The Edge of Brightness by Rachel Song is the third novella in The Chanters Novellas. As I have read the other two novellas in this series, I was eager to read the new one.
Princess Sahar is a cast-off woman due to a broken engagement. She is a tough one and does not let anyone know how she really feels. But when she meets Jianyu, he makes her a deal: get into a fake relationship and help him to get his hands on a mysterious book. This way he gets access to the house he believes the book is hidden in and he helps her to make people like her again.
This plot sounded so good, as I always love a fake dating trope. Sahar, I loved, she is fierce, but hurts inside. Jianyu is a great character, he is funny, has magic and really wants to help Sahar. They have a great chemistry and I loved their interactions. The house where the book is hidden is also the house where her stepbrother lives under guard and he is something else. He had a main role in an earlier novella, but it is not necessary to have read that one (but you should read the other novellas). The worldbuilding and magic system is more developed in The Edge of Brightness and I loved it. With each book there is something more and Rachel Song builds upon what she thought out in her earlier novels.
The writing style is nice, flowing and fast paced and as there is this mystery about the book I was glued to the pages. A lot happens, there is magic, drama, humour, banter, some flirting, romance, and danger.
The Edge of Brightness is a great novel, one I enjoyed reading a lot! If you like fantasy like I do, go on and read these novellas. They are a great way to spend some time in a magical world.
I can't decide if I liked this one or the 2nd book (The Shadow's Edge) more. As quick a novellas tend to be, I really feel that Rachel did a great job immersing and building on the world throughout the series, and especially in this one. The way previous characters come into play in this book while also telling a story of new characters really brings everything together and makes the story feel larger than 160 pages. I'm really curious about this ancient book of magic and how it will be evolved in the 4th book and what will happen to the villian throughout the series!
This is the third novella from this author that I have read, and I cannot get enough of her compelling characters and the increasingly engaging world building! Ever single novella is an adventure, with swoony romance, magic, and the perfect mixture of a character driven and plot driven story. I am looking forward to the next book, and hope that it has even more reveals about the magic of this world and the characters in it!
