Happy Jack and the Wolves of New London: Shadows Over Earth-That-Was: Vol. 2

Rate this book
It all started as a milk a working vacation on New Arcadia, the neo-Victorian and Edwardian steampunk orbital, with cards and booze and filthy jokes aplenty. Then it became a bigger - but still low-stakes - job involving stolen Egyptian artifacts with a payday almost too good to be true. How it ended up, though, might have involved going to war with a bloodthirsty outlaw gang of neo-Nazi, neo-pagan, cybernetic, steampunk biker werewolves and trying to prevent the Viking apocalypse. Maybe with the help of half-alien Jesus, an ancient cat goddess, and a small army of berserker dwarves. Depending on who you talk to and whether or not the rumors are true. And whether or not you have any actual evidence to back up those ludicrous and spurious claims which the allegedly involved parties vehemently deny. Furthermore, said parties - who hold tight to their claim of being "simple, well-armed tourists" - had some choice words to say about your mother's sexual proclivities and the alleged marital status of your parents at the time of your birth, but we will not list those here for decorum's sake. Ahem.

Daniel Davidson, pop culture archaeologist and part-time mercenary of dubious repute, is back with all of his beloved, foul-mouthed, thoroughly dangerous, and absolutely hilarious orbital-hopping friends and colleagues in this filthy, uproarious, unhinged, and oddly wholesome sequel to Happy Jack and the Scary-Ass Book of Doom. Expect more bullets, more blades, more booze, more "your mom" jokes, approximately 800% more uses of the word "ignominious," and maybe even a giant, angry wolf god.

Sometimes the real treasure is the friends you make along the way. And the trail of dead werewolves you leave in your wake. Who absolutely had it coming. Allegedly.

About the author

Rich Partain

Rich Partain writes absolutely ridiculous comedy sci-fi adventure stories. He doesn't have any major awards or accolades just yet as he is very new at writing fiction. He graduated with a B.A. in English from the University of Montevallo too many years ago to discuss here, and he has been a writer in one form or another for most of his life: from school newspapers and yearbooks to jobs as a reporter and editor of daily and monthly newspapers, to writing for the web and authoring Federal grants. He practically grew up in libraries and bookstores.

Rich has held a host of jobs that inform his written work, including positions in security, law enforcement, information technology, web and graphic design, and tons of other jobs that resulted in burns, bruises, cuts, scrapes, broken bones, and meeting a plethora of colorful characters over the course of his lifetime. Currently, Rich is a full-time multimedia developer as well as a part-time novelist and musician.

His first novel, Happy Jack and the Scary-Ass Book of Doom, is intended to be an antidote to dark, angry fiction where horrible people do horrible things to each other. There are moments of darkness, however, because what would an adventure story be without obstacles and antagonists? At their heart, though, Rich's stories are tales of staunch, good-hearted friends striving against impossible odds to save the universe and innocents from death and destruction. Badass mercenary friends with foul mouths, yes, but wholesome for all that. Once you get past the profanity, innuendo and occasional bloodshed and violence.

Rich lives in Madison, AL, with his beloved, long-suffering, ultra-supportive wife, two unruly but good-hearted boys, and a sweet but needy dog. He is hard at work on the sequel(s) to Happy Jack ... when life allows.

Indiana Jones meets Deadpool, only with orcs and elves and sh*t… but with guns, and they are in floating cities for some stupid reason.

Another great story from Partain. His universe is well crafted, endearing, challenging, and hilarious. I honestly laughed, gasped, sighed, and yes... enjoyed... this more than any other book I've read in a long time. As did your mother...enjoyed it, I mean... that's what she said, anyway.

Another highly enjoyable story. Same zaniness and another "rollicking romp," same crew, but expanded! More goofiness! Higher level bosses! Another visit with Josh! More about Helly! More about Daniel! More escapism!!

Yes, all these exclamations are on purpose AND being used correctly! (ok, except that one, maybe)

Yes, there are some ... ... sad, unhappy, or mean things, as there was in book one. However, the bad things are there for reasons, not to pointlessly make the reader sad/unhappy/triggered.

In the acknowledgement at the end, the author said that if we keep reading the stories, Rich'll keep writing them, so I say to you, go read them and feel yourself (hopefully) unclench a little. Laughter really is something that can help keep me sane, so I'm going to keep reading. You do you.
