate the doctrinal soundness of this book.
the guidance from the book was helpful. I want to keep coming back to the book whenever I need clarifications on how to navigate my life as a man in the world filled with distractions and temptations
Lots of great material and takeaways from this book to apply which will and has helped in the battle all of us men face. 4/5 because it did start to feel repetitive in some parts, but overall I highly recommend this book.
A very valuable tool in the fight that so many men lose. Not just worldly men but sadly men of God. The practical application of Godly inspired living and biblical grounding can help you win this battle brothers. We’ve got this and Christ has got us!!!
This book is a tough read! Not in a grammatical way, but because it is exactly what the title says it is: A bold look at personal (sexual) purity. Zwayne understands all too well the issues that men face in terms of a chastity and a Biblical, Christian lifestyle. I am sure I am not the only one who has read this and thought it hits a little too close to home.
Zwayne does go beyond merely diagnosing the problem, and does offer a way to get back to the life we ought to be living. As captives to sin, he knows it is not always easy, but it is doable.
Every honest, Christian male needs to read this. Actually the dishonest ones need to also, as they need to see themselves and move on to purity as well.
