The Life of Anna

The Life of Anna, Tenth Anniversary Edition: Act One

Rate this book

Raised in shadows, molded by cruelty, Anna was never meant to have a choice.

After losing her parents at age twelve, Anna is raised by an abusive guardian who molds her into the perfect tool for Devin Andersen's machinations, her unique gifts making her invaluable in his quest for power.

At sixteen, Anna's world begins to shift when Devin claims her, coinciding with dreams of a mysterious man who inexplicably brings her comfort. But it's not until she turns twenty that Anna's life truly transforms. As she steps into a world of manipulation and dark desires, she finds herself torn between two masters: Devin, whom she's known since childhood, demanding her obedience, and Alex, a handsome stranger who offers the promise of freedom and safety.

As Devin achieves a crucial step towards his ultimate goal of power, his cruelty drives Anna to her first act of rebellion. Caught between love and forces of evil, Anna must navigate a life she never wanted, while Alex works tirelessly to give her something Devin can never take away.

A NOTE ABOUT THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

For the past ten years, The Life of Anna has set the standard for Dark Fiction in many reader’s minds.
There are times when you will question your sanity, question reality, and question the value of continuing reading. You will love it, or you will hate it. There is no in between.
Originally published in five parts, this new Ten-Year Anniversary Edition has been revised, re-edited and restored to its original format of one (very long) story, although split into two Acts for publishing purposes. New scenes have been added as well.
Be warned, this is a hard book to read. While Anna’s story is not categorized as a romance, it does contain romantic elements. It is Anna’s story, told in all its bloody, violent, beautiful, twisted truth.

I am a first time reader of this book, and was lucky to be able to receive a ARC 🙂

-3rd Person POV
-Abused FMC
-EXTREMELY Dark
-MF , MFM
-Slow Burn

I love dark romance, the crazier the better in my opinion but my heart goes out for Anna in this book. Her life is like a tragic rollercoaster that is stuck on a loop.

Devin is her evil manipulator of a master and use her poor sweet innocence against her. This book will keep you wanting to turn the page to find out what’s next for Anna.

You will want to cry for Anna, and reach through the book and never let her go. She deserves her HEA and I truly hope she gets it in the end ❤️

No words.

I don't even have words. I first read the OG Life of anna back in 2020. I revisited it when I started bookstagram over 2.5 years ago, so when I saw Marissa was releasing a revised version, of course I was going to read it.

This is by far one of the darkest books I've ever read, and if you know me, you know I seek that stuff out like a reaper looking for a soul.

Anna, poor poor Anna, an orphaned twelve year old, claimed by a slave master at the tender age of 3 days old is sent to her guardian after the death of her parents.

For the next 4 years she lives a life of what she perceives of love, but what others would perceive as abuse. But nothing could prepare her for the horrors she would face when she turned 16.

In the first part of this Anniverary edition, we explore the dimensions of her relationship with Devin her master, and Alex the guy from her visions. As they fight against each other, one trying to pull her into the life she would never recover from, and one trying to pull her away into the life she could never dare to dream of, Anna must face waves of grief that a human could never recover from.

As a half-immortal, can she? If you have triggers, this book will trigger you. Please look as after your mental health.

Marissa - bravo. I've raved about this book for years, and I didn't think you could make it better, but you blew it out of the water.

Part 2, here I come.

This book deserves its own category in the dark romance genre. Anna is a unique female lead who has sadly been abused her whole life. There was so much hype around this book I had to give it a chance. I have very few triggers but had to stop at some points due to the intensity of the scenes.

Devin is the ultimate villain and Alex is the perfect hero. I definitely went through all the emotions and that cliffhanger …… like why just why.

For better or worse this story is addictive and will be one of those books that will haunt me.

Heat level: 3/5. This series had been on my TBR for a while so when I saw the ARC form I signed up so fast. I didn't think this would be as thick as it is but whoa. I've read a lot of Dark Romance before this, but this is on a whole other level. Between the amount of time Anna has suffered to what was done to her on and off page. Seeing her go through what she does once the time jumps in the beginning in such a short amount of time is heart wrenching. I've never wanted to torture a character slowly before. Devin is a whole other level of sadistic and evil. If you have any triggers, this is not the book for you. The list of what isn't in this story is way shorter than what is. I swear if he doesn't end up dead and Anna doesn't find her damn powers to stop this madness I'm going to be very upset.

Beyond 5 Stars!

I’ve enjoyed The Life of Anna since the beginning. This Anniversary Edition does not disappoint! Not sure how Marissa could make this story better, but she did! This story is my benchmark for dark reads & Act 1 was incredible. On to Act 2!

Omg, what can I say! I loved that the storyline didn’t change a crazy amount, especially as this was such an amazing story to begin with. However, the changes made, were to areas of the original story many probably wanted to know more about.

**I had to edit the original review, as I was so tired when typing it, it didn’t make sense!

Whenever someone asks for recommendations for dark romance, this is always my first suggestion! It’s my favorite series, my favorite dark romance…this is the 3rd time reading for me! Yes, I know that makes me really dark and twisted. 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

This is definitely not a book to read if you have any kind of triggers, if you're not a fan of dark fiction, if you have problems reading about violence and abuse. Take note of all the warnings, they are there for a reason!

This is probably the darkest series I ever read, and if I wasn't sure that there would eventually be a HEA, I might not have finished it. Why did I give it 5 stars then? The story line sucked me in, the writing was incredible and she had a way of making you feel like you were there. Which wasn't always a good thing, because as mentioned, DARK! Poor Anna was subjected to abuse that no person should ever have to go through. The only thing she ever wanted was to be loved, but because of the way she was raised, she often wasted her love on the wrong people. The fact that she was able to endure everything she went through though makes her a very strong person.

One of the descriptions I read of this book really stuck with me, was so true. This book is dark. Then it gets darker. And when you think it can't get any darker, it does. Every time I thought that things couldn't get any worse, that she had endured the worst that was out there, somehow things got worse! I have to say, Marissa's mind is not one I would want to get inside of, I don't know how she came up with some of the things she did.

The first time I read this series, I read the whole thing straight thru, it wasn’t divided into 2 books. Having read it already, I know what’s coming still. We have not seen the darkest it gets yet, and it still makes me feel nervous knowing there’s so much more coming! I still can’t wait though. This remains my absolute favorite for DARK romance!

I was offered the chance to ARC read the tenth anniversary edition of Anna’s story, and having rated the original a 5 star read, I jumped at the opportunity. This version is the same overall story, but more polished and refined than the original tale. It’s hard to say I enjoyed Anna’s story, because that simply isn’t true. I’m not sure it’s possible to enjoy something so harrowing, but it is compelling and I didn’t want to put it down as I rooted for her to find her happy ending.

I need to start with a fair warning. Anna’s tale is the darkest of the dark. There simply aren’t enough trigger warnings to adequately convey just how harrowing her story is. Think of every awful thing and it’s probably worse. This isn’t a Romance or a Romantasy - but it does have romance and magic and immortals. I’d say it’s more of a horror with fantasy and romance. Please do not go into this one blind, it’s heavy and pitch black.

Now, as a survivor, I will say I generally find it oddly healing to read dark stories. I can’t really explain fully as to why only that they offer a safe space to explore and engage with feelings that have been long buried. When it feels too much, I can close the book and explore again when I feel stronger. So I’ll long advocate for keeping space for pitch black books despite there being a lot of push back from those that simply don’t ‘get’ them.

Anna is a beautifully strong survivor. No matter the horrors inflicted upon her, her soul remains wonderfully pure and wholly her. She’s naive and far too trusting sometimes, but her heart is captivating and that is what will keep you reading her story. You’ll need to see her conquer and come out on top. You’ll hold space for her, and hold her in your heart whilst she struggles. Ultimately she’ll seduce you, as with everyone else who meets her, and keep you entranced as you journey through her life.

If you’re able to read the issues within these pages without being triggered, and you ‘enjoy’ pitch black stories, Anna’s tale is absolutely worthy of your reading time. Marissa skilfully weaves a harrowing tale interspersed with chinks of light that will keep you reading from cover to cover and haunt you long after the pages close.

Massive thanks to Marissa for entrusting me with an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Deliciously Dark and Depraved
Ohhh my gosh I am addicted to this book, I couldn’t put it down - I stayed up wayyyy past a reasonable hour, took my kindle to work to read at lunch, and basically ignored everything and everyone to carry on reading this book 🖤 I haven’t read the original editions so I don’t know how this compares but I honestly wish I had read them sooner!
If this is your first time then honestly this is full of trigger warnings - a lot are non con sexual based but there’s also manipulation gas lighting emotional/mental/physical aspects as well so pleaseeee check. But if you’re someone like me who sees those kinds of things as shopping list this is right up your alley!
Anna has been brought up a s.e.g.s s/l/a/v/e for Devins wider purpose yet the way he manipulates her just makes it 1000% worse 🤢 and honestly after you think he can’t get any worse then Marissa just throws something else in there that not breaks Anna’s heart but yours 😭 I say this is MF to MFM because Anna has another master in Alex who is trying to show her a different way to life but there’s a wider storyline that keeps drawing them apart 😮 Honeycutt is a wonderful writer in that although you see the evil going on you she makes you see how Anna can’t move away from it! As the story developed you begin to question whether she can really move past all that’s happened and happening to her! I found the supernatural elements unexpected when first can across them in a book because it is so contemporary based but it does bring a whole different dimension - and honestly as a contemporary lover it adds to to the story without making it to out there magical/paranormal! I cannot wait to see where this is going to go in Volume Two!
This is like psychological horror erotica, I thinks that’s the best way to describe it 🖤 sounds wrong but so worth a shot for dark readers!

I am completely blown away with this book. Is it possible to have a book hangover when you haven’t even finished the series yet? Why yes, yes you can. THE LIFE OF ANNA has been on my TBR for the longest time, and while I’m kicking myself for not reading the book sooner, this tenth anniversary edition is worth the wait.

I had no idea what to expect going in, as I always go in blind. What I found was a heartbreakingly, beautiful story about a girl who has gone through every bad thing imaginably possible. The story is dark, gritty, bloody and violent. It gave me The Handmaid’s Tale vibes, and as twisted and f*cked up as the story was, I was here for it! While the book is not classified as a romance, romantic elements were woven into the story so seamlessly! The biggest surprise was that there was magical realism!

This book is not for the faint of heart. It is a dark book, although myself, did not find it to be too dark. I’m not sure what that says about me. 😅

THE LIFE OF ANNA releases on September 6! Make sure you check it out. I guarantee you will be hooked from the very beginning! I can’t wait to read Act 2 to see how Anna’s story ends. 5⭐️

Thanks so much, Marissa, for providing me with a complementary copy of the book. All opinions are my own. 💕

Wow! I’ve not read the original Life of Anna so I was excited to read this 10th anniversary edition. Act 1 gives an introduction to the history of Anna, with seminal events at 12 & 16-20 years old. There are also a lot of characters to track. Told in the third person, Anna is the centre of the story, with abuse, slavery, dancing, and love all major components. There is something about Anna—I’m not sure if it’s yet to be revealed, part of who she is, brainwashing —but for all the atrocities she has endured, she remains innocent in many things. I enjoyed the story-telling, and the feelings—I could feel Anna’s horror at the terrible things she saw & experienced. I liked the secret society and the special elements attached to it, which were a surprise to me & I don’t want to spoil this for others. Looking forward to Act 2!

This is the story of Anna.

This is the story of Anna. It never gets better. There is no hope. There is no savior. There is only Anna and the unending darkness.
I couldn’t stop reading no matter what I read. Call me train wreck from now on because I couldn’t stop even if I wanted to. I have never read a book I both immensely loved and hate in tandem. I cannot say I am ready for act 2 but I’m a glutton for punishment, so wish me luck.

Amazing

An amazing story, and we're only halfway through it.
I first met Anna and Alex when the first book came out 10 years ago, and it's a story I will always remember and go back to. I know what happens next, and there's so much more to come
This is a dark and scary read and isn't for the faint-hearted.
Please read the warning at the start of the book.
This book will make you feel all the emotions and sick at times, too, but it's so worth it.
Deep down, this is a love story. It's a love story of two people who go through hell to be together.
Well done, Marissa, on an amazing first part of Anna and Alex's story. You have outdone yourself.

This is the 10th anniversary edition. Act 1. Now let me tell you I have read this series In the past and loved it. You will fall in love with this book all over again. The darkness of this story will grip you the love Anna feels for Alex. Devin is the ultimate villain. You watch Anna’s life unfold and all the things she is put through for the sake of power. You definitely feel for her and root for her to have a happy ending. The supernatural elements are amazing as well. This story is written beautifully and this is one story that I could totally root for to be turned into a movie, it really is that good. I absolutely loved Act 1 of the life of Anna.

**HEAVY TRIGGERS/TOPICS** This book was a beast & crazy dark. I’ve read one book that I thought was the darkest out there & this definitely comes in second. Anna’s life is a constant tragic battle of survival after her parents are gone. She is so innocent & brainwashed into doing things she doesn’t wanna do/wouldn’t do with a normal conscience. Her Master Devin is the epitome of evil & I hope he gets what’s coming to him. By the end there are still lots of open ends that need answers to that I know we all hope goes in favor of Anna getting a happy ending.

Where do I start? I read the initial Life of Anna and that series had me in a chokehold for months. MONTHS. Check your triggers because for some this book is heavy. Anna grabs your heart from the start. I’ve never read a book where I’m rooting for the FMC as much as I do her. I cried for her in the initial series… I cried for her in this one as well. I cannot stress enough .. check your triggers but I definitely 100% recommend this book to EVERYONE I come into contact with. I’m here for emotional support!

Well hello, hello, we meet again!
I received an ARC copy and revisiting this story years later was an experience I didn’t expect to be so intense all over again. The writing remains just as powerful, drawing me back into Anna's world with all the emotions, suspense, and dark twists that I remembered.

Seeing Wilhelm and Alex again gave me butterflies—they’re just as captivating as ever. And Devin… wow. I had completely forgotten the extent of his manipulation, so much so that I found myself almost falling for his lies just like Anna did. Our poor girl went through hell and back, at first I was surprised of how gullible she is, falling for every guy that treats her with a little love but then remembered, she's holding on to every small act of kindness because she lacked that for so long, was abused for so long that she is basically a shell of a girl, mindless and ready to do anything her master tells her having no real life experiences of her own, it felt empowering to see her breaking out of her mold and start being a person of her own.

The writing is as powerful and evocative as ever, pulling you into Anna's world with every page. The emotional rollercoaster, the suspense, the complexity of the characters—everything just hits differently in this edition, maybe its the changes that were made and maybe also it's that I've grown as a person years later and I'm seeing this in a completely different perspective.
This is one of those books that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page, having this 10 year edition being proof enough of how much impact it made all those years ago and still now.

Thank you Marissa! <3

Instead of getting the book in parts, I decided to get several in one, so I got Act 1 then Act 2. It's probably easier to read it in parts though as it's a very lengthy book! So if a lengthy book overwhelms you, get the books in parts to break it down better and make it less overwhelming. Also note that in Act 1 and Act 2, they don't tell you when it transitions to the next book of the series, it just goes from one chapter to another.
The author does a great job at noting triggers before the book starts, so pay attention if you need to know those triggers before reading. This series is pretty much pitch black romance.
I'd give this a 3.8 out of 5, The author does a great job with giving characters depth and draws you to wanting to know what happens to the female main character, Anna. Anna goes through so much abuse, heartache of loss one after another with losing family, friends, and so much more. The male main character, Alex, wants to help her (not trying to give spoilers) and falls in love with her. They both go through a lot of obstacles, and it leaves you wondering how it's going to end.
What I don't really care for is the affairs, and at times when they are hot and cold towards each other between characters, not just with Anna and Alex. At times, Anna was a bit annoying and she should have raged at least in the middle of the book series rather than later on in the series, more towards the end. It's mentioned often how powerful she is yet no one helps to equip her of that power to go against Devin.
If i had to compare this to a tv series, I'd say it's similar to handmaid's tale.

I started this at 19% because I finished with #1 book in the series, Enslaved, before starting this.

DNF 38%.

The female lead is frustratingly naïve in this book. While I do like a naive FMC and a manipulative MMC, it was a bit too much for me. There were times where the FMC would be told things that revealed the Devin isn't a good man, yet would be brainwashed into pleasing and sleeping with him again. This would happen multiple times. Not a deal breaker, just frustrating.

This book is definitely erotic horror - a lot of non con. While seeing a female lead embrace her sexual side was refreshing, some of the sex scenes was well written but others felt dry and repetitive.

The deal breaker was how slow it felt. I could forgive the pacing in the first book since the male lead didn't not until much later on in the book. However, once he becomes the female lead's master, he frustratingly still does nothing and keeps his distance. He even gets his friend to date and sleep with her, before he does!

The amount of these 'good' characters that Anna sleeps with being married men also gave me the ick. The pregnancy arc also was quite weird

it was horrible. it felt like the author had ideas of what she should add to the story, as she was writing, and didnt do a re-read...

we learned 93% in that Alex is bi and that he did it with his best friend and his whole team.. which is fine, but like thats a pretty big thing based on the character...

also, whoever comes across poor Anna, uses her...even her father in law..but everyone claims they love her? its so confusing..

also, the amount of swaps there are in this story is just gross.

i was having whiplash from the emotional back and forth she kept on having with pretty much everyone.

Devin seems to also have an infinite amount of ways to manipulate her. his latest find? making her a drug addict???

it was horrible but i couldnt put it down..and im still going to finish the serie.

dont judge me🙃

Warning, this is a very very DARK book with very heavy subject matter. That being said, I enjoyed this half of Anna’s story, in terms of the writing and the storyline. This story is tragic and very horrifying. Anna is a character I fully wanted to grab and hold tight. I wanted nothing but the best outcome for her and just really needed her to persevere. The fact that she remains this perfect little human through all this story has given and taken from her makes me have faith in Act Two.
Marissa Honeycutt is a very talented writer and I want more Anna. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

DNF at 48%.

The content while disturbing wasn't what made me put this down. I was even enjoying the plot when it was brought up, the novel just wasn't moving forward in my opinion. Half way through, and we should have been a lot further along than we were in my opinion. I was pretty invested in these characters but not enough to finish out this novel and the whole other second act. I will still be looking into other works by this author though

It is entrancing and some of the deepest dark stuff I have ever read. So dark it makes me tenative to rate it. I skimmed a lot in the last half of part one bc it was “too much”. So I will base it on good writing that kept the story going. Sometimes there was a bit too much repetition in the sense of Anna’s “slave work” but then we would be surprised with a twist. So I think a 4 is fair.
