M. K. Weaving gets better with each book. Aubade centers on the heroine Sara navigating a series of challenges none of which she asked for, nevertheless she conquers her way to respect from the occupants aboard the spaceship. As I read I could imagine a movie being made based on this novel showing vivid scenes like Sara wrestling with the hell cube or the harrowing shuttle ride through a sandstorm. The novel ends with a satisfying conclusion.

Aubade heaps on the mystery and melodrama as Sara suffers silently through the existential crisis of waking up a century from her home planet and entirely against her will. She frets over her husband and the sudden absence of her child. With her family apparently lost to her past, she has little time to outwardly mourn as the duties of the new settlement demand her attention in a different sort of war for survival; that being all hands on deck to establish and stabilize the new colony.

As her vulnerabilities manifest into romantic entanglements and new threats arise to harry the settlement, Sara must learn to navigate the complexities of her life in this new, hostile world, all while also trying to unravel the mystery of who brought her aboard Aubade against her will in the first place.

I would recommend Aubade for those looking for a tense, slow burn, spacefaring adventure.

Excellent Science Fiction read. The author puts you in the shoes of the main character Sara through her descriptive writing. Sara goes to sleep in her bed at home and wakes up to a new world where everything is uncertain for her. How did she get here? Who can she trust? Where does her life go from here? Sara has to prove herself through dangerous and trying adventures. She is able to accomplish more than she ever thought possible. Sprinkle in a little romance along the way and you have yourself a nice story with a gratifying ending.

This story is a “slow burn” that for me was a bit too slow at first, but overall it’s a solid science fiction story about a woman who wakes up aboard a colony-bound spaceship and has to piece her life back together.

The plot is reminiscent of Equilibrium and Gattaca. There’s some fascinating characters and banter between them.

Recommended for those who love science fiction and related genres.
