"I could feel the heat of him on me. I could barely breathe. Parting my lips as my heart thumped, I needed to be closer."

Imagine having to sleep inches from your crush but not be able to touch him because he’s “straight” and has a girlfriend.
_____

CAGE
With NFL scouts watching my every move, the last thing I should be thinking about is Quinton Toro, my awkwardly sexy, genius tutor who makes me think about breaking my headboard. I might fantasize about everything about him at night, but I’ve worked too hard for too long to slip up now.

But if it came down to having him or a career in the NFL, which would I choose? The answer should be obvious, right? Then why can’t I get the lustful way he looks at me out of my mind?

I might be in trouble.

QUINTON
The problem with falling in love for the first time is that it makes you do crazy things like think you have a shot with the chiseled quarterback with rippling abs, who is not only focused on going pro, but is straight and has a girlfriend.

He is the one who insists we spend time together. That’s got to mean he likes me, doesn’t it? Why can’t I figure this out?

And, how is he going to feel when he learns how much trouble comes with being with me? The only thing I can hope is that we can figure out a way to be together. But could we do it without me getting my heart broken again?

This book is partnered with BookishBoyfriend[.]com where you can have steamy chats with the characters of this high-heat MM romance.

If the plot and characters weren’t enough, the spanish translation killed me dead.
It was REALLY bad, bad fan fiction bad, but it was entertaining and I laughed so hard throughout it (at scenes not intended to be funny, which is precisely the problem)

Things I expected... a lighthearted romance.
Things I did not expect.... genetic engineering and a mystery subplot that took over the second half of the book.
Add in one really unlikeable MC and this was not a book I enjoyed.

I did really like the other MC even if I spent half the book really confused as to whether I picked up a romance or a science fiction or a true crime novel. There was absolutely nothing in the book synopsis that indicated it was anything other than a contemporary romance.

recycled first paragraphs in multiple books by the same author? Gender-swapped, genre-swapped, but nearly identical.

No, thanks.

I think I've finally done it. I've found the worst-written book a person can find on the internet.

I'm not convinced that this wasn't written by AI. But then I realized that AI wouldn't write something this wooden or strange. If this was written by some villager in a third-world country who learned about American college athletes via cheap books and a 90s sitcom, then that would make sense and I'd feel a bit mean. Alas, I do not think this is the case.

I think it is simply terribly written on top of straight-up weird characters and plot.

I DNF’d at 67%. While there is an intriguing plot that develops in the second half, but by the time I was getting into it, the writing became very cringe worthy. The steamy scenes had me rolling my eyes most of the time and that isn’t the response you want. The flow of the book is very bad. The pacing in the first half is like molasses, then you get to around 48% and it goes to warp speed. I simply didn’t have the desire to get all the answers because I couldn’t get past the writing. 🙈

So much potential that could have been readable with a good editor.

okay, i had such a rollercoaster reading this book.

i started it and did not enjoy the writing style at all. it really took me out of the story and it just seemed so clowny. i wanted the same characters and the same story but written by a more capable author. then i stopped reading this book for a loooong time and picked it up again a few days ago when i wanted an easy read i had already started. tell me why it felt like i picked up a whole different book. it still wasn’t great, but the writing style was not nearly as bad as i thought it was originally. i don’t know if that’s because i started this book originally immediately after finishing another book, so the different writing style was very jarring, but either way it wasn’t as distracting this time.

at the end of the day, was this author great? no. the plot was kind of crazy (but i was living for it), the characters made such rash decisions sometimes that felt out of character with everything they had just said in their internal monologue, and it’s so cringy to me when people respond “wow!” in dialogue with exclamations like that.

however, i really enjoyed the love story in this book. i thought the characters were very cute and i felt bad for the pressures they both were facing, even if they were a bit odd. i think that they complemented each other really well and i loved their dedication to making it work. cage was very hot and i would take a man like him in a heartbeat, and quin was so adorable and i loved how much he cared about cage and helping him solve the mystery of his past. the mystery was very entertaining too, even if it was slightly unrealistic.

ultimately, though, i still think this story could have been so much better in the hands of another author. the dialogue was sometimes odd and i did not like some of the decisions the characters made that seemed out of character purely for the sake of conflict to fuel the plot. like when cage just didn’t text quin for five days after they came back from a weekend trip where they officially became boyfriends? i feel like that made no sense and was so out of character. and we were reading it from cage’s point of view and even HE didn’t know why he was doing it, so like why did the author make him do it??? i feel like cage was so much better as a person and boyfriend then the author allowed him to be in some parts of this story. most of the time he was great but occasionally he did very out of character things just for the sake of the plot and i hated that.

will i be reading the next book in this series though? yes, yes i will.

2.5 stars

Was this book interesting? Very. Do I think my 5th graders could have written it better? Yes. That didn’t stop me from tearing through it and immediately downloading the next in the series, however.
The jock/nerd premise was familiar and expected- no surprises there about what was holding the couple back- but I very much was intrigued by Cage’s other “problem” and that is what kept me reading.
I gave this book 2.5 stars primarily for the writing. Everything felt rushed. Things that would have taken a complete chapter in other books took only a paragraph in this one. It felt a little like word vomit, like whatever was in the author’s head just made it on to the page with no editing.
Very good premise, just needs fine tuning.

Please Don’t Waste Your Time

I wish I could get mine back from reading this super unrealistic train wreck (Yes, I know this was a work of fiction). I am extremely disappointed. Both main characters were …..(I am sorry but I can’t find any words to describe this mess). Just save your time and money on something else.

I was very disappointed. Not only were the characters acting like teenagers even if they aren’t. Weird plot, cringey dialogue and characters that just didn't make sense. Plus, I am not against smut or anything in books but please for the love of god was this BAD and instead of ~steamy~ made you wanna hide. I had hoped to get a new series to read but nope.

I finished this book because i needed to know how this story was going to end, not because i wanted to know.

this story zigged, zagged, zigged, zupped all over the place. went from romance, to mystery, and back and forth.

this was definitely a plot driven book, not a character driven story…

This book is so weird. It was like a romcom book for 1/3 but then becomes like a mystery/detective book for the rest. But I also felt like I was having a manic episode because the characters were like “I want a life together” after meeting briefly for the first time and then they broke up for virtually no reason. And one of the guys has a girlfriend who he never sees/is maybe a lesbian but it’s like assumed? And I think the author made too many drops in the plot so it didn’t really make any sense.

OMG!! I LOVED this story! It's sweet as we watch two college students meet and become friends, then they discover and track a big mystery, just a wonderful tale. Of course there is sadness and pain, your heart will ache for sweet, gentle Quin. My first with this author, I'm hoping to get the short extra that follows this story.

kind of disappointed but not at all surprised.

I’ll be honest. A big reason I picked up this book was because of all the cute tik tok edits giving the books overall vibe.
I’m a big fan of sport themed books and even more so of the jock/nerd trope.
That’s about surmises where my love for this book begins and ends sadly.

Within the first couple chapters this book almost became a DNF. I had to push myself to finish it and found myself rolling my eyes at multiple occasions at the ridiculousness of it all.

For one- I really can’t stand instant love stories. I don’t logically see how meeting a random 6’2” brown haired dimple having football player for all of 30 minutes has you suddenly ready to walk down an aisle. Add on top of that there’s this random theme of our nerd Quinton supposedly being a super genius due to being the first genetically modified child of 2 men with the help of his parents female partner.

All of this boils down to an instant love bomb situation, with turbulent emotions from 2 men that honestly don’t seem that great of a fit together. The play has enough holes in it that I feel like I was left missing 1/3 of the story. Then you end it all with a rushed ending and a half assed set up for the next book focusing on cages brother.

If you enjoy rushed romance, stunted dialogue, emotionally constipated young adults with a hint of sports in it- you might enjoy this book more than I did.

CORNY..
First of all, CAGE IS A STUPID NAME. Instant crush/love right from the beginning. I don't mind instant love, but this was poorly done. I felt like I was reading fanfiction written by a 15 year old.
Cage and Quin both are annoying, going back and forth saying they love each other but can't be together because their futures don't aline. If you love someone, you at least talk and try to figure out if it will work. There was no communication, and the story line is choppy. I feel like the author never finishes a thought and then jumps around way too much!
I only continued to read because I'm nosey and needed to find out what happened to Cage as a child. Spoiler, it was not worth it. All the pain and turmoil I had to go through WAS NOT WORTH IT!
The premise was good, but it was executed terribly. I don't normally hate on books. This book I'm definitely hating on.

“Era a minha escapatória”

Quin é um “super gênio” que agora que tá começando a conhecer o mundo.

Cage é a estrela do time de futebol americano da universidade.

Tudo começo com uma tutoria e uma selfie rsrs.

•Menções honrosas•

LOU melhor amigo do Quin e um querido. Sério queria muito um livro só dele. Entrega tudo. Me manteve presa no livro do começo ao fim.

I did like cage handling everything to helping Quinton interact with ppl. Quinton is the smartest person in the world but he wants a new seen in Tennessee until a jock sweeps him up. Then turn I round. Then coming back they go find his biological family and they break up but cage is so out of tube of when comes and goes running after his man. I like the story it did make me feel like I was in a fairly tale'!!!

Storia non male. Interessante la sottotrama anche se non è stata sviluppata benissimo. Qualche refuso (trascurabile) e alcuni errori di traduzione (non trascurabile) che rendevano le frasi senza senso.

Quin is me, but make it a tragic high school
romance: academically gifted, socially
awkward, and absolutely obsessed with the
charismatic idiot who come in and mess
everything up. Still, I couldn't help but enjoy
it.

Honestly reads a bit like bad fanfiction. Also the plot and situations changes midway and not for the better. Bad grammar and editing errors are also pretty prevalent in the book.

Not bad. Lots of skimming. I going detail,, these are my notes Not really a review...Quin was a shy guy who was only friends with his roommate. His roommate wanted him to get out and meet someone and so to prove that he could he went to a frat party celebrating a football win for their university. Quin figured he'd get proof by taking a couple selfish with random people and go read at the library and pass the time. When he gets there he regrets it but sees a couple people hanging outside, sees one guy by himself on his phone and he goes up and asks for a selfie. Said guy asks why he would want a selfie with him and he explains. Turns out he is the star quarterback and ends up getting invited to go into the party and get introduced to actual people. Introduces himself as Cage and they have fun at the party, Cage has to go and Quin wants to leave too. Ends up they are going to the same place so he offers Quin a ride. Thinking that Cage might be interested in him, he invites him up, but as he does so, Tasha walks out and gets introduced to Quin as Cage's girlfriend. Devastated but gets a selfie taken in the end. Tasha is Cages beard. Cage is destined to be in the NFL so hides that he is bi/gay. Cage is so busy with football that he is neglecting at class that interferes with his practice. The professor will not accommodate him. When he shows up for class it turns out Quin is in the class. Cage is happy to see him. Quin is confused since he is getting mixed signals. Cage asks if he will be his tutor. They start hanging out. Both falling for each other. Cage has a bad home life, his father is a drunk. One time Cage asks Quin to go over to his house so they can study. When he does, Quin realizes that Cage is adopted based on his dimples and how his rare dimples have to be hereditary and his father didn't have them. Perception was on of the gifts he was born having as he is the first person created by 2 men. He has 2 fathers and a woman helped make him. He is gifted. Cage is confused about it but they let it go. At Cages football game, he gets injured and breaks his leg, out of the running for the NFL draft. He's not that upset about it, his father is. His father threatens Quin to never shows his face again, threatens his family So he leaves. Cage te,ls his father he doesn't want to play football any more. His father gets mad and packs his things and leaves without a goodbye. Cage tracks down Quin and tells him about his father leaving, Quin and Cage get into a relationship. They then begin a quest into looking into his mothers death to see if he was lied to and she's around. They go and find small hospital in an unknown town. Discovers he has a brother and he was indeed kidnapped as a baby. His mother was told he was dead. With Cage believing Quin is destined for greatness based on who he is and what is expected of him, Cage breaks up with Quin. One of Quins fathers shows up when he ,earns of Quins heartbreak and convinces Quin to go back home to New York. Cages brother wants Cage to go back to Quin and school. Cage goes looking for Quin, runs onto the tarmac trying to get to him. They say their I love yous and reunite. Cage graduates and now they are on a mission to find out who is actual father is. That will be next book.

I was so sad I didn’t love this book. I was all in for the first half. It took a wildly unexpected turn and I was all about it. Then things went off the rails for me. Quin has a distinct personality and quirky way of thinking and we met new characters that seemed to mimic him too closely and phrases became repetitive. I began to question if the author thought the readers are dumb or if they didn’t notice how often things were repeated. The chain of events at the end almost made me DNF the book at the resolution.
I would break the book down like this:
First 50% - four and half stars
50-75% - three stars
75-90% - two stars
90%-end - half a star
I will fully admit that I’m very picky about endings and I can think a book is five stars until the resolution and then it’s ruined for me.

In the beginning I love Cage and Quin so much. They are fun, flirty and everything is new and exciting. I wanted this to be an epic love story but I don’t like it when another person has to tell someone that they shouldn’t let go of love. If you can’t figure out for yourself that love is worth sacrifice and fighting for, then you don’t understand love. It’s the hill I’m willing to die on in terms of a romance novel.

Me gusto, bastante.
El segundo libro también pinta bien, pero me gusto como termino este libro. Veré si leo los demás, a demás de ver si los encuentro en español. O simplemente los encuentro.

What the actual F…

I should have just DNF’d this book but I plowed through. I didn’t understand what the crap was happening. You’re a genius but not “that” kind of genius? What does that mean and the suspenseful drama was not suspenseful or dramatic. The dad spends 22 years building this kid up for football then leaves? Why take the baby? What happened? Do we get that? No. We get “Oh, I found my mom and now we are a family. It’ll all be alright.” WHAT?!? I couldn’t wait for this shit show to end.

Great story

If you had told me, prior to reading this, that a M/M romance set in East Tennessee would be one of my favorites ever. I have told you that you were mad. Would I have been wrong. It seems that great storytelling transcends place and prejudice. Part romance but part mystery as well Serious Trouble is fun, deep, delightful and heartwarming.

Great read.

This was such a great read, I loved how nerdy and unsure Quin was and Cage was so opposite- confident, sporty and, straight?? Together they were perfect, totally balancing each other out. Really felt for Cage with his family situation but so wanted to thump him when he did what he did with his family! Looking forward to reading more in the series.
