Anchors and Eagles #3

What I Should Have Known

Rate this book
One shot could change everything—even their chance at love.

Following a funeral, Navy SEAL operator Bernie Phillips finds himself in a small town filled with gossip and traditions he doesn’t understand. Battling survivor’s guilt, he throws himself into reckless adventures, but nothing prepares him for the fiery, curvy cowgirl he accidentally hit with a bottle cap a week earlier. Despite her clear disinterest and the fact he never thought he’d see her again, Bernie can’t get her out of his mind. What starts as a distraction turns into something far more dangerous—real feelings.

Katalina Fisher has always followed the path her parents laid out for her, even if it means marrying a man she doesn’t love. But when Bernie shows up, her carefully planned life is turned upside down. His relentless attention and her own growing attraction awaken a desire she’s never allowed herself to feel—the freedom to choose her own future.

Romantic feelings, even love, may not be enough when a single shot changes the trajectory of their future. Cattle drives, branding day, rodeos and bucking broncs are the least of their concerns as a life threatening situation comes into play. Now, it’s not just their relationship on the line—it’s Bernie’s chance at redemption.

God yall this series 🤤

Ive never been more in love with a series (Seriously I never shut up about it). I love how every book is in a different setting and lets us get to know each character more in their own ways.

So first off. This book HURTS. Like Marley and Me level breaks your heart. And then it heals you. The amount of time i cried in this book anddd then I took a two day break. But as always I loved this book and getting to know Bernie and his Kit Kat.

(P.S if anyone knows where to get a pink Kevlar vest for my cat lmk)

This is the third book in the Anchors and Eagles series. This is Bernie and Katalina’s heartfelt, slow burn story. They are both struggling with their individual issues. It’s a great age gap, secret romance with drama and heartbreak. This is an amazing, must-read.

❤️Please check trigger warnings before starting the book. Just remember you are loved and wanted here. If you or someone you know is hurting please don't hesitate to reach out to me or someone close.❤️

AND she does it again building her readers up with witty banter and sexual tension between her FMC and MMC, just to shatter your heart and soul to eventually stitch it back together.

Bernie is a Navy SEAL returning home after a devastating loss over sea's ;read What I Should Have Done for more context, to his family's new home in Montana. While on leave he adopts a Sphinx cat named muffin and meets an extremely witty, gritty cowgirl who is VERY naive named Kathrine(Kat). Through out the book Bernie and Kat fight their desire for each other, while dealing with a jealous neighbor to whom Kat is supposed to marry and the demons in Bernie's mind. As the book draws closer to the end, we as the reader get a heartbreaking view of how deep his wounds are, and the only one who chases them away is his yellow, Kat.

While the book deals with PTSD and Self harm two topics that are very dark and heavy. R.L. Atkinson is very delicate but respectful on the topics she has chosen for this story. She very skillfully finds a balance of the dark with the light. Bernie is a perfect example how sometimes those we know as funny and care free may have something weighing on them. Kat isn't afraid to help Bernie battle those thoughts by simply being there and his place to fall.

What do you do when the drunk, loudmouth who unapologetically
hit you in the head with a bottle cap shows up 2,000 miles away in
your small town’s animal shelter where you volunteer?

You hold on to his military ID so he has to grovel in front of your father,
who instantly dislikes anyone in the military, get it back. When the source
of your aggravation arrives, your father jumps into action and barks orders
demanding this man help with the calf branding and castration process.

You’re impressed when, rather than backing down he jumps in and gets to
work alongside the other ranch hands. You eventually stop calling him bottle
cap and call him by his name, Bernie (which is actually his call sign). Because
You promise him a candy bar for his efforts, he nicknames you KitKat - because
Your name is Kat.

The sexual tension between the two of you starts ramping up and hits a high
point when he accepts a dare from the man your father has promised you to.
Even though he’s never ridden a horse, his raw power and strength allows him
to ride the bronc the full 8 seconds when the fool who dared him, and has
ridden for decades, only made 6 seconds.

He’s more of a man than anyone you’ve come across in your small town. With
that in the forefront of your mind you know there’s no one else you’d rather
share your first time with.

“I hummed to myself, plopping down on my bed, and crashed against my back. Each blissful moment shared with Bernie drummed steadily in my head, igniting my body with every touch of his causing goosebumps to erupt on my skin.”

After you spend time getting to know Bernie, you know you can never live
up to your father’s expectations and marry the man he’s chosen for you. Bernie
will be the only man for you.

Unfortunately, Bernie has demons that he doesn’t seem to be able to escape. He’s
convinced he won’t be good enough for you so, after you get shot by a bullet
meant for him, he disappears without a trace.

“Kat deserved more than I was. Wrapping my arms around her shoulders, I cradled her tightly against my chest. Letting uncertainty flutter briefly away.”

Knowing not only that he’s your destiny, but you’re also his, you determine to
find him and give him a piece of your mind.

R.L. Atkinson weaves a complex and emotional love story that will keep you
turning the pages. This is the third book in the Anchors and Eagles series. It
can be read as a standalone, but some of the characters’ stories are told in the
first two books.

You already know what time it is! I was honored to of course receive another arc by my favorite author. Now obviously check your triggers for this one because this does go into suicidal thoughts.

So before I do my usual gush about the book let’s get the “negatives” out of the way.
1. This book was too short for me 😂
2. I did not receive the proper amount of Muffin time 🐈‍⬛
3. I read with my own two eyes the start of Ford and his love interest
4. WYATT GOT OFF EASY
5. I read the damn book too fast and now I’m impatient again 😂

Now that thats out of the way. I absolutely loved Bernie’s book. He was another one of my jellybeans because he is comedic golden retriever of the group. Oh, but he was going through it because of Duncan’s death which is to be expected and we really got inside of his head. Now his relationship with Kit Kat (I love that) was soo fun because she dished it right back to him. And I also loved how he never made her feel bad about herself and expressed that he adored everything about her. I absolutely understood some of the reflexes that Kat had because I went through the same thing in high school. When your best friend at the time is thin, pretty, and every one just gradually navigates to her and you’re the opposite. That can leave a big impact on how you view yourself which is why I’m glad that Bernie, Jane, and Scottie told her that that wasn’t the case.

Wyatt!!!! Oh my goodness I couldn’t stand that bastard. Because baaaaby when he told her how the really felt and then called her fat, I was ready to jump through the screen and beat him silly. I feel like Bernie should have rearranged his face 🙂‍↕️

Can we also talk about how my man was in this book?!?! And we got a sneak peak of the first chapter of his book as well??!! Like I wasn’t expecting that.

Im sooooooo excited for the next book even though that means we are getting closer to end of the series.

𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝐼 𝑆ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝐻𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝐾𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑛 is book #3 in this series and each could be read on its own Bernie story is in part what happens at the end of book #2 with his Seal Team. Each book in this series is so unique to each one of the guys and Bernie, he is suffering from survivors guilt.
What would you say if after drunkenly flipping a bottle cap in a girls face at a bar states away only to run into her again in the small town you will be staying in during your leave? This starts the spark between these two at a pet adoption.
We get to see so many more layers of Bernie here and he is more than his jokester, blow things up and compulsive personality that we know him for. He is also loyal, sweet, human with real feelings unknowingly looking for something to tether him after his loss and Kat give him that with her take no crap, she can take care of her self, Sassy cowgirl personality. I can’t forget Muffin in her pink Kevlar!
I really love how R.L. Incorporated and addresses the mental health for Bernie and the body image struggles for Kat.
The cowboy aspect of this I felt was more on Kat’s family on the ranch while Bernie is still active military he can hold his own on the ranch. There is also an age gap between them (31/23). I love getting both perspectives and the happy ending for these two they really balance each other out. We even get a bonus at the end to show us what we are in store for with the next book.
I couldn’t wait for the release on this one and grabbed it release day. Another great book in this series and would recommend 4.5 ✩

From the moment I picked up this book, I was drawn into an emotional whirlwind that had me laughing, crying, and rooting for the characters every step of the way.

First things first – Bernie is absolutely adorable! There's just something irresistible about a charming ginger with a big heart. And then there’s Kat, strong, sassy, and fiercely independent, she stands her ground and knows how to take care of herself. The chemistry between Kat and Bernie is electric, and their playful banter adds a delightful spice to the story that kept me glued to the pages.

What I loved the most was the way R.L. Incorporated tackled serious themes like mental health and body image struggles. Both Bernie and Kat aren't just love interests; they're real individuals seeking connection and healing. The lush backdrop of Kat’s family ranch and Bernie’s military background adds a rich depth to the story, and I appreciated the exploration of their age gap and how it influences their relationship dynamic.

The pet adoption scene? Adorably heartwarming! It’s the perfect catalyst for their love story and showcases Bernie's loyalty and charm while allowing us to witness Kat's tough exterior softening. And let’s not forget Muffin in her pink Kevlar—what a unique touch that brought a smile to my face!

I was so eager for this release, and it did not disappoint! R.L. Incorporating a glimpse of what’s to come in the next book leaves me itching for more. "What I Should Have Known" is a beautifully crafted story that highlights the power of love and acceptance while navigating life’s traumas and triumphs. Highly recommend this read to anyone looking for a heartfelt romance with depth. Grab it on release day—you won’t regret it!

What I Should Have Known by R.L Atkinson is another great addition to the series of Anchors and Eagles. Bernie’s story is the third book in the series which just keeps getting better with each book.

Bernie’s story is heavy with emotional turmoil and bouts of PTSD. Just a fair warning to please check the trigger warnings prior to reading because your mental health matters.

Bernie is state side during leave after losing one of his brothers on his team with the Navy SEALs. His family had just relocated from Chicago to a small Montana town where he is trying not to allow any of his “normal” behavior to come out while visiting with his mom and brother. Well, that plan slowly dissolved when he comes face to face with the FMC Kat. The same woman he accidentally hit with a bottle cap at a bar after his fallen brother’s funeral. He never thought he would see the gorgeous, sassy plus size FMC again. Well after several interactions, he starts to notice that he is head over heels for this magnificent woman that keeps challenging him to be himself and not hide. A series of events unfold that questions Kat’s safety. But will Bernie keep his promise he made to Kat?

This story was just chefs kiss. I could not get over the fact Bernie became a cat dad to a sphynx who also pushed him to do better. The updates of the previous characters just made this series and book one of my favorite’s. I cannot wait for the next book featuring Ford’s story.

So…
This book actually took me longer to read than the others, simply because I started to get bored towards the end, but I refused to DNF it so I pushed through. After reading the others in the series, I’m pretty disappointed. This book felt a bit rushed and all over the place in my opinion. Although the FMC was plus sized, I feel like she was written from a fatphobic point of view in a way, just with the way she was described and depicted, which just over kinda threw me off. I also didn’t like how the MAJOR scene in the forest(you know which one(pew pew)) was just NEVER talked about again. Like…that was soooo important and kinda the backbone for the whole book but we only get like half a chapter about it, and then it’s never mentioned again. And he hints at this feeling that he’s feeling while in the car in front of Kat’s house, but again…never talked about until the forest scene, and then after that, never again. I also think that Bernie being bi was just kinda stuck in there to say that one of her characters was bi…there was no background about it or something…anything…!! Please! I beg! This book could’ve went in sooooooo many directions but it chose the ground. The plot was mid and easily guessed early in the book, except the random sub plot thrown in at the end…The best part of the book was the intimacy after the 🌶️scenes. Those were very well written and beautifully executed in my opinion. Other than that, I STRUGGLED to finish this book! Long story short, Duncan did NOT die for this s**t…😒

Get ready to get all up in some tissues because literal kn!fe to the heart. I think I need some time to heal. But let’s be real, this was beautifully written. Chef’s kiss. Bernie made me cry and I just wanted to bundle him up and hug him. Then he meets Kat and my heart just melted because they needed to be together. The flirty banter. The wanting. The protectiveness. They’re perfect for one another.

The third novel in the Anchors and Eagles series picks up right after their last mission. The boys and Scottie are home and paying respect for their fallen brother. A little trip to the bar after the service and Bernie finds himself getting wasted and getting into a little trouble with a curvy, cowgirl after hitting her in the head with a bottle cap. Let’s just say, these two will cross paths again.

Bernie and Kat have a slow burn and heated but like diet spice heated relationship. Could you say enemies to lover? To start. But they both have their own baggage and issues that they’re trying to work through. They say you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, and I’m glad that, that bottle cap went rogue. Also honorable mention for Muffin and her little chatters.

Bernie is home on leave after the loss of one of his team. Hurting from the loss he still finds himself trying to cope with the survivors guilt and PTSD. He finds himself entangled with Kat after meeting her twice (once he can’t quite remember 🍻). Kat is essentially promised to someone else, but despite the unfortunate meet cute, they are pulled toward each other and find what the other needs.

I was so excited to read Bernie’s story especially after finding out Kat would be a curvy girl 😍. Everything about Bernie made me smile, he is so loving, self assured and fun loving. Bernie was absolutely what Kat needed in her life. Bernie was struggling and I loved that his family, Muffin and Kat were able to provide that comfort to him. I love a hurt/comfort and I love that this was reversed to most that I have read. Kat really showed up for Bernie in his time of need even though he had hurt her. I am a spicy romance girlie at heart, so I will say would I have killed for spicy scenes from these two 🙂‍↕️, do I know that’s not the point here 🙂‍↕️(but my brain can do the imagining and I know it would be🔥 for these two). I love this team so much and can’t wait for Fords story!

TLDR: Read this book, read the series in order, I’m obsessed. I love these boys with my soul. Some of the best storytelling I’ve personally ever read, most accurate military romance I’ve read, they put true care into it.

Unlike the rest of the books in the series, this story focuses heavily on internal turmoil and topics that the fmc and mmc must overcome as well as events in the world.

This brings a unique twist to the writing style of this book that I thought was BRILLIANT especially shown in the PTSD scenes.

The FMC was extremely relatable and refreshing, not the typical FMC we see in romance novels lately and get mad at due to the plot being driven due to them being helpless or doing things to “dumb” things. She’s strong, witty, willing to take care of herself and is able to, of course she has things to work through, as we all do but she’s like us!

One thing that is super important to me is the care the author puts into doing their best to being respectful to the military when writing these books. In doing research, in asking questions and trying to make it as accurate as you can in a fictional book and it shows. Thank you. Thank you from so many people who this means a lot to. It’s more impactful than some may know.

What I Should Have Known is a heartfelt romance about Bernie Phillips, a Navy SEAL struggling with survivor’s guilt, and Katalina Fisher, a woman trapped in a life she doesn’t want. After a drunken accident involving a bottle cap, Bernie finds himself drawn to Kat, a fiery, curvy cowgirl who challenges his grief-stricken, reckless behavior.

Kat is also struggling, feeling trapped by her parents’ plans for her, including an arranged marriage to a man she can’t stand. Bernie’s unexpected arrival in her life awakens emotions she’s been suppressing and forces her to reconsider everything she thought she wanted.

The chemistry between Bernie and Kat is electric, with their witty banter adding humor to the emotional weight of their individual struggles. Bernie’s healing journey and Kat’s fight for independence are both touching and inspiring, and the small-town setting—filled with cattle drives, rodeos, and branding days—adds authenticity to the story.

Atkinson does a fantastic job portraying grief, healing, and the courage to embrace love and self-determination. What I Should Have Known is a beautiful, slow-burn romance that shows how love can help us heal from the deepest wounds and give us a second chance at happiness. Highly recommend!

I’ve read the first two installments of this series (Anchors and Eagles) and this third book did NOT disappoint. I swear R.L. Atkinson can pull me out of the worst reading slumps.

I loved the story following the mental health of being a solider and the growth between Bernie and his own personal health. He was strong but his relationship with Kat forced him to really face what he had been running from. With Kat and her also gaining confidence with herself for being plus sized and not letting that stop her in the slightest (what a badass) also having little Mittens as a mascot for the whole book was amazing.

From page one you get hooked in and you’re ready to sob hysterically. There were laughs and things that just made me kick my feet like a teenager. I wish I could read this book for the first time again. I would die for that opportunity. I do wish ONE THING. I wish it was longer 🤣 but honestly that’s how it is with all her books and I know Atkinson can’t write 1,000 page books that’s just crazy. I recommend this book if you’re in any type of slump or just want a fast paced book with a dash of mystery, a drop of spice (diet spice) and a lot of romance 💛

Just as the other books in this series.m, this book was amazing. It will make you laugh one second and cry the next. Bernie, our fun loving explosive expert is in new waters. Not only is he in a new small town Montana but her is grieving his friend and teammate Duncan. He is trying to be his normal self for everyone but just cannot stop blaming himself for Duncan. Then comes in Kat, a fiery sassy cowgirl who did stop a second before putting Bernie in his place. Seeing as she is exactly Bernie’s type, this sparks a romance which is exactly what they would need in each other. Bernie needs someone that understands him, lets him be vulnerable, and willing to fight for him. Kat needs some to have her back as she makes her own choices, supports her, and truly see her as a person and not her family. Coming together not only can they take on the depression that settles but family and small town pressure as well.

I loved this couple so well. The way they fit together perfectly. The fact that just because they found love not everything was perfect again, things still got rough something but I’d also sometime felt better with the one special person!! I can’t wait for more of this world!!

R.L. Atkinson amazing series. I have loved reading the books in this series. These are interconnected standalones that have characters from the other books included, however, you don't need to read them in order, but it does help understand the charater relationships and some of the things happening. Make sure you read the authors content warnings on this one before reading as there are some heavy topics.
In their last mission, the SEAL team lost one of their own. Following the funeral, Bernie and the team honor his memory at the local spot where Bernie meets Kat for the first time....the only problem is he really doesn't remember the bad impression he left. After he travels home to his mom and brothers house, who does he run into again, Kat! What a small world. Only problem is Kat is off limits and Bernie knows he can't do anything long term anyway. But the pull between these two is undeniable. What happens when the guy Kat was supposed to marry, isn't who everyone thinks he is? Will Bernie be able to move past his grief to keep his promised?

“I have figured out that if she demands cuddles, you give them to her or you will get attacked. But then also if she is done with the snuggles you better let her go or she will do the same thing. And she only gives one warning before bringing out the claws. I call it the ‘slap chop’ ’cause first, it’s soft, then we get the danger knives from her,”

I went into this book knowing it was going to be good. Especially since I already read the first two books. What I wasn’t expecting was to be in tears a few pages in. Aside from the tears at the beginning and maybe a few more throughout the book, I absolutely LOVED this book. Bernie definitely deserved his own book after everything that happened in book two! Kat is an amazing character… I love her and she’s perfect for Bernie!! That cliff of emotion that I just jumped off while reading really hit home. RLA has done it again and created another beautiful story I can’t wait to see what’s next in the series!!

ARC Review ✨️

☆Bernie & Katalina☆

Bernie, a Navy Seal, is struggling with survivors guilt after losing his brother. Bernie heads to the bar after the funeral. Katalina just so happens to be at that same bar. Kat has always followed after her parents. She even agreed to have an arranged marriage. That's all about to change.

I'll never get tired of this author and anything she writes. I love and enjoy her stories every single time. This one left me in my feelings while reading. My heart broke for Bernie, I couldn't imagine going through what he had to. There was a really good representation of PTSD, and that was amazing. Kat was highly loveable and also very relatable at times. I really loved her, and I was hoping she would choose Bernie the whole time! Overall, this story was amazing and so beautiful! I highly recommend it🙌🖤

Another 5 start read for me!!! ⭐️ RL Atkinson does not disappoint with this Navy SEAL team!!! I have loved the first two books and this one is now added to that list. I absolutely loved both Bernie and Kat, not only them separately but them together. I LOVE that Kat is the cowgirl and Bernie didn’t have a clue about being on a ranch lol That scene had me cracking up, and after finishing the show Yellowstone, it gave me all the cowboy vibes I wanted 🤠 Bernie’s POV and reading how much he was falling for this sassy, innocent and curvy FMC was perfection! 🫶🏼 I love a MC that loves a curvy girl and wants nothing more then to worship her body and wants her to know how hot she is 🫠 Which I will say I would’ve loved some more spice but regardless I couldn’t put this book down cuz I loved their story, it had me giggling at their banter, kicking my feet at the cutest things, broke my heart at times and that slow burn?! Ugh it was all just so good!!! 🥰 It gave me all feels and I want to talk about so many things but I don’t want to spoil too much 🤫 I can’t wait for the next one to come out so I can continue reading about the lives of this Navy SEAL team!!! ❤️

R.L. Atkinson never disappoints. The third book in the Anchors and Eagles Series is just as good, if not better, than the previous two. It's been an honor to ARC read this series and watch not only the characters' progress but Rianna's writing has shown the most growth.

Rianna writes characters we know, people we might see every day or have traits of ourselves. I have been able to connect with every FMC in this series some way or another. I can see parts of myself in these women, hence making my connection with these books stronger. I love how she writes her MMCs, because I know those kinds of men and am married to one. Her characters are real to me, and I love that I'm able to connect to them easily.

Rianna's writing is the fresh air I need in the ocean of dark romance I read. If she writes it, I'm going to read it. No questions asked. Thank you so much for letting me ARC read this series. I'm already sad the series will come to an end, and there's still more to come.

A cowboy military romance, yes please. I’ll take three.

I think this may be my favourite R.L. Atkinson book in this series. Kat is a take no bs girl and I like that about her. She’s got a great scene of humour and is very kind. I liked how she gave Bernie all kinds of sass.

Bernie, Bernie, Bernie….. I may have a secret ( not so secret) thing for red heads. So he’s got that going for him 🫠🫣. I love his impulsiveness and how he’s actually just a really good guy. I would love to see muffin in her
Cavalier outfit. Pretty please?
R.L.’s writing ranges in the spice department. It’s either kissing and not much else. Some alluding to behind closed doors things happening.
This was probably more of her descriptive books when it comes to shmex scenes.

Also I am looking forward to Fords book!
