Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, Lady Mallowan, DBE (née Miller) was an English writer known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, particularly those revolving around fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. She also wrote the world's longest-running play, the murder mystery The Mousetrap, which has been performed in the West End of London since 1952. A writer during the "Golden Age of Detective Fiction", Christie has been called the "Queen of Crime". She also wrote six novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. In 1971, she was made a Dame (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to literature. Guinness World Records lists Christie as the best-selling fiction writer of all time, her novels having sold more than two billion copies.
This best-selling author of all time wrote 66 crime novels and story collections, fourteen plays, and six novels under a pseudonym in romance. Her books sold more than a billion copies in the English language and a billion in translation. According to Index Translationum, people translated her works into 103 languages at least, the most for an individual author. Of the most enduring figures in crime literature, she created Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple. She atuhored The Mousetrap, the longest-running play in the history of modern theater.
Most of the Miss Marple novels are wonderful, if a little over-packed. Most of the short stories are dreadful, hackneyed, slipshod. The Kindle Unlimited version I read was a disaster for formatting: no way to tell even in what novel you were reading, but much worse, the paragraphing was so distorted that dialog would be grouped with one character's name when it belonged to someone else, line breaks fractured the sense of the story, etc.... Find another option to Kindle Unlimited for the Miss Marple novels and skip the short stories, I think.
I had never read Agatha Christie before; however, I have recently started reading mysteries. Miss Marple's ability to deduce human behavior was an interesting perspective. I really enjoyed her character.
I don’t know what I as expecting from this- but I often found myself zoning out (which is crazy because they are short stories). Too often I felt like they just ended and questioned if I even had a clue of what happened because I’d felt abrupt.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this collection of the Miss Marple stories. Each story was cleverly contrived, with no detail missing. Agatha Christie is an amazing story teller and her characters are delightfully drawn. I highly recommend this collection!
This a delicious visit to the past with Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple. Each story features clearly described characters with a unique puzzle that I challenge the reader to solve with Miss Marple.
Missing pages and chapters, books are not clearly indicated, confusing organization, poorly proofread. Not recommended, try a different compilation. finite!
Yes, it reflects a different time, and yet still very much up-to-date mysteries. So well written, with well drawn characters and plots. Very enjoyable to read!
Christie’s stories, as written, are best. I hate it when filmmakers, including ITV for BBC when they were wrote endings to change the killer or to add characters or turn characters into lesbian couples or change ending. Agatha Christie’s endings were always the best. Networks, It’s NOT her story if you change it!
