Crowned by Wings #1

A Bond of Fire and Roses

Rate this book
The dragon rider might have taken everything from me.
My home, my family, and my crown.
But I vowed long ago he would never take my heart.
I survived ten years being tortured by his crazy worshippers. I know I can survive anything the king throws at me.
Because if this usurper thinks I’m going to bend and break to his will now that I’m his wife, he doesn’t know what his new queen is capable of.
I will make him bend and break.
I might not be a dragon rider like him, but I have dragon blood in my veins from an ancient bond forged by my ancestors, and its fire is fueled by the hatred I hold just for him.
A hatred that burns.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I should have killed the princess when I burned her world to ash.
It was the least she deserved after what her parents did that day. But my own stubborn dragon refused to destroy the one person the gods decided was fated to me.
For years I have ignored her existence and tried to forget her screams. For years I‘ve tried to hate her and burn her memory from my mind, but now the time has come to claim my betrothed...
And make her my queen.

What an absolute nothingburger of a story, it doesn’t even try being one part of an overarching narrative, wastes an obscene amount of time telling essentially 48 hours of real life time, with characterization so bad i can't even fathom what the fuck was anyone thinking greenlighting this.

Worldbuilding has barely any explaination at all and just hints at the next book for anything resembling an explaination. It doesn’t work like that, you can't say nothing and then "nudge-nudge- find out next book" me. Why would I read next book if that's something you can do? What is even to be interested in to interest the reader? Six, then just Two kingdoms, one of them doesn’t exist anymore so it's litterally just the MMC kingdom who won and has essentially nothing more to do. Yeah witches exist, but nothing even resembling a witch presents itself until the very last page of the book, in the form of the arrows that negate magic who have never been introduced before and have zero all around set-up in the story. I should say I appreciate that some parts of the population is still on the old king's side:

“May Hekai be with you, princess. Some of our families still remember who you are, who your parents were, and support you. We pray for you and your rule. Forever the moon queen.”

(And by the way Mae should acknowledge this girl is going to die. I'm fine with it, plenty of people are willing to sacrifice themselves for a cause big as this one, just wishing FMC would acknowledge this girl will be executed for covering her escape, which happens and somehow we're shocked about it...?) but at the same time...WHY do so many people still like the old king and queen to the point their rebellion has turned into a nation wide emergency?

Her parents were obsessed with diamonds and gold

Even if it cost hundreds of thousands of their people’s lives and forced half a million of them to live underground and suffer to serve them. Any crime that was committed....they were thrown into the mines. Sometimes they were sent down there for no good reason. Their families were sent too,

They were locked in, never allowed to see daylight or feel fresh air again. Children were born in the mud, and died in the same cave, never once seeing an ounce of the outside world. I don’t think they even got to see the sky or what a cloud looked like. All the death, pain and misery, just to mine for gold and diamonds

The mines were the worst of it, but slavery was rife in their kingdom. And it was brutal. Freedom was a dream, not a reality, until I flew in on my dragons and burnt that kingdom into a free flame.

Why do people still want her on the throne? If the MMC's reign is so good and fair, while the old king was so bad, how come there's even a meningful rebellion? Also, if we're to believe whay Erax says (and I think the story means for the reader to take this as simple truth) wow, "Comically evil" doesn't even come close to how cartoonish these people must have been.

I took away all their slaves, burnt down the mines that fed them gold and diamonds, and told them to fucking serve me or die.

So, while i agree with the slaves thing, i also think burning the mines means fucking up the economy of the entire region (not to mention trade with what must have been your own kigdom, since only two are left) so you probably caused a shitload of starvation, you could have made the mines into something that actually benefitted the population, but no.

And what about the magic? Well...Bonding with the dragon is all done in the moment, none of the others tell her "hey, once it hatches, you should get in the water ASAP cause you will otherwise die, also fly ASAP after that because otherwise you will die" and they all just...wait for her to be in mortal danger to tell her what to do

“Fuck. Fly, fly, fly. Please!”

“Not in that language!” Erax barrels through the air. “NIVAROSS!”

The dragons understand english, why do they require a dragon thongue command?

As far as human magic goes, it's implied humans have magic, but it's never showed outside of the never heard before ability to heal eggs so....???

The plot is barely an afterthought: FMC is a woe me i'm a victim, tries to escape, MMC gets her, brings her to the palace where they marry and fall in love and she bonds a dragon at random, then hey, here's a betrayal finale with zero setup from people who have no reason to betray the MMC, great, thank you. There is nothing actually happening outside of "romance" (we shall have words) or getting the dragon, i'm not kidding, NOTHING happens.

But hey, a story can be great even without focussing on Plot, right? After all, the really great stories are those about great people, as some say: "Character is king", so let's take a look at them, shall we?

First our lovely protagonist: She starts off with a less than poor understanding of what consequences her actions will bring down, see the maid she essentially condemns to death or:

in this life, in this prison, it’s too risky for him to even talk to me in public, let alone touch me. The punishment would be a slow and painful death if we were ever caught alone together, and I’d never risk that.

You are alone together right now and somehow i don't think someone walking in and seeing you both lieing on the bed will say "oh it doesn’t matter, they are clothed".
But hey, she has a goal right? She wants to escape. And she almost gets it done by chapter three, good job Mae, way to go. So...about the rest of the book

What
the
actual
fuck
is
this?

He called me his wife. Not his betrothed or his intended, or even his future wife. His wife.

Ew

Once I’ve eaten, I lay back on the bed, my belly full and thirst quenched. It’s then something else rises within me from last night. Something I never expected to feel in the presence of my enemy…something I felt with Loch. Lust. Desire.

Can you spell Stockholm? He has given you exactly zero reasons to like him. You can't do this already

The ocean has always calmed me—always made me feel less alone in a world burning around me.

You've not been to the ocean since the world was burnt around you

The king hates me as much as I hate him, and lust will always pale in the shadow of hatred.

You are clear evidence of the opposite.

Every action feels performative since none of them follow a throughline: we don't like Erax because of something he does, but because he calls us "wife". That's it? That's how easy it is to fall in love with the guy who (in her POV) invaded her kingdom, burned down her home and killed her parents, while locking her in (essentially) a torture dungeon for ten years, just to get her out when he needs a heir? Are you joking?

We can't decide if we "hate" the king enough to confront him, or we're running from him, without any actions or words in between to justify changing our mind about him. She doesn't even trust her own choices enough to stick by them on principle: for example Erax asks her if he should kill the nuns who hurt her. She says let them go, he straight up ignores her and has his dragon kill them, then we're meant to feel good about it, like she didn't want to give the order but still craved their deaths. What the fuck? At the very least have the spine to decide for yourself and stick to that decision. Him not caring about your very clearly stated choice is not exactly a good sign.

And the switch from reluctant attraction to outward love never has a justified tipping point: when Erax shows her his reason to invade, She's already on his side, she already guesses he had a legitimate reason to burn down her home, steal her kingdom and kill her parents, why? Because she likes him, there is no explaination for it so it must mean it's because she wants him to have a good explaination for his actions because she likes him. It's gross. Is it because

The gods don’t believe in coincidence, only fate. And so, do I.

It can't be, right? No, we geniunely think this was a legit love story because we then have what's supposedto be the crowning moment of her being trusted to hold her own:

all of Erax’s friends, fill the cave, but Erax holds a fist up, stopping them at his side. His eyes do not leave me. He is supporting me, even in this.

By this point the author just assumes there has been enough interactions between them to justify some deep seated trust and bond, there hasn't, he has never supported any of her decisions, this "even in this" comes out of complete left-field

Well...our MMC is just as bad: I'm legit convinced he suffers from split personality, there's no other way to accomodate who he is normally with the surprise feminism skit during the dragon taming. Let's go one by one on his major beats:

First off: why does he like her? Because she's beautiful? Because his dragon likes her? Maybe, but that doesn't mean he should be attracted to her. It surely isn't because of her character...

I was hoping my bride would be some obedient, quiet princess that wouldn’t push me too far.

So yeah, just because of her looks I guess. Fanthastic.

“Don’t get it twisted, Mist. All you are to me is an object, a piece of my property, and an attack to the king’s property is an attack to the king himself."

Careful kid, you might cut your thongue with that edgelord talk

"I still don’t want to marry her. She’s the child of my enemy— I’ve spent my whole life making sure ended up dead for their treason. Do you remember what they did?"

You had ten years to have this discussion, why are you speaking up two days before the wedding?

“Now, when the king who rides a fucking dragon, tells you to run… run.”

If you need to remind others why they should fear you, it means they often forget who you are, this is not the cool and dangerous persona you want to project

If my wife thinks pretending to sleep will get her out of consummating our marriage, she doesn’t know her husband at all.

What the fuck is wrong with you? Seriously. No, it doesn’t matter that he ends up passing out, this was his legit intention, actual, honest to god rape. No legal loopholes, no ambiguities, just plain rape.

But no, he was actually a medieval suffragette all along, apparently

Ivane moves to Noble’s side. He is an excellent rider and fucking lethal in battle, but he has a backwards view on women which means we never fully get along.

It’s not the first time I’ve punched Adryn over something dumb about women that has come out of his mouth.

My dragon riders are loyal to me, but their judgement needs to be readjusted.

You fucking liar, you wanted a tame princess who would shut up and do whatever she was told, you aren't some equal opportunity champion.

His family are all the same and see women as somehow less than us, or just things to own and have our kids.

His family? How about you saying over and over your (forced) wife is an object in your possession ? This is legit some split personality disorder, there's no way someone can be this un-self aware.

Other characters? Uh...her friend who abandoned Mae, her uncle who essentially also abandoned her, his Noble friend (heh) who shouldn't have any reason whatsoever to sell them off to the undisclosed and nebulous "witches"...I don't even know who they are, they barely even exist.

"Uncle Dasinth was wrong to send you here. Where is he?”
Ambre turns and walks to the door. “You’re not really our family, so why would he be here today? I’m sure he has better things to do.”

It's...the king's wedding. The sheer stupidity of all these muppets is honestly draining.

I do feel like there should be content warnings for this book, for example: dubious consent, suicidal thoughts, and a highly unlikeable MMC.
The book is in desperate need of another run with an editor. There were inconsistencies in plot, time, setting, world-building, magic, history, and characters. Many times I was completely taken out of the story and had to backtrack, only to be even more confused. Grammatically incorrect sentence structure, missing words, and sentences that were just really confusing occurred way too often.

In theory, I could’ve overlooked all of that, but I also found the MMC incredibly irritating. His POVs really did him no favors and made it exponentially worse. During the steamy scenes, I was really uncomfortable because it felt highly manipulative with (in my opinion) dubious consent. I’m open to discussion on this one since I don’t see anyone else mention it.
I’m kind of sad because the book started great, and I was really excited. However, it just spiraled downward the more I read, and even though the plot twist at the end was delicious, I will most likely not continue the series.

Gorgeous cover, not-so-gorgeous book.

Whenever I felt like I was getting close to enjoying the book, something happened that completely threw me off and made me second guess why I was reading it. The MMC was so far from likable it wasn’t even funny, and I was actively hoping they wouldn’t be together because there was nothing about him that I liked. It truly was enemies as far as enemies to lovers, but it never felt like they actually enjoyed being around each other. I have a tendency to adore any book with dragons, but this one was a massive disappointment. I will not be reading the second book.

MMC is… concerning.

Not a fan of how much r*pe culture is shown in the perspective of the male lead… forcing her? Not caring about consent? Drunkenly thinking about forcing her? Wanted to read this as a palate cleanser between my dark romances and was thrown into a CNC without a clue. Has potential to be a great read if the plot deepens but as it stands it’s pretty surface level. Best of luck to the author on the next book and I hope we get a deeper look into the lives of the characters!

Maelena lost it all to a dragon rider... her parents were killed, her castle destroyed, and her freedom taken away. All she knows is torture at the hands of convent sisters who should be grooming her to be a fitting queen.

This book hooks you from the start, setting a dark and angry tone.
A decent chunk of worldbuilding and info is coming our way, but the authors give it to you gradually, as Maelena is learning. There are some huge gaps concerning the history and the reason Erax went on a total destructive bender, but let's hope we get to that part in the next installment.

Maelena is a clueless princess. She's sheltered and doesn't know much about the real world. I get that her life was messed up, but she's a bit too naive. I won't spoil anything, but there is much more going on than we know at the end of this book!
Do I like the princess? Hmm, difficult question. While I understand where she's coming from, she's rather blind to the truth in front of her sometimes.

Erax, the dragon rider who destroyed her world, is shrouded in mystery. We don't really know his reasoning or why he acted against the other kingdom, as he was still very young.
I hate that he didn't bother checking in on Maelena for ten whole years (seriously?). So yeah, he has a lot of redeeming and explaining to do.

There are many twists and turns throughout the book, keeping you on your toes. Attraction, pain, death, and betrayal seem to be the main keywords of the story so far.
And that cliffhanger... yikes! That was brutal!

As for me, I'm not sure where I rate the book. I love the premise, and the ending made me want to read the next book right away. But the characters and their hot/cold attitudes toward each other were pretty frustrating. We never dove deep into the story/history/reasoning, which was a missed chance, in my opinion.
Some editing issues throughout the book also pulled me out of the story.

Let's hope the next installment brings more polish and backstory to this promising series.

I really wanted to like it more!

It’s in serious need of some editing (I’m still not sure what the MMCs dragon is called because it swapped between two different spellings). There were some general verb errors scattered throughout that took me out of the story while I was trying to figure out what was being said.

The timeline from the FMC being taken from her childhood “prison” to the wedding day was described as only a couple of days but then mentioned weeks(?) I’m still not sure how long it took…

I loved the idea but everything was kind of rushed and not hashed out enough. There are such great ideas and themes that could have been focussed on more to build suspense and tension.

The declarations of love just “happened” because they spent 2 days together and wanted to sleep with each other and he took some revenge for her (even though I’m unsure whether she actually cared? It was kind of glossed over)

So rushed at the end with her powers and dragon and then twist of the enemy. It was way too fast when the first portion of the book felt slow. The flow just didn’t make sense to me. Made me cringe and for that alone not sure if I would continue the series

My only qualm about this is that I needed MORE. The plot was just too quick for how many things were going on, everything was SO good it was just so so quick that it breezed over so many things that I wanted more of.
Like the dragon going from infant to full grown in the blink of an eye, glossing over the whole curse and witches and assassins thing, no real description or world building or anything. While I appreciate a 300 page book every now and then this really needed to be 500 pages at least (I feel like any good dragon book needs to cause there’s just too much).
I am very excited for book 2 in just a few weeks though cause oh my god the cliff hanger!!!

Love love love this book!!!

I loved this book. It was so good. None of G. Baileys books ever disappoints, I just wish this book had been longer.
This book ends on one heck of a cliffhanger and betrayal. If you love romantasy, dark morally Grey villains with fierce fmcs and dragons... this is your series.

Book 2 is now out. So excited.

This is a must read!!!

Oh, my word! That ending! Will he live???? It had me praying right along with Mist!

From the start, we are dumped into the horror of the reality of the female lead. Dead parents, a destroyed kingdom, and "guardians" that would make child abusers look like fairies. Talk about childhood trauma. Although the authors manage to get you emotionally involved in her trauma, they lose you again when it comes to her struggle to overcome this trauma and form a relationship. I felt that this healing process happened too fast to be entirely realistic.

The male lead was giving me a lot of whiplash. He hates the female lead and her family for what they did to him, yet the female lead enthralls him. We don't know exactly what this supposed act of no return was. We believe they killed the baby dragons, but we're not sure yet. The fact that he continues to protect her and her honor redeems him a lot.

Those last chapters were a rush of finding out the truth (which was more of a suggestion than actually finding out), claiming a dragon, awakening baby eggs, a catastrophic kiss, a near-death experience, a proclamation of love mixed with hate speech, an almost death, betrayal, and kidnappings. Like wow.

It leaves you wondering who else is part of this rebellion and if the female lead will now be left to fight her way out of a different cage. With jailers who betrayed her trust in the worst way. Not only by using her as a pawn while giving lipservice to the idea of loving her - or caring for her - but also by not trusting her enough to include her in their plans.

And will the new dragon babies be safe, or will history be doomed to repeat itself?

What an amazing start to a new series! This book sucks you in and doesn’t release you until the absolute tragedy that is that last line leaving you on a massive cliffhanger that will have you begging G. Bailey and Scarlett Snow for book two! The characters in this story were everything, their anger, their hatred, their undeniable bond, and their chemistry off the charts will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see if they’re going to kiss or come to blows… it’s almost always a 50/50 toss up! Maelena was such a great character, resilient, relatable, with a touch of naivety due to truths that have been withheld from her, her whole life. And Erax is just the most perfectly possessive, brooding alphahole you’ve ever met with a soft spot only for Maelena and a driving need to do what’s right for his people and his kingdom! So if you’re looking for a Romantasy book filled to the brim with amazing characters, banter, so much world building, an off the charts sizzling enemies to lovers romance, betrayals left and right, a cliffhanger that will leave you in pieces and did I mention DRAGONS! Than this book is not to be missed!

Fantastic start to new series!

Years ago, Princess Maelina and the kingdom she grew up in were taken by the neighboring kingdom young King – the kingdom destroyed, and her parents killed. She was sent to live with the priestesses who treated her horribly just to await the day the King decided to come for her. Trying to get out beforehand, she attempts to escape with her friend Lochlan but is captured again by the Dragon King who tells her that she is to be his bride.

Now moved to his castle, she can’t escape the feelings that King Erax brings out in her… and even though she knows escape is futile, she tries time and again. Erax was the first to bring back the dragons to his kingdom and has helped multiple men in his regimen bond with other dragons, but when his new wife bonds with the first ice dragon born alive in centuries, everyone is mystified. He hates her and her family for what they have done (although we haven’t heard the full story on that yet) but he cant deny the feelings he also shares for her.

The ending is a bit of a shock and a cliffhanger – OMG – I just have to know what happens next! Great book!

BABY DRAGONS 😄

I read this book in a single afternoon. I really enjoyed it! Easy read. Engaging. Yeah there were some editing issues but they didn’t ruin the story for me at all and the book doesn’t deserve low stars for them. The story flowed really well. Easy read. The MMC was intensely possessive but it wasn’t cringey. The ending was annoying af because cliffhangers make me scream but that just means it was a good story and I’m impatient for book 2!

Also. There NEEDS to be content warnings at the beginning of this book. I was not personally affected but there are scenes that need to come with warnings.

Best quote:
“Who did this to you?” His voice is dangerously low and close, so close that his breath touches my neck and cheek. “Who the fuck did this to you? Tell me now!” Tears slip from my lashes as my body trembles beneath his hand. “You know who did it.”

Worst quote:
I groan as pleasure surges in my balls, and I want nothing more than to rip her clothes off and fuck her in front of everyone here until she is dripping with me.

I mean. I wasn’t bothered by this but I was kind of cringing when I read it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.⭐️ 3.5 stars rounded up!

Read this in 24 hours and honestly could not put it down. The worldbuilding in this could use some work. I wish it was more fleshed out and we got to see more of the world because it is so interesting and unique. Hopefully we’ll see more of that in book 2. Erax was the highlight of this book for me. I loved the way he cared about protecting his people and his new queen. All the delicious possessiveness and overprotection to love. Our fmc was badass and had an actual reason to hate the mmc and the turn from enemies to lovers actually makes sense although it is a little insta-lovey in my opinion. This book definitely needed another editing pass, but nothing too jarring or anything that took me out of the story.

I actually really loved the way dragons are portrayed in this book. They aren’t a major part of the plot and the way they bond/connect with their rider is different then what I have seen in many other dragon books which I really loved.

Overall, this was a really fun read and I would definitely recommend it if you like romantasy and the fourth wing/ACOTAR vibe. Nothing revolutionary but very enjoyable!

This was an amazing start to the series it was fast paced filled with tension, spice, a lot of fire and hatred. With a spitfire princess who will try almost anything to gain her freedom and is not about to take her possessive king’s bs lying down and a king who falls fast and soon realizes she’s gonna keep him on his toes. After losing her family and her home to an enemy kingdom Maelena has struggled with the abuse the people charged with protecting her has inflicted on her since she was a child. Now the man who stole her life is back to take her as his queen. But Marlena isn’t going to go quietly or make it easy for him. Seeing Maelena and Erax fight there attraction to each other because of their past was fun to see and his touch her and die vibes were swoon worthy. I love getting glimpses into Erax POV as he came to realization that she didn’t know what was going on in parents kingdom which allows him to see the good aspects of Maelena that his hatred for her would’ve clouded his mind to. I also enjoyed the mysteries surrounding the land and its people as Maelena slowly begins to see the differences between Erax’s and her parent’s kingdoms. I can’t wait for book 2 that cliffhanger was brutal.

A Bond of Fire and Roses marks the captivating beginning of the Crowned by Wings series.

"The dragon rider might have taken everything from me—my home, my family, and my crown. But I vowed long ago he would never take my heart."

Maelena's journey to becoming a dragon rider is both arduous and inspiring, marked by the devastating loss of her parents, the destruction of her castle, and the ultimate loss of her freedom. The raw emotions she experiences are truly heartbreaking, highlighting her resilience and growth throughout the story. The dragons themselves are brilliantly portrayed, adding to the allure of this fantasy world that's currently thriving in literature.

The plot flows seamlessly, making it easy to get lost in Maelena's struggles and triumphs. This debut is a strong start to what promises to be an exciting series!.

I finished this book two days ago and it is still lingering in my subconscious.

Let me start by saying, Erax, all these stars are for you! Oh my goodness!! If you are looking for a new book boyfriend who is morally greay and absolutely obsessed with his woman, then I highly recommend picking up this book.

Yes, there are some faults in the book that need editing, but the story is fast paced, intriguing and leaves you wanting more. Can we mention that cliffhanger...!

I also really enjoyed the incorporation of the dragons and their lore in this book.

I really had the best time reading this, and can not wait for the next installment.

I recommend this book if you like:
🌹 enemies to lovers
🌹 dragons
🌹 morally grey MMC
🌹 spice

Was this good? Ehhhh, but did I still eat it up? YES! I cannot wait for book two after that ending… I need it now.

⚠️SPOILERS BELOW⚠️

I’m not going to lie, the way everyone treated her was so annoying. She was literally 10, and she had no way of knowing that her parents were bad people. All she knew was that her future husband had killed her parents and placed her with nuns who tortured her; I would be upset and try to run away too. Although this book was short, I loved how they were drawn to each other and fell for each other, despite initially hating each other. Her bonding an ice dragon and him being so proud was amazing! That ending though… I did not see Noble, Erax’s bestie, betraying him. The fact that he was initially betrothed to her was insane! I’m so scared for her , but I hope her dragon can help to protect her.

If you ask me in a couple of days if I remember reading this book, I’ll say yes.
But if you ask me to give you details about this book, I will not be able to.
This was a super quick fantasy read that I know I will not remember a single detail to. It held my attention while reading and it was good enough that I did not DNF.
Seeing that book 2 doesn’t come out until July of 2025, I know I’ll never remember to pick it up and continue the story.

Give it a go if you want something quick to get you to your reading goal!

This book was a decent read—not bad, but not the best either. I feel like there were areas that could have been improved. The first meeting between the characters, when she was trying to escape and he found her, was great. The banter was sharp, the MMC was flirting, and she even tried to stab him, which added some tension. But after that, it felt a bit flat. Her intensity seemed to drop, and the MMC didn’t quite keep up the energy I was hoping for.

There also needed to be more explanation in some areas. For example, how did he know she was trying to escape, but didn’t realize she was being abused by the priestesses?

Lastly, when he takes her to reveal the truth, they get distracted and never actually get to the big reveal, which left me wanting more closure on that part of the story.

This plot has huge potential. I was hooked from the start. But, it desperately needs editing. I never comment on this matter but this was pretty constant that I was taken out of the story and confused. Quite a lot.
I will definitely be reading the second book but I hope it goes through a more in depth editing process.

The authors marketed it as ‘high heat’ which can be a little misleading to us that read smut on the regular. It only had one full $ex scene. This book is sexually charged but if we are talking number of scenes and explicitness then it doesn’t quite match up on an avid smut readers scale.

Dragons and more

I really like it right from the start and has a pretty great plot. However I gave it 4 stars for 3 reasons. SPOILERS….

….1) he still hasn’t told her the truth and I’m sure it’s a good reason and would probably make her understand him more and 2) I hate when an author keeps hinting at something important but doesn’t talk about it. Like this curse. Just spit it out or come up with a reason for it not to be talked about, it’s not teasing, it’s annoying. 3) what was up with that jealous girl? She was mentioned twice but seems irrelevant, if her story is important I think it should have been referenced more or left out entirely

There’s enemies-to-lovers and then there’s this. I didn’t make it through the first three chapters. The MMC slaughters the FMC’s family and then leaves her with a religious zealot who torture her. Her uncle doesn’t try to help her. We aren’t given a reason for the amount of hate and vitriol he spits at her- and frankly I was uncomfortable and a little nauseated. Once again, I didn’t make it all the way through the first chapter, but enemies-to-lovers is my trope and even I couldn’t see how this could possibly end in a non-toxic relationship. Other people seem to have enjoyed this book, but I couldn’t get past the premise.

this was a short and quick read and that’s the best thing i can say about it. bad way to start cataloguing my reads on this app 😭

constantly contradicting what was just said, annoying fmc and unlikeable mmc. ending came out of nowhere. there were strange bouts of info dumping that explained almost nothing important—and, again, was contradicted by something said later. the sex scenes felt way too coercive, stockholm syndrome-esque, and probably should be labeled for mildly dubious consent. also, what happened to using man/woman? the use of male/female was irritating and incredibly hard to overlook throughout the entire read.

I'm so mad rn. AGAIN. i've read a book with a cliffhanger that i cannot comprehend. Why i do this to myself? i do not know. But do i continue to read unfinished series. Yes.

I was initially a bit skeptical about this read but immediately the plot had me and kept me curious throughout. And it just kept on giving !

Oh how i love possessive, broody men in books. Specifically, possessive dragon men. Erax's possessiveness over maelena is everything. It was the typical scarred and traumatised but stubborn and witty wmc and 'who did this to you' moody possessive mmc but i eat it up every. single. time.

Also THE BETRAYAL?? why didn't i see this coming ? i canttt. Consider me gob smacked

DNF, the author couldn’t keep her story straight. One chapter the king hates her with a passion, the next he’s completely obsessed with her. There’s no explanation or transition, it’s like a switch is flipped. Later in the book we meet the king’s grandmother who used to be a dragon rider before her dragon died. Two chapters later, main character gets her own dragon to ride around and the king is declaring her the first female dragon rider. Apparently his grandmother didn’t count? Bugged me too much to keep reading.
