"How to Thrive in a Throuple" is an insightful guide by Alana Underwood, Kevin Jankay, and Megan Smith, exploring the complexities and rewards of throuple relationships. Drawing from personal experiences, the authors offer practical advice on communication, trust, boundaries, and personal development. The book addresses common fears and misconceptions, providing realistic insights into maintaining a healthy and fulfilling throuple. It serves as a roadmap for those exploring or currently in a throuple, helping to build authentic and meaningful connections.
*3.5 stars rounded down* I’ve been following @campthrouple for a while because I enjoy their determination to normalize their non-traditional throuple relationship. While this book is quite informative, it’s not groundbreaking. I assumed there would be many more personal stories, examples, and conflict resolution from their relationship outlined in book form to assist new throuples along their journey.
Instead, it was pretty generic, though still informative. It moreso laid out the importance of boundaries and regular communication rather than providing examples of their personal boundaries or how to have uncomfortable conversation. And I get it — every relationship is nuanced and no two relationships look alike. But I was still hoping for more of a “we really struggled here and this is exactly how we all got over that hurdle” rather than “finding balance amongst all partners is crucial” …because duhhh.
Not a book I'd have picked up without a nudge, but I follow Alana, Megan, and Kevin on Instagram (@campthrouple) and I've been so impressed with their creative reels and the overall positivity they bring to the platform. That same creativity and positive energy also comes through their new, short, book, which offers more about introspection and healthy relationship practices than anything specific to polyamory. Feeling stuck in your traditional relationship? Give this a read.
Overall, concise well written and includes activities with concrete application. Would have appreciated a little bit more expounding on topics within chapters, and the inclusion of detailed reference citations supporting their recommendations with current literature in sociology and psychology. Very much appreciated the inclusion of personal experiences and anecdotes, giving insight into the dynamic.
