But main occurance happens with Pia - Journalist Pia Jani, the main character, and Aditya Narain both explore the mysteries surrounding the Somnath Temple. Through a maze of mysterious clue, Pia and Aditya embark on a quest. 🍂⛅
• What is the most exciting is when they got a • mysterious message. This particular message reveals about a power to change the alley of history. Every chapter has a ton of original thrillers that are identified by a date, time, and location. The characters are interestingly drawn by the author, giving each aspect a lively appearance. The characters go above in their efforts to uphold the historical connections in this book.🌩️🌿
• Readers find it easy to become invested in Pia and Aditya's journey because it is both intellectually and emotionally compelling. When fiction gets blended with facts, history, science and religion, it makes a heady cocktail of mystery so engaging to read that it gets almost unputdownable, reading 'The Somnath Cipher' felt exactly like that. The story starts with several plots running parallel all linked together into a single storyline of myth and history. I started reading this book with least expectations yet it proved me wrong in every way possible. I was finding it difficult to get into the book at first but when I gave it time I couldn't stop myself from reading. The enigmatic characters with their elusive futures and historical anecdotes made it a perfect read to recharge me. I couldn't stop marveling at the fact how seamlessly everything is blended that it felt all too real and happening in front of me, as if I was present in the story. Although it has a fast paced story, it takes time to get fully immersed into it. I enjoyed the intricately woven plot, but I would have preferred more character development. Nonetheless the character sketches were terrific.
Coming to the best part, the writing. I think the writing here created good suspense, thrill and mystery, as the characters inch closer to solving the mystery, it gets more looped and interesting. The blend of ancient history and secret codes, with little questions and sarcasm to fuel the reader's imagination, I devoured this book in a single sitting, the rest is history. Both the quality and style of writing is noteworthy. Recommended to all mystery lovers, especially to those who enjoy mysteries revolving around Hindu mythologies.

“Open your minds, my friends. We all fear what we do not understand.” – Dan Brown, The Lost Symbol.”
I love reading thrillers which revolve around mythology and intertwining of history with religion with scientific elements involved in it. I have always been a fan of Dan Brown and Ashwin Sanghi Books, but from now on, I am a fan of Priyanka Narain too. The level of research which this lady has put into this book is crystal clear and is reflected so well through the pages of this beautiful book. It is not simple to write books like The Somnath Ciper as the responsibility which the author has to bear while penning down such a book is extremely high and It is safe to say that she is worn the responsibility well and done complete justice to Lord Shiva and his eternal Shakti.
The book starts off with the first of the many attacks on the Somnath Mandir by the Mahmud of Ghazni who destroyed the temple and the idols and looted the treasure. Or did he? The book then jump forwards to 2020 wherein the AIS while excavating the Site 4 of the Somnath Mandir makes an extra ordinary discovery which draws the attention of the infamous Pakistani ISI. What follows further forms the plot of the book.
The book is extremely well written and manages to grip the attention of the reader and can be completed over the weekend. Simple language and exemplary research is what sets the book apart from other books from the similar genre. The character development is on point. However, I felt that the book could have easily been extended for 10 – 20+ pages for closing all the loose ends and that the print in the book could have been much better.
The biggest take away for me from this book is that Priyanka Narain has definitely influenced me to pick up study material / books to read on Somnath Mandir and its history and also the history of our religion per say.
Highly recommend it to each and every history and conspiracy buff <3
This book is an exhilarating journey that takes you through lost eras & distant places, to mysterious cults and their secrets. The tale crafted by the author is full of surprises, plot twists, Sanskrit clues, hidden codes, and ancient legends. The story begins with the trepidation of forces that try to diffuse Mahmud Ghazni's most infamous raid. At present, an anonymous tip about Somnath's deeply buried secret sets off a chain of events, starting with an immediate excavation of 4 sites, the killing of the former chief of ASI who headed this sensational project, and the death of a professor who inherited the key to an ancient secret. An unlikely duo of journalist Pia Jani and the enigmatic Aditya Narain team up in this chase against time, making unexpected allies and narrowly escaping capture & death, decoding ciphers & cryptic clues to solve archaic riddles, with unscrupulous enemies sniffing their trail for the fulfillment of selfish agenda. An exiled Nawab is begrudgingly smuggled back to his homeland, a symbologist outwitting his tenacious captors against all odds, a faceless mastermind pulling the strings, and a shocking betrayal no one would see coming. I really loved the fast-paced narrative with each chapter starting with a date, time, place, and a countdown leading to a satisfying climax and logical epilogue. The action scenes were well-written, with vivid descriptions, pop culture references, memorable quotes and well-researched facts from reliable sources. Verdict: This book is India's answer to Dan Brown, and a must-read if you love adventure and reading about scientific facts hidden in ancient legends.
At Somnath university, a professor Nila Shukla sends out a ‘help me’ message to renowned journalist Pia to find her grandson Aditya. History and its secrets are the central theme in this story which if known today can be dangerous for present day society. At this point, our heroine Pia comes into play! In this book, Aditya is the main character as well as the connection to everything else that has happened at Somnath.
This task of keeping quiet about the temple's treasure revelation that runs into billions hidden in an underwater secret pit that been there for centuries falls on the shoulders of two people- Pia and Aditya. Priyanka Narain’s storytelling is just amazing as every chapter leaves you with an itch on your fingers and you go straight to the next page. I am staggered by how much research Narain put into our old texts, religious books, shlokas. Hinduism: The Eternal Religion? Pia warns readers against what she says is one rule she followed when swimming.-Don’t swim in unfamiliar water. You see these things like currents or something beneath it.
The author’s outstanding narrative style brings to light every chapter, unraveling suspenseful layers that grip you from the beginning to the end. This novel is a perfect blend of action, history and mystery with surprising turns that make it an interesting book to read throughout.
"Somnath Cipher" by Priyanka Narain is an enthralling experience blended with history, religion, and modernity.
The story took its pace when the news came about Site 4 of Somnath and went viral with the tweet of journalist Pia Jani. There's a secret related to the iconic Somnath temple that has ties to the post-independence reconstruction of the temple and hundreds of years ago's distraction by Ghazni and other invaders.
It gets more intriguing when prominent personality professor Nila and ASI ex-director Vedraj get killed by saving the secret related to the Somnath temple and its history.
But before dying, she sent a message for help to her grandson and journalist Pia Jani, which made them go on an adventure and unravel the mysteries by fighting all the odds and enemies from the country and outside.
From characterization, plot, and research to perfectly presenting the religious minute details, the author has done a tremendous job of bringing to life some facts in this intriguing story that must be known by mankind.
The ending left me buzzing. I think it might have been seductive. If that's the thing, I can't wait for it.
A well written narrative that blends history, mystery, and personal exploration. The book is about the intriguing history of the Somnath Temple, one of India's most revered shrines which was often targeted by invaders throughout history. The story unravels the mysteries surrounding the temple's legends and the treasure it is rumored to hold. It was very engaging and then I was googling about the information provided in the book. And yes it is well-researched work. Feels like kinda bringing to light various historical accounts and legends associated with the temple.
The characters in this book embark on a journey to uncover the truth behind the temple's secrets. I rarely pick a historical book. I was wondering how I will ever complete this book when I was picking this out. But I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. The blend of past and present made the narrative so engaging regarding the historical contexts.
I would say it is a thoughtful read that explores Indian history and mythology, wrapped in a suspenseful narrative.
Finally first 5 star from this year !!! sensational writing - priyanka has pulled out a dan brownesque story with somnath as background with this one !! the facts keep you both intrigued and glued to the story!! every now and then there is a clue popping - last 100 pages gives enough action to make it a great thriller - highly recommended for mystery and thriller lovers.
The book is amazing and I'm one of the few who got meet the author in a zoom call and it was a fantastic experience.
Hearing Priyanka talk about the behind the scenes, the insights involved, I get it after reading the complete book, that it is heavily influenced by Dan Brown's books and I love all of his books.
And I'm not saying it is a copycat of that because it got the same vibe and same intense adventure but the topic or the core part of Somnath Cipher is complete different and I can see the research and time it might have taken Priyanka for this book, it is very very detailed in the history of Somnath Temple.
And I also got to learn something new by reading this book, like the importance of number 108, the sum of the parity of fibonacci sequence come out to be 108, I was confused by that and I tried adding the fibonacci sequence numbers but got a different result, but I forgot the word parity in the start and now I know what parity means 😝👻.
Also the characters in Somnath Cipher are very intriguing and the book just tells you enough to be excoted to know more about them. And our main characters Aditya and Pia running around solving ciphers and clues left behind by Aditya's Nani aka Grandmother meanwhile two other parties are also interested in what the treasure is running after them. It is big world but small in certain sense.
I absolutely love the book and if Priyanka publish other books in this same genre I would be one of the first in line to read it.
You know that feeling when you pick up a book and it seems to have a gravitational pull, refusing to let you go? That's exactly what happened when I started reading "The Somnath Cipher" by Priyanka Pathak Narain. This book is more than just a historical thriller; it's a rollercoaster ride through India's rich history, mythology, and modern-day intrigue.
From the very first page, Narain's masterful storytelling had me hooked. Picture this: a cryptic message tied to the ancient and majestic Somnath Temple, an urgent call for help from a professor, and a duo of protagonists—Pia Jani, a sharp-witted journalist, and her childhood friend Aditya Narayan—who are thrust into a whirlwind adventure. Their quest to unravel the secrets of the Somnath Temple is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally engaging, making it easy to invest in their journey.
One of the things that truly stands out in this book is the depth and development of the characters. Pia and Aditya are not just two-dimensional figures; they are richly developed with compelling backstories and motivations that add significant depth to the narrative. Their dynamic is electrifying, filled with moments of tension, camaraderie, and even hints of romantic tension that keep you guessing.
Narain's attention to detail in depicting the historical and cultural aspects of India is simply commendable. As a reader, I was transported to the heart of the settings, be it the majestic Somnath Temple or the bustling streets of modern-day India. The vivid descriptions are so immersive that you can almost feel the cool stone of the temple under your fingertips or hear the cacophony of the streets. This seamless blend of past and present not only educates but also enriches the reading experience.
But let’s talk about the plot (spoiler alert, but no spoilers chill!)—the twists and turns are like a well-choreographed dance, each step perfectly timed to keep you on the edge of your seat. Just when you think you've figured it out, Narain throws in a curveball that leaves you reeling and eager for more. It’s like being in a constant state of suspense, your heart racing as Pia and Aditya race against time to decode the ancient mysteries.
What sets "The Somnath Cipher" apart is its perfect balance of action, history, and mystery. The narrative is fast-paced, with moments of high tension and suspense expertly woven throughout the story. It’s not just a book; it’s an experience that keeps you up late at night, telling yourself, "Just one more chapter," until you realize you've read half the book in one sitting.
I’ve found myself talking about "The Somnath Cipher" for days after finishing it so much so my friends have started calling me Dr Somnath (I know, you won't believe it!). It’s one of those books that leaves a lasting impression, with scenes and characters that linger in your mind. The blend of historical intrigue and modern-day adventure is so well-executed that it feels like watching a thrilling movie unfold in your mind.
And would I recommend this book to my friends? Absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt. Whether you're a fan of historical fiction or thrillers, or just love a good story, "The Somnath Cipher" has something for everyone. Priyanka Pathak Narain has crafted a masterpiece that is sure to captivate and entertain, making it a must-read and a sure conversation starter for anyone who dives into its pages. So go ahead, pick up "The Somnath Cipher"—you won't be disappointed!

My 💭: [27/10/24 12.39 PM]
This book time travelled me to 2012, when I devoured my first Dan Brown book, The Da Vinci Code. I remember my world getting tilted by the world of secret codes, symbols and ciphers amalgamated with religion and breaking edge science. I would like to thank @author to pay such an amazing homage to my favourite thriller book in the form of 'The Somnath Cipher'. 🙌
First of all, I would like the readers to know that this book ended on a cliffhanger, so we might be getting a sequel. I really really hope so, for my curiosity's sake 🤭. I mean, how can I be aloof to another hidden treasure? 🤩
Okay, so as @books said in her review, the narration style was heavily influenced by Dan Brown's books. That same rush, a constant feeling of foreboding and something sinister waiting to happen, the countdown till some D-Day event, secret identities, solving of codes and ciphers - you name it. The only difference is that this story is about India's lost mythology, science and religion and it is spaced over India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Never in my wildest imagination did I ever think that our history has such secretive stuff and the author has done a brilliant job of researching all of it and presented it to us in the form of this book. I'm definitely spending some quality YouTube time to know the real history of the Somnath Temple. I mean, I always thought that Ramayana and Mahabharata are fiction, but what if they are not? 🤯
Coming to the characters, I REALLY liked Aditya. I mean he is the man of of every girl's dreams - street smart, sharp minded and with a secret occupation. Next to him, Manav faded in comparison (sorry not sorry 🙈). Pia on the other hand irritated me a little bit in the beginning because of her stupidity at certain actions, especially because she's an experienced field journo. Honestly, I was feeling Aditya could have handled the treasure hunt single handedly at the beginning. I mean, why did she call Manav in a secret mission out of the blue and almost revealed Aditya's secret out loud💀? But later on she somewhat redeemed herself in my eye because of her quick wit and tenacity. But if I'm honest, I wouldn't have minded if she got killed off, sorry Pia 😅!
Now for the twists, the book is filled with them. So every chapter felt like an adrenaline filled adventure and I couldn't stop reading it whole day yesterday (even in front of guests 🙈) till I finished it. I'll be honest, some repetitive lines could have been edited out. Also, being a seasoned thriller addict, I had correctly suspected the culprit midway through the book. And because I'm not a religiously aligned person, the final revelation felt anticlimatic to me. I might have been expecting too much because of the Dan Brown vibes. But since I see most people loved the ending twists, I'm sure you guys will enjoy it too.
All in all, I feel like I was really in some epic adventure yesterday. Sadly now, back to the real world 🫤.
This book is about a temple in India built thousand years before and has an incredible past. This was built and destroyed and rebuild and then destroyed creating an enigmatic stories which will palpitate your heart and you will quest for more of histories. This is one of the rich temple with richest history which was lost just to be found by few history enthusiasts. Somnath Temple is believed to be build by Lord Krishna.
Somnath Cipher is about the treasure to be found using the code. The treasure was preserved and protected by Dr. Nila 's Father and after his demise the code was shared with her. But she shared the same with her daughter and son in law and they were killed soon after. That's why Dr. Nila sent her only grandson Aditya to America at a very young age to keep him away from all this. But with Nila's life in danger Aditya had to come back just to find Dr. Nila dead. There are other major important characters like Pia Jani, an investigative journalist taking keen interest in history close to Dr. Nila, Rahul Pia's friend and an art conneissiuer who helped Aditya to decode the treasure. There were so many villains, in real who were in this story running after Aditya and Pia to get the code with the treasure.
Had this been in the history book of students then this would have created more historian, researchers, archaeologist , excavators etc. Going back to years when I was in school and I chose history I remember a close relative commented on my choices of how this subject is boring and doesn't have any relevance in present times and this subject won't help me pay my bills😂. Though I know my interest and quite sure about it but I couldn't justify. Had these been in the books than I could have justified, I really wonder, and ponder how this education system needs a make over and history could be an applied arts to make it more relevant and interesting .
So many related events and informations were also written in this book, like about Nalanda University which was burnt with 9000 manuscript.
This book is recommended to every Indian. You get to know about the rich cultural heritage along with the intellectual property those were destroyed in those days. Most of the scientific inventions were done by Indians but everything was destroyed. So many resources were carried away alongwith intellectual properties by foreigners. This book will make you proud as an indian.
This book is recommended to every citizen, this will make you proud,I promise. For every Non Indian for enlightening you about this country and culture.
After reading this I would love to read some more of history. Guys do recommend me in the comments below.

🪷I was intrigued from the beginning. The plotline was engaging and the characters which are also nicely plotted, the starting was very intriguing that picks up readers interest. I really enjoyed the chapter where Ramana Subramanian was detailing about the connection of science and religion before being kidnapped also the part where Aditya and Pia were in Jambuvanti Caves and discussing Chaturanga. A fast paced narrative with a perfect blend of twists and turns that keeps the readers hooked till the end and the aura of suspicions, mystery being well blended in the air as the story progresses. The language used was easy and can be easily comprehensible even by beginners. Overall this book was like a roller coaster ride and would recommend to readers who love reading thrillers and mystery. 🪙
In the Somnath Cipher, Priyanka Narain gives readers an entrancing window into a world of historical mysteries, present-day thriller and complicate enigmas. Set against the backdrop of history and modernity, Naran’s novel combines historical fiction with a fascinating narrative that is full of excitement. The story revolves around a mysterious puzzle connected with the famous Somnath temple, which is an ancient Indian building steeped in history and many myths. During her research work on this, Aanya Mehta who is a smart historian comes across it. It starts as a scholarly quest that develops into thrilling escapade for hidden wealths, secret cults and race against time. Narain’s writing stands out for its intricate attention to every detail and her ability to seamlessly integrate historical background into an engaging modern plot. This novel has good pacing: alternating between moments of high tension and thoughtful passages that delve into the characters’ pasts and motivations.
In terms of the book, one thing is for sure that stands out and that is its convoluted plotting. The cipher itself is a key theme in this piece of fiction and Narain does a great job at making the puzzle interesting as well as comprehendible to all. Consequently, the decoding of the cipher results into an intriguing mix of intellectual challenge tinged with momentum hence turning it into a page-turner, which can attract mystery lovers and historical thrillers fans.
The characters are well-drawn; Aanya Mehta is especially well-portrayed. Her journey involves external exploration but there’s more to it than that. We witness her confronting her past self while she changes over time. There are other important characters who bring depth and complexity to the story such as a charming lover boy and an intimidating rival.
Another remarkable aspect of The Somnath Cipher is its setting. It palpably evokes the contrast between ancient world and modernity through capturing the mystique of Somnath Temple coupled with vibrant energy emanating from contemporary cities. Captivatingly descriptive passages enhances our engagement.
If there is a critique to be made, it might be that some of the historical elements are a bit simplified for the sake of the narrative, which could leave readers looking for a deeper exploration of the historical context somewhat wanting. However, this does not significantly detract from the overall enjoyment of the book. In no way does this make the book any less interesting.
The Somnath Cipher is a book that makes you forget about time and surroundings and gives you such a tantalizing reading experience that you'll want more of it even after the last page is turned. The author wastes no time in divining straight into the heart of the mystery. No beating around the bush. No unnecessary dragging. Just pure thrill. She does an excellent job of building tension and uncertainty, making the reader feel the same sense of urgency and fear that the protagonists do.
Another aspect I would like to mention is the historical references. From the Ghazni attack to the partition ploy regarding the Somnath region, everything finds its home in the book. And none of them are irrelevant. The detailed descriptions of ancient codes and symbols are not only fascinating but also essential to the plot. These elements add a layer of depth and authenticity to the story, and I found myself deeply immersed in the narrative.
The important characters are properly developed. Pia and Aditya's dedication to uncovering the mystery, despite the numerous obstacles and dangers they face, is commendable. And I would particularly like to appreciate how the author avoided the clichéd romantic subplot between Pia and Aditya. Focus on the quest. Nothing more, nothing less. The antagonist in the story is worth mentioning. He's brutal, has no hesitation in killing, and is merciless. A tall figure with an intimidating physique and eyes of different colors.
The only letdown was a twist regarding a particular character in the climax. A regular reader will see it coming without any doubt. It just didn't blend seemlessly with the narrative and was more like a bump in a rather smooth ride for me. I'm not saying that the climax was underwhelming. It was good and gave a proper and satisfying closure to the plot.
Overall, this book has a terrific blend of history, mystery, and thrill. This is a truly unputdownable read that will appeal to fans of historical fiction, thrillers, and anyone with an interest in India’s rich cultural heritage. Whether you are a history buff, a thriller enthusiast, or simply looking for a captivating read, then Somnath Cipher is where your quest ends.
The epilogue hints at a potential sequel, suggesting that Pia and Aditya's journey is far from over and that there are more mysteries to be uncovered. And I am eagerly looking forward to what comes next.
The Somnath Cipher Author: Priyanka Narain My Rating- ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My Review- “Life is infinitely stranger than anything the mind of man could invent…”
A thousand-year-old secret. A treasure worth billions. A quest for the truth.
With just the above three lines I was intrigued to pick up this book and beyond my expectations this one of the best thrillers I have ever read throughout my reading journey. As the blurb speaks the best I’m not going to add further spoilers to the book. With well researched facts and intriguing fiction with the blend of Indian history and ancient scriptures this book keeps the readers at the edge with every turn of the page. When the protagonists Piya and Aditya were struck with the mystery of Somnath’s treasure, their journey throughout felt like a thrilling adventurous movie which can be seen with the naked eye.
Nothing feels better than a thriller blended with facts and history and the author added much more magic with hidden clues, stories of Indian Gods with lots of twists and turns that left my mind either with surprise or with shock and in either ways it was quite a satisfying, interesting and action packed journey. I like how the author had shown through her writing how civilised and rich culture that India has which was always neglected in glorifying the invaders. With the codes she created in the book it makes us realise how far our ancestors' scientific knowledge on different aspects of the universe had with them and taught them throughout centuries just to be forgotten and burned by the invaders.
This book is not only intriguing but also thought provoking in certain aspects. Even for the people who feel history's boring, the author's narrative style will never give that vibe for them. This book gives the vibes of thrill, adventure ,action, strong characters(Pia is my favourite and strongest women protagonist) ,adrenaline rush with the knowledge that was neglected and forgotten. And coming to the climax, I can feel the heat towards the end of the book with twists one after the other that I couldn't think of any other at that moment until I finish the whole. I must be thankful for the author’s fast paced writing for this otherwise I would have gone crazy at the moment…
I highly recommend r all my bookish friends to read this book . I'm sure this suggestion of mine is something you won't regret for sure. Happy Reading ❤️ 😊.
When a book sets its premise around a powerful symbol like the Somnath temple—one that has stood witness to centuries of invasion, destruction, and rebirth—it carries with it the burden of history, faith, and cultural identity. Unfortunately, this book Somnath Cipher falls short of this potential.
Let’s begin with the positives. The concept is promising—a thriller set around one of India’s most iconic temples has all the ingredients for a compelling narrative: mystery, geopolitics, espionage, and heritage. The pace picks up in parts, and the fictional cipher angle has moments that intrigue. The attempt to blend mythology with modern-day conspiracy is ambitious and could have worked wonders with the right treatment.
However, the execution leaves much to be desired. The book is unnecessarily long(394 pages), with stretched subplots that dilute the impact of the core narrative. Characters often feel underdeveloped, and the dialogues lack the sharpness expected in a genre that thrives on tension and wit.
What’s most disappointing, though, is the superficial treatment of Somnath itself. For a book that anchors itself on such a culturally and historically significant monument, the lack of deep research is glaring. There is little attempt to explore the iconography, temple architecture, or the multiple rebuildings of Somnath over centuries. The temple is reduced to a mere backdrop rather than being a living, breathing character in the story. This not only weakens the book's authenticity but also feels like a disservice to the gravity of the subject.
There’s also a missed opportunity in capturing the philosophical and nationalistic dimensions of Somnath’s resurrection post-Independence—a moment of historical and spiritual assertion that could have added real weight to the plot.
In essence, Somnath Cipher is a thriller that could have been much more. With tighter editing, deeper research, and greater reverence for its setting, it might have risen to the occasion. As it stands, it's a forgettable read that barely scratches the surface of a profound legacy.
This book had a potentially powerful idea let down by poor research, uneven writing, and a failure to honour the sanctity and depth of Somnath. Recommended only if you're looking for a light thriller and not a deep dive into Indian history or heritage.
'The Somnath Cipher,’ by Priyanka Pathak Narain, is a gripping thriller that takes you on an adventure turning back the pages of history. Blending historical fiction, mythology, adventure and mystery, the author weaves an incredible story full of shocking twists and turns.
The story is a historical fiction revolving around the iconic temple of Somnath in the state of Gujarat. The story begins with a surprising discovery at the site of the historic temple, setting of chain of events that threatens to change the course of history. Journalist Pia Jani and her enigmatic ally, Aditya Narain, soon get involved in the affair. Right from the start, the story grips you with the historical background detailing the invasion of the temple, a thousand years back. What follows is a fast-paced thriller with conspiracies, untold legends, cryptic clues and a series of twists and turns that will keep you guessing about what happens next. There are different powers vying for the secret and it eventual leads to unexpected thrilling encounters spanning the globe.
What I loved the most is the incredible research involving the history and ancient beliefs surrounding the Somnath temple. The writer has used these myths and legends to build an incredible engaging mystery which feels realistic due to the historical touch. The narrative is fast-paced, keeping you hooked throughout, with the multiple narratives. The characters are well crafted, each with his own motivations and detailed backstories; be it Pia or even the Nawab. The geopolitical angle between India and Pakistan adds a thrilling twist.
Overall, "The Somnath Cipher" is a great read for those who enjoy historical fiction and thrillers. With a solid premise, incredibly researched plot and some well written characters, this is one story you should not miss.
How often do you read thriller novels about Bharat’s millennium-old mysterious past with real, reported events present and enjoy it?
The author has spun a tale surrounding the history of the Somnath Temple, which was plundered by Mahmud of Ghazni in AD 1026, and had been robbed for its greatest treasure and heritage. The temple's past links back to the times when Bharat had numerous invaders who repeatedly attacked and destroyed the temple’s architecture and thus its heritage in the hopes of looting the treasures. Over the years, the Somnath Temple has been rebuilt various times for all the faith of our ancestors and believers of today’s age.
Were the treasures truly raided? Or were they secured? Why was the Somnath Temple targeted so much—for devotion, treasure, or something else entirely? Why Somnath? Read the book to find out!
Some tropes: - based on India’s history - fast-paced thriller with a ticking time bomb - adventurous quest - archeological references/glimpses (love this) - Da Vinci Code x Indiana Jones as promised
I loved the author’s writing style. The chapters are short, crisp, easy-to-understand with facts here and there. It took me some time to keep up with so many characters and their contributions in decoding the Somnath Cipher book for us readers. But this book is just mind-blowing! While reading, I could imagine everything playing out like an action-thriller movie, with time ticking in the background, in front of my eyes. Better yet, I was transported to their universe.
The characters each have their roles to play. I personally loved the depth of many characters like Nila, Aditya, Nawab, Pia, and Ved. I'm still fixated on the small scenes about Sharabha, Durga, and the hacker. And the villain..let's not forget him. The author has done a commendable job in writing this novel.
Perfect for readers who would love to read a fast-paced thriller novel with a pinch of mythology, a journalist's hunger for truth and story, a grandson’s quest on getting his legacy back, and a villain set on protagonists’s trails with mysterious secrets on the verge of spillage and politics in frame, anything could go wrong, but hey, we, the readers, live for these plot twists and quests only!
While reading this book, just one question was striking my mind, “who says that an Indian author can’t write thriller books like Dan Brown?” And I think, you will also feel this same question while reading this book. In her debut novel, the author Priyanka Narain made a masterpiece that no words can express it. I am just spellbound. Especially, how she entangled ancient Indian science and codes with the story, that will increase a huge interest among the youths on ancient Indian culture and civilization. It will make the reader conscious about how much our ancestors were advanced in science and technology and smash the colonial narratives. Unthinkable it is! The story starts thousand years ago, when the Mahmud of Ghazni was about to invade India to loot the treasures of Somnath temple and desecrate it. A spy named Vimal informed Lord Gorakhnath about all of these. By the idea of Lord Gorakhnath, a part of the treasure of the Somnath temple was shifted to a secret place. The whole story revolves around this hidden treasure. On December 2020, the government of India started a project to investigate some plots related to the Somnath temple. The news reaches Pakistan and the ISI starts a mission to find the treasure before Indian administration. They sent a deadly ISI agent named Abbas to India. Prof. Nila Roy knew some great secrets and she sends a secret letter to journalist Pia Jani containing some riddles. Then, Abbas killed Nila Roy. After reaching Nila’s place, Pia meets Aditya, the grandson of Nila. Then they started a mission to decode the letter and many ancient riddles one after another. But, their journey is full of dangers. On many occasions, they just escaped from the grasp of Death. So, this adventure becomes breathtaking. One thing, that I disliked is that once, the Shiva Lingam is described as phallus. But according to Shiva Puran, the Shiva Lingam is actually a fire-column. You will get to know more about it by reading the Shiva Puran. If you love to read adventurous thrillers, this book is a must read for you. If you are interested about ancient India’s symbols and culture, you must read this as the author’s knowledge about them is astonishing! I am eagerly waiting for the next book by this author. Jay Somnath!
Synopsis: When Pia Jani, the renowned journalist receives a plea for help from professor Nila of Somnath University, she realizes that a thousand year old secret is at stake. She, along with her childhood friend, Aditya Narayan, has to solve a riddle, leading to a treasure, which is bound to endanger them as well. Review: The blurb captured my attention at once, when I realised that it is a thriller rooted in Indian history. As the blurb says, it is rightfully India's Da Vinci Code. The author has based her plot on the events centred around the Somnath temple, post the partition of India. The date and time stamps and the writing style aids in maintaining the suspense and keeps the reader at the edge of the seat. The characterisation of every individual has been churned out well. Nila, the intelligent professor, Pia Jani, the theology enthusiast and award winning journalist, Aditya Narayan, the guy with great survival instincts and Manav, the rich boyfriend. The author takes us on a thrilling ride through Indian history, religion, symbolism, science and architecture. The narrative aroused in me, a yearning to revisit Indian history and visit the architectural marvels in person. This is one of those books that's gonna keep you up all night, if you are a thriller and history enthusiast like me.That being said, there are certain things I wish the author could have had avoided. The author uses the word 'Islamic sword' and 'Muslim' invaders multiple times, while describing the Somnath temple destruction. They didn't destroy these temples just because they followed Islam, but mainly to loot our wealth, and in the process tried to reiterate the iconoclastic status among the then established muslims. Considering the changed political scenario in India, challenging it's secularism and with Islamophobia at all all time high, these references would only add fuel to the right wing propoganda. Rather, a footnote could have had been added hinting at the motives of invaders or it could have had been phrased better. I hope this would be kept in mind in the author's future endeavours. Rating:4/5
In "The Somnath Cipher," Priyanka Narain constructs a narrative that intricately weaves the threads of historical authenticity, mythological reverence, and modern-day intellectual intrigue into a tapestry that is as compelling as it is complex. In a true overture of ambition the author tries to prod into the complex annals of history of India, the narrative setting that up like a thriller that is scared to tip into the realms of reality & fiction.
Its protagonist is a journalist Pia Jani who possesses fascinating, unbendable curiosity & her childhood friend Aditya who gets into the pole of the sinister current of an ancient enigma & drives the action forward. While it is a travel or a discovery of a region it is also a penetration deep into the Indian cultural and spirituality that can make a reader ponder over the paradox of myth and history.
It is perhaps one of the most praiseworthy things about her storytelling manner: she seems to tread a fine line between history and the modern day. Tales of contemporary adventures looking for the lost treasure of Somnath Temple & the experiences recount of Mahmud of Ghazni & his men raiding Somnath Temple are easily interchangeable here. This concept of doubling up the action makes it easier to compare between the past and the present and the effects that happened in the past and just how they are felt in the current society.
This work features character portrayal of great depth and each of the characters is inherently a philosophical vehicle for the more general themes that include the conflict between love and duty loyalty and devotion to the eternal fight between religion and rationality. Her prose is very poetic – and that contributes greatly to the overall otherworldly feel of the book.
In conclusion, she has written a book based not only on the mystery’s nature but also on people’s psychology & emotions, deepening the usual thriller framework. It is not a book that gets over in a few hours of reading; it is a riddle to be solved, an odyssey to be embarked, & an enjoyment to be relished. It gives an ever lasting impression as a compelling mystery and a historical interplay of culture & human nature.

A bit about the book
Recently, I had read the “Da Vinci Code” by Dan Brown, and I was enticed and hooked by the symbolism and the references to mythology and history. This book seemed like the Indian counterpart, and I was extremely excited to get to learn more about our deep history. Overall, this book is the opposite of dry, and has a fast-paced, thriller-like narrative as the protagonists race to uncover the unexpected truth that shapes the story. To give a short introduction to the subject matter, It is an intriguing and interesting mystery novella that blends archaeology, ancient codes/ciphers, and the history surrounding the Somnath Temple and the invasion by the barbarian, Mahmud of Ghazni. To hook you in further, throughout the story, our two friends are always one step behind a merciless adversary who threatens the secret and falls into bad hands. The pursuit of the characters is relentless, and creates an exciting high stakes environment that renders this novel as a cat and mouse game, an adult version of Tom and Jerry. They have to follow an intricate, disappearing trail of breadcrumbs (or should i say roticrumbs), deciphering ancient symbols and cracking baffling riddles along the way, creating an unputdownable sense of discovery and brain bending challenge for each reader, no matter the level of education.. It's easy to step into Pia and Aditya’s shoes, being shocked by each new piece of the puzzle, spanning from Gujarat to Afghanistan.
The Somnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered one of the twelve Jyotirlingas which are the holiest of Shiva Shrines. The temple is believed to be built in ancient times and has references found in Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana and Rigveda. The temple has a tumultuous history of being destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. It was first destroyed by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1024 AD.
I wanted to particularly state the facts out as we delve in the mystery of "The Somnath Cipher". From ages, invaders from outside have looted the treasures, destroyed our temples and took what was ours to their lands. The temple has been destroyed and reconstructed over centuries, and such is its aura that its divine energy has lasted throughout. Recently, I have realized the more I delve into our history, more distressed I become about how India has been, and continues to be, exploited. This book blends facts with fiction, leaving it to the reader to discern and understand.
The story begins as there is a finding at Somnath and a hidden secret is about to get revealed. The most interesting thing is that the book is written on a timeline and all the events take place between 30th Dec 2020 to 4th Jan'21. Hence, the book is fast paced and is a combination of mystery, suspense and thriller in a mythological setting.
As more people get involved, a series of murders and involvement of journalist Pia Jani take place, making the story engaging. Pia and Aditya together are on a quest to save the secret from being revealed. There are so many questions as the reader walks through the book keeping them hooked.
"Do you think it was this temple that Mahmud of Ghazni looted still has hidden treasures? What do you think is there under Site-4? What is the secret which is hidden by generations and why?"
So, many questions arose as I kept reading: Is it treasure? Is it related to Lord Shiva? I can already envision this book being adapted into a thrilling movie. This book has my heart and has released at such an apt time. Hope, you enjoy it as I did.
Somanth Cipher is a thrilling and thought-provoking exploration of history, faith, and the enduring power of truth. The author skillfully blends historical accuracy with fictional narrative, raising important questions about the past and its impact on the present.
The intricate details of the ancient Somnath Temple, its history, and the historical events surrounding the plunder are vividly brought to life with the factual references to archaeological findings in Somnath, Taj Mahal, Agra, and even Afghanistan.
The story follows journalist Pia Jani and her childhood friend, Aditya Narayan, as they become entangled in a dangerous pursuit of truth after a cryptic message from a university professor, Nila Shukla, draws them into a world of politics, intrigue, mystery, and suppressed historical facts, uncovering the truth behind the infamous plunder of the Somnath Temple by Mahmud of Ghazni.
While the protagonists, Pia and Aditya, are well-developed characters with distinct personalities and motivations, it was the character of the Nawab that intrigued me most.
Through Nawab's character, we learn about the hidden truths around the partition treaty between India and Pakistan, the ascension of Junagadh to Pakistan and eventually handing it back to India, the Babi dynasty, and Bhutto's legacy rising in Pakistan.
I am thoroughly impressed and even thankful to the author that she has brought forth these well-researched facts for her readers, as they are crucial aspects of our heritage.
The novel is fast-paced, with twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the very end. The suspense is palpable as Pia and Aditya race against time to decipher the clues, all while being pursued by a cunning and ruthless adversary.
This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys historical thrillers, mysteries, and stories that delve into the hidden secrets of the past. With its engaging characters, thrilling plot, and thought-provoking themes, "Somanth Cypher" is a captivating and unforgettable
