Loving Reaper - Hiraeth

Rate this book
“What once was, but is now sorely missed, this longing is described as Hiraeth. Originally a Welsh word that describes a feeling that might be familiar to some – deep longing for a place, a person, a home or a time that can no longer be found. An unattainable yearning… And what would we give to hear that voice again, or to feel that warmth, the creaking and purring, everything that can no longer come back to us in its finality. But the more destruction humans cause, the more often we, and they, will feel it.”

“Being missed so deeply is the price for being loved so much” ❤️

As always Jenny Jinya brings us stories of grief, love , life and death in the most poignant and thought provoking manner.
The cartoons are beautiful, funny , heartbreaking, informative and witty in the same breath . These cartoons thematise so many sensitive and emotional topics , but do so in an accessible and thoughtful manner that you can’t help but feel … something. Some stories make me feel sad , some make my heart hurt , some make me laugh whilst others leave me with a sense of deep melancholy. Either way - these stories make me feel .

Overall this edition is a bit more colourful than the previous book, but the artwork is just as stunning and poignant, and we are seeing more interactions between Life and Death. If you follow her web toons this won’t come as a surprise as Life has made more appearances in the last few years. The stories follow the same themes we are used to from the previous edition and thematise animal rights , mistreatment, and abuse with informative paragraphs on relevant matters. This edition focuses a little more of the emotion of grief, but does so in the same sensitive manner we are used to .

One of my favourite funny chapters is “Chapter 12 - Swap” which gives us a ‘tongue in cheek’ insight into the conception of the Platypus and Life’s utter failure as a reaper.
Whilst ‘Ch23 The sequel to “Soon”’ is probably one of the saddest and most heartbreaking chapters in this instalment .

I can’t express how much I love this book. Thank you for sharing Reaper dog and Reaper cat (Ch18) with us , and the “ whoa” moment (Ch19). Thank you for sharing your grief with us ( Ch2, RIP Trixi) and for illustrating a way through grief (Ch “ The Evergrief Forest”).

I cried so hard start to finish. There’s some beautiful pet stories in there that’ll ring familiar to some owners. Losing a pet in a multi-pet home, losing a pet and coming home to all their stuff in the house, losing a pet that never came home after going outside etc.
On the other hand it also tackles animal cruelty subjects for non-pet species as well and I think that’s a beautiful way of seizing the opportunity for spreading an important message - even if those reading these comics are likely not the target audience of the message. Sharks, whales, pigeons, crows… I cried for them all.
The exclusive Evergrief Forest chapter was the hopeful ending I needed. It rings true and hits close to home. It’s been 2 years since I lost my soulmate cat and I still feel lost in the evergrief forest sometimes.
There is also a lighthearted chapter about Life and Death swapping roles for a day and I laughed through my tears.

My only regret is not buying the first book as well when I bought this one.

Dear Isis and Grissly,

this is the second book from wonderful and talented Jenny Jinya, and just like the last one, I have to think of you all the time.
Grissly, you are now gone for 10 years. Even though we had so many fights and you really hated me while I was a child, I mostly remember the time you finally came around and let me cuddle you. In the end you came to me to feed you your last meals. You settled down in my bathroom to die. My mum and I held you while you slipped away. You were so loved, little tiger.
Isis, I see you in every cat that let's me pet them even if we just met on the streets by night. I see you in every animal that smiles at me and seeks my warmth. You were the perfect cat for an exploring young child, and I am so grateful that I learned what it means so care for someone through you. I really miss having you in my bed and cuddling your warm coat. You were so loved, little dummy.

My grief is a scar now, but I will never forget you. and even though I do not believe in an afterlife, I really hope to see you again.
In Love

Yes, it will make you cry, and help deal with grief and sorrow. Feeling hugged by a book, Jenny does it again. <3
