Skims over careers and attempts to link them to life lessons

I got bored after a few chapters but tried to finish. I eventually gave up. No substance to the driver's careers and weak attempts to make self help life lessons from the examples. Many factual errors like Bruce McLaren winning 43 Can Am races in one year and Senna and Schumacher being teammates.

But what was I expecting for 99 cents?

Learned a lot

I am a new fan of Formula 1 and I truly enjoyed learning about the greats. I liked learning about their upbringing and the challenges they had to endure to become legends in the sport. Each of them have certain qualities that made them achieve great things and I think the book was spot on. I enjoyed the book.

Nothing More Than a Collection of Meaningless Undergraduate Essays

At a meager 136 pages, you would think that Driven by Destiny would be short, sweet, and to the point; however, each chapter reads like an undergraduate essay that has nothing meaningful to say yet continues to drone on anyways because the author must reach the assignment's required word count. The book is repetitive, uninspiring, and uninteresting.

For each of the nine chapters, Agosti unsuccessfully attempts to link a personality trait, such as humility, loyalty, and discipline, to a specific driver, such as Alonso, Sainz, and Verstappen. The problem is that the illustrations provided barely scratch the surface. For example, Sainz is supposed to illustrate loyalty because he remained close with his dad despite the fact that, during Sainz's childhood, his dad was often absent while he traveled for his rally racing career. If you're looking for a more in-depth analysis of their relationship, you won't find it. The same applies for all of the other drivers. You will learn more about these drivers simply by reading their Wikipedia page than you will by reading this book.

Rather than provide valuable insight into the unique lives of these drivers, Agosti spends the majority of his time defining each character trait at nauseum, even though nobody needs an explanation for humility, loyalty, discipline, etc. Similarly, nobody needs to be told why these traits are meaningful within the context of racing. It's self-evident.

If you're looking for a fascinating, emotional, unique, and/or entertaining dive into F1 (or racing in general), this book is not it. If, however, you're looking for a children's book that defines a handful of positive character attributes and provides the most bare-bones, high-level overview of some racers and team principals, then by all means give this book a shot.

For exponentially better reads, consider the following: The Mechanic by Marc Prestley, Go Like Hell by A.J. Baime, Senna vs. Prost by Malcolm Foley, Racing to the Finish by Dale Earnhardt Jr., or even the fictional book, the Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein.
