Embattled tells the story of Miracle Madame, a woman who begins showing up during acts of violence against the oppressed all over the globe. She walks in to the middle of a conflict without being harmed and miraculously stops the violence by persuading armies, oppressors, and murderers of all types to give up their weapons and negotiate peace. No one know who she, where she came from or how she does it. Not even Miracle Madame.
Known as Em by the two who love her, the Power who controls her and the man who becomes obsessed with her, she only knows that this is what she does. She doesn't remember a normal life or how she came in to this 'job', only that she must do it. She is a normal woman who longs for friends and someone to lean on but the Power who communicates to her through a ring does not answer her questions. Questions about herself and who she is or why she was chosen to be a savior. She worries her mission to end war will actually be detrimental to the world in the future and she worries that every decision she makes will backfire and cause even more strife.
Yves is the Power who is tasked with Earth and is the one who chose Em to be the one who carries out his objectives for Earth. As time goes on, Em begins making her own decisions and doing very well. Yves, who is from a society that shows no emotion, begins to fall in love with her. When he starts seeing Ron, a man who has become obsessed with Em through the news, he becomes jealous.
Eventually Em begins dreaming of another life, a life where she is normal. Bits and pieces of that existence start bleeding through to her life as Miracle Madame and she realizes she is living a double life but has no idea who her other self is. Wanting to discover herself starts to become a frightening thing when she meets and falls in love with Ron. They have so little time together and always a few days in many months because of the work she must do.
This story is interesting and has some wonderful moments but I did find a lot of the beginning to be confusing. I enjoyed the premise of the plot and it was exciting to see what Miracle Madame would do next but I could not connect with Yves, her 'Power' and his journey into human emotion. I didn't empathize with him or his reality. As for Ron and his romance with Em, moments were sweet and I felt his anguish at Em's work but he felt off-balance and a bit incapable. Em was a great character and in my opinion the story would have benefited from delving more deeply into her duality. I could see a series of books with Em and her struggle to do the right thing.

Here is the book summary:With blood on her hands, strange words coming out of her mouth, and her face all over the media, Em knows that she did stop the jungle battle, storm into the armed courtroom, face and defeat the zealot soldiers. But, “working” for the powers controlling her, she is haunted with not knowing about or being connected to her own life. And, at some point she will have to decide which of her two lives are her true destiny.

Yves, her controller has his own set of problems as a rookie learning to be a Power, trying to communicate with Em, facing her doubts and questions as well as his own, and struggling to control the onslaught of emotions that arise from his association with humans. He risks losing his chance for advancement, his chance to free his people, even his life, by falling in love with Em.

Overall an enjoyable read with moments of intensity and tenderness. An interesting look at human nature faced with God-Like abilities. Fantasy and Sci Fi readers as well as romance lovers should enjoy this as well.

Em sits at her desk, her hands soaked in blood. No wounds, no pain, and no idea where the blood came from. The reds and greens swirling across her computer screen scream jungle battle. She’s certain she was there. Fighting through the jungle to stop a battle, storming into a courtroom to save the accused, facing a firing squad of armed ruffians… Are her “three wishes” coming true? And, Yves? He is there to arm her with special powers, to send her into battle, to watch over her. His first assignment as a supreme power is to clean up the mess on Earth without going down there himself. Meeting his superior’s expectations is a huge challenge. Falling in love with Em threatens to ruin everything.
Wow What a different concept! I looked at the cover and expected a space travel or otherworlds novel, but it is not what I expected at all. Having said that I did enjoy it and when you read the book the cover does make sense later in the book.Initially I found it difficult to follow where the book swapped from the Guardian's point of view and then to Em's point of view. I think it is well written and you do feel Em's confusion at what is happening to her, how she is getting from place to place and who is the owner of the persuasive calm voice that speaks to her inside her own head? The book does deal with some serious situations and political issues. Em ends up dropped into some crazy and dangerous situations which she manages to diffuse and turn around for the better. I really liked the character of Em and would like to learn even more of the "normal" part of her life too. I thought the relationship between the characters of Em and Ron is great too. Ron is a complex character that has been through a lot in his life and perhaps thought his time of happiness had gone until he met Em. I won't give away how it ends as I hate it when people give away spoilers! But... I thought the ending was quite sad. I think how it ended their could be a book 2 possibly.

Actually a 2.5
The writing wasn't horrible, but it was. I didn't like that there were no transitions from all the different POVs. There was no rhyme or reason to the plot. I kept reading it hoping it would eventually make more sense. It didn't... romance? Not my idea of romance. But I was ok with each little vignette.

I don’t usually read science fiction or fantasy. In fact, it’s the last thing I’d choose to read. However, I read Darlene’s biography and wondered how she was able to solve her heartbreak over wanting to help the people she met while living in Mali many years ago.

Through the other worldly powers of Em, or Miracle Madam as the world comes to know her, the reader travels to the worst corners of hell that exist right here on Earth. From Africa to Europe and back again to the gangland streets of Los Angeles, we are transported along with Em. In the beginning, Em suffers the shock of her new abilities that have come to her as an adult as the result of a typical wish of any caring ten-year-old child. She wished back then for the magic to save the world.

Em struggles with her decisions and even wonders if war isn’t something that must exist in this world in order to achieve peace. The answers aren’t easy and neither is the work. I believe Em is the incarnation of the author’s wish to save her beloved Mali.

I read once that classic novels do one of two things. Either the hero is extraordinary and is put into ordinary circumstances and forced to cope with the everyday world. Or the hero is ordinary and is placed into extraordinary situations and forced to cope. Em falls into the latter group. She’s a normal high school principal who is suddenly thrust onto the world stage making destiny-changing decisions as she becomes the most revered and beloved woman in the world. She’s a modern day Joan of Arc who must sacrifice her ordinary life to achieve the goal of straightening out Earth for the better. Ms. Jones achieved a level of believability for me that I didn’t think would be possible in a science fiction novel.

The “Powers” who guard and pull the puppeteer’s strings on Em are a fantastical lot, from Yves to the Mentor to Elspeth, Yves’ sister. The switch in point of view, from the Powers to earth, is very confusing in the beginning. Also, the switch in setting with Em’s character from principal to the Miracle Madame is equally confusing at first. However, with the inclusion of Ron, her eventual lover, I found myself grounded and better able to make the transitions. Ron is an average-looking actor who’s thrust into the limelight by a movie Em helps produce. His rather mundane and ordinary life is touching and pitiful, even after he meets Em because he knows he can’t keep her with him or do anything to stop the course of events. When I found myself thinking about the characters after I stopped reading, I knew the author managed to hook me with the plot.

As the Powers observe the happenings on Earth, the reader learns more about Em, and as unbelievable as the Powers seem, they make the Earth characters more realistic.

Many characters are introduced during the novel, but most are only mentioned once. I found it confusing and wondered at the necessity of including them. Some of them, such as Tony, could have been expanded for more depth of Ron. In addition, Francois seems to be an important character in the beginning of the book, but he is only mentioned in passing in the rest of the novel. Perhaps he comes back in the next book in the series. I hope so because I felt he was one character I’d like know better.

Ms. Jones makes several important commentaries on our modern world. Em argues with Ron over the issue of salaries of movie stars and the discrepancy in what a teacher makes each year. Through Em, we also are given a view into our acts of giving to those less fortunate than ourselves by simply writing a check. Em takes Ron down into the streets of L.A. to see what it’s really like for the folks he thinks he’s helping by giving them money without knowledge of what’s it’s really like to be poor and to live without hope.

Embattled is a book that made me think. I recommend trying it, even if you aren’t a fan of science fiction. I did, and I liked it. In addition, I’d like to continue reading this series and applaud the author for bringing attention to the plight of those less fortunate through an entertaining art form.

The plot this story was very interesting, and I stay interested throughout the entire book. The characters held their own personalities, own quirks, that really made them stand out for me; allowed me to care for them.

I was confused at first, as this book switches POV between the "Madam of Miracles" and a "Drone", an otherworldly entity. The hard part here, wasn't the switch perse, it was the fact that one part was in third person, while the other was in first. And there wasn't much transition between the two - it simply jumped. Also, with this, some times the Drone's section was only a few lines then would skip back to the Madam. While it did add an interesting pace and unique viewpoint to the story, the harsh back and forth sometimes was hard to keep up with.

I did enjoy the story, the idea of an empowered miracle worker saving the world from itself. I think the author handles the growth of the Madam from first learning of her special abilities and her "mission" to the end when she accepted it whole heartedly and could use her abilities without a second thought - and ultimately could live with herself and what she was doing.

I do wish some more information was given about the "Guardian's" and who they were exactly, only to cure my own curiosity. However, the mystery of them fit well with the story, allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions about who the Guardian's really are.

Overall, a good read. As I said, the only real issue was the hard shift in point of view, but by the end of the story, I was almost used to it and barely noticed anymore. It did give the story an interesting perception and tempo for sure.

I started and finished Embattled in a day. The book is a page-turner, full of passion. There's never any doubt about the will of the book to carry you on. Yes, places confused me, the nature of the transitions and transformations could bear clarification, but the story is clear. Not simple, however. We've all wished to own powers like Em's in the causes of justice and equality, but even in the beginning there arise hints that the cost will be reckoned and come high. Em struggles between her joy in transforming the world, and ethical issues, even while her own humanity frays. Her success endangers her identity.
Touches of the reality we all share, the reality that so often disappoints and dismays us, abound. I love the underlying thesis, that satisfying though instant authoritative intervention may be, human solutions demand involvement and time, and break the heart.
This novel is shaped by an author who lived in Mali, immersed in a part of the complex third-world, not a writer who simply snapped a few frames with her Canon at a tourist stop. The text could be tightened, some scenes slow the action and could be cropped, but if we're honest, when did you last read a book that had no such moments? This is Darlene Jones' first novel-- what will she do next?
High entertainment value yet provocative, original, and straight from Mencius' 'unbearing mind'. I'll be waiting for a good time frame in which to read the next book in this series by Darlene Jones, because if it's anything like this one, I'll be running my finger across the Kindle pad at a fast clip, lost in the world she created, with no desire to be interrupted until I once again reach 'The End'.

Science fiction is not a genre I would choose to read often, I'm wary of outlandish aliens and intergalactic battles - not that there is anything wrong with them, they're just not for me.
Imagine my delight at this multi-layered story, very intelligently told. Em is a Miracle Worker,, a super hero, controlled and directed by the other-worldly Guardian who watches over her. At first she is confused and bewildered by the realisation that she is leading a double life, as a teacher and then, in an instant, transported into some of the Earth's most troubled regions to face bullets and broker peace. Though she is (increasingly) aware of her other self it is always difficult to pinpoint what that other self is.
I loved this story. There was so much more to it than I expected. The love Em has for Ron and he for her, strong enough to withstand the pressures of Em's special status, and the 'human' frailties of the Guardians who can look down on Earth with such omnipotence but who are also subject to fears and jealousies.
Through changing points of view the author manages to convey the brutality of lawless regimes, the willingness of some to make the world a better place, and the simplicity of love.

Science Fiction, a little romance, a love triangle between human, miracle worker and an inexperienced puppet master all trying to make the harsh reality of Earth a better place to live.
This was a very interesting book, but I felt like I had ADD, keeping up with all of the story lines that were running simultaneously. You have Earth 1- where Em has her real life, Earth 2-Madame Miracle’s reality, then somewhere out there- where the Guardians reside and the Powers tinker with humanity. Traveling between the three zones, Em finds herself falling in love while her ‘handler’ from the Powers is falling in love with her.
Em’s job from the Powers gives her to opportunities to better the world. Through her adventures she helps the down trodden, stops wars and other atrocities. The love interest, Ron struggles with his love for Em and her ‘job’.
Embattled is definitely a quick read, with lots of world building in the midst. The message that there is hope is fully explored throughout. It did remind me of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ and all the scenes with the angels looking on to Earth and Jimmy Stewart.

Harsh reality, a little magic and a lot of imagination - Miracle Madam (Em) is born. She has two levels of existence, two very different worlds. In one she's a teacher, in the other she's guided by a Drone named Yves. He's been appointed by the Guardians to be a Power, merely to prove they aren't biased even though they firmly believe that Drones are stupid by nature. In Em's second existence in a flash she's neutralising junta leaders, then facilitating relief workers in areas devastated by a flood. It isn't possible, yet it happens. Ron loves her from the moment he first sets eyes on her, he helps her to achieve one of her tasks, but their love grates with Yves...

A perfect blend that keeps you turning each page to find out what will happen. The reality is harsh, it leaves you wishing for your own magic wand ...

Em's wishes have come true. She wants to make a difference in this life and make Earth a better place to live. Supreme beings have given her amazing powers and although she doesn’t, at first, know where these powers came from or why she was chosen, she thrives in her new role. As a miracle worker, she is universally adored, but two men come to love her for herself. The developing love triangle brings chaos. Embattled will have you turning pages as your emotions become entangled with those of the characters. While the plot is intriguing, it is sympathy for the characters that draws us in. Darlene Jones uses words the way an artist uses a brush. She is skilled in the mechanics of writing, but there is nothing mechanical about the storytelling. A great read!

I haven't read a book in a long time, but once I picked this one up I couldn't put it down. From a man's point of view, I found the heroine refreshing. The story line had some surprising twists and enlightening views of world conditions. This is more than a love story and not at all what you might expect of a sci-fi.

Embattled is an extremely imaginative and enjoyable read. Darlene writes well and the fanciful, imaginative love story is engaging and unique. Em the main character strives to make the world a better place, and falls in love during her adventure. An extremely enjoyable adult fairy tale!

This is a very imaginative story that goes back and forth in different worlds and timezones, which can get a bit confusing with the shifting point of view but if you stick with it, you end up enjoying the story. If you love magic and sci-fi, you will enjoy this book.
