David Roper knows that church leaders, especially in small congregations, can become disillusioned, exhausted, and overwhelmed by a sense of futility. Encourage your leaders with the gift of Roper's biblically based devotional messages that offer guidance, comfort, and support.
A Burden Shared is a wonderful devotional book for pastors and leaders in the church. I bet it’s great for folks who aren’t leaders in the church too. What sets this book apart is the weaving of many of the traditional voices in Christianity and friends of the author. It isn’t just a book of pieces of people like George Macdonald, John Wesley, or John Calvin, but also from the author’s love of fly fishing and being in the mountains. It’s also a good reasource for those who are in their latter years of ministry. As someone just starting out, I found the book to be accessible. There are several quotable lines in the book: “Real Christianity means giving ourselves to everyday, low-profile obedience – an activity for which we get the least encouragement from our hustling peers (78).” Frederick Buechner marvels at what he calls the “folly of God to choose for hisholy work in the world…former lamebrains and misfits and nit-pickers and stuffed shirts and odd ducks and milquetoasts” (62). As one of the early church Fathers said, “If you happen to live in a community do not move to another place, for it will harm you greatly. If a bird leaves her eggs they will never hatch” (103). As someone has said, “Our predominant thoughts determine our inevitable actions. What we think in our hearts is what we eventually do” (105).
A great devotional for spiritual leaders. I would highly encourage reading only one "chapter" a day. Should be a very encouraging, uplifting, yet challenging ~50 days. The first chapter alone was a great encouragement.
