“We’re mates, Perry.”

This morning a meth lab fell through my kitchen ceiling, I lost my job, and my car broke down, officially making today the worst day of my life. The last thing I need to deal with is a naked, green-haired man with a loose grip on reality.

Or is it just that reality isn’t what I think it is?

LOUISA MASTERS started reading romance much earlier than her mother thought she should. While other teenagers were sneaking out of the house, Louisa was sneaking romance novels in and working out how to read them without being discovered. She’s spent most of her life feeling sorry for people who don’t read, convinced that books are the solution to every problem. As an adult, she feeds her addiction in every spare second, only occasionally tearing herself away to do things like answer the phone and pay bills. She spent years trying to build a “sensible” career, working in bookstores, recruitment, resource management, administration, and as a travel agent, before finally conceding defeat and devoting herself to the world of romance novels. Louisa has a long list of places first discovered in books that she wants to visit, and every so often she overcomes her loathing of jet lag and takes a trip that charges her imagination. She lives in Melbourne, Australia, where she whines about the weather for most of the year while secretly admitting she’ll probably never move.

It’s like The Fifth Element meets Captain Planet, and include an Earth-saving mission, some reincarnated soulmates, and make it all gloriously queer… which is to say, I’m all in.

1.5 Stars (it started with an interesting premise, and a funny meet cute, but this novella was not successful in telling a story, and this story is a tragedy and not a romance.)

I'm not sure what to say about this novella. This novella was not a standalone story, in my opinion. Normally when I read a story that is not standalone, I like to read all parts of it before I judge it, so I can keep the whole story arc in perspective and judge it in relation to the entire story that's being told, to take into account the creative license decisions that the author is making. But in this case, I don't know where this is going, and I don't feel like it's necessarily going in a direction I'm going to enjoy, so who knows if I will pick up the other books in this series. So I figure I should just post a review and say my two cents.

I think this book is a marketing failure, the author should have set expectations for what the heck this series is doing. I know this is largely a me thing, because I've got OCD tendencies. But IMO, authors need to very clearly set expectations about whether their book is standalone or not, so readers know what they're getting into. Knowing this author's other books, usually the books are standalone, but with an overarching plot. This did not feel stand alone at all, so it was a very frustrating read.

Perry is having the worst day of his life. A meth lab fell through the roof of his apartment, and now he's homeless. He showed up at work to the FBI raiding his company and now he's jobless, plus he had to be interrogated by the police for the second time of the day. And now his car has broken down on the side of a random road. Then a hot naked guy shows up in the middle of the road all of a sudden, and claims they are mates. Perry thinks the guy is nuts, but he wants to get him someplace safe, so they stick together.

Aether is a reincarnated element of life, destined to find his mate every time he's reincarnated. He's reincarnated every time the Earth is in serious danger environmentally, to try to bring it back into balance or see it through a transition time if some species or element of nature is dying out.

I thought the premise was interesting. And the meet cute was funny, Perry had the worst day in history. I appreciate the zany humor. But this story left me so confused about what it was that I had read and what the rest of the series was going to be, that I can't rate it anything good. Books shouldn't leave you as confused as this one did - unless it's trying to be deliberately a mystery, and that's not the impression I'm getting here. I need to be told a cohesive story, I need some artistry to what you're weaving for me to read. Pretty much nothing happened in this book. Perry just meets Aether and realizes who he is. There's no actual love story or plot advancement. Nothing grows. The book technically should be classified as a tragedy instead of a romance, because the couple never ends up together, they always get separated between reincarnations and the time that they do have together is never peaceful or positive. It doesn't end on even HFN, let alone an HEA. And the overarching plot of the series is kind of introduced but not with any degree of detail, so you get no satisfaction / plot resolution at all at the end of this novella.

I'm confused about how Aether's reincarnation works, he seemed to appear all of a sudden as an adult, whereas Perry's character reincarnated as a baby and lived almost 30 years on Earth alone before meeting up with Aether. It seems inconsistent. And I don't personally like what this means for Aether and Perry's relationship. It makes for a sad premise. That the two of them only get to be together when they need to try to save or condemn species, and it's destined for Perry to live 30 or so years on his own, unaware of his true love, being with other people, before he meets his lover again. It doesn't seem fair to Aether, who seems to jump into the world reincarnating as an adult and find Perry quickly. Never forgetting Perry, whereas Perry forgets him all the time. Aether and Perry can never have happily ever after, they can never have a monogamous relationship because Perry can't be monogamous if he doesn't know about Aether.

Some notable moments:

"The rational adult part of me thinks that’s a very bad idea and wants to politely insist we clothe Aether. The rest of me has reached the point in this day where a human-size cabbage with arms and legs could walk up and start talking to me, and I’d just roll with it."

"Flame pulls a face. “I’m not sure if we have enough liquor for him to have a meltdown.” Um…? “Are you suggesting that I drink my troubles away?” I demand indignantly, momentarily forgetting my plan to sneak out. How dare he? I mean, he’s not wrong, but still. He doesn’t know me. Aqua shrugs. “You have the last dozen incarnations.” “And before that, alcohol hadn’t been discovered,” George adds."

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

Audio: 4 stars for Joel Leslie, the audio can be purchased off of Louisa’s website

Book: 2 stars

Beginning was great but it is literally 50 pages, so the relationship was lacking but the premise is cool.

Only in Perry’s POV, and I was wishing for Aether’s POV

I know these are all short novellas so I’ll be interested in how the relationships work in each and how we can connect to the characters.

This was definitely interesting but it felt way too short for me to really get any connection to either character or to have any real interest in what it was they were doing.

I was hopeful that the other four books would be full length, but I think they're all shorts, so I'm a little sceptical about how much I will enjoy the series. I'm one of those readers who needs to get to know a character before I care about what they're doing and I just didn't feel any kind of strong pull to anything in this book unfotunately.

This whole reincarnation storyline isn't my jam. They already fell in love millennia ago. And now they're going to save the world from climate change and human stupidity?

This is the republished story that first appeared in the Fated mates anthology so there's no new content.

It works beautifully as the introduction to this series of novellas from Louisa Masters that focuses on a group of men who embody the different elements that make life work.

Aether is a green-haired sweetheart who has to wait every time he's reincarnated for his love to remember who he is.

His appearance on Earth is generally a bad idea as it means all four of the "main" elements are out of sync.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the on-going story arc works through the rest of these novellas.

To Do List for when reading this story...

1) Suspend reality
2) Begin reading
3) Enjoy!!!

I think this is going to be a very entertaining series, although I hope the following books will be a bit more in-depth. I was extremely surprised by the amount of backstory that this author managed to squeeze in just a few pages. Excellent job!!!

I originally read this in the Fated Mates Anthology. I must have been stingy on the stars then because this is 5 star worthy. I love the premise of the story, the inside jokes that Perry doesn’t get…until he does, and all the intricacies of their why and how Perry, Aether, and the guys are on Earth. Excited to keep going!!

“This is my family, and we’re going to save the world… or end humanity.”

(ENG) This is the first book in the series, where the author introduces us to the world where the whole story will unfold.
It was such a delight to read this short, super funny book! I enjoyed getting to know all the characters and seeing the love that exists between them.
Even though there are lots of laughs, the book also raises a very important issue about environmental damage. This is a new approach to a romance, and I'm already curious about how the story will continue.

So it's a wrap on Aether by Louisa Masters!

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is an MxM Romance Novella!

This book was short and easy to read.

This book touches upon the topic of Climate change brought upon by Human on Earth 🌍 and how Mother Nature is running it's course by having natural disasters and calamities.

To prevent those natural disasters and calamities from destroying humanity, the five elements are born or incarnated. Out of which we are firstly introduced to Aether.

He is like itself. He is the protector of all life on Earth. He is mated to Perry who is the Angel of Death. The person who decides to let dynasties go extinct by living as the species who can no longer be helped.

They are literally two sides of a coin dated to be together and it's beautiful. The short stories were quick, interesting and very eye opening!

I was lucky to receive the ARC of this book so thanks Louisa, I truly grateful and this books was worth it!!

I hope you guys love reading this book as well!

Happy Reading!!

4/5 stars! This is such a cute novella by a favorite author of mine. I needed a short, cozy read to get me out of a slump and this hit the spot. This is the first of the novellas in the Elemental Men and I can't wait to get my hands on the book where they're all going to be published together.

Was this short? Yes
Did it lack some depth I like in my full-length books? Yes
Did that make sense since it's a novella? Also yes

Aether and Perry were cute and I appreciated that even though they are fated mates, it wasn't so heavy on the instalust that Perry ceased to function. Overall, excited to read the rest of the novellas and see how these Elements + Peregrine will save/end the world!

Simple and short. It's a fun, quick little read. I was hoping for more. The premise is interesting, but I think the story is just too short to really get invested. There's a lot of potential here. I will probably still try out the rest of the series because I am pretty curious about the overall world it's based in.

When I first heard about this series, my immediate thought that this was going to be a spicy take on Captain Planet. I was wrong about the Captain Planet (though I did enjoy the reference in book 4) but right about the spicy. These are adorable, funny, smexy reads that I would recommend bingeing back to back because they become addictive. Each book has a different couple but has an overarching theme of conservation and whether humanity can be saved. You'll have to read to the end to find out.

The only downside to this series is that I wish the novellas were longer because I really enjoyed the premise.

I received an eARC and because its freaking cold despite being almost halfway through October (really not enjoying climate change) I have left an honest review

I first read this novella as part of the Heart2Heart: A Paranormal Charity Anthology (Collection), Volume 7. It was super cute, and kind of left us on a cliffhanger so I was excited to see the author is continuing the novellas with all the guys!

Aether is just a sweetie pie. He knew poor Perry was confused and had no idea what he was talking about, yet he trudged on anyway. That's what you do when you find your soulmate, you don't give up on them even if they have no idea who and what you are. I have to hand it to Perry though, he may have thought Aether was a nutjob with green hair, but he made sure to bring Aether back to his family where he figured he'd be safe.

Meeting the guys was the best part of the book. I love their banter and how close they all are. I'm looking forward to each of them finding their other halves as it seems that it's only Aether who has ever been known to have a soulmate. Aqua is next, and he has such a fun personality that I just know his book will be a good time.

Here is Louisa Master's "Aether." It's the first book in her Elemental Men series. It was first published in the Fated Mates charity anthology (no changes have been made), which is where I originally read it (but since I remember none of, I reread it).

["“We’re mates, Perry.”

This morning a meth lab fell through my kitchen ceiling, I lost my job, and my car broke down, officially making today the worst day of my life. The last thing I need to deal with is a naked, green-haired man with a loose grip on reality.

Or is it just that reality isn’t what I think it is?"]

It took me a whillllle to remember this book. As I read it, tiny bits and pieces came back to me, but I was constantly surprised by things.

I remembered the lightning and the tree. I remembered the ode-to-sweatpants. I remembered the slang. I remembered the house and the bros (and the alcohol).

But now, I can read all of the elements getting their HEA...or you know....not, depending on how 'fixing Earth/people' goes.

Also...loooooved the subtle reference to Here Be Dragons.

Who needs Captain Planet when you have Perry and Aether..

Perry was having a bad day.
Then he met Aether.
Then he was having a weird day because he finds out he’s not only fated to Aether but he’s also going to decide the fate of humanity.

What’s a guy to do?

I loved the characters in this book. All of them have a reason to be and not just there for kicks.

Perry’s response to his terrible day was so realistic it was funny.

Aether was that sunshine every book needs to keep the darkness from spiraling out of control.

Oh and the two sisters at the diner they end up at are just that edge of comedic relief without being overbearing.

And then there’s Aqua, Flame, Zephyr and Pebble aka George but we will discuss them in their own stories.

This story and the ones that follow are great at showing that we can do some things on our own but ultimately it takes love of family and close ones to do a job to its fullest.

I also loved how the issue of climate change is looked at in a serious way but with humor and in plain English so it doesn’t seem intimidating.

Next up is Aqua!!

I luckily received a free copy of this book in a complete collection of all five books from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review. That being said, some of this review may be repeated in parts of my reviews of the other books.

I loved this story when I read it in the Fated Mates anthology and was very excited when Louisa stated at the end of it that she had Plans (with a capital P) for all the characters.

If you’ve read it in the anthology nothing has changed but it was still great to reread it in preparation for reading the other stories.

The stories are fairly short but still give you a sense of completeness with a central overarching subplot… kind of. I’m probably not making much sense but if you know Louisa’s writing you’ll more than likely love the books and want to binge read them all. Then you’ll see what I was talking about… or maybe I’m just talking out of my squirrel brain and it only makes sense to me. 🤔 🤷‍♀️

Loved rereading Perry and Aether’s story.

Anywho…

Highly recommend the whole series. Definitely best read in order.

Elemental Men
Aether

MM romance

Have you ever had a horrible day and things just seem to snowball into more horrible things and it feels like nothing will ever go right again. Ya, so did Perry.

Aether - the physical embodiment of life with a chiseled body and stunning green hair. He is like if cotton candy and rainbows created a beautiful and innocent man.

Perry took everything that was thrown at me with a million times more grace than I ever could if I was in his position. I have had some absolutely horrific days, but his took the entire dog crap disaster cake.

Aether was so patient with him and his snippy remarks. They have gone through this quite a few times. LOL. They are incredibly lovely together ( and nuclear hot ). Dominant Perry is hot!

I loved how easily Perry fit right in with Aqua, Flame, Zypher and George. Once they were all together everything came back. Found family, or I guess refound family.

I am really enjoying finding out about each of the guys/elements.

To be fair I initially read this in the anthology it was published in although I did re-read it today. At the initial time I was so hoping the author was going to go further and I’m thrilled that she is.

These are the stories of the elements in human incarnations trying to deal with the disaster humans and climate change have wrought on the earth.

“You all get incarnated to counter whatever natural disaster is fucking with the world. Aether is incarnated when things are dire and more power is needed.” I swallow. “And I’m born to tell you when to stop trying.” It was my decision to let the dinosaurs go, after thousands of years trying to save them and three-quarters of all life at that time. It’s always my decision—it has to be. Only someone who is born and raised and lived every second of their life in those circumstances, in that society, as that species can know when the limit is reached.”

Aether and Perry are adorable although I would’ve loved a longer story for them. Oh well, I’ve got all the guys to look forward to!

story of Aether and Perry

This is a fated mates romance, featuring Perry and Aether, and is book one in the Elemental Men series. This book is a novella.

Perry is not having a good day, everything seems to be going wrong. His apartment’s ceiling caved in, he lost his job and his car just broke down on the side of the road. Suddenly Aether appears in all his birthday suit glory and Perry’s day just went from bad to downright strange. What Perry doesn’t know yet is that Aether is his fated mate and they are here to save the world.

I haven’t read a fated mate book in a while but something about this series drew me in. I loved the set up this first book has done to establish the rest of the series. Excellent start.

I am jumping straight into book two now.

Things to expect in this MM romance are:

MM Novella
Opposites attract
Grumpy / Sunshine
Chance meeting
Amnesia
Past lives
Found family
World in trouble
It’s always been you

I think you have me mixed up with someone else.” I take a big bite to give him time to process all that while I chew.
To my surprise, he just smiles. “That’s what you always say."

What is this delicious little superhero-esque read I've stumbled upon! My only complaint was that this was too short of a short story! Give me another 20-25 pages on the end to cement in At least we made it to the good stuff. *wink wink*

Outside of the romance, the plot is crafty and feels original! I especially loved how the gang all knew how and had the alcohol ready. LOL

I will 100% be picking up Aqua very soon!

Oh, man, so I wasn't sure what I was going to get when this started. It started off with great internal dialogue with Perry (instalove with Perry on my end) and then Aether shows up all naked and with green hair. Perry honestly thought he had escaped from an asylum/care facility and I was right there with him in that thought. I also was thinking Aether was a HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE Himbo and I got really, really scared.

However!! As the story went on (it's only 55 pages) I, like Perry, listened to the story unfold and went through some sort of internal freak out.

By the time this first story ended I was 100% buying with what Aether and the rest of the Elemental Men were selling! I cannot wait to continue on and see how this story unfolds.

Thank you, The Author Agency and Louisa Masters for this ARC.
