I read this book about 30 years ago when I was researching the Death Penalty for two of my novels. It had a profound effect on me. I have always been against the Death Penalty and this strongly reinforced my own heartfelt feelings about it. I went to New York (from South Africa)and managed to get a day-long tour of Sing Sing Correctional Facility where I met an inmate who had gone on a hunger strike against the Death Penalty along with a "writer". I told the inmate my feelings about the Death Penalty and said I'd read this book and would love to meet the author. It turned out the "writer" was none other than Doug Magee himself. Furthermore the inmate had a newspaper artcile about it AND Doug's telephone Number. Talk about synchronicity! I was able to meet Doug Magee at a bar in Manhattan for an all-too-short while.I see he is now writing novels - if he can move me with them the way he moved me with this book, he'll be greatly successful as a novelist. Good luck, Doug!
