Elizabeth Moon is desperate to find Lev Walker, the angel she fell in love with. She knows he is a Sojourner, or an angel who escorts souls to the next world, so she believes if she looks hard enough, she will find him, no matter that a bullet meant for her took him away. She’s determined to find him, unaware that even angels wage their own wars mortals aren’t supposed to know about.
This was originally intended to be the 2nd book in the series, so I skipped momentarily Covenant (now 2nd in the series, before Second Sight) and read this book first. Because I had already started to read the first chapter at the end of Sojourner (book 1) and I just couldn't keep myself from reading further, so I bought all the books and resumed reading from the point I left, the 2nd chapter of Second Sight. And I am glad I did that, because if I knew who the bad guys were already and who really was Scott, I wouldn't have had much fun reading this book. What's the fun in already knowing who the bad guys are? So, against the author's suggestion to read Covenant first, I read Second Sight instead and it was a good thing. This book made me cry, especially the beginning and the end. It was sad and made me a little mad at how Kane kept trying to get Lizzie to like him more than friend. And angered me how she treated Lev. I know she was influenced badly by Kane and she couldn't think with her own mind and heart, but still... it was distressing. It was painful to watch how things unfolded. And a relief at how things ended. I had a really bad feeling about Therese too. And she was probably the most creepy of the evil gang. I didn't like how Jimmie turned to be under Therese's influence. I didn't like much Griffin in this book. He treated Lizzie like a crazy child. I didn't like Scott at first, probably because I was so tuned with Lizzie's feelings that I felt betrayed when he acted the way he did at his house. Knowing well that Lizzie was right about him. But I also kind of liked him somehow, even not knowing who he really was. I probably sensed it anyway. All in all a good read, and very touching.
Second Sight by Maria Rachel Hooley, the third installment in the Sojourner series, is splendid. Hooley continues to catch me by surprise because she doesn’t always deliver what you’re expecting. I find that refreshing.
Elizabeth Moon is struggling with life, day and night. In the day, she is constantly reminded of her loss by Lev’s absence. At night, she is surrounded by dreams of Lev that taunt her, and once she wakes up he is always gone. She can’t escape and she doesn’t understand why he abandoned her. I mean Angels don’t die so where the heck is he?
Second Sight brings back a lot of the old characters from Sojourner and Covenant and also introduces some new characters. Surprisingly, I was glad to see Griffin back. I approve of Lizzie and Griffin’s new friendship, and I think he really underwent some character changes since Sojourner. He redeemed himself, and I like how Hooley wrote him in as a “big brother” instead of a love interest.
The suspense was the best part of this novel. It took me a little while and some questioning before I decided: “Who is good?”, “Who is bad?”, and “Where the heck is Lev?”
I gave Second Sight by Maria Rachel Hooley 4 STARS and I strongly recommend this novel, as well as this series.
I was kindly given a copy of this book for review from the author, so first of all wanna thank her for that.
Well this is the 3rd book in the "Sojourners" series, and it was very good. In this book we are back with Elizabeth as the main character, which i liked, not that i dislike a male main character i just seem to get into books more with a female lead because i can relate more. The storyline was good, the characters were good (and some bad, pretending to be good HAHA). This is definitely a good series for anyone who is a fan of the paranormal books about angels. And it brings the good and the bad side of angels to the story. Where the first book was more a romance, and the second more of a dramatic book, this one was more a right vs. wrong or good vs. evil book. Plus a little romance and drama threw in there. It was a very easy read, and very enjoyable.
Note: Sorry the review is so short, i tried to write one without spoilers and it seems that it's hard for me to do that LOL. But hopefully you get the idea and be sure and check out the series because i am sure you will enjoy it. Now onto the last book! Happy Reading!
This is the 3rd book in the Sojourner series, and I enjoyed it as much or more than I did the last two. In this book Lev (the angel sojourner who carries the souls of the dying) and Elizabeth find each other again. Elizabeth is determined to find Lev somewhere eventhough all her family & friends think he died because he was shot in book 1. Elizabeth's family & friends will not understand that he was an angel & could not die. Elizabeth puts herself in danger to find another sojourner to try to gain info about Lev. She finds another angel who denies being an angel & this only adds to Elizabeth's hurt and madness as her friends & family see it. Elizabeth is also in a new town & school and meets Cain, and other new "friends" who aren't so much friends as she thinks. The other sojourner she met tries to warn her of her new friends, & she begins to hate him. She is influenced by the black angels and is tricked by them & only Lev can save her if she will let him. I hate to give away endings, but this one had a great, unexpected ending!
I loved this book. It was interesting to see how Elizabeth would react to Lev coming back. I had a feeling that a new character that was introduced was him the entire time. The action that happens in this book was great and kept me up late at night when I should have been sleeping for work the next day.
