As Elara secures alliances through her wedding, Rexton’s son, Crown Prince Anteros, interrogates their newest prisoner—and Serena’s best friend—Talitha Vise, forging an unlikely friendship that could further unravel his father.

Guided by the queen’s elite guardians, Serena must learn to wield her father’s sword if she wants to survive the barrage of aggressors in their path. But when faced with dangers untold, will the gentle girl from Durmak find the strength to fight, or will she be caught in the tyrant’s snare?

I, absolutely, loved this book! Although Serena is the main character, and much is told from her point of view, I also enjoyed how skilfully Sara Puissengur smoothly added other points of view, setting up threads which were concluded in this book, such as Cameron’s fate, but also prepared me for future ones. I enjoyed how I, as the reader, was empowered by the author as I learned Serena’s true identity, before it was revealed to Serena. The long journey to The City of Mercy was also a journey of self discovery for Serena and the toughened young woman, along with her other innate characteristics, is more prepared for the future she is being thrust towards. All the characters are well constructed and I, now, have new “friends” such as Will and the Guardians, but also enemies such as Antoine. I’m, also, eager to discover what the future holds for Talitha. I can’t wait for the next book.

“May the stars guide your journey”

Those who will like this story: fans of Demon Slayer, The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Divine Rivals series, The Odyssey

Sara Puissegur is a master of world building. She has set herself up for an entire universe of stories. This is a story for those who are fans of adventure spurred on by devastation and loss (similarly to Demon Slayer) and a story with a strong tie to jewelry (a la “The Hobbit” or “Lord of the Rings”). If you are a fan of murder in the first chapter, then this story is for you.

The language that Mrs. Puissegur created in this story is delightful. I may start saying, “BLAZING EMBERS,” at moments of shock or surprise.

The range of characters is truly delightful. There are very serious characters that have been hurt and brought to their knees by devastation. On the other end spectrum, there is an overly dramatic princess that may have no concept of priorities. Not all characters receive the opportunity for redemption and it is upsetting and refreshing.

I am very excited to see the next installment in this series.

Wow! This was an absolutely incredible read! In my opinion, the pace and character development is perfection. I had such a hard time putting it down! If you're a fan of slow-burn, found family, high fantasy, a journey filled with action and divine prophecy (among a plethora of others), this novel is for you! Sara's work is outstanding and I genuinely cannot recommend this enough-- what a debut!!! The world and epic story in the Celestial Destiny series is one that I cannot wait to see continue to develop, I'll be counting down the days to each new novel! Simply STUNNING!!!

I really enjoyed this book and the author is lovely so I would like to say thank. You for allowing me to read this ARC.

I enjoyed the multiple points of view, Serena was the main character but you got to see the story from there character perspectives too which I believe made the book have much more depth.

Serena's self discovery and growth is evident along the journey to The City of Mercy. Her and the other characters were so loveable (apart from those who were not but I don't want to spoil anything)

Found family is an important trip in this book.

I couldn't deal with my emotions at times. And I'm now desperate to read book two!

Definitely recommend if you like fantasy/romantasy books 😊📚❤️

An excellent debut novel! Loved the multiple POVs. Talitha and Anteros quickly became my favorites. I want more of them! I enjoyed Serena’s POV as well although she had me wanting to smack her at times. Unfortunately, I wasn’t as interested in Queen Elara’s story. I’m hoping the second novel has more to offer on her. Lastly, I found it a little challenging to keep up with all the characters and their dialogue. Despite this I am looking forward to book two! Great job Sara!

Serena (FMC), along with her siblings and their mom, live a quiet life at home, aside from a couple of brothers who are enlisted in the military. Early in the story, Serena experiences something truly tragic, resulting in a group of guardians coming to rescue her. During their journey to some sort of safety, Serena's brother's best friend, William, joins them. Meanwhile, one of Serena's brothers who enlisted in the military is ordered by the ruthless king to find Serena. In another POV, we're given bits of the kingdom-less Queen - politics, secrets, the fact that she's also searching for Serena, etc. One of the monarchs wants Serena dead, and one wants her protected at all costs. Which one of them will manage to catch the sparrow?

I thought the plot was quite good. I found it interesting and enjoyed the way Puissegur weaved it across multiple storylines. There are some twists and turns, and it does end on a cliffhanger. The twists and turns weren't surprising to me, but then I'm not sure if they were even intended to be shockers.

I enjoyed Puissegur writes. It reads smoothly, and the dialogue is good. I love fluid writing, and I feel that's something this author excels with.

Overall, I felt the pace was good. You get action right from the start, but then it does slow down some. It's a bit slower overall than I typically enjoy, but being the first book in a high fantasy story tends to be. There's a lot of "housekeeping" (world building, lore, magic system, etc) to be done. I would always choose a slightly slower pace for more intricate, in-depth world building over a faster pace in high fantasy.

The world building is excellent. While there's a lot to cover to properly set up a fantasy series like this, Puissegur does it succinctly without skimping on details that bring in all your senses and make the world real.

I found the characters to be strongly developed and loved the growth they show. I loved them all and loved to hate one especially. The cast is dimensional

I was more invested in the romance (?) between Talitha and Anteros than the two main characters. The MCs commented that they 'cared about one another like a sibling,' and that threw me for a loop. I'm aware the author said their romance is the slowest of slow burns, and I'm good with that (I do love a slow burn). But the siblings' comments... I'm not sure where that's going. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it, not understanding, etc.

This book is told in the third person, and I'm generally not a fan of 3rd. It does make sense for this book, and I think I'll enjoy 3rd person more as the series continues. I typically don't get as immersed in the world with third person. However, I found that getting immersed in this world wasn't as difficult due to the rich world building.

I enjoyed that we got multiple POVs. The story is mostly told in Serena's POV, and the story is further enriched by additional POVs. I feel like this was a strong choice and one the author handled really well. She times the placement to spurn the reader to read just one more chapter (we all know it's never just one more chapter 😂).

I would've loved if there was more depth during the emotional scenes. It wasn't lacking any depth, to be clear, but I wanted to feel it more deeply.

I'm not sure if it's technically labeled as high fantasy, but to me, it reads as that genre. I love high fantasy, and don't intend this to be a negative. Pointing it out because not everyone enjoys high fantasy, and if that's you, you may not love this one. If you've never read high/epic fantasy but want to start, I feel like this is a good series to start on.

It's been decades since I've read The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings, but from what I recall, A Sparrow Among Stars reads like a cross between either of those and Divine Rivals.

Thank you @authorsarapuissegur for the eARC. I'm choosing to leave this unbiased review.

A Sparrow Among Stars is the first book in the Celestial Destiny Series by Sara Puissegur, introducing readers to a rich fantasy world filled with interesting lore and political intrigue.

The story begins in a quaint village where Serena and her siblings, apart from those enlisted in the military, live a quiet life. Whilst Serena is out tragedy strikes and Serena ends up travelling with a group of Guardians to the City of Mercy - the only place where Serena may be safe as one of the monarchs wants Serena dead, and the other wants to protect her at all costs!

Worldbuilding:
Sara’s worldbuilding is exceptional, crafting an intricate fantasy realm that remains accessible and digestible to readers. She skillfully balances detailed descriptions with a clear narrative, making it easy to understand the complexities of her world without overwhelming the reader. Sara’s writing style also has a beautiful prose which is a joy to read.

Character Development:
The characters are well-developed, each with distinct personalities that complement and contrast with one another. The dynamic between Serena and the Guardians is particularly engaging, providing depth and camaraderie that enriches the narrative. Serena's journey is compelling, and the multiple POVs add layers of complexity to the story.

Pacing and Plot:
The pacing of the book is well-balanced, with action sequences carefully spread throughout the narrative. This approach allows readers to absorb the worldbuilding and delve into the characters without feeling rushed. The plot is filled with twists and reveals that keep the reader engaged, and the cliffhanger ending leaves you eagerly anticipating the next installment.

Romantic Elements:
While the romantic subplot is a slow burn, I found myself wanting more from the main romantic interests. The buildup is there, but it may take future installments for the romance to fully develop. Interestingly, I was more invested in the romantic journey of the supporting characters!

Conclusion:
Overall, A Sparrow Among Stars is a strong first installment to the Celestial Destiny Series with intricate worldbuilding, well crafted characters and a plot that will keep you hooked. If you love fantasy novels filled with unique magic systems, political intrigue, and a slow burn then this is definitely worth picking up!

⚔️ An epic fantasy told through multiple POV’s. A reluctant hero’s journey, a prophecy, sword fights, elves & dwarfs, multiple closed-door budding romances 💕 Some steamy, some sweet, some slow burn. I just adored this book so completely! My favorite two were Prince Anteros & Talitha.

The writing style of A Sparrow Among Stars is a delight, with a plot that flows seamlessly and characters that are not just sidekicks but integral to the story. I've never encountered multiple POVs in fantasy executed as masterfully as Sara Puissegur has. Serena is a compelling character, balancing her strength with her personal struggles. Her determination even in the face of grief and guilt makes her a character worth rooting for. The found family trope is beautifully portrayed in the book, with characters like Will, Crystal, Xandra, Rigel, Cole and Sabine becoming as important to the reader as the main characters.

A great debut novel! I'm excited to see what will happen next!!

This romantasy is sure to captivate a wide range of readers 💕

Sara's debut novel (book 1), A Sparrow Among Stars is the beginning of a magical must read series.

ASAS is filled with world building, detailed descriptions of the magical system/beliefs, adventure and heartache.

Overall I really enjoyed this book! It has all the elements of a great fantasy novel - amazing world building, politics/war, sword fighting, elves/dwarves, and more! I enjoyed the closed door romances - although I felt some were left underdeveloped and lacking. I feel emotionally some of the characters felt one dimensional, so would’ve enjoyed a bit more depth to some of the more “emotional” scenes. However I did enjoy the character arcs and growth throughout the story! This book gave me major LOTR vibes which is a favorite of mine, so I enjoyed the hero’s journey and found family tropes. A wonderful Romantasy debut, excited to see more from this author!

Thank you to the author for a chance to read this ARC!

I just finished A Sparrow Among Stars and wow—what a masterpiece! It’s a beautifully written story, filled with action, adventure, and mystery. The world-building is exceptional, creating an immersive setting that draws you right in.

I loved seeing how Serena developed trust with her found family—it felt so genuine. Her character development throughout the story is so commendable. The last thing she did to save one of her guardians is not an easy thing to do. The scene was so dramatic and felt real.

Now talking about Will I hate it when he calls Serena like her "Sister"..

The dynamic between Talitha and Anteros was absolutely electric; their chemistry is off the charts! I can't wait to see how their relationship unfolds in the sequel.

Last but not the least, for a debut novel, Sara did an amazing job, and I’m eagerly waiting for the next installment. I received this ARC as a part of a book tour from @plungeintobookstours , and now I’m personally requesting to be on Sara’s ARC team for the next book—I need the sequel ASAP!

I loved this book! It was a wonderful journey of discovery, survival, and adventure. I really enjoyed getting to read from several POVs as I was able to get attached to more characters other than the FMC, Serena. There are a few different storylines that are followed throughout and I was able to enjoy each one. I am looking forward to book 2!

An absolutely lovely read!!!!

Love, love, loved it!!! From start to finish, I was reeled in like a fish on a hook. A Sparrow Among Stars brought about sooo many emotions. From deep sadness to immense happiness. From anxiety (I was literally afraid to turn the pages of some chapters), to laughter and that mushy feeling you get when one of the characters you have grown to love finds love and happiness.

With lovable characters and great banter, you are sure to fall just as in love with ASAS as I did.

ASAS follows our FMC Serena and company on a perilous journey weeks after her life is turned upside down. Now, with secrets abounding, love unfolding and friendships blossoming, she not only finds strength, despite crippling fear and the most brutal of circumstances, but she is also now on the path to fulfilling her destiny. ASAS kept me up for many nights, but I would not change a thing. I am very much looking forward to reading book two and especially seeing a prophecy concerning in a certain wicked someone come to pass!!!

I highly recommend A Sparrow Among Stars to anyone looking for a cozy romantacy with the following tropes:
-Hero’s Journey
-Reluctant Hero
-Prophecy
-Chosen One
-Found Family
-Elves & Dwarfs
-Multiple Romances and POVs
-Some steamy, some sweet, some slow burn; ALL Closed Door!

This is a romantasy with multiple storylines, where we besides the FMC Serena, follow the lives of those connected to her.

It has found family, adventures, chosen one, elves, guards, courts and politics, hidden identity, along with multiple POVs.

I wanted to like this one so much, but the writing style and language in some parts of the book, made it an incredibly difficult read for me, and I had to reread some pages because of it. The multiple POVs (+5) was also not for me.

The miscommunication trope, and several obstacles in this book could have been avoided, if they had just talked. I did enjoy some parts and the overall plot of the story, but I don't think I will continue to read the next book.

Thanks to the author for the early copy.

A complex cast of characters

Sara Puissegur brings a large ensemble of characters into a fascinating story of political intrigue, self discovery, and found family. Everyone is enjoyable to read (yes, even the villain), and I'm very much looking forward to the forthcoming sequel. Very Game of Thrones-lite and perfect for younger audiences.

✨ ARC REVIEW ✨

3.75 ⭐️ 1 🌶

Thank you much Sara Puissegur for allowing me to read your book early (and I'm so sorry this review is late 🫣)

I want to start off my review by saying I really enjoyed this book; I thought Sara's writing style was not only very refreshing but also very palatable and made it easy to comprehend the whole story. While many "surprising" elements of the story were blatantly foreshadowed long before it happened, for this story, I enjoyed it much more than a random curveball being thrown at me from left field. The overall storyline was super engaging, so much so that I pulled an all nighter to finish (well, I stayed up til 5:30, but close enough)! Each POV gave me a sprinkle of everything going on throughout Durmak, and I enjoyed seeing everyone's story slowly intertwine and I look forward to seeing how they evolve in the future. I loved the action and the character dynamics and relationships with one another, and I cannot wait to see how this story evolves in book 2!

Talitha and Anteros were honestly my favorite characters and I got so excited whenever I got to their parts of the book... I truly hope they get more page time in the next book or even a novella of just them, because while I acknowledge their relationship is build on borderline Stockholm syndrome, I still ate up every single word from their portions of the book. Anteros kind of gave me Cardan (The Cruel Prince) vibes with the whole "mischievous and scheming son" & sarcastic while secretly being obsessed with someone he shouldn't be... and people thinking he's "bad" when he's a cinnamon roll/ softie at heart, and I loved it! Talitha is arguably the strongest (mentally) character in the book, and I wish we got a bit more page time from her, especially considering how this book ends her portion of the plot. I'm honestly more invested in their story than anyone else's in the book... is that a bad thing? 🫣

This book had high potential to be 4 stars for me, however, I just had one too many "problems" with the book for me to give it that. Sara wrote many enjoyable and likable characters, but some had a few moments that made me want to throw my iPad.

Below are a few criticisms I had for the book, spoiler tagged since they are spoilers:

The ending was very much “in limbo” and I’m not sure how I feel about it. It makes way for an almost too-smooth transition to the next book (no major cliffhangers but lots of unanswered questions)... these are a few things I'm hoping happens in book 2 (or tbh 3):

... just a few thoughts 😉

Overall thank you so much for giving me an eARC of your book... I thoroughly enjoyed it and had such a fun time reading! This book was such a fun and thrilling read, and I cannot wait for the release of book 2!

I was fortunate to receive an ARC of Sarah Puissegur's debut fantasy novel. Although, I feel the book could have been much shorter and chapters broken down further, I am excited to see what happens next in the series!

My first encounter with this book was idly browsing during my brief foray on Threads and encountering a new indie author promoting their upcoming first book, and the blurb intrigued me enough to want to know more... A Sparrow Among Stars is a gripping high fantasy adventure that will definitely appeal to fans of Narnia, Eragon and Lord of the Rings...

"When her family is murdered by servants of the tyrannical king Antoine Rexton, Serena Finch must race across an oppressed kingdom, pursued by the king's hunters, guarded by a band of mysterious warriors sworn to see her safely to the court of the exile Queen Elara, who fights to topple Rexton from the throne he stole from their family. At the same time, Rexton's more noble son Anteros finds himself being drawn to a pretty girl held captive in his father's dungeons and appalled at Rexton's cruelty to try and gain information on Serena's whereabouts..."

This is a good start: I definitely enjoyed the setting, which is beautifully lavish and well defined. Serena makes an intriguing heroine, another youth thrust onto a quest by tragic circumstances (I'm a sucker for the "Doomed hometown" and "orphaned protagonist" tropes, and the supporting cast of the Guardians were engaging people (my personal favourite was Crystal). I also loved the budding romance between Anteros and Talitha, that was very sweet (and how their last chapter ends definitely makes me want to know what happens next): I also like his sister Sabine, who felt like a less obnoxious Sansa Stark, and the intrigues at the court of Elara were compelling. If I had any complaints, it'd be I felt certain parts of the journey could have had more danger to them, to give a greater sense of urgency, & while I liked Will & Rigel, I wasn't quite convinced on them as romantic partners for Serena. I also wish Cameron had survived (he had the potential to be a great secondary antagonist).

But those are minor gripes: overall, this is a cracking debut novel from a new indie author I definitely recommend!

We start this story with Serena facing sudden tragedy. She then has to figure out what to do with her life and more importantly who to trust. Her mother's dying wish was for her to escape so that's what she sets out to do. We meet many side characters who become equally as important as Serena, including a mysterious queen. Can she trust her? Has she been lied to all along?

Sara's writing makes it incredibly easy to follow along multiple character's storyline without losing any interest or being confused. I genuinely enjoyed all of the characters, with the exception of the villians of course. This journey felt epic. There's elves, dwarfs, a bit of magic, found family and sweet romance. I couldn't help but find myself drawn to Talitha's storyline. I am eager to find out what is next in store for all the characters.

This has the potential to be a fantastic fantasy, and there's a lot of elements and ideas I liked (particularly in the chapters following Serena's journey), but I personally struggled with the glacial pacing, which felt a bit too slow for the story it wants to tell. But if that slow burn is something you like in a fantasy, it looks like there will be much to enjoy here in this series.

In A Sparrow Among Stars, debut author Sara Puissengur invites readers into a world of exiled kingdoms, lost heirs, rouge princes, elves, dwarves, and named swords. She introduces them to Serena Finch, a determined, independent, perceptive female protagonist with the grit to rival Katniss Everdeen, Celaena Sardothien, Violet Sorrengail, Lila Bard, and Alanna of Trebond.

As everything Serena thought she knew about her family and life unravels, Serena and her guardians travel across Hyrosencia, fleeing the cruelty of conqueror King Antoine Rexton.

The setting of their journey is foreign yet familiar. It leads them from Serena’s small, close-knit farming village to border town boarding houses, an underground network of dwarven cities, and the fresh, clear air of a northern castle in exile.

By the end of the first chapter, I was hooked by both the relatability of Serena’s character and the stomach-churning evil of King Antoine Rexton’s depravity. The subplots were equally compelling, as the lives of Serena’s best friend, long-lost family members, and childhood love interest are uprooted by the fate of Hyrosencia and its lost heir.

The world of Hyrosencia is beautifully rich, in the veins of Narnia and Alagaësia, yet accessible. I find the geography of epic fantasy can distract me; confusion over city names and locations can pull me out of the story. In A Sparrow Among Stars, though, I did not get lost or need to pause and reference the accompanying map.

Instead, I spent the whole book torn between needing to read just one more chapter and wanting to slow down to make the story last longer.

From the dedication - “for everyone who needs to escape, and for everyone we lost too soon” - it was clear this book would be special. Although having written an epic fantasy in form, Sara Puissengur explores with grace the themes of unexpected change, familial loss, complex grief, fractured family relationships, chosen family, patriotic duty, isolation, and personal healing. Here’s just one of the many great quotes throughout the book:

“Change is not all bad,” Crystal said. “People respond to the heaviness of change in different ways. Some collapse under it, but others are molded into something else entirely - sometimes something greater.”

I highly recommend picking up a copy of A Sparrow Among Stars - the action is fast-paced, the characters are memorable, and the setting is gorgeous - so that you can join me in supporting a new author and in eagerly awaiting the release of its sequel!

Book Overview

Determined to keep his stolen crown and the besieged kingdom of Hyrosencia, King Antoine Rexton hunts Garrick loyalists without remorse. When his bloodthirst fixes upon Serena Finch, he orders his Enforcing Army to kill her and anyone who stands between them.
Labeled a traitor by the unrelenting sovereign, Serena must flee her idyllic homeland and cross treacherous mountains to seek asylum in the City of Mercy, the last stronghold of Queen Elara Garrick’s realm.

Serena Finch is being hunted by King Antoine Rexton of the besieged kingdom of Hyrosencia. The Queen who fled sends her best loyalist guardians to retrieve Serena. Serena is gentle and kind hearted, so will she find the required strength for the journey, or will she succumb to the tyrant?

I don’t often bestow a novel the title of a six star read, but A Sparrow Among Stars is, without a doubt, a six star read. It is a work of art. This novel not only cradled my heart with the heartwarming scenes between characters, but this novel also stomped on my heart during the tumultuous events that unfolded. I truly felt like I underwent every emotion that the characters felt - and I absolutely love when a novel puts me through a rollercoaster of emotions as it shows how beautifully written and well put together it is.

I also cannot downplay the multiple perspectives, it felt so compulsory to me, to be able to see all sides of the story, so that there was no questions left lingering throughout, but it was not without plot twists!! And, let’s not forget for the how the novel ended - I need the second novel!! 😫🙏🏻

I could truly write a whole essay on how astounding this novel is, so take my word when I say that it is an absolute must read!

“The kingdom overtaken shall mourn and wait as their children suffer and grow. The man who stole his crown shall meet his fate when the true heir fights for their rightful throne”

Firstly, I love a prophecy, especially one that’s true meaning is yet to be revealed! I was kept on my toes around every turn, and eating up every little piece of information I could get.

Sara’s characters are so beautifully written. Each person we meet is so unique with fully formed personalities, well thought out back stories and motivations as to why they are on the path they currently walk. I also love the Chosen Family trope, and the way each character is slowly healing a piece of themselves through their bonds with each other.

Serena’s journey to self discovery is amazing. Despite her losses and struggles, she finds a new strength she never imagined she could possess. It was such a beautiful narrative.

The character I didn’t expect to fall in love with is definitely Anteros. He really wiggled his way into my heart so quickly, and every moment with him I cherished. Getting to see behind his facade was so refreshing and his charm and charisma had me giggling and kicking my feet.

I cannot wait for the next book! I need it immediately!

A Sparrow Among Stars was an engaging read, and I particularly enjoyed the perspectives of Serena and Elara. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series to see where their stories go next.

The story itself was enjoyable and filled with all the classic elements of a great fantasy novel: elves, dwarfs, commoners, queens, and nobility. However, I did find it a bit challenging to keep up with the many different characters and their names that were introduced throughout the journey. At times, this made it difficult to follow the plot as closely as I would have liked.

Despite this, I found myself fully immersed in Serena’s journey and appreciated the multiple perspectives the author provided. Seeing the story unfold not just from Serena’s viewpoint but also from Queen Elara’s and even the enemy lands with Anteros added depth to the narrative and kept me invested in the outcomes for all involved.

Overall, A Sparrow Among Stars is a solid start to what promises to be an exciting fantasy series.

I received an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of this book and am grateful for the opportunity to read and review it.
