The Serpenree have been at war with the Lupinari for what seems like forever.

Prisoners work under horrible conditions, forced to bend to the Serpenree’s will. The Phoenix, supposed creator over all of Orythia, is silent to their ears.

There, on the Serpenree planet of Lacertilia, Rina is a halfling where halflings are hated most. Her closest thing to a friend is a Serpenree guard who hardly shares her feelings.

When an unexpected opportunity shows itself, will she take it? What will become of her secret, which she believes no one, including herself, holds?

Old rivalries rise to the surface. Each of the planets has their own story to tell.

Will the Phoenix remain silent?

I'm Ava, a young author, Christian, homeschooler, PK, and lover of wolves who tends to reread the books I come across at least twice. I write primarily fantasy and science fiction and have been writing as long as I can remember.

That writing became something more than a hobby when I realized the struggle of trying to find truly good stories among the rest. Since then, I've written multiple stories, helped edit multiple works from budding writers, and worked to improve my writing and create stories that someone might just want to read about.

I live in a small town in Illinois with my parents and little (but only slightly younger) brother, where the sunsets are vibrant and the wind is harsh. When I'm not writing, I enjoy reading, playing my guitar, dreaming up new worlds, helping out at my church, and being with friends and family.

Short Review: Healer is fast-paced, with a story willing to address the serious, and show characters with unique personalities. This book never gets heavy content-wise, but does sensitively brush topics such as coming to faith, war and imprisonment, discrimination, and forgiveness. Blood and injuries are shown when relevant, but are never gratuitous or overly detailed. Overall, it was a clean, quick read that I enjoyed. I look forward to the sequel.

Long Review: I probably went overboard with the spoiler tags, but if you click them, read at your own risk.

Pacing: Not much to say, everything was fast-paced while still allowing for character interactions. My only major complaint is that there are a few scenes with a repetitive pattern: . Thankfully, it doesn't make up too much of the book. I was still hooked, and managed to read it quickly. I look forward to seeing more of the world in the sequel, though.

The Characters: Dune became one of my favorites due to his humor and charm, as well as his . Rina's willingness to grapple with heavy subjects such as faith (and lack thereof), her trauma, forgiveness, and discrimination makes her an interesting character to follow. She's not wishy-washy in her beliefs, but she's also willing to introspect and ask serious questions. Her serious questions are presented without causing tonal whiplash or distracting from the main plot, which I liked. I wish I got to see more of Sorren's personality, but that's alright. There are plenty of side characters I grew to admire, especially Rose and Obi.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read with a good story. The ending seemed to indicate a sequel, which I hope to read. This book seems to be recently published, so it may be some time until then.
