I recently read The Forestborns by Vardhini Amin, a middle-grade fantasy set in the lush Sahyadri ranges of Southern India, and it left me utterly spellbound. The story introduces a world where every living being is imbued with a soul called a vruha. By night, the vruhas of plants and trees awaken, revealing a secret world of life, magic, and danger that coexists with humanity.

At its heart is Siah, the spirited vruha of a red sandalwood tree, destined to lead her species. Her home forest is her sanctuary, but it stands on the brink of devastation from poachers—humans who see the forest as mere resources. Already scarred by a catastrophic fire three years earlier, the forest's survival hangs in the balance. Determined to protect her home, Siah embarks on a journey inspired by the legends of a rebel vruha from centuries past. However, she soon realizes she cannot succeed alone. Enter Avni, the brave daughter of a forest ranger, whose mortal perspective and fierce loyalty add depth and strength to their quest.

This story is far more than a fantasy; it’s a heartfelt exploration of morality, sacrifice, and the delicate balance between humanity and nature. The book beautifully interweaves themes of hope, resilience, and the unyielding bonds of family and friendship. Siah and Avni’s intertwined pasts are revealed with a poignancy that left me teary-eyed by the end.

The vivid, lyrical descriptions of the Sahyadri ranges make the setting feel alive, and the mythology surrounding the vruhas enriches the narrative with layers of wonder and mystery. Vardhini Amin masterfully creates a world that feels timeless yet deeply relevant, reminding readers of the urgency of preserving nature and the power of collective effort.

The Forestborns is not just a story; it’s an experience—magical, meaningful, and memorable. A perfect read for anyone who loves tales of courage, nature, and the magic that connects us all.

I've always thought of children's stories as simple, well defined lessons in morality where much of the world's harsh realities are kept veiled. Most fables I've read as a child have proved this. Reading The Forestborns, however, opened my eyes to a different way of telling stories to children. With its intricately defined characters and its fabulous world building, Vardhini Amin's book took me into a magical world which was not all candies and roses, but dared to speak about the realities of the world in a manner that does not act diminishing for its target readership. In fact, it does this rather well - dealing with mature concepts from a child's perspective - and allows us to treat children as people with as much sentience as adults. As a story, I liked how the narrative flowed from Avni to Siah and how it all came together, and the surprise twist at the end which was beautifully crafted. I am intrigued by this mystical world Vardhini Amin has created and I am looking forward to learning more about it.

what if trees could talk? Or better yet, what if they had souls, roamed freely and spoke fables under the moonlight? that's what the book presents. Siah, a young tree soul, lives in the hidden world of Vriksha—a magical forest realm unknown to humans. her world is threatened when sandalwood smugglers invade the forest, putting her entire kind at risk. determined to save her home, Siah starts on a dangerous journey where she encounters Avni, a human girl who finds comfort in the sandalgrove under threat.

the forest comes alive in this story. Amin’s descriptions make you feel the heart of the trees. the writing is simple yet vivid, bringing the forest and its magic to life. the growing bond between Siah and Avni, is heartwarming and awe-inspiring. the book is packed with messages, but it never feels preachy. from environmental conservation to the idea that humans and nature are interconnected, it binds all the themes effortlessly into the narrative. this could be easily a Ghibli movie!

Just last week, I spent such a mesmerising day in Bangalore, and Cubbon Park had a lot to do with it. The prettiest part of it was the nature trail - walking amidst trees, a beautiful untouched path.

The calm I felt during this time was just🤌🏻 And it got me wondering about how beautiful life would be if we had more of nature around.

‘The Forestborns’ is a bittersweet reminder of this thought. Vardhini Amin has sprinkled life into the trees and spun such a beautiful story around them.♥️

The heart of the narrative, a poignant plea for forest conservation, was a captivating journey in itself. Yet, it was the tapestry of side characters, that appealed to me more. The tale of the malevolent tree proved that even within the most pristine ecosystems, darkness can lurk. It challenged the simplistic notion of good and evil - shades of gray often outnumber the stark blacks and whites, be it in humans, animals or trees.

While “The Forestborns” is primarily intended for a younger audience, I found it to be a surprisingly refreshing read. The vivid descriptions of the forest, its creatures, and the magic that drenched its every corner transported me to a world of wonder. I couldn’t help but long for more of these scenic escapes, where the air was crisp and the ancient trees whispered secrets.

Vardhini Amin’s The Forestborns transports readers into the enchanting world of Vriksha, a place where nature’s secrets are brought to life in the most captivating way. With a blend of fantasy and environmental themes, Amin crafts a story that is both a cautionary tale and a testament to the indomitable connection between humans and the natural world.

At the heart of the novel is Siah, a fiery and courageous tree soul who embarks on a perilous journey to protect her home from destruction at the hands of sandalwood smugglers. Amin’s portrayal of Siah is rich with emotion, making her a deeply relatable character despite her otherworldly nature. Siah’s passion for her world and her drive to preserve it evokes a sense of urgency that resonates with readers, reflecting the current environmental challenges faced by our own world.

Siah’s journey is not one of isolation; she encounters Avni, a human girl whose frequent visits to the forest highlight her own struggles and need for solace. Their connection is beautifully woven, demonstrating Amin’s talent for creating complex and meaningful relationships. The evolution of their bond, from two separate quests to a united mission, underscores the novel’s central message – the inherent link between humans and nature.

Amin’s descriptive prose breathes life into the setting, transforming the forest into a character of its own. The imagery of plant souls roaming free under the moonlight and the looming threat of destruction give the novel a dreamlike quality, while simultaneously grounding it in the harsh realities of exploitation and loss. Through this vivid storytelling, readers are reminded of the delicate balance that exists in nature and the dire consequences when it is disturbed.

The themes of resilience, shared history, and interconnectedness in The Forestborns are not only timely but are presented with a tenderness that leaves a lasting impact. Amin’s writing is immersive, her characters are compelling, and the narrative offers a heart-wrenching but ultimately hopeful look at how life persists even in the face of danger.

The Forestborns is a magical yet poignant tale that will captivate readers who enjoy fantasy, environmental themes, and stories that remind us of our own responsibility to protect the world around us. Amin’s work is both a love letter to nature and a call to action, making it a must-read for anyone who believes in the magic of the natural world and the power of human connection.

Happy reading ❤️✨

I’m someone who actually talks to my plants. I’ll look at them and say, “How are you doing today?” And sometimes, when a leaf sways or a little bud shows up, I like to believe they’re responding. (Okay fine, maybe it’s just the wind but in my heart, I know it’s communication 🥹). That’s why when I picked up The Forestborns by Vardhini Amin, I instantly felt like this book was written for people like me — people who believe that nature holds magic, and we have the patience to pause and listen to it.

I had a gut feeling that this book will be an amazing read simply by looking at its stunning cover. Glad to say I was not wrong. This book beautifully blends the genre of fantasy with reality. It’s not just about a story that is unfolding in a forest but it’s also about resilience, grief, courage, and the quiet hope that life always finds a way. (Honestly, I found myself emotional in so many parts because it felt like the trees and characters were mirroring humans, our struggles, our healing.)

The writing is gentle, poetic, immersive and so easy to understand. It’s the kind that makes you forget where you are. It makes you empathize with nature, not just sympathize, and that is a powerful thing.

In short it is a heartfelt, beautiful and an important book that will truly make you see trees differently forever.

In our selfish pursuit of progress, we humans often harm nature without considering the consequences. Yet, amidst this destruction, there are those who stand as guardians of the earth, ready to sacrifice everything to protect their beloved environment. The Forestborn by Vardhini Amin is a tribute to such warriors—a beautifully crafted fantasy tale set in a lush forest where the very souls of trees come alive.

The story revolves around two compelling protagonists. The first is Avni, a courageous human child on a mission to save the forest from ruthless poachers. The second is Siah, the soul of a Sandalwood tree chosen by her clan as their next leader. Both characters are faced with overwhelming challenges, yet they choose to stand their ground, even when the risks are immense.

From the opening chapter, the book captivates readers with its vivid descriptions of the forest, making you feel as though you’re walking alongside the characters through dense greenery, encountering magical creatures and unraveling hidden secrets. Vardhini Amin’s storytelling is immersive, skillfully balancing action, emotion, and moments of quiet reflection.

The strength of The Forestborn lies in its themes. It’s not merely a tale of adventure but also a profound exploration of courage, self-discovery, and the need to protect nature. The narrative encourages readers to reflect on their relationship with the environment while being swept away by an engaging plot.

The pacing is impeccable, with each chapter building anticipation and leaving readers eager for more. The inclusion of enchanting illustrations enhances the experience, particularly for younger audiences, adding a visual dimension to the magical world Amin has created.

What truly sets The Forestborn apart is its universal appeal. While it is perfectly suited for children and young adults, adults too will find themselves drawn to its rich narrative and the deeper messages about harmony with nature and bravery in the face of adversity.

Overall, The Forestborn is a must-read for fantasy enthusiasts and anyone seeking a story that is as magical as it is meaningful. Highly recommended for fans of middle-grade fiction with heart, imagination, and a powerful environmental message!

The Forestborns is a beautifully narrated tale that brings to life the magical world of Vriksha, where plant souls roam under the moonlight, embodying human-like resilience, vulnerability, and courage. As soon as I started reading the book, I was immediately surprised when I stumbled upon the Assamese word Deha, meaning "physical body." Later, I came to know that the word is actually derived from Sanskrit :D , but yeah the incorporation of such words and phrases adds a cultural depth that feels welcoming. Thouhtful details like these ground the story, inviting readers to consider the deep-rooted connections between humans and nature since time immemorial in an authentic way.

The narrative follows Siah, a spirited young tree soul, on a mission to protect her forest from the dangers posed by sandalwood smugglers. Along the way, she meets Avni, a girl who finds solace in nature, setting the stage for a beautiful journey. Their connection transcends worlds, emphasizing that magic can bridge the realms of humans and nature in ways both miraculous and heart-wrenching. The shared space, where plants come alive with emotion, is a potent reminder of the living world around us, its struggles, and its resilience, drawing poignant parallels to real-world issues like poaching, deforestation, and climate threats.

Beyond the external conflicts, Siah and Avni's story explores the inner battles faced by each character, including the struggle for self-acceptance and the courage to bare one’s soul. These internal challenges make their journeys feel intimate and personal. The sense of nostalgia woven into the story is powerful, reminiscent of cherished childhood tales—of beloved folklore and fairy tales—while imparting lessons important for today's world.

The illustrations in the book bring the magical realm of Vriksha to life in a way that feels both enchanting and immersive. This is a book I would recommend to readers regardless of their age, for it’s a tale as relevant as it is timeless, proving that magic lives within us all.

The Forestborns is a story with purpose, where each character has their own unique journey, yet they all come together in the end to remind us that nothing is impossible if we stand united for the greater good.

Vardhini Amin strikes a perfect fantasy and realism with her book, 'The Forestborns'. I dived into the book without much context, but as the story proceeds, readers witness the amalgamation and a dependent bond between humans and nature.

At its core, 'The Forestborns' is about the world of Vriksha, where lies the captivating stories and secrets. Siah is a fierce tree soul, someone in whom the clan see their future leader. Siah's world is just like a dense rainforest, with trees all around and greenery throughout the length and breadth of it.
It's a place where Sun shines the brightest and trees come to life at night.

Avni is a young girl having a childhood fascination and earnestness in the forest. She wants to save sandalwood trees and is often adventurous in nature.
The manushya and Siah paths cross, and together, they bravely dive into a journey with the same moto- Save Sandalwood Trees from destruction. The queue of events that occur is gripping, and it puts you to the edge of curiosity and thrill.

Amin's prowess fascinated me. She nurtured her own imagination to create a world within trees and made tree souls come to life. That being said, Amin not just focused on the detailing of a great fantasy world by also held realism and human emotions like empathy, helplessness, to mention a few, on the same padastle giving the book the perfect balance.
'The Forestborns' is the author's better than any debut work. A book that transports adults to the time when grandparents would read them fables and teaches children the intertwined world of humans and nature.

Thank you, Vardhini, for bringing me out of a helpless reading slump. Highly recommend this book.

There's a magical realm where all the tree souls come out of their physical bodies after sunset and can move around and have a life just like other creatures. Siah is a young, brave and smart soul part of the Sandalwood grove in a forest below Sahyadri mountain range. Avni is a young girl who often visits the Sandalwood grove. Siah and Avni follow their own quests to save the grove from Sandalwood smugglers.
I think we all have heard about tree's getting slaughtered for humans' own greed or cutting them down to make concrete jungles but what is important is to remember that trees are living organisms just like humans and pets, even though they cant move or speak and author has given this simple message through a very magical tale to the young readers.
Speaking of the magical world, the world building is so beautiful and enchanting, I loved how older trees took care of younger plants and taught them important skills and passed on wisdom. They felt like a real family just like all other animals, including humans.
I also loved that the author has used sanskrit words like chandra, deha, vruha.
Avni and Siah's connection, they were both courageous, smart and sweet girls, I was very worried for them. Waara, the owl was an amazing sidekick and did her job fantastically. Their quest kept me on my toes and I couldn't help bringing it.
If you like magical middle grade books then you must read this book.

Feeling a connection to nature, forest walks, mystical beings, magical realism connecting fantasy to real world adventures, climate issues, ground work, community - this book has it all! I loved the intricate interplay of the characters' background stories and how the narrative unfolds it layer by layer leading the reader into the heart of the characters' lives.

Considering the context of this world built in this universe, I felt that the author missed out on a great opportunity of talking about the different species of plants and animals present in the western ghats. The right context already exists, some more details and insights about the different creatures and how they influence each other’s lives would fit right in and add more nuance and understanding to the MC's life.

I read somewhere recently that reading books meant for middle schoolers as adults brings back the sense of wonder and enchantment we felt as kids. So I picked up this book and I’m happy to say - it works. Overall, it makes for a great read (especially for children).

Do you think the fantasy genre shouldn't be about only dragons, elves or mythical characters from foreign lands?

And when it's about children or middle graders, it's mostly all candy and roses.

Our Indian culture and literature have delivered unforgettable fables and fantasy stories without such characters.

Forestborn refreshes that outlook. Rather, it introduces a real-life problem in a magical realm. Wins a brownie point for that!

In a nutshell, the story revolves around Siah, a young tree soul and Avni, a young girl. They team up and try to save the Sandalwood grove from the smugglers's grip.

Another thing I must appreciate is that there are some unique characteristics of trees found in the Western Ghats. It's beautiful!

I believe a young reader will enjoy the storytelling, and as the book has some amazing illustrations, they will have a good reading experience.

The Forestborns is about this ethereal world wherein vruha or the souls of trees roam around freely. Among them is Siah, along with Avni, a young girl, and together they stand up against the smugglers who threaten their habitat.

Synopsis
Avni, a young girl who lives with her grandmother, frequently goes to the nearby sandalwood grove, especially when she feels lonely. It makes her feel more connected to her parents, whom she lost tragically a few years ago. She may not know this, but the trees she so dearly loves have a soul, called vruha, who come out from their bodies, or deha, at night and have aeons worth of stories to tell. Among them is Siah, a sandalwood soul, who notices a young girl, one of the good ones, always spending time with and visiting them. But when smugglers threaten their habitat, will Siah and Avni be able to save the sandalwood?

Review
The Forestborns is a tale of resilience and hope tinged with immense grief but closure and happy endings, in a way. It makes for a perfect middle-grade novel, sprinkled with heart and fantastical elements.

I started reading this story while resuming power walking in a local park after a few months, which has many different types of trees peppered throughout a radius of 1 km (I think). And I wondered every day if I should go back there, in the middle of the night, in case I could see some vruha out and about. Yes, that is how believable and visual Vardhini Amin’s writing is. It did make me ‘see nature in a new light’, even at my age, where daily life makes you forget the real good things about living!

Coming to the story, what a beautiful beginning it had, where the author introduced the world of Vruha and its various inhabitants. A wonderful tale of magical realism with well-meaning characters. I am in awe of the fact that Amin used Hindi/Sanskrit terms, which elevated the writing like nothing else, especially ingenious of her to name her characters the way she did.

The Forestborns starts on a dark thunderous night where Yajurv, with his sick 3-year-old daughter, is searching for a legendary old woman who lives alone amidst a forest. It was a blockbuster prologue, which gave a hint as to what was going to come next in the story.
Lit by the faint glow of the only working headlight was the hut, still standing, bearing the scars of a thousand storms.

The story then starts after a few years with a twelve-year-old Avni who’s playing with her friends, reminiscing about her past in the forest. We’re soon introduced to the other side, the magical beings that reside within all plant life. Even among them, there are conflicts and sinister beings. As are there old, wise souls who conduct storytelling sessions to warn the young ones among them about how it is always wise to be good in your deeds.

Narrated in the third person, most of the story is from the perspective of Siah and her life as a vruha. From a new clan leader who needed to be chosen to the threat of sandalwood smugglers, it’s her story.
If I don’t believe I am capable, no one will.

Helping on her journey of being a responsible vruha is Waara, an eagle-owl. Further, like humans, vruha come in all shapes, sizes, and colours, speaking different dialects. We reach almost half of the book when Siah and Avni’s stories intersect. And I have to mention here again about Amin’s wordplay. The book has some interesting turn of phrases.

I felt that the ending was a bit rushed though. I think it should have been more cathartic, yep, big word considering it is a middle-grade book, regarding the incident involving a forest fire, which is at the heart of the story. But kudos to the author’s storytelling and world-building. It consists of quite the lessons for children, from taking charge of your own destiny to being responsible for your actions. And some lessons for us all as well.
The vriksha here [closer to human settlements] appeared duller, their leaves tired, their colour paler. The manushya seemed to have a damaging effect on their surroundings.

Towards the end, the author ties up the story nicely. The epilogue is one of the most magical that I ever read. And I don't want to spoil it but there's a connection between Avni and Siah that will feel best if you read and find out.

While I wholeheartedly recommend this to parents to get it for their 11–15-year-olds, I’ll recommend it more for adults as it might just make you believe in the magic that surrounds you once again. Reading this book was an immersive experience, a magical realism within a magical realism.

Thank you to the author for a review copy of the book.

P.S. I’d recommend reading the Prologue again after finishing the story, it will blow your mind!

Now for shoutouts to a few of my favourite people who worked on this book:

Pia Alizé Hazarika, who designed the cover and illustrations throughout the book. It is because of her attention to detail that even though the illustrations are in black-and-white, they convey the particular incidents as narrated in the story beautifully.

Shreya Punj, my overall favourite person and the one whom I thank (even though she might not know this) for nudging me in the right direction in my career…

This book takes you to a land where even plants can speak!

🌱INSIGHT: A hidden realm of magic, nestled in the heart of today's cut-throat human life & their technological advancements — where every tree comes alive, sings, dances, & partakes in the struggle for survival. When poachers threaten the lives of these innocent greens, Siah, a young tree soul, embarks on a daring quest that could change the fate of the entire clan, including her own.

🌱REVIEW: The author has done a tremendous job in writing this story, not just because of its underlying message, but also for its flawless execution. While the book advocates for conservation of forests & nature in general, the way Amin seamlessly blends this message with a poignant exploration of loss, life & death, while also giving it the foil of a children's fantasy, is surely no mean feat. The world-building & character development were so strong, that I never felt like I was reading about characters who weren't "humans!" It all felt so incredibly real, so much like a story of our own lives. And therein lies the author's credit, for once the reader begins to empathise, & not sympathise with other living beings, is where he/she becomes aware of the change he/she can bring as far as conservation is concerned. An outstanding & important piece of work, especially today when we face an environmental crisis. I wish this book reaches as many people as possible, because these words have the power to induce a real change.

🌱STRENGTH: 1. World-building, narration, characterization were spot-on. The author manages to humanise the characters to such an extent that you won't be able to differentiate between your world & theirs for a split second. Very immersive.
2. The crucial message conveyed.
3. The exploration of grief, loss, death & life. I shed a few more tears than I expected to while going into this book. Nothing gets lost in life, it always comes back, in some form or another.

🌱TARGET READERS : Though ideally suitable for children & teens, aged 9-15, I think even adults could be moved after reading this.

🌱GENRE: Fantasy

First of all, this book touched my heart. If you can make a person connect emotionally to Mother Nature, this is your book.

The Forestborns by Vardhini Amin is a captivating fantasy novel that intertwines themes of resilience, environmental consciousness, and the intrinsic bond between humans and nature. Set in the mystical realm of Vriksha, the narrative introduces readers to vruhas—ethereal tree souls that roam freely under the moonlight and remain calm and still in the daylight. The central theme of the story revolve around Siah, a spirited sandalwood vruha, and Avni, a young girl who finds solace in the forest following personal tragedy. Their paths converge as they confront the menace of sandalwood smugglers threatening their sanctuary.

The author’s storytelling is both enchanting and thought-provoking, transporting me into a green universe, offering a fresh perspective on environmental issues. This book has the ability to inspire readers to view nature through a renewed lens, fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world. The author's background as a lifestyle and portrait photographer shines throughout the book which enriches her descriptive prowess, allowing readers to vividly envision the lush landscapes and vibrant characters she portrays.

Though the concept of breathing soul into the trees is a beautiful concept, in some part the story could have explored more on the magical connection as it has a lot of scope to tighten the storyline. It did give me Avatar feels except I felt Avni’s connection with the vruhas could have been elaborated and painted vividly. The illustrations, though present, could have been more abundant to further immerse readers into this magical world.

Overall, The Forestborns is a heartfelt journey that not only entertains but also instills a sense of environmental stewardship. It is a commendable book by the author to bridge the gap between fantasy and reality, urging readers to recognize the silent wonders of the natural world and the importance of preserving them.

If trees could tell stories, what would they say? 🌳 Would they whisper warnings, share secrets, or sing lullabies of old? 🌙🍃 In The Forestborns, Vardhini Amin imagines a world where trees aren’t just silent witnesses to time they are sentient, soulful beings with their own legends and fears.

We follow Siah, a young tree spirit from Vriksha, a magical forest hidden from the human eye 🪴✨. But Vriksha isn’t immune to the greed of mankind when sandalwood smugglers threaten her grove, Siah must step beyond the safety of her roots. Along the way, she meets Avni, a human girl whose own life is quietly tangled with the fate of the forest 🌿🫂.

What I loved most about this book is that it doesn’t treat nature as a backdrop it treats it as a living, breathing character 🍂. Amin writes with a simplicity that feels gentle but never shallow, turning the forest into something you don’t just imagine you feel it.
The bond between Siah and Avni is delicately built, capturing the quiet awe of a friendship between two very different worlds 🌍💚. This isn’t just a children’s story wrapped in shiny leaves and talking trees. It dares to talk about real things: the consequences of greed, the fragile line between human progress and environmental loss, and the deep-rooted connections we share with the earth 🌏. Yet it does so without ever talking down to its readers the book trusts children with big ideas, and I respect that 🫶.There’s a sense of wonder in The Forestborns, but also a steady pulse of realism. It’s not a story about perfect endings, but about hope that grows quietly like a seed beneath the soil 🌱.
The twist towards the end left me thoughtful in the best way 🫢.
And honestly? If there’s more to this world, I’m ready to return💚✨️

Thank you so much Vardhini Amin for this book and for creating this beautiful story 💚✨️

I initially started noticing The Forestborns everywhere—on feeds, in conversations, quietly making its presence felt. But it was the cover that truly pulled me in. There was something gentle yet watchful about it, as if the forest itself was asking to be seen. When I discovered the premise—that trees have souls, that forests awaken at night—I knew this wasn’t going to be a loud fantasy, but a quiet, listening kind of story. The idea of vriksha and vruha immediately intrigued me, promising a narrative rooted in myth, nature, and emotional depth rather than spectacle.

The story follows two characters who stayed with me—Siah, a young sandalwood tree spirit, and Avni, a twelve-year-old girl. Both are connected by a painful past: a forest fire that took away Avni’s father and destroyed Siah’s home. Their bond grows slowly and feels very real. I loved watching Siah learn how to protect her grove and Avni change from a grieving child into someone who wants to stand up for the forest. When sandalwood smugglers threaten the grove, their fight becomes about survival, not just for themselves but for the forest as a whole. The writing is simple and easy to read, yet it makes the forest feel alive—like it is breathing, listening, and watching.

What stayed with me the most is the message of the book. It quietly reminds us that nature is not something we own, but something we share this world with. In the real world too, forests are disappearing every day because of human greed—cut for profit, space, and convenience, without thinking of the loss. The danger isn’t always cruelty, but carelessness. The Forestborns feels like a soft warning, asking us to slow down and notice what we are destroying. It made me listen more closely, and when the book ended, I felt like the trees had said something important—and I didn’t want to forget it.

Some stories are not just words on paper. They slowly take root in your heart, just like trees in a forest. The Forestborns by Vardhini Amin is one of those stories for me. This isn't an ordinary fantasy book filled with magic, it's a soulful journey into the magical world of Vriksha where trees are very much like humans.

The author has crafted this world in such a beautiful way that it's both wondrous and wise. Through her poetic writing style and richly imagined characters, she has invited us to listen to the whispers of the forest, the wisdom of the wild, and the stories that the trees have been carrying with them.

Siah, a fiery young tree soul, embarks on a perilous journey to save her kind. In the winding paths of the woods, she encounters Avni, a young girl who often visits the Sandalwood grove for solace. They share a deep past with each other which eventually forces their paths to cross and the forest witnesses a miracle in the face of danger.

Each character in this book is so lovingly and intentionally written and is trying to teach us something important. Vardhini has breathed life into trees who can walk, talk, and feel, which makes the story so unique and compelling.

As a reader, this is the first book I'll recommend to every parent who wants their children to read. They'll grow up loving not just stories but also nature and the world around them. Not just children, this is a book that everyone should read at least once in their lives, despite their age.

I recently read The Forestborns, which is a middle grade fantasy book by Vardhini Amin and it was simply a magical experience. In this book, the world that we live in, has souls in every living being. The soul of a being is called 'vruha' and the vruhas of plants and trees comes alive at night.

Siah is one such vruha of a red sandalwood tree deep in the forest in the Nilgiris in Southern India. These different plant species have their own territories and some vruhas are dangerous and sinister. Siah is about to be the next leader of the red sandalwood trees. But she overhears some poachers who are going to destroy her home and the vruhas. A forest fire three years back had already claimed the lives of many trees, so Siah decides that she must do something. She embarks on a daring journey, following the footsteps of a rebel vruha some eons ago. But soon she realizes that it's not easy to do it alone and she must take the help of a mortal girl named Avni who is a forest ranger's daughter.

This book is more than just a middle grade fantasy. It takes a deep dive into morality without overwhelming you. It's a story of hope and resilience. Avni and Siah has their past intertwined and I loved how the book ended. I had tears in my eyes. It's a book about familial bonds and sacrifice and so so much more. I also loved how the author incorporates this magical world's lores and myths and spins an adventurous tale.

The FORESTBORNS by @vardhiniamin will be one that will always remain close to my heart because this reminds me of my favourite childhood book series, which made me love novels and series.

This is a story about Avni, a school going rebel child, who lives in the forest. And Siah, the Deha (soul) of one of the sandalwood trees growing in Avni's neighborhood forest. Avni loves the forest, but for a very different reason. A reason that unfolds in mysterious ways. Whereas Siah is set on her journey to save the lives of the Sandalwood trees from the cruelty of humans. A journey that is full of obstacles which may lead to Siah losing her life as well. On the other hand Avni is on a mission to find the culprits behind thieving of branches and the incident of the forest fire, in which she lost her parents.

This book is a perfect read for your teenager. It has beautiful illustrations that keep you intrigued and entertained. A book that is full of morals, empathy and values one needs. An aspect I loved about this book is, how it nourished sisterhood in a very beautiful manner. The writing style is splendid it transports you to a very different world of the forest lives and I guess after this book, whenever I look at the forest, it won't be the same again. It embraces mistakes and tragedies in a very beautiful way.

A solid 5 star ⭐ read. Highly recommended for readers who are into children, teens and fantasy fiction

This book is a captivating fantasy novel that dives into the themes of nature in the form of fantasy and magic . The story follows a group of Deha who tries hard with their unique abilities which are tied to the sandalwood forest navigating challenges to test their friendship , companionship , their connection to the outside world and their love for the forest . The connection shared by Siah , Bhuja , Waara and all the other sandalwoods of the forest was quite special and overwhelming . Throughout the book the expression of grief was quiet saddening but made us realise how kids losing their parents live in constant grief of not being to connect with their parents . The illustrations were exceptionally pretty and helped me to indulge in the magical world Vardhini specially build for the younger generation .
Vardhini's writing style is quiet impressive creating a vivid and immersivr setting filled with rich details and sense of wonder. The characters are so well developed that by the expression of jealousy , longing , desire , struggles the depth added to the story is unmissable. The writing styles evokes the beauty and mystery of the forest with a blend of adventure and emotional turmoils .
This book highlights the importance of nature and highlights the role that manushya's should play to protect it

"You are the kind of spirit who would not hesitate to follow a ray of hope into complete darkness. Don't deem yourself a failure, for you are already worthy in my eyes. You deserve a fair chance to save your kind against a ruthless threat."

I generally don't say this to authors, but Vardhini is a pure soul, as the book is nothing but life. The way she's written it made me feel like I was amidst the Sandalwood Vruhas. This is definitely one of my best reads of '24. The reader feels like they're inside the Sandalwood groove, with the Vruhas. The world of Vrikshas is beyond everything.

Though Siah was the lead role, I liked Taru, as she isn't any ordinary. Her story moved me so much. I couldn't stop thinking about the two brave mothers, Veena & Kaveri. I pitied Samr, because he deserved more. I loved Waara for the wonderful friend that she was. Yajurv is the parent that I want to see in myself in the future.

As a single kid, I haven't experienced sibling love in my life. But the ending moved me so much, and it teared me up. I have always wished for an elder sister, and this was something else.

I have one message: Read this if you want to experience the magic of nature, relationships, bonding, and much more.

A heartfelt and captivating  story that throws light on the beauty of nature and highlights the undeniable bond between humans and nature. The story follows Siah, the brave soul of the sandalwood tree choosen to be the next leader. Everything was going good until sandalwood smugglers threaten to destroy the forest. While Siah was on the journey to protect the forest, she encounters Avni, a courageous young girl who often visited the forest when she felt lonely.. Their friendship grows as they face obstacles and make difficult choices, keeping the reader invested in their adventure. Will the young girl be able to help Siah in saving the forest from the smugglers??

The language used is rich and lucid, easy for the beginners and young readers to understand. The bond that forms between them feels natural and powerful, showing how two very different worlds—human and magical—can come together for a greater cause. The writing style is amazing with a fast-paced narration. This story not only entertains but also reminds us of the importance of forests, how we humans often tend to harm the nature and the magic they hold. Highly Recommended. It's a heartfelt tale of courage, hope, and harmony, perfect for anyone who loves nature, fantasy, and stories that leave a lasting impact.

Vardhini Amin’s The Forestborns is primarily about this sandalwood vruha (tree soul), Siah, who almost gives up her life to save her grove of trees (aka, family) from the vicious and ruthless tree-chopping poachers. On the other side, Avni, an eleven-year-old girl who lost both her parents in a forest fire is trying her very best to warn the Forest Department in her locality about the impending doom of poachers.

Through her vivid narrative style, Vardhini Amin has painted a world so vibrant and teeming with life that it will change the way you look at trees and plants forever. I absolutely loved how the story not only highlights the challenges one faces while taking on new responsibilities but also the pressing issues of rampant felling of trees for unending human greed.

From the very first scene till the last, it had me clutching my heart in hand because the author did not shy away from writing about heartbreaking issues every one of us deals with such as death.

I would highly recommend this read for all your young ones and you. Read it with them, and read the story to them. It will plant a seed of consciousness and empathy with every page turned.
