Edward Lee is an American novelist specializing in the field of horror, and has authored 40 books, more than half of which have been published by mass-market New York paperback companies such as Leisure/Dorchester, Berkley, and Zebra/Kensington. He is a Bram Stoker award nominee for his story "Mr. Torso," and his short stories have appeared in over a dozen mass-market anthologies, including THE BEST AMERICAN MYSTERY STORIES OF 2000, Pocket's HOT BLOOD series, and the award-wining 999. Several of his novels have sold translation rights to Germany, Greece, and Romania. He also publishes quite actively in the small-press/limited-edition hardcover market; many of his books in this category have become collector's items. While a number of Lee's projects have been optioned for film, only one has been made, HEADER, which was released on DVD to mixed reviews in June, 2009, by Synapse Films.

Lee is particularly known for over-the-top occult concepts and an accelerated treatment of erotic and/or morbid sexual imagery and visceral violence.

He was born on May 25, 1957 in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Bowie, Maryland. In the late-70s he served in the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division, in Erlangen, West Germany, then, for a short time, was a municipal police officer in Cottage City, Maryland. Lee also attended the University of Maryland as an English major but quit in his last semester to pursue his dream of being a horror novelist. For over 15 years, he worked as the night manager for a security company in Annapolis, Maryland, while writing in his spare time. In 1997, however, he became a full-time writer, first spending several years in Seattle and then moving to St. Pete Beach, Florida, where he currently resides.

Of note, the author cites as his strongest influence horror legend H. P. Lovecraft; in 2007, Lee embarked on what he calls his "Lovecraft kick" and wrote a spate of novels and novellas which tribute Lovecraft and his famous Cthulhu Mythos. Among these projects are THE INNSWICH HORROR, "Trolley No. 1852," HAUNTER OF THE THRESHOLD, GOING MONSTERING, "Pages Torn From A Travel Journal," and "You Are My Everything." Lee promises more Lovecraftian work on the horizon.

Boy, this was a tough one to get through...slightly redeemed by the title story, which was so bizarre that it kinda-sorta made the whole ordeal worthwhile. Kinda. Sorta.

Edward Lee's collections are always very hit-and-miss with me, he's a writer who's written a lot of great short stories but like any author, there are always some stories that are inevitably weaker than others. Haunted House and Other Presidential Horrors has been on my radar for a while now and despite its bizarre synopsis, it intrigues me.

Night of The Vegetables:
When a nuclear reactor has a meltdown, it isn't long before the civilians of the United States are infected by radiation unlike any other. People are beginning to turn into vegetables and the President is upset. But worst of all the President has crabs!

Edward Lee has written a story that is, bizarre, outlandish, and hilariously gruesome. It's a comedy piece that doesn't take itself seriously and honestly, it's such a fun read. I enjoyed this one immensely. 9/10

Secret Service:
She may be a member of the Secret Service, but in the white house, she has the worst job in the world. She has to look after an ex-president with Alzheimer's who spurts out international secrets on the whim. But to keep him calm, she has to give him 'special attention'. But when she stumbles upon a particular secret, her life changes forever.

Edward Lee has written a comedic and gross little story of a poor woman who has to look after an ex-president and give him sexual attention. It's an amusing little story that has a lot to say and criticize about misogyny in the US government and how women aren't always taken seriously because of their looks. It's sad but I'm glad that despite this being a more comedic tale, Lee does shine a harsh reality of how disgusting men can be in a position of power. 8/10

The Room:
President Hilton newly elected finds himself finally in the white house, but he's a truly despicable and tasteless character with a huge ego and no respect for others around him. Reginalds unfortunately has the honor of showing him a secret room, where a well-kept secret is being hidden. Hilton is in for a shock.

Edward Lee's distaste for the US government becomes apparent in this comedic tale. It's a fun story about President Hilton discovering a white house secret while being mocked and humiliated. It's a funny and absurd story that made me chuckle. 8/10

The Hiccup:
It's 1963 and the Soviets have hired an assassin who willingly snipe the political opponent in the next election. However, a simple hiccup is all it can take for disaster to occur.

This is a simple story that is both an amusing and interesting read. The idea of a simple hiccup taking out John F. Kennedy by mistake is disturbingly funny. 7/10

Haunted House:
It has always been said that the White House is haunted but newly elected Josh W. Burnet has never believed in tall tales. He's happy to have taken over as the next president, now that loser Canton is out of the way. But his first few nights are to be the craziest he's ever had. Ghosts, werewolves, vampires, and other supernatural nightmares stalk the corridors. Josh has a decision to make.

Edward Lee has written an engaging haunted house story that is funny, gross, atmospheric, and interesting, even if the plot is outlandish and silly. It's not a story to take too seriously, it's a more comedic take on a haunted house story that just so happens to be set in the white house, but oh boy is it fun. I like how this story is linked to the Infernal stuff as well, with Satan having a strong grip over the presidents that come and go. 9/10

Overall: 41/50

A slim volume of short stories that relate to the U.S. presidency by splatterpunk icon Edward Lee. The characters' misogynistic, dirty-minded, foul-mouthed tendencies are deliberately overdone, creating a humorous effect. In the title story, a newly appointed President discovers past leaders crudely roaming the halls in various undesirable forms. Other favorites involved a dementia-plagued ex-President (seemingly inspired by Ronald Reagan) revealing major secrets to a victimized woman and a story that reveals what really happened with the Kennedy assassination.

A mixed bag of stories which range from the coprophilic to the downright bizarre all connected by the theme of U.S. Presidents (with the serial numbers filed off) from JFK to GWB. A quick read.
