Meanwhile, a challenger appears to contest Katarina’s protracted engagement to Prince Jeord! What’s more, this rival turns out to be someone Katarina knows very well...
Normally this series has one main thing going for it. it's quirky. Katarina with her block headed doofiness surprises people with her silly positive attitude and draws them in to her circle of simps. that's literally the concept of this series.
However this volume was DULL. None of the normal heart or charm was present and it felt like the author forgot how to write the MC. Suddenly she was more capable and picked up on things easier seemingly out of nowhere.
There was none of the usual whimsy and fun that this series usually carries with it. instead get ready for the wonderful world offff MEDIEVAL POLITICS! YAYYYYY!!! oh b0y...my favorite.
The first 1/3 of this volume is telling backstories of people who work with katarina at the magical ministry. the other 2/3 is about her and her friends dealing with a minor character's sad life situation and her abusive father where they feel bad and realize they have to get her out of the guy's mansion.
I swear 100 pages of this volume is just them talking back and forth about this evil guy's family and how he's mean to his daughter. back and forth back and forth. and then, when you finally feel like there's going to be a fun climax with a mission impossible style break in....it's dealt with in like 10 pages with a "well that was easy".
there were no stakes in this volume other than "Will Fray be okay?" and i'm like "bro i don't CARE if fray will be okay. she's like.. some random ass background character who was important in one short side story with Nicol and had 2 lines in another volume." i actually FORGOT who this character was when they re-brought her up. i was like "who? ohhhh right THAT girl".
The biggest thing i can say about this volume was that it felt like the soul was sucked out. characters kind of walked around with the...same general vibe of previous volumes but it just felt..listless. like the author was going through the motions. Katarina was WAY too on point and far less ditzy in this one and it just felt WAY off.
I couldn't get through this volume fast enough and kept checking the percentage count. and you know that's a bad sign.
Honestly it feels like the author is running out of ideas and they need to wrap it up soon. There's really not much more that can be told with this story. it's run its course and needs to wrap in a satisfying conclusion (and yes Jeord still sucks). the longer we go the less charm it keeps. there's bright spots here and there like in volume 11, but 12 is really starting to show series fatigue.
I'm going to read 13 to see if this is just a one off or if the series really is going down this rabbit hole of inadequacy. the word i'd use is disappointed.
I am kinda sad it took me 3 days to finish this book when 2 should have been enough. Anyway I have been looking forward to this book because it involves Geordo and Katarina romance, Suzanna takes a more active role here and we get the old harem back together again. Ever since Katarina joined the ministry, it’s mostly Maria who spends time with Katarina with everyone else appearing at the end of the book I wonder if the person Larna looks up to is also a reincarnated person from Katarina’s past. Perhaps one of her brothers? He might even be the same person Sora was trying to save. But then Katarina used the suffix -chan while she was sleeping, which is usually used for girls, and she referred to the person as her best friend. But it can’t be Acchan since Acchan is Sophia reincarnated

At long last, we read about Katarina's continued time at the Magical Ministry, her department colleagues, and even her younger colleagues that are still at the Academy. Sora remains my favorite! He's the definition and embodiment of home and I ship him and Katarina like it's not even funny! The first parts of the book contained great humor. The middle portion took on a more serious tone. Then the ending picked up that silly tone we enjoy so much. Overall, the light novel we all waited is gladly received and I'm looking forward to more mature moments with Katarina.
tbh if you've read up to this point you know what to expect. incidentally if katarina calls keith sexy one more time i will be jumping into a lake. thank you
(i honestly don't know whether to tag this as lgbtqia because on the one hand katarina is screamingly bisexual but on the other hand satoru yamaguchi seems to be operating on the rule that she will never openly notice this. very frustrating! katarina has two hands! let her wife up the protagonist!)
i always assumed she would one day figure out that Suzanna and larna are the same person, and Im glad that she did and how good she can keep secrets. marques randall gave me always bad vibes since I watched the anime, so I'm glad I had a good gut feeling on him. I feel so bad for Suzanne and Fray for being treated like this.

We get more table setting for the new normal with a sequel coming out in the real world, and really, I continue to be surprised that this just hasn't turned into a poly harem with Katrina at it's head. Stupid compulsory heterosexuality.
I hate to say it as I used to adore this series, but this one is sadly a more dull installment. Revolving around some side characters and some ‘political drama,’ it feels to me very lacking in its original charm and just a bit of a slog.
Really just pushing through because I see my beloved Cezar on the cover of the next volume LOL, ofc I’ll still be reading this till the end.
