The Visit is a coming-of-age tale set in 1990s Slovenia. Luna’s journey takes her from the safe confines of her high school out into the real world, where a failed relationship and struggles to keep up with her new life outside of the family home catch up to her.
Told in a lusciously dreamy hybrid poetry-prose, Kralj masterfully allows the reader to drift with Luna as she unravels, all with the background of a post-war shattered country. Society changes, as does a life, as Luna must come to terms with her deepest self before she is ready to ascend.
Beautifully written and thought-provoking, The Visit is an excellent read for both young and old.
