Edward Aubry is a graduate of Wesleyan University, with a degree in music composition. Improbably, this preceded a career as a teacher of high school mathematics and creative writing. He now lives in rural Pennsylvania with his wife and three spectacular daughters, where he fills his non-teaching hours spinning tales of time-travel, wise-cracking pixies, and an assortment of other impossible things.

Rated 3.5 really.

Excerpt from my review - originally published at Offbeat YA.

Pros: Fun twist on a classic trope. Great guessing game. Slightly tongue-in-cheek homage to the complexity of women.
Cons: Requires huge suspension of disbelief. Depicts a fierce case of instalove...but again, with a massive twist.
WARNING! Moderate gore.
Will appeal to: Those who are in for a fun ride. Those who enjoy having the rug constantly pulled from under their feet.

First off...DISCLAIMER: I have reviewed four more books by the author so far, and I specifically requested a review copy of this one. Also, Mr. Aubry and I have exchanged a few emails, and we follow each other on Twitter. But as usual, I'm rating this book accordingly to the level of enjoyment it provided.

I'M EVERY WOMAN

Let's get it out of the way: the main female character is, indeed, what you would call a manic pixie dream girl. Except she's not. I can't explain you why, because if you enter this book without too much knowledge, you'll have a lot of fun, especially trying to figure out what's really happening. Plus, of course, watching the author play with the above trope and give it a totally new meaning. What I can say is - Caprice is a long, slightly humorous but heartfelt love letter to women, their infinite complexity and the many faces they come with. Maybe they still need a man to make their life complete in this case (though, well, not in the usual sense at all), but in a way, the male character is sort of a rescued would-be princess, which reverses the trope and makes it fresh and fun. I won this book from Librarything in exchange for an honest review.

The way I felt reading this book is somewhat similar to how the main character feels about the psychedelic adventure that Caprice takes him on throughout the book. This technique was risky, but for the most part paid off in the end, and I appreciate that Aubry took this risk. I felt very unsteady and confused for the first half of the book (and so does Danny the protagonist). Here we have a very bizarre situation of a office crush turning into a crazy beautiful kidnapper. The ride was fun and breathless and very colorful (especially the constant description of Caprice's eyes).

I thought overall the writing was strong. I did have one large issue with this book, however. I feel that this book really hinges on the connection between Caprice and Danny. Unfortunately, I did not feel like they connected on an emotional level, and I didn't feel the development of a blooming relationship between them. I thought their interactions stilted and jarring. I was continually told as the reader that Danny had this attraction to Caprice, but other than his constant comments about her everchanging eye color, I couldn't fathom what he saw in her (the fact she kidnaps him, never tells him anything about herself, and asks very personal probing questions without any reciprocation on her part). I suppose we are to assume that she is so beautiful and vulnerable that any man would want to take care of her, but I wanted more.

That said, I enjoyed the big reveal at the end, and thought that it was nicely done.

Caprice is a fast-paced, genre-blending novel that takes an intriguing premise. While it’s not a book I would normally pick up, I read it as part of a reading group and found myself pleasantly surprised by how engaging it was.

The story follows Danny Marx, an ordinary office worker whose life takes a sharp turn when the enigmatic Caprice kisses him—only for that kiss to deliver a mysterious virus that leaves him dangerously ill. Moments later, he finds himself in a hospital, only to be broken out by Caprice, who insists that both of their lives are in grave danger. What follows is a gripping adventure filled with twists, questions of trust, and the ever-present mystery of who—or what Caprice truly is.

Aubrey’s writing is smooth and accessible, making Caprice an easy read despite its layered plot. The pacing keeps the tension high, and the concept itself is refreshingly original. While the novel leans into thriller and sci-fi elements, it never feels bogged down by excessive exposition, allowing the reader to stay immersed in Danny’s confusion and urgency.

Though I hadn’t read anything by Edward Aubrey before, I appreciated his ability to craft an engaging narrative with compelling characters. While this may not have been my usual choice, I found it well-written and enjoyable, proving that sometimes stepping outside your reading comfort zone can lead to unexpected discoveries.

Would I read more from Aubrey? Possibly! But regardless, Caprice was a solid, entertaining read that delivers intrigue, action, and a touch of mystery, all wrapped up in a concept that keeps you guessing.

I really wanted to like this book, but the main character is insipid and I can't read any more books with massive instalove. I will say that the writing style is decent and if the subject matter didn't turn me off so much, I would read something else by this author.

I received this book from LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review.

[Book group] Not my sort of book, but I enjoyed it initially. Until Danny woke up in the hospital again, then it was Jodie Picot Wish you Were Here, all over again and I was disappointed.
Danny is kissed by his crush Caprice and ends up in hospital, poisoned? She kidnaps him. She is an alien? Or a cyborg.
£8 for 200 pages. Not good value. At least it wad short.

2.5 score really. It was not as awful as a 2 but as it was not really my cup of tea I couldn’t mark it as my normal 3 because it was not as engaging for me as other books I’ve marked as a 3. The writing was OK but just not my type of story.

That Girl

That girl, that girl of his dreams turns out to be more a nightmare for him or is she? A wondrous adventure that will have you wondering also.

Interesting,

I enjoyed the story pretty well. The main character of the story was a bit too weak for my taste, but I was intrigued enough by the story to continue to the end.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from the author in a giveaway in exchange for an honest, pre-release review.

Danny has been living his cubicle existence, just getting by, when the woman of his dreams walks onto his floor. He’s noticed her before, and had a crush on her, but had never had the nerve to get up and talk to her – suddenly she is there looking for him – Caprice: quirky, strange and adorable. Taking him into the stairway on an ostensible voyage to the Billing department, she instead kisses him, then runs away. By the time he gets back to his cubicle, quite confused about the whole situation, he is also terribly ill. He wakes up the next day in the hospital and finds out he has suffered from some sort of virus. Caprice shows up later and takes him out of the hospital, telling him both of their lives are in danger. Thus begins one of the strangest weeks Danny has ever experienced. Who is Caprice? Where does she come from? Which of her many stories are true? And what does she want from him?

This was a great book - I spent a bit more than the first third of it laughing. Then it got weird (in a good way), then kind of sad, then … well, I don’t want to ruin it for you. I was trying to explain it to my husband and couldn’t really figure out a good way to do so – it is sort of science fiction, sort of fantasy, sort of romance, sort of humorous … and it all blends together into a wonderfully quirky and fun whole. This book is scheduled for release on Feb. 1, 2012 – watch for it and definitely pick it up if this sounds like something you would enjoy. Recommended!

The book started out strong I was actually starting to enjoy it a little then it became redundant and a little over zealous with its mystery of who and what Caprice was/ is. It got to the point that at the 75% mark in the book I had to stop close it out and decide if I wanted to finish it or if I wanted to throw it out the window with frustration as some parts were just to drawn out. Then I stopped thought better of it and decided that as a reviewer I needed to step back take a breath and push on through to finish the book . Though it was funny and moments in the book you laughed and even got a little sad the frustration behind the book became almost to the point of stopping. Seeing as how it’s not my cup of tea however, it very well may be your’s with that having been said I will say just what I say to everyone pick it up and take a look at it see if it excites you and gets you going to read.

I won this book on Librarything.

I enjoyed Caprice. At some points, it was a little juvenile in the writing style. But it kept your interest.

Danny finds himself infatuated with the new girl at the office. When she seems to return his interest, he cant' believe it.
She kidnaps him and takes him on a wild adventure. Danny can't make up his mind what Caprice really is, but it's obvious that she's not human. She makes Danny feel every human emotion possible throughout the story (love, confusion, fear). As a reader, you find yourself believing his every assumption, then changing your mind when he does. What is Caprice and why did she really take Danny?

I won a copy of this book from Library Thing, first winning the eBook version and then buying the paperback on my own. It took me a really long time to get into it, it is a quirky, psychedelic book, but once I picked it up again I thought it was pretty good. I am normally not a fan of this genre, but decided to give it a try and I am glad that I did. The book is an adventure that the further it goes, the deeper the mystery of who Caprice is. At only 198 pages, this is a very quick read, but you need to read it slowly to digest it.

I got this book from Librarything for a honest review. I honestly stopped reading this book at first. I couldn't get into it and wad some what confused. I didn't put it down and continued reading. Im glad I did. It really turned out good. Danny I somewhat liked even if I thought he was an idiot at times. He really turns his self around near the end and started using his head. It is very nice trying to find out who or what Caprice is. It really is great trying to solve the mystery. A very nice paranormal book that keeps you guessing. Don't let the beginning fool you. It gets better as it goes.

A peculiar story with a mysterious main character and a secret that unveils only until the very end of the story—a secret that falls a bit short, at least for my taste. The story builds-up so much tension around Caprice, and the guy is so much confused whilst he is with her, that the story turns into a fast paced one. You will find yourself turning page after page willing to discover the secret.

Unfortunately, and this is my humble opinion, the final explanation falls little bit short and results a stereotype. That's the reason why I have given this story only three stars.

This marks the 3rd book by Aubry that I have read and I think "bizarre" is his specialty. All the way up to the 90% mark in kindle, I wasn't sure what to make of this book. The details kept me going, but I was as confused by the constant changing events as the main character. Then there was a final shift and I was treated to a delightful ending. Now that the ride is over, I can truly say I loved it. I only wish there had been a little bit more development for all the characters involved. Still, it is a truly enjoyable story.

From the first chapter of Caprice, I was captivated. Edward Aubry has created a novel that is quite original. This novel is full of twists and turns that keeps you on your toes and holds your attention from start to end. The characters are unique and really ignite the story in a blaze. I couldn't stop reading until I was finished. I hope that their is a sequel to this novel, for it ended too soon and at such a cliffhanger.

This book got off to a slow start. I was finding myself rather bored by it at first. I just wasn’t sure where the author was taking the story. Then it started to pick up as Danny and the reader try to figure Caprice out. It was a fun guessing game. I don’t have much to say about this book. It was a fun, quick read and one that I recommend to those who like a quirky mystery.

Entertaining enough to finish, but when you think about it, it's pretty stupid in almost every way.
