AA Step 5, often referred to as the "confession" step, is about honestly admitting your shortcomings and the harm you've caused to yourself and others as a result of your addiction.
Summary of the Threefold The step instructs you to "Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs." This your Higher Power (as you define it) and taking responsibility for your actions.Honestly confronting yourself about your mistakes and their impact.Sharing a detailed account of your wrongdoings with a trusted confidant, typically your sponsor in the AA program.Focus on "Exact Nature":The step emphasizes revealing the "exact nature" of your wrongs. This goes beyond simply admitting you were an alcoholic. It involves detailing specific instances where your drinking caused harm, the impact on yourself and others, and the underlying motivations behind your actions.Moving Beyond While acknowledging how your actions may have affected others is part of the step, it's not about placing blame. The focus should be on taking responsibility for your own choices and the role you played.Emotional Release and Openly admitting your wrongs can be a challenging but liberating experience. It can lead to feelings of relief, a lessening of shame and guilt, and a stronger foundation for healing and personal growth.
