Full disclosure: This one was a DNF for me at about 42 percent. I even waited a little (reading several other books) I'm the hopes I could come back to it, but life is just too shortb to read a book that annoys me. Normally, I enjoy this author's books, but I just found myself put off by Tessa. I mean, I fully respect her caring for her parents, but the way she treats she thinks about Spencer is totally uncalled for. He's overbearing, etc., etc. But I just didn't see what she meant. He was a little irritating too (I loathe the "so much I can teach her in bed" hero), but I'm general, he's only guilty of trying to save her from a mugging and then telling her he's interested in courting her.

I toyed with skimming, but again, life's too short and I have other books in my queue. Alexa Aston is generally a good writer, and I know my opinion is in the minority. However, I did receive an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion, so here it is. Thanks!

Spencer is a second son and is largely ignored by his father and older brother. When he goes off to school, he befriends a group of other second sons and sets his path for the military. After his father dies (and his brother had died years before), Spencer is now the earl and must find a bride. Tessa has long delayed her come-out after caring for her ill mother and father. She's finally out and looking for a husband. When Spencer sees a Tessa being threatened by a knife on the street, he goes to protect her, but she's more upset by his high-handedness. Spencer is attracted to Tessa's fiery personality and pursues her. She's holding him at bay for awhile, even though she's attracted to him.

Johnny Winter, duke of Dearham, is looking for a lost cousin who he thinks is Kitty Renwick. Kitty was raised by Ben Renwick who found her as a baby. All Kitty has known is what her uncle has taught her while he ran a place called Maida Pleasure Gardens, where his sons and her worked. She meet Johnny a year earlier and was intrigued with her. When she comes in danger from her uncle's enemy they send her to the duke's house where she is known as his cousin to keep her save. i loved this book. I just reviewed Unmasking the Duke by Mary Lancaster. #UnmaskingtheDuke #NetGalley

I love a good historical romance and this has got to be my newest favorite. The mystery of who is trying to kill the female lead kept me guessing the whole book. I was completely surprised by the ending. I really thought she was his cousin the whole read, even though it was a disturbing thought. But that was a real thing back then!

Really liked the story line but there was a lot of detail in some scenes that I don’t think was necessary for character development. Spencer and Tessa’s character development was beautifully done!

Another great story by Mary Lancaster. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. The characters are perfectly created and I love how Lancaster always includes the perfect combination of passion and strife - making the characters work for their HEA and creating a great journey for the reader.
