I listened to this on audio, the first audiobook I've listened to in quite a while. I'm trying to get myself more used to the format, and I did enjoy this--the voice actor was good for the most part, though some of the voices were a bit grating, likely done on purpose. As for the stories themselves, all of these short stories center around nature and the outdoors and things that go bump in the night. I liked some better than others--the Mothman one was a lot of fun, as was the curiosity shop one. Some were downright eerie and all of them lean more into real horror than campy or silly, which was interesting since it was geared to a middle grade audience.
Wow, this was really good! I love ghost story anthologies for kids and have read dozens over the years. I have a large collection, and I will be adding this one to it. The writing itself is very good, and the endings are a perfect mixed bag of merciful and unflinching. It takes a lot to get someone like me who has read hundreds of short horror stories to hold their breath. I also really appreciated the diversity at the heart of these stories in a genre largely dominated by white men. Anastasia Garcia is a name I will be looking out for in the bookstore!
I will definitely be ordering this book for the junior school library.
This is a fantastic collection of 'spooky' reads which is a great way to introduce horror as a genre to younger readers and engage readers who feel overwhelmed by a novel. These short stories are a great way to get a whole story without having to read a novel. Perfect for reading allowed.
Another amazing anthology of stories from Anastasia Garcia! With more fantastic art and well-researched stories from around the US, I couldn't put this down. And like Ghostly, Ghastly Tales, the cover of this book also glows in the dark. 😁 Reminiscent of Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories, complete with scare ratings on each, this book is perfect for kids of most ages and adults who love the nostalgic feel of the scary anthologies of our youth.
I had read another book similar to this one by the same author and I loved it ♥ The author writes beautifully and her stories are spooky yet enjoyable. I can't wait to see if she writes more books like this <3
I love a good ghost story and this book did NOT disappoint! Keep the kiddos entertained while camping or during sleepovers with this collection of spooks and bumps.
