English title: Love of the Divine Tree
4.5 stars

I watched a couple episodes of the drama when it first came out but had trouble getting into it. When I saw that the novel translation was completed recently, I was really excited to give the story another chance in book form, and it didn't disappoint. I really liked the story and the underlying thread of mystery running throughout the novel, but the romance was a bit frustrating for me, hence why I'm only giving 4.5 stars.

**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**

Unlike the drama, the novel starts in the present time and follows the FL, Xue Ranran, from birth as a fruit on the Reincarnation Tree and as she joins the Xishan sect under the ML Su Yishui's leadership. There's a complicated past tying Ranran and Su Yishui together, but since Ranran has no memories of her previous self as the ML's shifu Mu Qingge in this life, the ML doesn't mention anything to her so that she can grow up carefree and focus on what she loves, such as good food. What helps keep her identity as the reborn Mu Qingge hidden is that Mu Qingge's sister, Mu Ranwu, was also reborn, and the sister was reborn into Mu Qingge's body, so for the longest time, no one has any indication that the person occupying Mu Qingge's body isn't her but her sister.

I really liked Ranran's character and personality. I can see why she had so many suitors in her previous life, and even in this life, she wins people over so easily with her kind and carefree attitude that clearly distinguishes right from wrong. The ML's character was okay too. Very cold and aloof for the most part, but occasionally you can catch glimpses of his suppressed desires. However, there were a couple characters that I absolutely couldn't stand, with the FL's sister at the top of the list. I couldn't believe how far she was willing to go to prove that she's superior to FL in this reborn life. Truly a despicable character. I also wasn't a huge fan of Wei Jiu, given his obsessiveness with the FL and his cruelty and indifference towards his female subordinate who has feelings for him.

The romance is nonexistent for the first part of the story and eventually slowly builds up, but it's a glacial journey. I wouldn't read this book if you're looking for a cute fluffy romance. Just when you think the FL and ML are ready to acknowledge their feelings, something happens to the ML and he forgets all of his memories related to the FL, so they have to start from zero again. He eventually regains his memories of her, but just after they get married and experience a few blissful days of intimacy, they're summoned to the heavens to suffer judgment, and the ML is struck down and his soul barely survives as a sapling. Then it's the FL's turn to wait for the tree to grow and the fruit bearing the ML's soul to drop so that he can return to earth and reunite his family. I felt like I was constantly waiting for the romance to really take off and it never happened. There were some cute moments sprinkled in throughout the story, but it wasn't nearly enough!

More so than the romance, I really enjoyed the story. Following along with Ranran's cultivation adventures was fun. I had a good laugh when her first batch of Clearing Heart pills, which is supposed to clear the mind and suppress mortal desires as the name suggests, stimulated the appetite of anyone who ate it, even breaking her shifu's three year fast, all because she couldn't stop thinking longingly of juicy pork buns as she was making them. Obvious not everything is so lighthearted, but the author does a good job of mixing humor into the story whenever possible, which I really appreciated.

The story flowed well and never felt boring. The author moves from one event to another fairly seamlessly, and while all of these incidents seem unrelated, we eventually learn there's an underlying thread tying everything together. There's a mastermind manipulating the scenes and controlling the ML and FL to do his bidding. For the longest time, they're completely unaware of this, as it's done so subtly that it takes them a while to notice. I was really impressed by the author's ability to weave these delicate details into the story.

For my own reference, the plot of the story at a high level goes something like this:

I would highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a good xianxia story.

Ending my review with some memorable quotes from the story:

Xue Ranran really tries to butter up her master whenever possible, even going so far as to compliment his face when he's still suffering from a blurred face curse haha

The moment the words left her lips, Yuchen—who had just taken a sip of water—promptly choked, spraying a mouthful straight onto his sister Yutong’s head.

Even with his steadfast loyalty to Su Yishui, not even he could manage to say such a completely baseless, sugar-coated lie with a straight face.

That cursed face, sealed by the Rongmian Curse, was absolutely terrifying by any standard. He and his sister usually made a point never to mention it, not even in passing. And as for Su Yishui—he hardly ever showed his face at all.

But today, it seemed, the master had decided to do just that: pull off his veil and scare the living daylights out of a little village girl.

Even more absurd was the fact that the girl had answered him with such wide, honest eyes—so full of earnest sparkle she might as well have been trying to flirt with a lake spirit under the autumn moon.

And somehow… Su Yishui seemed quite pleased by the flattery.

---------------

the writing style is so humorous. love how pragmatic Ranran is!

Qiu Xi'er, predictably, was gifted a brand-spanking-new copper furnace. It was a magnificent beast, all gleaming metal, with a three-clawed golden lid crowned by a regal copper turtle. Seriously impressive.

Then it was Xue Ranran’s turn. By this point, it seemed the Master’s coffers—or perhaps just his interest—had been thoroughly depleted. She was fobbed off with an ancient, soot-blackened iron monstrosity that looked like it had survived several apocalypses.

Ran Ran had a sneaking suspicion the damn thing had been previously melted down and crudely patched back together; the repairs on its base were glaringly obvious.

Qiu Xi'er, bless her cotton socks, actually looked embarrassed by the blatant favoritism and even offered to swap. But Ran Ran, with a shrug that conveyed a universe of not giving a damn, declined.

New, old, what did it matter? She’d already been officially stamped as "grade-A cultivation-reject."
No point in her hogging a perfectly good new furnace, just occupying space and producing nothing of value, right?

Better to lean into her designated role as the resident pupil.

---------------

Ranran cracks me up with her pragmatism XP

Yu Chen slammed his hand on the table. "How could he not win? You're underestimating Master, which is blasphemous! He was a cultivation prodigy who formed his core at just sixteen! And the righteous path of cultivation is to vanquish demons and protect the world! How can we be afraid of death when facing evil?"

Xue Ranran listened with wide eyes. She had only become a disciple to save her own life. If she had known that cultivation also involved risking her life in battles, she really should have considered it more carefully before becoming a disciple.

Her mother had said she would come down the mountain to marry someday!

---------------

FL's focus is always on the food haha

In recent centuries, other smaller sects had very little chance of producing exceptional talents unless they were truly gifted, because they had chosen the wrong sect. As for such a wonderful opportunity to select top disciples, it was hardly likely to fall upon the heads of the mediocre disciples of Xishan Mountain.

So, when their Second Martial Uncle read the letter announcing the opening of the Marrow Cleansing Pool Gathering, Qiu Xi’er merely nodded enviously, while Ranran asked curiously what famous local specialties and delicacies could be found in the Celestial Vein Mountain area.

---------------

I love that Ranran isn't curious at all about her previous life as it has no impact on her current life

Seeing her fall silent, Su Yu seemed to realize at last that Su Yishui had kept her completely in the dark about her own history.

He gave a knowing smile. “Fate does love to play its tricks, doesn’t it? Smoke and mirrors… illusions and truth. Do you not want to know who you really are?”

Ranran shook her head and met his gaze directly. “If this is what it means to be reincarnated, then I was born anew the moment I fell from that tree. Who I was before doesn’t matter anymore. I’ve lived this whole life as Xue Ranran, and I’m perfectly fine with that. Why should I care who I used to be?”

Su Yu hadn’t expected her to shut down the topic so decisively.

---------------

Sure, it's all because of the spirit spring that the ML keeps kissing Ranran XP

But with things as they were now, Su Yishui's temperament was inevitably affected by the spirit spring. It was like sharing a cage with a vicious tiger—he had to remain constantly alert.

Either learn to coexist with the beast… or be devoured by it.

The hue of red in his eyes reflected exactly that—how strong or weak the demonic influence was within him. When he kissed her just moments ago, those eyes had flared scarlet again. Clearly, the corruption surged, slipping his control.

And once Ranran understood all this, she could no longer blame her master for being impulsive. The spirit spring wasn’t just some cursed relic—it turned out to be a lust-crazed pervert as well!

It kept dragging her master out of control, making him do all these wildly inappropriate things!
