Natalie watched him for four years behind shy lashes. He was everything she dreamed of a man to be; strong, handsome, and someone who wasn't afraid of hard labor. She was not his typical girl. She wasn't shy but around him her voice evaded her and she only wanted to be noticed yet everything kept backfiring.
A pleasant surprise? Well not to the reader imho... but that's what Wyatt's reaction felt like. Not the reaction I'd like in an H. Luke warm at best.
Natalie has been forgotten and taken for granted by everyone but her sister, her whole life. She becomes friends with Logan but his older brother, Wyatt never seems to notice her. So she 's a bit of a mary-sue doormat I'm sorry to say. Each time she has an opportunity to find some gumption, she gets tongue-tied around his sexy muscles... straight through till the end of the book.
Wyatt is the serious responsible brother and he notices everything but never lets others know what he is thinking. He knows that Natalie is attracted to him but has never given her reason to think he is interested in any way. Near the start of the book, Logan, his brother who is friends with Nat, corrects him on her real age when he seems to think she is still in high school. The story is a string of little moments like that, where Wyatt learns something new about Nat but shows no reaction. So the reader is left much in the dark as to what he thinks. And if we're in the dark, imagine how Natalie feels???
There's a bit of suspense towards the end when Nat's sister Jen (who had come home from college) disappears for two days. Was it the creepy guy who tortured cats when he was a kid???
Unfortunately, by the end I was unconvinced that Wyatt felt the same for her that she did for him. He just didn't talk to her, or tell her his feelings AT ALL. If the h has been pining for a guy for years, I want the fool to fall hard when he falls. I want him to make a bit of a fool of himself as recompense for taking the h for granted for so long. I want the whole damn town to see them together and feel envious of their love. What I don't want is So while I like an H that is reserved or stoic or stuffy, I need him to make the EFFORT at the end to show he cares. Not because he's expected to, or because he's being polite, but because he can't frickn' go one more day without her. Is that too much to ask???
There’s just something about Ms. Wards’ work that keeps drawing you back, like a moth to a flame! I can’t help but love all the sweet and romantic stories Ms. Wards writes. A Pleasant Surprise was definitely one of my top favourites and I enjoyed it to the very last word!
My Official Summary:
For four long years, Natalie has had a major crush on Wyatt! He was everything she had dreamed and wanted of a man. Strong, sexy as hell, and someone who wasn't afraid of hard labor. The problem? She was not his typical girl. Natalie wasn't a shy girl but for some God forsaken reason, around him she always seemed to loose her voice and all rationale thoughts evaded her! The plan? That’s simple....to get noticed by him! But what’s a girl to do when everything she is trying to work for keeps backfiring and hitting her right in the face?!
Review Continued....
Natalie is your typical sweet, innocent and beyond naive woman usually mentioned in Ms. Wards’ stories. However, what I liked about this particular character was the backbone, Natalie has. She goes through so much in this story, from her negative self-image opinions, to her family’s lack of attention and treating her like shit, to all the insecurities she has about love, life and sex....some how she always manages to hold her head high and just carry on! While reading this, my reaction was literally like, “Wow, she just doesn’t give up!” And no kidding when I say this, Natalie was a very powerful character! I loved her!
As for Wyatt...well...HE IS SOME HOT PIECE OF EYE CANDY!! Yeeshhh....a hot, sexy, scorching cowboy who is protective and just a little but possessive....WHAT THE HELL IS NOT TO LOVE??!!! I just love male characters like this! The only thing I would say pissed me off was Wyatt’s continuous, “I can’t be with her because of all this other shit in my life!” Are you kidding me?! Give me a freakin break...its so obvious you love her, she loves you...GET ON WITH IT ALREADY! *shakes head* But then again, I guess it’s this kind of drama that makes these romantic stories so....romantic! LOL ;p Also, throughout all of this, the way Wyatt and Natalie’s relationship develops was very cute and very heart clenching! :D
All in all, this was an absolute treat to read! Ever since I read The Billionaire’s Secret Desire, I have been madly in love with Ms. Wards work! A Pleasant Surprise was definitely one of those books that made me smile, laugh, scream in frustration and even get a little teary eyed! I just simply loved it! I absolutely recommend this book for all cute romance readers out there! You’ll love it! =)
Really liked it, so sweet! These quick and heartfelt stories appeal to me like nothing else, it's really weird actually, but they feel good, so I read them! We have what is to be expected, manly man finally notices innocent, shy girl who has been lusting after him forever. He knows he is no good for her, but can't help himself, and then feels bad that he isn't good enough and can't commit to her. She of course has no idea what is going on and assumes she is just too icky for him and simply accepts that fact. In this case, he waits for her to realize she wants him and to come after him, which was a nice change!
Good read, very sweet down home love story. Natalie very shy, hidden behind her frumpy clothes and awkwardness. Secretly loves Wyatt totally sexy hot cowboy. They both learn lessons along the way and of course a happy ever after. Nicely done. Sex scene typical to this sweet story. Love a good ending.
