Please note this is a revised version of the book previously published as Where Are You? by L.E. Hill
Sisters are meant to look after each other. But Josie and I have secrets. Just like our mother did.
My husband and I have moved back into my childhood a pretty stone cottage by the sea. Our two kids love the huge garden and the views are breathtaking.
The renovations will probably cost twice what they said, but I know it’ll be amazing in the end.
I’m baking a cake when the builder calls me over. ‘We’ve found something.’
‘What do you mean?’
‘Bones,’ he says. ‘You’ve got bones buried at the bottom of your garden.’
The first person I call is my sister Josie. She’ll know what to do. We’ve been there for each other ever since our mother walked out more than twenty years ago. We were just children. The only contact we had was a card on our birthdays — but they suddenly stopped when we reached the age of twenty-one.
We ask our father about the bones. What he tells us will shatter everything I thought I knew about my family.

This book has so many twist and turns. It’s a fast paced read with multiple perspectives. Tara lives in the house she grew up in. They are renovating the backyard when bones are found which unearth family secrets. Her sister Josie comes back to town after finding her husband cheating. She also has her secrets.
The timeline is pretty straightforward. You have Josie, Tara, their mom, and Grandmas perspectives to read. The ending is really good!
The story revolves around two sisters Tara and Josie and their mother who went missing when they were children. Tara has moved into their childhood home, Manse, and is getting it renovated to incorporate her workspace, when the workers find something in their garden. Human bones, and from the looks of it, bones from more than one person. What actually happened in that house?
Tara and Josie’s life are as different as it gets. Tara is a mother of two kids, twins Oliver and Millie. She is happily married to Mark. Josie on the other hand is in a toxic relationship with her husband Dimitri, but is doing all she can to change that status to ex-husband. Josie also has to take care of their Gran, who is nearly 90 years old. So, finding bones in the backyard of her childhood home is not exactly what she needs right now.
The story alternates between the POVs of Tara and Josie with an unnamed narrator in between. This is a domestic thriller and has a lot of family secrets to unravel. Even in their thirties, the sisters are still stuck on why their mother left them. The reader can’t help but keep on guessing as to who is this unidentified person whose story is also central to the plot. It drags a bit, but everything get revealed at its pace.
The main characters are believable and there a quite a few side characters to add a bit of much needed distraction from the central plot. However, some of the stories involving the side characters do remain unresolved. Maybe, those weren’t important enough in terms of the main family concerned.
I was provided with a digital copy of the book by Love Book Tours, at no cost to me. All opinions are my own.
Where Are You is a fast paced mystery novel full of twists.
Josie has moved back to her childhood town to stay with her Grandma after her marriage breaks down. Tara (Josies sister) is renovating their old family home at the time when builders find bones buried in the garden. And there is the fact their mother has been missing for twenty years!
It is told through several different characters which I enjoy as you get lots of backstory to many of the characters as well as different view points. There are also some time jumps throughout the novel, but it is very easy to keep up with.
The main mystery is who's bones are in the garden and what happened to Tara and Josies mum when she disappeared. The storyline is very fast paced, so the drama and mystery unfold very quickly. The entire way through has you constantly changing your mind about what has happened and who knows about it. I hadn't guessed until all was revealed.
As it is fast paced and twisty it is definitely a mystery that draws you in and has the "just one more chapter" factor to it.
I think the book cover is a great fit for the novel, it's slightly creepy, mysterious and makes you wonder what it is all about.
The writing style is a good mix of keeping the story moving at a good pace whilst still being descriptive. I feel like I can picture the scene without that sacrificing the speed of the book.
I found Where Are You a refreshingly different read, the storyline is original, the characters are all very likeable and the scene is well set.
Great premise which didn’t quite deliver thrills or much mystery
‘I killed my husband just a few days before Christmas. It was a cold and damp afternoon, and I’d been doing my best to decorate the tree he’d brought home after another night at the pub. I was sure he’d stolen it but knew better than to question him. Tinsel and baubles and blood. I ran out the door into the darkness and didn’t look back.’ … This strong opening promised great things to come. While the narrative and plot are okay, I can’t call this a gripping thriller or a mystery.
This is a read with lots of characters that occasionally flashes briefly into the past with teasers of what happened. For me, it was too crowded, too convoluted, and a tad far fetched.
However, I related to the family dynamics and stresses of daily life. As a family drama with a small police/crime element it would work better than calling it a gripping psychological thriller. This line about sums it up … ‘ Unless they know something I don’t. Which is a strong possibility, because I know something they don’t. It seems we’re all keeping secrets.’
On the whole an okay read. For those who like a cosier mystery and family dramas, definitely give this book a go. It gets a solid three stars from me, which I consider a positive review.

NOTE ON RATINGS: I consider a 3-star rating a positive review. Picky about which books I give 5 stars to, I reserve this highest rating for the stories I find stunning and which moved me.
5 STARS: IT WAS AMAZING! I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! — Highly Recommended.
4 STARS: I WOULD PULL AN ALL-NIGHTER — Go read this book.
3 STARS: IT WAS GOOD! — An okay read. Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it.
2 STARS: I MAY HAVE LIKED A FEW THINGS —Lacking in some areas: writing, characterisation, and/or problematic plot lines.
1 STAR: NOT MY CUP OF TEA —Lots of issues with this book.
The prologue hooked me in instantly. My mind started running away with itself straight away trying to figure out what this book was about and where it was going to lead me.
I found the main characters Tara & Josie easy to connect to as they were so likeable. I loved the fact that the plot covered so much of the back story. It have answers to the questions that you were thinking before reaching the pivotal conclusion.
I felt the issues discussed and portrayed by the book were very realistic. Too often books like these go for the shock factor.
If you are looking for a fast paced mystery novel, I would definitely give this one a go.
This was a quick read, though more domestic suspense than a mystery/thriller, in my opinion. It centers on sisters Tara and Josie, who haven’t been close over the last couple of years but are thrown into some family drama when bones are discovered in the backyard of their childhood home, where Tara now lives. The POV alternates primarily between the two, with a few chapters from other characters thrown in throughout.
While Josie and Tara seemed like likable characters, I didn’t find their voices to be all that distinct, and sometimes had to remind myself whose chapter I was reading. I appreciated the fact that their father and grandmother were close, which also added to the family drama. I figured out the big twist pretty early in but there were a couple other surprises, all which made for a quick read. The ending tied things up nicely, though was a little anticlimactic.
Overall, this was a fast paced read that held my interest, though I didn’t feel like anything shocking really occurred. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is a solid fast paced thriller! There are twists that are good. The ending didn't go the way I thought it would which is always a good thing. I would recommend this! Special Thank You to Lorna Henderson, Joffe Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
the blurb of this book sounded so good but it was just poor execution and i swear she kept mixing up the peoples name like one second someone was calling her tara and then josie and it was the same girl didn’t love the ending either
This was an interesting story that is told by alternating chapters from the viewpoint of each sister. Nice buildup to the climax; unexpected twists. Only regret is it didn’t end with a nice and tidy happy ending. I want to thank Joffe Books for the opportunity to read and review this book
Wow🤩 now THIS is definitely an addictive psychological thriller. You NEED to add this gem to your summer reading list! The author has skillfully written an absolute stunner.
Two Sisters is an addictive page turner that left me stunned and surprised on many occasions and for that reason my hat's off to the author with a well earned 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rarely am I left questioning what could be going on, thinking I have mysteries solved, only to be surprised in the end. This book is written from many different character points of view and time shifts leading up to the thrilling journey to uncover a family's past after the disappearance of their mother. The characters are well developed and although the chapters shift quickly and constantly between viewpoints, you feel connected to each person's struggles and won't be able to put it down. The entire story circles back around so flawlessly concluding with answers and 'ah-hah' moments on several levels. I was amazed with the many twists and the suspense of what is really going on. You will often be convinced you have it figured, only to be surprised you don't. While I normally enjoy a more gruesome thriller, (this book is not), it will not leave you disappointed at all, going into so many timelines, well developed characters, and different points of view on the same mystery. Well done to the author - I will be following in anticipation of future psychological thrillers!
Thank you for the opportunity to read this before publication! #TwoSisters #NetGalley
Family secrets keep being revealed throughout. This is not my usual type of book, but I enjoyed it. Although billed as "Choc Lit," here we have narcissism, coercive control, and a missing person just as a starter.in this psychological thriller. The two Sisters of the title have their differences and have become estranged, but are reunited in their family home along with their father and grandmother. There are many twists and turns and subplots as this moves relentlessly to a shocking conclusion. This multilevel tale is well written. The chapters are seen from the perspective of each sister, the gran, and another (I don't want to give anything away). This, together with a jump back in the timeline, it worked ok for me, but some readers might find this a little confusing.
Thank you, Joffe Books group for the ARC copy for advance reading.
I kept Changing my mind as to who done what. There are lots a twist to this story which in a mystery is always good. I liked how the author developed the characters I ended up connecting with them. I liked the plot and the characters of this story. I’ll let you decide if you like the end.😉

This is a twisted, fast-pace read that's told from multiple perspectives. The characters are well-developed. The suspense grew throughout the book. There are a few subplots, making this multilayered story hard to put down. I liked the author's writing style. It's told in the present day and the past. The ending was shocking.

Moving back into her childhood home seems great, especially for Tara and her children, but when a builder digs up some bones in the garden, this triggers off a chain of events. But Tara has more things to worry about with her dad being admitted to hospital with a heart attack and her gran ( her dad's mum has dementia), her gran is very agitated because she can't visit her son in hospital. Whilst finding some clothes for her dad whilst he is in hospital, she finds a wooden box with her mothers rings in. She is puzzled why these are there and returns them where she found them. But this certainly niggles her thoughts day and night, wondering why? Her sister Josie is missing having a man in her life. Her partner is very obsessive and domineering and I honestly think she could do better in life without him. But there are also secrets here! It's not long before lots of secrets start to appear, family secrets, some going back to before they were born. But also secrets from just a couple of weeks ago, like why exactly Josie turned up on her own. Their dad is also hiding something, and you end up thinking everyone has secrets, or do they? A timeslip storyline, that's still easy to keep track of the characters and what's happening. But enough to give you background knowledge of the family. A great psychological thriller that certainly kept my attention throughout the book.
4* Oh how we practise to deceive... Well-intentioned lies, loss, heartache and love.
Joffe Books are turning out to be a rather nice surprise, given that they're set in the UK, lack faux American gloss, are believable and feel real without huge dramatisation. This is no different to their MO, and it's worth a read, though it could do with editing to get rid of filler.
The tale is told in Tara and Jodie's present and past, with the tale of another female - avoiding spoilers here - told in the past, with good hints and enough to keep me engrossed in both timelines. Did I 'see' the sisters? Not really, as unfortunately the book has a lot of filler, namely in Dimitri and Jaz/Jason who don't really seem to have much of a role to play, and we just got the sisters' thoughts. The tale could have survived without either guy, tbh. There was also filler in Tara not being married to Mark, but having a family with him, with their young twins asking why their parents aren't married, and the - here - faux drama of the mammogram (it didn't seem like a PSA on the part of the author).
There's a shock from someone who seemed innocuous and kindhearted, but who has a lot to answer for, though she had a timely departure. It was sad that her victim couldn't come clean and missed out on so much, but hey, she wasn't squeaky clean herself, so maybe justice works in mysterious ways. Still, it's worth a read, despite the not-really-believable cop, Brian, who, tbh, needed a good dressing down, if not a sacking for his unprofessionalism.

Two Sisters by Lorna Henderson is a recommended family drama full of secrets and reads like a soap opera. This is a revised edition of the novel that was originally published as Where Are You? by L.E. Hill.
Tara and Josie had their mother leave them when they were children. Now Tara and her family are living in their old childhood home and fixing it up. Josie is staying nearby with their grandmother after she left her husband. Their father lives in the same town. When builders find bones buried in the garden it starts an investigation. It also marks the start of one twist/reveal after another.
The narrative is told through alternate points-of-view in the present and the past, basically Tara and Josie with an unknown voice occasionally. One drama after another follows and quickly multiplies.
The good news is that Two Sisters will hold your attention like any good, over-the-top soap opera does. These people have a constant barrage of one thing after another and plenty of hints along the way that they are all holding secrets. The bad news is that not all of the dramas/secrets are necessarily worth the suspense and some may induce eye-rolling.
Still, you will keep reading to see what on earth is going to happen or be revealed next. Thanks to Joffe Books for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion. http://www.shetreadssoftly.com/2024/0...
Tara and Josie are sisters, they aren't overly close and both have been keeping secrets since their disappeared out of their lives over 20 years ago. Now Tara is living in the family home and during a renovation bones are discovered in the garden. Despite being a little estranged from Josie in London her first thought as they were once there for each other before an argument caused a rift is to call her sister for help. Someone knows more about who is at the bottom of the garden but is it just a random stranger or is the truth closer to home and something to do with the events that caused their mother to suddenly leave all those years ago? The girls have secrets and very soon they all realise that not only both of them have been keeping skeletons in the closet but their father and gran have hidden things in their backgrounds too. A tangled family drama full of dark deeds and past mistakes. A really intriguing read to keep you guessing.
Thank you to NetGalley, author Lorna Henderson and Joffee publishing for the ARC and opportunity to review this book.
This was the first book I have ready by this author and it was well done. I gave it 3 stars because I feel it was lacking suspense and thrills.
I enjoyed reading from each characters perspective. I feel the author could have developed each character a little more and added some suspense to the secrets they were keeping.
The storyline was good. Again, lacking something that make me want to keep turning the page. I feel this author has so much potential for 4 and 5 star books though and would still recommend this book to authors.
It wasn’t fast paced but it was interesting. It kept my attention just not in that must keep reading kind of way.
Josie and Tara are sisters whose mother left them 20 years ago, leaving them with their father, a church minister, and their gran.
Josie has just left her husband while Tara and her husband and small twins have bought the sisters’ former childhood home. While they’re having some renovations done, the builders discover bones buried at the bottom of the garden. Tara rings Josie and they then speak to their dad, only to find out that he knows about the bones.
I thought I had this one all worked out, but I didn’t! A well-written and gripping storyline, with a few twists and turns to keep you guessing.
Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for an advance reader copy in return for an honest review.
This book was quite the adventure to read with twists and turns here, there, and everywhere. There are some story bits that I would have loved to see expanded on for further story development but there is so much going on I understand why they weren’t.
I don’t normally like when we go back in time in the middle of the book to show how we got where we were at the start of the book but that is just a personal preference.
Overall the book was a good short-ish read that I, and others, will enjoy!
A thoroughly enjoyable book with many layers. We have the two main characters, estranged sisters who come together when their lives start to fall apart, with all they thought they knew and those they trusted not being what they thought they were. There are numerous sub plots to keep our interest piqued and lots of surprises along the way. The story is told from different perspectives and timelines which could be slightly confusing but didn't spoil the story at all. The ending is fantastic and a bolt from the blue. I had no clue it was coming. I'd recommend this book and it will keep you guessing right to the end!
The book is written in multiple perspectives which I feel adds to the depth of the story. It is fast paced but I don’t feel like there were pieces missing due to the speed. It had some shocking twists which I always enjoy in a psychological thriller. When a book is able to keep me guessing and still unable to guess the ending it is a good one!
I am happy to have stumble upon Lorna Henderson on NetGalley. I will be looking forward to their next publishing. Thank you, Lorna, NetGalley and Joffe Books for letting me read this book early. Expected publication is August 15, 2024.
I couldn’t put this down it was so good. There are two stories, the first of a young woman, pregnant forced by another to flee after the death of her abusive husband. We know nothing about her, not even her name. Then the two sisters Josie and Tara, estranged for over a year, but reunited when Josie returns home after leaving her husband whom she had found in their bed with the neighbour. Intertwining the tales is the discovery of bones in Tara’s garden and how this impacts the family. Well written and captivating.
A mystery revolving around two sisters Tara and Josie. When they were children their mother disappeared and now as adults both of them still wonder why she left. Tara is living in the house they grew up in with her own family and having work done in the garden which includes buried bones. The discovery kicks off a police investigation that travels back in time to before the sisters were born.
Told from multiple perspectives the book delivers a story of family drama, mystery and multiple twists.
Their mother disappeared when Josie and Tara were young. They never knew why. Tara has settled down with Mark and has twins, 4 years old. Josie has just left her husband and returns to her family, Tara, their father and their gran. During building at Tara and Marks property bones are found and slowly family secrets unfold. The book alternates between the two sisters, telling their story. This was a good read which I did not want to put down.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a great read. I liked the different characters and how the different characters added to the drama. I liked how it went forwards and back then came together at the end. I did have an idea about the end. Although it didn't turn out quite as I expected it to which was a nice surprise. I would definitely recommend it. Would make a great gift for someone who is a fan of thrillers.
I was captured from beginning to end with this gripping, well written storyline and plot. With many a twist and turn and strong characters. I loved the way secrets and the past unfolded into the present day. It did keep me guessing and intrigued right to that final twist of an ending I didn't see coming It is a very enjoyable book . My thanks to Joffe books. This is my honest and unbiased review.
I loved reading this story, I read in in a day and a half. I enjoyed the world building as well as the intertwined past/present tense elements of the book. I also enjoyed the integrated pop culture references as it made the story seem more realistic and possible as if it could happen in our world. I would definitely read more books by Lorna Henderson
Two sisters are trying to navigate their lives as everything around them seems to be falling apart. Tara is renovating her home when the workers find some bones in the backyard. Josie has just left her husband and is back living with Gran. Its very much a story about the secrets we keep especially from our own family.
Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for the ARC.
