Welcome to Seattle, 2066. A city on the brink of collapse.
There is only one rule. Don't dig up the past.
Dr. Neele is a scientist on the verge of a breakthrough. But a gruesome discovery links her work to a deadly conspiracy and to the brother she lost sixteen years ago.
Her search for answers leads her from the glittering, towering Holster Skywards research lab into the dark, drug-ravaged streets of a city designed to fail.
Neele was told her brother's death was an accident. She is starting to believe it was murder.
Meanwhile, two detectives, Simmons and Marsh, investigate a brutal killing in the city's grimy underworld. They are cynical, seasoned, and usually work cold cases. This one is red hot.
Their case pulls them deep into a web of violence, on a collision course with Dr. Neele and a secret that threatens to tear the city apart.
Neele knows she shouldn't trust anyone. The people who covered up her brother's death are still in power. But she can't let the lies stand.
Their lives are on the line. But in this dying city, the past doesn’t just haunt you. It hunts you.
This book was far better then I was expecting. It was jam packed full of action, but easy to follow as it is set in Seattle in 2066. Things have a futuristic feel but yet is still common enough to understand. Every chapter has a great photo of what area you are in, I thought this was my favorite part (minus Chapter 15 which was gripping). At first I was super confused because there was one character that was talking in first person but there was no name associated with it, but we got to meet Simmons, his partner. That was the part that got me a little confused but then invested because I wanted to know who this first-person narrator was! Shortly after we meet Dr. Nelle and her suit HELPS. I fell in love with HELPS, thought he was hilarious as an AI. As the book went on I just got more into the story as a whole. Great Sci-Fi book!
Fragment by J.L. Litschko was so good!! If you like cyberpunk, dystopian, sci-fi, fast paced crime thrillers that take place in the future then you will love this book.
This is Litschko’s debut novel and it was fantastic. Litschko did such an amazing job with the storyline, plot, and world building. This fast pace, action packed read takes you into a world of political corruption, drug underworlds, and secrets. I was on the edge of my seat as I went on this ride with Dr. Neele, Simmons, and Marsh. This is definitely a book I will be recommending to not only my friends, but to my bookclub as well. Thank you to Love Book Tours and J.L. Litschko for letting read an ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts and opinions.
When starting this book, I did not know what expect, but once I started this one, I could not stop. It sucked me in from the very first chapter. It is set in the year 2066 in a fast-paced dystopian sci-fi world. The story follows Dr. Neele and her search for the truth about the atomic bomb that killed her family. Was it an accident or a deadly human experiment? With the help of two unlikely detectives can they race against time to ensure that this does not happen again? Highly recommend!
Set in the dystopian future of Seattle, 2066, this book was giving Mad Max/Fallout vibes and I loved it!
Detectives Simmons and Marsh are investigating a double murder. Marsh has a special ability of being able to sense someone's last moments - a fragment - just by touching them. The fragment from the murder victim leads the pair after a rare type of ammo. They reach out to underworld contacts and head into off-limits districts in search of clues.
Meanwhile, Dr Neele, a research scientist, finds something unexpected inside her lab. She senses the need to escape, downloading some incriminating files on the way out. She goes on the run, knowing that her old mentor is the only person who can help her now.
The story jumps between the two characters, until eventually they meet and their stories combine.
I loved this book. It was fast-paced, interesting, politically-charged and unexpected.

⚫️J. L. Litschko’s Fragment is an engaging and fast-paced story that skillfully combines the intense suspense of a crime thriller with the intriguing elements of a dystopian sci-fi world. Set in a near-future Seattle in 2066, a city on the verge of collapse, this novel takes readers on an exhilarating journey through a maze of conspiracy, mystery, and the unsettling question of whether the past can ever truly be left behind.
⚫️The narrative follows Dr. Neele, a talented scientist who has dedicated years to her work at Seattle’s Holster Skywards research lab, trying to escape the shadows of her troubled past. Just as she is on the brink of completing a groundbreaking project, she uncovers a shocking revelation that propels her into a perilous situation. What starts as a pursuit of scientific discovery quickly evolves into a deeply personal quest to uncover the truth surrounding her brother's enigmatic death from 16 years ago. Litschko skillfully crafts a narrative that makes Dr. Neele’s internal struggles and emotional journey as captivating as the mystery itself.
⚫️What distinguishes Fragment is its intricate storytelling. As Dr. Neele investigates a long-buried secret linked to her brother’s demise, we also follow two experienced detectives, Simmons and Marsh, as they probe a brutal murder in the crime-ridden Old Medical District. Their inquiry leads them deeper into a complex underworld where every clue seems to divert them further from the truth. Litschko excels at intertwining the personal and professional stakes of both storylines, merging them into a larger narrative about trust, power, and the price of revealing hidden truths.
⚫️The world-building in Fragment is outstanding. Seattle in 2066 is depicted as a city in decline, plagued by corruption, danger, and social unrest. Litschko vividly illustrates a metropolis on the brink, where the specter of collapse looms over every interaction and decision.
" [...] Let no strangers into the city. And if you do, only in pieces... [...]"
"Fragment" by J. L. Litschko is a very engaging science fiction novel with elements of crime and thriller. It presents a very apocalyptic and dystopian atmosphere. Here we move forward and backward in time.
I was amazed by the variety of fonts used in this book. I think it's the first time I've encountered something like this.
Your attention is also worthy of the great illustrations created by Davide Di Donna. They attract attention and perfectly reflect the content of this story.
Here I met, among others:
- Dr. Neele, who wants to discover the truth behind her brother's death. Sometimes the truth is painful. Lots of conspiracies and dangers await her. Will she make it out alive? I liked this character.
- Detectives Simmons and Marsh. They will not be idle either, but will be very busy. They will not be afraid to use firearms. An unsolved case will spiral them into an incredible and dangerous vortex.
The time of this novel is, among others, the year 2066. The setting is, among others, Seattle.
This book is packed with amazing action and twists. I'll tell you right away that it's worth reading to the end. There is no time for boredom here.
Can you save a lot of lives by going back in time? Can you lose yourself by going back in time and fixing the world?
Would you like to go back in time and get rid of war criminals before they became them?
I recommend "Fragment" to all lovers of Sci-fi novels and advanced technology.
I hope that soon we will read another novel by J.L. Litschko on a similar topic. Who will they have to get rid of this time?

The future the author portrays here is descriptive, atmospheric and rich in visuals.
The world building itself is great, you really can imagine the sights, smells, people and places clearly in your mind.
I was very surprised by this book, as the excellent cover design left me wondering what sort of take on science fiction thriller this was going to have, but I loved the cover so had to have a go for it and I am so very glad I did because it was brilliant. From the start, you are pulled completely into the web that the author has created. You will love the main character and her dedication and enthusiasm. The author created.hernwell, giving lots of depth and layers. I really liked her no giving take of things. The future world that the author portrays is done very well. They have put a lot of time and effort into world building and really bringing to life this believable future. The conspiracy mystery really brings to like a feelings of unknown and urgency to the mix, make it riveting to read.
This was one of the books which surprised me so much - didn't realise how much I was going to enjoy this so much. It had a very interesting writing style which challenged me as it was written in a seamless piece of prose and when the author use bold to highlight someone else thoughts on a situation. I can not wait to read the next couple of books in this series and have put in some alerts to make sure that I do not miss the announcement dates for them.
