Omg communication and truth FINALLY at about 70% in and I was so happy! Until that ending…enough of Piper the martyr fer chrissakes. So frustrating! I don’t feel sorry for her anymore and I honestly don’t even like her. The back and forth with Kicks is so old at this point. Very disappointed ☹️
Edited to add that I will say the covers in this series are stunning!

“Haunted” picks up where Book 2 abruptly ended, with Piper (and her little brother Charlie) driven out of Groza’s pack and starting a new life as Kick’s mate. Three themes cast an oppressive shadow over this new arrangement: Groza’s hatred of Piper is far-reaching, Piper’s newly acquired deadly abilities have both friends and foes wary of her presence, and Piper is fearful of anyone discovering her relationship with Death Herself.

Donna Augustine expertly creates a unique romantic tension between Piper and Kicks that blends lust, longing, and idealism into an explosive package that feels constantly on the verge of shattering. This frenetic energy had me quivering with emotions from hope to angst, curiosity to dread, unable to put yet another of this author’s books down until the last page was turned.

Piper and Kicks have a natural chemistry that didn’t exist with her previous love interest. Kicks always has her back. Always. He’s big, sexy, and completely devoted to Piper. She’s selfless and resilient in a way that is unexpected for her age, to an extent that has me wanting Piper to let her guard down and let the others help her.

Where opposites attract, Kicks is definitely the glass-half-full kind of guy. Everything will work out fine in his indefatigably positive Alpha worldview. And if it doesn’t, he’ll smash it until it is so. At every turn, Piper is the glass-half-empty girl. Nothing is fine. No one will believe her. Everyone does or will hate her. She’ll have to run away, again. And above all, don’t tell Kicks the truth.

Yeah, there were times I was mad at Piper. But I was mad at Groza, Duncan, Death, and a bunch of others as well. It’s an emotional read. The positive-negative dynamic between Kicks and Piper was prolonged and I really needed some relief. I’ll admit that I didn’t expect to be left hanging once again, but it’s true. “Haunted” is not the end of Piper and Kicks story. It better not be. I’m not settling for an amicable compromise when I want a full-on consummated mating with unfettered passion. If these two can’t get it together I’m crawling into the next book and slapping them myself.

Love and thanks to Donna Augustine for including me on this amazing journey.

Hmmm

Not sure if I liked this book much. The book felt … long and I’m not sure what happened. Some aspects remind me of the wilds series- but I guess all post apocalyptic books have some similar elements. There were points when I expected other characters to come into play just because once again, traveling by motorcycle between settlements. But besides that … the book kind of dragged for me. Mostly because I wanted more between Piper and Kicks. They don’t seem as … real to me as other couples Augustine has written. Other problems:

One- the whole thing with Death is still to be played out. At first she seemed good, then bad, then… I don’t know.

Two- the way Piper is changing is hard to read. I don’t know how much I like her.. at all. When she was trying to save Charlie and survive in book one, I liked her: book two and her wishy washy stuff with Duncan was pitiable and understandable but not likable. I thought for sure a stronger Piper would emerge in this book but maybe next book. Right now she shoves Kicks away constantly and her inner voice isn’t fun to ride along with at all. She just reacts to things.

Three yeah kicks and Piper are a problem for me. He’s forced into a reactive position too and there were no moments of genuine connection between them. Either she’s jealous over his past partners, or she’s pushing him away. On the road away from the suspicious packs, I thought maybe there was a chance for them to be real but it isn’t, I really wonder why he won’t just walk away too, at this point. He can’t help her and she doesn’t need him.

I was so excited to continue this series but this 3rd book was a whole lot of filler before any actual plot happened
Piper was annoying as hell the entire time, so whiny and victimizing herself. Stubborn too.

Kicks is a cool character that absolutely shouldn’t like piper! How she treated him was rough. It could have been a nice relationship building book, but none of that happened until the end.

The substance was minimal and subpar. We still have no idea why or how piper can contact death. There was a brief mention and moment of other creatures, but minimal world building.

This could have been a nice 3rd book, it had the set up but was vastly underplayed. Ugh

DNF.
I'm getting so tired of these miscommunication/ashamed of my power tropes. They're overdone, and they're boring.
This could've been a really interesting story, but the FMC is so irritating I'm done.
Also, when the MMC has the option of a stunning, well put together and talented Alpha, or a dopey irritating nothing...I struggle.

I generally plow through Donna Augustine's books and have a hard time putting them down and though I had moments of that with this one, there were several times I felt like this third book of this series was dragging, so it was easy for me to take breaks. I think my mood contributed too, as it often does with my reading lately, unfortunately.

There were several moments/scenes that I really loved like I often do from this author, but as a whole there seemed to be something missing or maybe I'm just eager for Piper to get out of the situation she has been in and to stop pushing the hero away. One of my favorite elements of DA's books is the slow burn romance that typically features the heroine fighting/thinking the H doesn't care for her, while the readers can tell the H loves the h above all else, but it didn't hit the same in this one for some reason, and I found myself more frustrated with the heroine than I have in the past. Just when I thought there was some movement we hit a brick wall again, so I am looking forward to the resolution (hopefully) in the next book.

DNF... The first book was good, the second was okay, but this last one I just couldn't get into. I just couldn't get into the kicks relationship, probably because i was already invested in Duncan. I don't like how the chemistry with him was just dropped suddenly, and he was made out to be a bad guy while she starts over with kicks. I didn't make sense to me. I skipped ahead hoping things would be explained and/or come back around, but it didn't seem to be the case. Maybe if i had read the whole thing i would understand, but i just can't do it.

I like the plot
I like the world-building
I like the supporting characters
I even like the MMC
... I can't stand the FMC... she takes the lack of communication to another level, it's exhausting to be in her square head, sometimes it's even hard to empathize with her. I empathize with the MMC for having to put up with her.

I devoured all three published books in this series in under 24 hours, so it's definitely entertaining. However, this third book left me frustrated, mostly because of Piper's behavior.

Her constant accusations that Kicks is sleeping around—and her need to know every detail about who he's been with—are relentless. Piper comes across as someone completely unhinged with all of her tirades. It's especially annoying since Kicks is actively pursuing her and she keeps shutting him down. Generally, any time they make progress in their relationship, it's like they're taking one step forward and two steps back. It's obvious things aren't going anywhere with them in a timely fashion. (Spoiler: Kicks finally got to second base for like, one second, but that's as far as things progress in the bedroom).

On the other hand, after learning more about Kicks and his past in this book, a part of me wonders if there's anything worth pursuing in the first place. (Spoiler: It's already been implied he desires Piper because she's a guide, but this book reveals another possible motive: humans cannot usually bear shifter children, and his previous mate died due to pregnancy complications amplified by the fact she was carrying an alpha's child.) Basically, Piper is a safe bet for him AND he gets the added perk of her being a guide with special abilities, aka, an asset to his pack. How romantic.

But even these "abilities" feel pointless—Piper’s supposed role as a guide seems more about killing people than actually helping anyone, and now she's bound to do Death’s bidding, even though it’s unclear why Death would physically need her for anything in the first place. Her purpose feels murky at best. She’s essentially Death’s puppet, with the occasional ghost chat thrown in. I'm genuinely confused about Piper's role in all of this, and her value, in general, to the shifter community.

Don't even get me started on the ending. Big spoilers ahead: Those who are bummed out that Duncan is no longer the guy for Piper are going to be REALLY upset when they get to the end of this book. Sigh. It's really hard to reconcile this new Duncan with the Duncan from the first book. The mighty have truly fallen and I, for one, hate to see it. His story deserved something more. I would have loved to see a redemption arc, but even if he was always doomed to die, his death deserved more eloquence than Death just knocking him over like a pawn on a chessboard while the rest of the story continues. But I cannot say I'm surprised. After all, the author's writing style is consistent when it comes to summarizing events and skipping over things.

Then there's Piper's admission to herself that she loves Kicks. And I can get behind it. After all, they've been through some stuff together, he stood by her side through the highs lows and even lowers, and he's a mega hottie. However, when he’s on the brink of death, and she feels deep remorse for the way she has treated him—along with regret for not expressing her true feelings—you would expect to see some changes in her behavior. I'm thinking to myself: Finally! This is the catalyst we need! But it seems that is not the case because when Kicks makes his miraculous recovery, she pushes him away more than ever.

This story ends by establishing an even larger emotional barrier between the two of them, where Piper acknowledges she's not the girl for him due to the deal she's made with Death. This sets up the next sequel for what I can only imagine is going to be a lot of Piper cold-shouldering Kicks while continuing to descend further into this new 'dark side' thing she's got going on.

Awesome book

I am really enjoying reading/listening to this series! The plot is definitely taking twists that I did not see coming and it is very engaging and making me not want to put the book down at all. I love the characters, I am enjoying the way the story is being told and unfolding, and I think the narrator is doing an excellent job. I don't really write reviews that giveaway spoilers so I guess if you have read the books already you'll know what I mean but, I was very satisfied with one of the scenes in the book, I'm truly hoping for an HEA, I really love many of the characters, and I'm so happy that I found this series. I am going to start the final book in a few minutes. I am very very glad that I ran across this series after all four books were available because waiting to find out what happened next probably would have been torture! I think this is an excellent series and everybody should either read it or listen to it on an audiobook. Happy reading!

Got bored: it was mostly miss, very little hit

I thought this would right up my alley, but I'm not liking this as much as some of her other series, even though the MCs were less juvenile than some of her others. I felt like the FMC's romances were just a vehicle to extend the story and manipulate the reader, they made no sense: she was unaccountably obsessed with Duncan with no real basis for it, then resistant to Kicks even though his actions were perfect? It's going on way too long and I don't have the energy for the next one, the relationship with death and the martyrdom is boring while the relationship with the MMC is neglected but could have been interesting. Kicks was one of her better MMCs yet it still wasn't gelling for me. I do have lots going on ATM, so it could be me in part..

Haunted by the Shadow of Death

So much growth by Piper but she’s still so full of fear. Her hesitancy where Kicks is concerned is so frustrating, but still, understandable. Not wanting Death to partake in what they have together makes her reticence bearable.
If you like slow burn romance. This is about as slow burn as it gets.
Kicks started out as someone I didn’t trust when he showed up in book 2, but he sure has proven himself to be quite amazing. So much better than Duncan in his actions and strength.
I do not have one bit of sympathy for Duncan and his begging at the end. He and Groza deserve what they got.
Piper is becoming a force to be reckoned with. I love that she ends up owning who she is and what she can do while still being fiercely loyal.
Can’t say enough about how good this series is. I’m devouring each book just to see what will happen next.

It was good series i liked the way that the author tricked us with the first MMC and made us think they were endgame, the second choice was obviously so much better.
What i liked:
Little funny and smart kid
Kinda of a found family plot although half of the family kinda of didn’t made it
Sarcastic MMC
Plot twist
What I didn’t liked
It took her a long time to accept that she was a tool of death for the good
The relationship between the MMC and would be basically his son is not as strong as the relationship between the first MMC and the kid
Tge romance wasn’t that good and neither was the action honestly, almost everything that she did was unintentional until the very end when she finally accepted her fate
Anyway good read overall especially the first book

as the story continues, I want to know what Death has in store for Piper. Groza had a hand in Death Day and I want to know more as to how. Piper has changed, and not gonna lie, I like this hardened version of her. Kicks is hanging on, and there's another secret he still hasn't given up.

as far as the writing goes in this series, it's very simplistic. had the author spent more time flushing out the story, putting a little more building structure, and made the characters more 3D, I could very easily see this series as a 4.5-5 star. I love the idea, it just needs a little more oomf.

things I highlighted while reading:

“You are the only person I want, and if you think I’m going to give up, you don’t know me.”

Beyond Brilliant!

After Jaysa’s startling revelation and the events that followed Piper’s choices dwindled down to only one. So they left Duncan and Groza’s pack and travelled to Kicks’ pack in Arkansas.
It wasn’t going to be the happily ever after that Kick wanted, Piper knew that. What she didn’t know was how difficult things were going to get, because Death is angry at those responsible for Death Day.

This is an absolutely stunning read. Death is a complicated subject at the best of times, the author has handled this beautifully. It’s raw and heartbreaking at times. Well worth reading.

Fantastic read !!!!

Whoa !!! Just when I think I knew where this was headed !!!!
So, in this book , Piper has to make some tough decisions. About Kicks, about Charlie and her pack.About herself and what's going on .
Piper is a sort of human , now turned guide, who is also a little more. More what , you ask ??? Well, that's what she's trying to find out. As we find out more about death day , and why it happened, we find out more about what is in the future for Piper and her loved ones .
I thought I knew where this was all headed.
I didn't !!!! Just along for the ride !!! Can't wait for the next !!!!

Just wow!

This book has so much angst and wanting that you just wanted poor Piper to get out of her own way sometimes. I love Kicks and the way he has her back and wants to right all the wrongs that are bringing her down. Between the deaths and whispers from Groza's pack that followed Piper to her new home our poor heroine has her work cut out for her. There is a dark destiny that requires a hard choice and we can only hope that in the end Piper still has enough of herself left. Love this series and highly recommend.

Absolutely soul-gripping!
In this 3rd book Piper shows more resilience than ever with everything that happens to her, protecting sweet Charlie and Kicks shows that he's her rock ,always on her side. But her path only gets harder....no spoilers but she has death on her back! Well written with detailed and complex plot and storyline, fluid and intense narrative and multilayered characters that kept me engrossed in the story until the last word!
Highly recomend this series!

Series hooked me in

I really liked the 1&2 books in this series, read them so quickly. Didn't love the changes with Duncan, but it wasn't unbelievable and I think it resolved well. Kicks was a pleasant surprise tbh, but I am so frustrated with the main character's inability to get over herself about him. I was really hoping for something there at the end but Piper is the only one not trying. Hopefully the 4th book ties up these loose ends and she pulls her head out her butt.

I did not see that coming!

There are times while I was reading this that I just wanted to reach out and touch Piper. Kicks bends over backwards to help her in any way he can but she just keeps pushing him away.
As for Duncan and Gross-a? I knew she was an evil witch that somehow turned him against Piper but I was totally unprepared for what happened in New Mexico.
I am so engrossed with this series! I can’t wait for the next book!!

3rd book

This series keeps getting better and better. This third installment was a doozy. Poor piper can't seem to catch a break between pack members falling dead, to having to travel for answers no one seems to have, and finally to making a deal with death. The ending of this book has her finally accepting the love she has for kicks and her fate. I'm still annoyed that she is stupidly pushing him away all the time!

Another installment in this story. I struggled to get through it . Piper is on my last nerve. I'm eager to wrap this up so on to the final book.

Things I liked.
Travel
Some answers
Kicks
She's finally going to own her power.

Things I didn't like
Piper. I really don't like her character. She's so indecisive.
Lack of communication from Piper. This lasted through almost all of the first 3 books.
There's no felt relationship growth.

This next book in the series picks up right where Book 2 abruptly ended, continuing with surprise after surprise. I absolutely love everything about this series and have been unable to put yet another of this author’s books down until the last page was turned. It doesn’t end as abruptly as the last book, but it does leave you gagging for more ….

Boring!

Really liked books one and two. This one, however left a lot to be desired. I was tired of Piper’s pity party and the sexual tension. Just give up already! About half way through, I flipped to the ending and read that. Probably won’t bother with any more of this series. Sorry.

Loved it

I can’t believe the book is out! The story continues to twist and turn but there is a lot uncovered in this book and now I am absolutely dying for book 4. I was all Team Duncan but now I am firmly Team Kicks.

Not the end!

Well, Death has her way so far! Piper loves Kicks but will not admit it and he has never told her he loves her either. I hope the next book changes those facts. I want an ending that sees them together and love between them!

Not what I expected

The book has too much angst. It was actual a frustrating read and very different to how the first book shaped her relationships. Love this author, but this series is hard to finish. Nothing like the Wilds.

A series worth reading!

Post apocalyptic, shifters, a mystery to solve. The world in upheaval as a new normal takes over and a search for belonging. This series is so good! Well done , well developed characters who fight for a new world.

Can't wait for the next book!

Great! Love the characters, the plots, the cliff hangers! Death is a real bitch but in the best way. The almost love thing is so much better then some books and the hundreds of sex acts...so much better keeping it brewing. Hot.
