Part of Houghton Mifflin's "Invitations to Literacy"/"Watch Me Read" series, 'Great Frogs' is a charming children's picture book at a 1.3 reading level.

It throws the reader right into the action of an elementary school art classroom, as Ben, Maggie & Robbie ask their teacher Mr. Best to get down their pads so they can make frogs. He leaves questions of design & composition up to the artists & they go at it, showing off and comparing frogs during the process.

The illustrations by Kathleen Collins Howell are fantastic, especially with respect to the evocative and realistic faces of the children, so delightfully excited to be creating art.

Mr. Best is an inspiring example of a positive black male role model, exclaiming "Great frogs!" every chance he gets and culminating the activity with a bulletin board of student work featuring each child's creation.

At only 8 pages with just a sentence or two (10-20 words) per page, this is a short and easy read for beginning literacy. But it is realistic fiction and of high interest to elementary-age students who surely experience similar events in their real life.
