Oh Brother #1

Don't Remind Me

Rate this book
I thought he was the One Who Got Away…until I met his brother.

After a string of false starts, Dani Mills has finally found her footing in a new city. She’s planning the most important event of her career, has made a few friends, and even has a hookup for the best tiramisu in the state. Now, if only her brain would stop dreaming of the ex she broke up with in college.

When the event’s catering plans suddenly change, Dani is forced to work with the last person she expected—Jase Beauford, her ex’s older brother. He’s distractingly tall, irritatingly confident, and has a jawline sharp enough to make anyone lose their senses.

As soon as Dani tastes his food, she knows she’s in trouble. Not only is Jase’s cooking so good she forgets her own name, but he listens too. He cares. And the moment he kisses her, it’s not just his food she can’t get enough of.

Dani’s plan had been to forget her past, but she may have to face it instead. Because the more time she spends with Jase, the more she starts to wonder if his brother was ever “the One” at all.

Don’t Remind Me is the first book in the Oh Brother series and can be read as a complete standalone. It features a sexy chef/cat dad on a journey of self-improvement, a recovering perfectionist whose heart he cooks his way into, enough spice to heat up any kitchen, and a deliciously simmering HEA.

Don’t Remind Me was a joy to read leaving me invested from the beginning. Jase was perfection and it was great to read a male character face his mental health concerns. Dani and Jase together were impeccable and their chemistry was perfect, I adored them together. This does have a few trigger warnings but they were beautifully written. I thoroughly enjoyed this one! I received a complementary copy from Booksirens.

Oh, how I loved this book!! The characters…*chef's kiss*. I fell in love with Jace and Dani. So beautifully written. Right from the start, the investment I felt in these two was so strong. I am SO glad to see this is the first of a series! One of my most favorite recent reads is "Next To You" by Hannah Bonham-Young… and I would rate this book JUST as high. Absolutely a fave and such an adorable story. My heart was so full as I read this....everything from Jace's family heartbreaks to the mending of his heart that Dani was able to do. I had a hard time putting this one down and at times, forced myself to because I didn't want it to end. (This is my FIRST ARC review, and I feel like any future ARCs will not be able to compare!! Can't wait for the next book!) Excellent job, Lacey Burke!!

Note to readers: Heavy subject matter/issue around pro-choice beliefs. Did not bother me, but it may bother some.

I really enjoyed Don’t Remind Me, with the exception of the hot-button abortion parts. The author provides a disclaimer at the beginning that the book contains “discussion of abortion policy and mention of online and written harassment.” In reality, the author villainizes pro-life supporters; they were either willing to “learn” or they were hateful terrorists, no in-between. Regardless of whether one is pro-life or pro-choice, the focus of Dani’s work simply added no value to the plot of this book. She just as easily could have been planning a symposium for saving rainforests, or funding libraries for under served populations, or providing bicycles to every person in Timbuktu - literally any charitable or social cause imaginable - and it still wouldn’t have changed the overall gist of the story. I want my romance books to be an escapism, not a political statement, and I prefer to be adequately warned in advance otherwise. Vague content warnings of “policy discussions” didn’t feel sufficient here.

That being said, I truly liked this story overall. The author handled mental health issues brilliantly, both with Dani’s anxiety and Jase’s black sheep struggles. The ex’s brother thing was less problematic than I thought it would be. I loved the restaurant setting. I’m actually looking forward to Aubrey and Gabe’s story!

This book follows Dani and Jase. Jase is a successful chef at a newer restaurant. His boss volunteers Jase to cater a huge fundraising event for the non-profit that Dani works for. Dani is the point person on the fundraiser which means she is the woman Jase will be working with. When Dani meets Jase, she realizes that he is the older brother of her ex-boyfriend. Although she dated the brother for a couple of years, she was never introduced to Jase.

Both Dani and Jase have a lot in common, they both feel like they can't live up to their families expectations. Dani felt she needed to succeed in the corporate world in order to gain the approval of her mother. Jase has constantly been compared to his younger brother and his parents have never made him feel like he belonged because he chose a different path.

I saw so much of myself in Dani, she was a chronic overthinker and I suffer from the same condition. I loved her journey, she found her place at her new job and with her coworkers. And she gained so much confidence throughout the story and it was so great to read.

There were so many parts in this book when I wanted to hug Jace, and so many when I wanted to throw something at him. I loved his journey too, I loved the therapy and mental health representation especially shown through Jace's story.

I loved the romance between these two. It had a bit of a rocky start, but it was so good. I was invested in these two from the very beginning. I loved how the relationship evolved, and how they both helped the other. Jace's support really helped Dani gain her confidence. And Dani's love really helped Jace overcome some of his issues of not being good enough.

On top of all of that, I also loved all of the food descriptions and decided I definitely need to read more chef romances 😂. There was also some really great discussions about women's healthcare, as that was the focus of Dani's job.

Thank you to Book Sirens and Lacey Burke for my arc of this book. Please give this book a read!

I loved this contemporary romance!

Dani is helping to plan a fundraising charity event to raise donations to build a women's care clinic for those with low-income that would have prenatal care and be a birthing center. The event would also bring in experts to speak on educating about reducing pregnancy-related mortality rates. So it is important she help make sure the event would raise enough money and make this event run smoothly.

While getting things ready for the food menu, she meets chef Jase; who happens to be the older brother to her ex Alec and first love that she hasn't quite gotten over. She has 3 months to work closely with him and it brings up many different feelings about the past. And she's trying to figure out if she likes Jase, or if she's comparing him to her ex.

Jase and Dani grow closer over the 3 months working together. But both are holding back, both harboring feelings of self-doubts and striving for success. To be good enough for their families and for each other. Would being together cause drama for Jase's family and brother?

I loved the plot of this book, along with the romance that blooms between Jase and Dani. It was a slow burn and it started to feel like it took a long time for them to try things out. But it didn't bother me as much as it normally would. The plot and writing style really grabbed me in and I didn't want to put this book down. I loved that Dani took a firm stance on educating about abortion being health care and the author making sure that message came across appropriately. So if you have strong feelings against that topic and you're not willing to be educated, then that part of the book might bother some people.

The spice was so good! The chemistry and love brewing was so sweet. I liked that Jase was protective and wasn't controlling. That both characters worked on themselves and encouraged each other's success. I highly recommend reading this story.

Thank you BookSirens and the author for an arc copy and the opportunity for review. All opinions are my own.

I liked this and I think a lot of contemporary romance fans will, too.

This book was a little difficult to rate because I really, really enjoyed it while I was reading it. Like, stay-up-way-past-my-bedtime enjoyed it. Like, I-was-only-going-to-read-one-chapter but then found-myself-reading-five-chapters level of enjoyment. When I wasn't reading it, though, I wasn't thinking about it much and didn't feel anxious to get back to the story. So, I think that makes it solidly a four-star read for me. It was a good time, but I wasn't super invested.

I found these characters to be very relatable and fairly fleshed-out. Jase was an especially interesting character - he goes to therapy, is a culinary artist, empowers those he loves, and yet really struggles with his self esteem after growing up constantly being compared to his younger brother. I also liked Dani and Jase's relationship and the ways in which they strengthened and cared for one another. Dani was going through some difficult stuff with work and I loved seeing the ways in which Jase showed up and became a safe person for her.

I will note that there are a few heavier issues explored in this book - particularly around being pro-choice. That didn't bother me, but it may bother some so I wanted to note it.

Overall, this is a perfect romance book to pick up and finish in a weekend. It has a few heavier moments, but overall feels like a sweet and slightly steamy comfort read. I'd recommend it!

"Don’t Remind Me" by Lacey Burke is a beautifully crafted story that draws readers into the intimate moments and evolving relationships of its characters. The narrative captures the essence of love, family, and the search for a true sense of home.

The narrative excels in its depiction of Dani and Jase’s life. The vivid descriptions of their work together and, later, their holiday preparations, create an inviting and endearing atmosphere. This attention to detail not only brings the story to life but also highlights the warmth and comfort found in their relationship.

Interactions with Alec and Stephanie provide a relatable glimpse into family dynamics and the adjustments that come with new responsibilities. The playful exchanges and genuine connections between the characters enrich the story, adding depth and authenticity to the family’s portrayal.

One of the story’s strongest aspects is the portrayal of Dani and Jase's relationship. Their ability to navigate familial tensions, celebrate joyous moments, and reaffirm their commitment to each other is depicted with sincerity and emotional depth. A particularly touching scene is their discussion about their future plans, showcasing their contentment with their present and their shared vision for what’s to come. This moment encapsulates the core themes of finding one’s true home and cherishing the present.

"Don’t Remind Me" is a captivating and delightful read that beautifully captures the magic of life and the joy of building a future with loved ones. It is a celebration of love and connection that resonates with readers, leaving them with a sense of warmth and satisfaction.

Dani finally is finding her place in the world after several works and cities. The only problem is that she still dreams about her college boyfriend, who was perfect and she dumped like 10 years ago. He is now married and happily expecting.

Now she has to coordinate a symposium to get funds to build a health care center, and her boss asks for her to change the menus they have talked with the hotel were it will be taking place because one of her friends wants to donate the chef and his team for catering the gig.

When she goes to the restaurant she meets Jase the chef, who is stunning, just like his little brother, Dani's ex. They never met when she dated his brother but she saw him in a Christmas party.

Their first meeting is awkward because of the surprise of all that, but the second time is a great time with little flirting and banter till she blurts about her relationship with his brother so it's awkward again.

Later on they found that they can be friends, the only problem is their attraction. This is a slow burn so we'll have time watching them grow closer. Both of them have insecurities to work and finally thanks to each other they'll work thought them (well they each work actively on some of that insecurities with their own methods).

I enjoyed this story because it's real that what you think is perfection maybe it's not perfect for you but what others think has flaws is the kind of perfection you need.

And I'm a fan of every cat daddy book boyfriend i find, and Jase is no less.

Jace is a top class chef, his staff love working for him. He puts everything into his job and his cat, yes he's a cat dad. If you look at his life from the outside its perfect but not everything you see is right. Beneath it all he feels unseen, a failure, inadequate and never enough, that's how his parents make him feel. Yet he still persevered to try to make them see him for who he is. Now he was helping cater for a massive symposium with a few different events, this could help the restaurant and his career. Dani has finally settled and hoped she would get the career she wanted and belong somewhere she could be herself. Since breaking up with an ex ten years ago never really forgetting him and always comparing never quite finding anyone to help her move on. When she meets the chef brought to help with the event she was planning she hoped finally she'd met the one, wow was he something the butterflies in her stomach yet there was just something about him he looked so familiar. This is the start of a brilliant story about moving on, accepting the past is exactly that the past. The characters are brilliantly written and their reservations and apprehensions are common placed. You find yourself understanding alot of the problems they have. Yet the chemistry is of the charts, although this is a slow burn story it's perfectly played out and totally believable. I can't find anything I didn't like about the book and and looking forward to the rest of the stories in this new series.

Don't Remind Me is fantastic contemporary romance and my first book by Lacey Burke. She writes with heart and give us an engaging, heartfelt love story!
I appreciated the author's note in the beginning that gave a heads -up on situations and and possible triggers but I have to give her accolades for the way she honors the main characters mental health and the benefits of counseling. Dani and Jace have very different issues in their background and their individual challenges are realistic. They were respectful and gentle with each other and it gave their story an added layer of authenticity.
Dani and Jace had chemistry that was undeniable but fought the attraction until they couldn't. He is a talented chef, and she is a fundraiser, event planner for a non-profit who are working together to pull off a multi - day symposium on Women's Health. They have a rocky start but as the story progresses, it becomes a sweet relationship with steam, laughter and tears! It checked every box for me and I honestly did not want to put it down.
I like Lacey Burke's writing style with her full fleshed out characters and her solid plotline. Two characters we meet in the story are the focus in the next book in her Oh Brother Romance Series and I am looking forward to reading it!

This was a quick, fun read that had me craving more from the very beginning. The novel had surprising character depth, realistic family dynamics, enough drama to fuel the story but no main characters just being dramatic for drama’s sake! Lacey Burke’s writing style was fantastic and fluid from the get-go, there’s nothing clunky, nothing forced. The pace flows nicely, and there’s a great mix of dialogue, inner monologue, and descriptive detail throughout.

The characters are fully developed and very realistic, the interactions between the two main characters feel wonderfully natural. I never came across sections of text that made me groan because of weirdness, and there was no cringey “macho” dialogue from the male character! I love that a main male character is flawed (like real life) and is written as self-aware enough to go to therapy and *actually* get something out of it, without there being any negativity about this fact or any suggestions (implied or otherwise) that he is not masculine enough because of this! (Soapbox: we need more of this! The romance genre gets a bad rep because of old gender stereotypes, even those meant to empower the female character.)

Overall, this was a great contemporary romance (with a little bit of steam and spice) that kept me engaged enough to stay up way too late and finish in one night. I definitely recommend it.

This is a delightful romance that blends sizzling chemistry, emotional growth, and a bit of culinary magic. The story follows Dani Mills, a woman who has finally found stability in her career and life after a messy breakup with her college boyfriend. But when she’s forced to collaborate with his older brother, Jase Beauford, on a catering project, her carefully constructed world begins to unravel.
Jase is everything Dani didn’t expect: confident, charming, and a talented chef who wins her over not just with his cooking, but with his kindness and attention. The chemistry between them is palpable, and the emotional journey Dani undergoes—balancing her past and her growing feelings for Jase—is both heartwarming and relatable.
The story is well-written with well-developed characters and the romance felt both real and earned. The dynamic between Dani and Jase provides the perfect mix of tension and tenderness, and the supporting characters add extra layers to the story. This is love a love story with both emotional depth and deliciously heated moments, and was an absolutely lovely read and I look forward to reading more of the Oh Brother series.

I didn't expect to fall so hard for Dani and Jase but here I am, having just finished the book, with a huge smile on my face. You know the feeling you get when you curl under a blanket with a cup of something warm, a view of a gloomy day outside, and a good book in your hand? That's how I feel after reading this book.

Both Jase and Dani felt so real that my heart ached for them. The issues that they had, their insecurities, hit hard in a way I wasn't expecting to read but were so well handled. I loved that the conflict with Alec and Dani's past was not some huge drama but instead was tied to Jase's character and growth. Also the mental health rep here was just *chef's kiss*. I was also really impressed with how woman's healthcare was addressed in the book. It was all within the context of the story itself (the fundraiser) and the character finding her own (Dani) but oof. I wanted to sit up and cheer at more then one point when this was discussed.

The only two complaints I have are:

- Reading this made me hungry

- This is Lacey' Burke's debut novel and I cannot go consume other works by her... yet.

I cannot wait to read Aubrey and Gabe's story next year.

I loved this book! Dani and Jase compliment each other so much. The character dynamic is spot on and the romance/love story is sweet. I have enjoyed this book so much.

Dani loves her job and the work she does. When she is put in charge for the marketing of a symposium, she didn't anticipate working with her ex boyfriend's older brother, Jase. She left that part of her past behind her or she thought she did. Jase is a hot guy and great chef that loves cooking and loves to see people enjoy his food. But he believes he is the black sheep of the family and his parents let's him know it. He feels he isn't good enough for anything or anyone. When these two meet, it's an attraction that can't be missed. Will their pasts get in the way of their present lives?

If you love hot romance, great characters, and book boyfriends, then you must read this book. It will make you feel all the feels for these characters.

Don’t Remind Me tells the story of Dani and Jase who meet while working on a fundraiser to build a pregnancy health center to help low income pregnant women access crucial maternal health services. Dani is planning the fundraiser and her company has partnered with Jase’s restaurant to cater the gala.
Except Jase is the older brother of her college boyfriend Alec, aka the one who got away.

This story was wonderful. I got sucked in right away. Both Dani and Jase are struggling in their own way with where they are in life, family dynamics and what kind of future they want for themselves. Having constantly lived in his little brother’s shadow, Jase is constantly second guessing himself. It was relatable and well written. I was rooting so hard for both of them, but especially for Jase to find his footing. I highly recommend this book.

Dani is in the midsts of planning an important career event, and her ex from a decade ago is on her mind. When she enters the restaurant to discuss plans for the event, she meets her exes brother, Jase. When trouble arises at work, she starts doing the work from the restaurant. Will they grow closer or will the ex linger between them?

I really enjoyed this story. The dynamic between Dani and Jase was delicious, and the way they were there for one another was lovely. His parents were real pieces of work, but it was good to see how his relationship with his brother change and evolve. There’s lots of sweet and tender moments, lots of steam and some very deep feelings and emotions discussed. Overall just a delightful read.

Dani is planning a big event and the chef responsible for the catering is the brother of her ex-boyfriend - very awkward. Now they have to work together and the attraction between them grows…

I really enjoyed reading this book so much. It has great characters: I really felt for Jase and his complicated relationship with his family and Dani is also very likable. The story was fast-paced and entertaining. I especially liked that in the end not all problems just magically disappear but they end up in a really good place.

For me a perfect romance that has me already looking forward to the next book of the series.

I’m just getting over my loooong reading slump and it’s pretty difficult for me to find a book that I really enjoyed. I’ve been skipping books left and right, even the most popular ones. So I’m very fortunate that I was given a chance to read an ARC of this book.

I liked everything about it. The writing, the characters, the setting. Although I was a little weirded out about the comparison between the brothers in the beginning, it didn’t last long. Great chemistry between the main characters. Very little angst, which is always a plus in my book. It didn’t drag, or had any unnecessary addition to the storyline. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a light, fun, easy read.

It took me awhile to actually get into this book, but once I did—it as a pretty good read. While the storyline was slow to grab my attention, once it got rolling it was easy to engage. The characters were downright annoying in places—and I basically wanted to smack them so they’d get this story rolling! 🙄 The plot was really straightforward and not too many surprises. The HEA was laid out from the beginning, so it was easy to root for your favorite character…which made the good times extra special. This book should be on everyone’s TBR…it’s a really great read! Sweet story about learning to love yourself when you let go of others' expectations. Jase and Dani both struggle with anxiety and how to embrace themselves and what they want. Dani is a little farther ahead on her acceptance journey when she meets Jase, the older brother of an ex she felt like was the one who got away. Jase has spent his whole life feeling like he doesn't measure up to his younger brother and who's parents don't hesitate to let him know what a disappointment he is. As their relationship grows, they both learn how to start loving themselves as they fall in love with each other.

This was such a fun read. I love a book that just jumps right into the story, and doesn’t need a ton of background or world-building (I’ve been on a fantasy kick, can you tell?)

I loved the writing style, and will definitely be reading more of Lacey’s writing!

The characters were relatable (love a powerful, working FMC), the love story was real and interesting, and the story had a great flow. I hate when a book just goes on for too long, ya know?

Overall, I would definitely recommend both this book, and the author!!

This contemporary romance focuses on Dani, who has just been given the biggest opportunity of her career. Planning a huge 3 day fundraiser and symposium for the organization she works for. But imagine her surprise when she's forced to pair with the chef brother of the ex boyfriend she can't quite seem to get out of her mind.

Give me more pro mental health awareness MMC's like Jase please. I am really loving that this has become more and more prevalent in books. His open talk of his therapist appointments and how he readily relies on them to help control chaotic emotions is refreshing.

I really enjoyed the connection between both Dani and Jase. Even with the awkwardness of their situation. And the slow burn chemistry was on point. As well as Jase's protective, touch her and die. mentality towards Dani. Who finds herself in a threatened position due to the gala having some connection to safe abortion.

We're also given a great cast of side characters in both Jase and Dani's coworkers and the found family they become.

This is my first book by Burke, but it won't be my last!

TW: abortion issues, threatening letters, strained family relations, mental health

I thoroughly enjoyed “Don’t Remind Me” by Lacey Burke. I ate up the back-and-forth between Dani and Jace, and the tension and chemistry of their relationship kept me invested from beginning to end. “Don’t Remind Me” is not only a compelling love story, but also a story of two relatable, complex, and lovable characters figuring out who they are, and I enjoyed the plot of personal growth just as much as the steamy romance. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next, and am excited to see what Burke offers up in the future!

I enjoyed this romance read. I like less common tropes and this one, ex’s brother, really caught my interest. The story was engaging and I liked the characters. The romance had good intensity and build. The backdrop of the event, restaurant, and working situations added a lot of depth. There are elements included in the story that involve threats of violence and reproductive choice. This is an open door romance with innuendo and a moderate amount of strong harsh language throughout.

I loved it! Dani and Jase are super sweet, the chemistry between them is gorgeous and I could not put it down! I felt for Jase and the problems he‘s having with his family. The writing was fast paced and entertaining. Most romance books tend to end with all problems sorted out but this one is a bit different. He haven‘t sorted out everything but you do get the feeling they‘re in a good place. I‘m excited to read the rest of the series.

This was recommended by a friend & I thought this was such a cute new feel good contemporary romance! Loved Dani’s character, but Jase…. Oofta🔥😍🥵
I mean, the man is a chef, he goes to therapy & he’s a cat dad!

Loved the spice, loved the women’s reproductive topics, both Dani & Jase were super relatable, & I loved the healthy boundaries he wasn’t scared to set for the sake of his relationship & his own happiness.

Would definitely read the next book!

Enjoyed this book more than I thought I would - it was well written and easy to read. Characters were likable and relatable - nothing seemed too overly dramatic like some Romance books tend to be. Looking forward to the next one in the series!
