Gamon Sakurai is a Japanese comic book artist from Tokyo. Born in 1986, Sakurai was selected for the Afternoon Magazine Four Seasons Award for New Comic Artists. Upon being selected for the award his short story was published and he was selected for editorial review by manga publishing giant Kodansha. Sakurai would make his publishing debut with indie publisher Issuisha in 2010, releasing a short story anthology. He would then work with Kodansha to work on his first feature length series AJIN: Demi-human in 2012.
An excellent continuation of the series that is still finding new ways to be creative with the abilities established in the Ajin universe. Volume 3 continues building the tension and the threat of Sato, and has some great action set pieces. This volume is also the point that the anime adaption diverted off into original territory, so this was full of new content to me and I felt really impressed with the propulsive flow of the events that unfold. A really great step-up in a series I was already really enjoying.
Smart protagonists, smart antagonists, unique personalities, interesting interpersonal dynamics and bonds forged between characters done in a believable way despite the circumstances of the world. And yes, one hell of a badass antagonist. Absolute legend. When an author doesn't tell you someone is amazing, but shows you instead, you're in for an incredible time. I'm absolutely loving this series right now and absolutely want to read more.
