The Drink Shrink

THE LAUGH-OUT-LOUD SUMMER READ EVERYONE’S TALKING ABOUT!

No time to read? Concentration span of a goldfish? The Drink Shrink is the novel for you!

Told through texts, the Drink Shrink tells the story of one 30-something's efforts to rebuild her life with the help of a cocktail or three. You'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll come away convinced that when life gives you lemons, there's only one sensible solution... put them in your gin!

Getting divorced at 32 wasn’t part of Clodagh’s life plan, but she’s rolling with it – which, in essence, means drinking like a fish and throwing herself into the world of online dating. And what better way to share the hard-won wisdom from all her misadventures than by writing a self-help book offering cocktail-based solutions to life’s most pressing dilemmas?

As she sets about reinventing herself as the Drink Shrink, Clodagh tells herself and everyone around her she’s never been happier. But when her new life in Edinburgh fails to deliver the happiness she seeks, she finds herself questioning if she’s really as over her past heartbreak as she claims to be…

Hilarious and poignant by turns, The Drink Shrink is a must-read for anyone whose life hasn’t turned out quite the way they thought it would.

The Drink Shrink

You know when you read a book and you just know it’s going to be brilliant? This was like that for me.

Clodagh Kelly is going through a divorce and going through the motions that comes with this. Working as a bartender, being a divorcee and questioning her life choices at age 32 may not be where she saw herself, but thats how life goes isn’t it? She decides to write herself a little book as the ‘Drink Shrink’ sharing her wise knowledge, life experience and fabulously crazy cocktail recipes. With some brilliant humour, fantastic characters, and some really bitter real life moments, this is an all round winning book like nothing else out there.

I honestly don’t know where to start…ok no I do, this book is hilarious, it is so unique and cleverly written too. I didn’t realise how sucked into Clodagh’s life until I turned the page and, much to my dismay, the book was finished.

I laughed out loud so much I got a cramp, I had tears rolling down my face when it got real, and I was proud of this character I had never met before…having that much of an effect on readers is so rare and shows true talent by the author.

The format of this book is so interactive and effortlessly brilliant; there is text messages, google search history, food journalling, letters, playlists, cocktail recipes, emails and more.

I hope my review makes some of you go and purchase this book because it was a well earned 5⭐️ read for me.

For adults only! This includes too many life lessons (and adult humour) can’t be sharing them too soon 🤭

There are aspects some may find difficult in this book, so please take care, and if you are unsure, please check first.

📚 Book Review: The Drink Shrink by Zoe McCann 🍸

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

If life gives you lemons, Zoe McCann will teach you to throw them into gin, slap on some sass, and laugh-cry your way through life’s chaos. *The Drink Shrink* is a hilariously moving tale of Clodagh, a 30-something navigating post-divorce life with cocktail wisdom and questionable decisions (as one does).

I *adored* every single character – from Clodagh’s messy but relatable journey to the warm, witty banter with her besties Sarah and Declan. I also really enjoyed the chats with her sister, Abbie and the tense vibes that sometimes were present. Their dynamic reminded me so much of my own sibling chaos – equal parts love and exasperation. It’s like a therapy session… if your therapist encouraged drinking.

The format is genius: texts, emails, playlists, self-help snippets – it’s the ADHD-friendly, hilariously dark novel I didn’t know I needed. (Seriously, it’s laugh-out-loud funny and heartbreakingly poignant, which is a dangerous combo when reading in public.)

Relatable, raw, and ridiculously entertaining, The Drink Shrink is the perfect cocktail of humor and heart. Highly recommend for anyone who’s ever felt like life hasn’t gone according to plan (so, everyone?).

Cheers to Zoe McCann for making me laugh, cry, and consider starting my own cocktail-based therapy practice. 🍹

Clodagh Kelly is trying to adjust to life after her marriage has ended, with support from her sister and her two best friends. Told uniquely through text messages and book excerpts from a cocktail recipe book Clodagh is writing, this is a fun read that's very reminiscent of Bridget Jones and Sex and the City, but with a modern twist.

It took me a while to warm up to it, particularly the text style (my phone overwhelms me lol), but also the main character. I felt Clodagh was initially too selfish to find relatable, but as the novel goes on she goes through a well developed character arc.

The style also fell to the back of my mind after a while, and on reflection, I felt it was actually a real advantage of the novel. The gaps between the conversations actually were fascinating. So much was often said in the silence, and it was the form of the novel that allowed that, even if it took a little while to get used to.

I really tore through this - it's mostly fun and lighthearted but also touches on some very deep subjects throughout. Trigger warnings in advance for suicide and self harm.

I think fans of Beth O'Leary, Emily Henry, and Leanne Slade would enjoy this one.

Fantastic

An unusual way to write a novel but it absolutely works, I couldn’t put it down! It made me laugh out loud at some points and others I wanted to reach into the book and give the characters a hug. Can’t wait to read more from the author. Definitely worth a read.

Real life with a bagful of wit.

A light hearted read about relatable life events. Funny, expressive and above all, the main character can jokingly criticise herself! Loved it!

funny but poignant

The beginning of this book had me tittering then it took a more serious turn but I enjoyed the brutal reality of what life is actually like.

Hilarious, touching and brilliant

This funny, moving and creatively designed book has the vulnerability and wit of Fleabag. Would definitely recommend it to anyone approaching any of the big milestones in life when existential panic starts to kick in. Laughed out loud a lot and came close to tears. Really encapsulates the modern era, with the chaos of the way we present ourselves on different platforms and to different people.
