In this best-selling, heartwarming tale, a lonely older man takes home a pet-shop kitten that no one else wants. It doesn’t take long for the pair to warm up to each other, and soon, they’re inseparable. Told through the eyes of both the man and his cat, this sweet and hilarious story is a balm for the soul!
Marin comes back to Kanda's house for a visit, but what's this? She's plumper than ever! Everyone will have to work together to get her back in shape. For Moriyama, time is almost up to find two more band members before the group gets disbanded. But stress also runs high for Kanda, while Fukumaru promises to stay by his side and help his anxiety.
The story marches on with Moriyama still wrangling people into his band like he's auditioning eccentrics for a particularly sentimental circus, and Kanda gingerly peeling back the layers of stage fright that grief left behind.
There are undeniably delightful nuggets here: Kobayashi’s unexpected “gift” to his wife is a hoot, Marin makes her "grand" reappearance, and the band's chaotic first meeting feels like herding cats with electric guitars (Hoshinari’s eye-rolling faces!). But still, some characters seem to have slipped quietly into the background. And the final band member’s recruitment felt rushed, like someone skipped the buildup and jumped straight to the credits.
It does feel like the story is squinting toward its end. Kanda is finally doing more than just staring wistfully at pianos, based on the preview of the next volume. He’s taking real steps to face the music, quite literally. Whether it ends in triumph or a quiet fizzle, I’ll stick around to see where it leads.
I liked the first story with teaching the piano then I felt like we were dealing with too many of these men characters that lowkey blend in, let's go back to the silly and heartwarming relationship b/w this man and his cat!
Volume 13 felt like a return to form after the previous volume - a lot more coherent in the plot and pacing. As usual, it was heartwarming, funny, and sincere...and contained plenty of goofy cat antics.
Mixed feelings on this one. The manga is taking a different turn focusing on music and creating a band. Each volume is less and less about Fukumaru and the relationship he has with the other cats, Kanda and the other humans. Not the vibes I originally thought this manga was going for.
Am I crazy, or is this the second (or maybe third) time a young man has broken down crying in the middle of the street and been comforted by Kanda? Like, I wouldn't be mad if it was, it's just... an odd thing to happen twice.
I didn't love this edition as much as some of the others- Kanda and Fukumaru were de-emphasized too much. I don't mind all of the supporting characters, but it is definitely better when it surrounds our two main characters.
The first story is really good but slightly strange, since—except for the splash page—NONE of the cats appear! Even though Kobayashi goes over to Kanda's house where ALL THE CATS are! Yes, I get that, despite the title, it isn't ONLY "a man and his cat," but for none of the cats to even appear in the background? Odd!
(or, I guess that's actually normal for cats)
Anyway, the cover is a HUGE spoiler, emphasis on H-U-G-E! Which cat that is is *almost* a surprise, but come on!
That storyline takes up a lot of the book, dealing with the fat cat (rather unsuccessfully, as probably anyone who has managed pet obesity to THIS degree knows too well). The initial bit of the story is cute, as —at which point Geoffroy imagines it and thinks that would be cute (only to be scolded that "You just thought 'that would be cute!'").
Unfortunately, cat dieting is about as fun to read as human dieting. About the least awful part is where their owners play with them, which is the only sure way to keep the fat cat moving rather than (only) eating. I think I'd feel particularly bad if this were made into a live-action show and they used real animals. Please no, the poor thing would keel over. :(
The other interesting storyline in between some cute "shorts" is where Moriyama needs to find band members (again!), and it gets into bullying (his other members ditched) and friendship (looking desperately for new people to help on Moriyama's behalf). It feels a little forced, maybe, like trying to insert more drama into the story, but I'm not as such going to say the story is BAD for it. It just feels like a repeat or excuse to draw/re-introduce different characters.
Or, small world! Though too much of that feels like unnecessarily restricting the cast size.
Finally, the isekaidream... super cute, but I'm kind of glad it's a one-shot, because I don't know how it would've kept going.
*Almost* readable by itself, but definitely recommended for existing fans of the series!
This is great series that tells of a grieving man, Kanda, who adopts a cat. As you journey through these books you see how this cat helps Kanda reconnects with life, family, and friends. The fact the you can have a non-judgmental 'person', in this case Fukumaru the cat, be beside you all the way will help you overcome some fears.
I read so much of this series in one go and this series continues to be very sweet and really makes me yearn for a cat. However I can't ignore the elephant in the room which is that the author does not really care for her female characters and it's getting annoying as more characters get introduced and the female characters are either side characters to the male character arcs or they're dead.
Miyo gets the best Birthday gift ever, a husband who loves her! Marin eats her feelings while Geoffroy is away. Fukumaru gets Marin, her fill of food. Moriyama reunites with an old bandmate thanks to Kanda.

3.5 ⭐ I adore this series overall, but this volume was a little lackluster. Nothing bad but in comparison to the last couple, this one was a little weaker. I do like the setup to Kanda going back to the stage and I'm hoping we get to see that soon.
