"At the Waterfall," is a steamy multiracial forced proximity romance.
4/5 - This was such a fun and spicyyyy romance! I love reading about forced proximity and this one was written perfectly!! Can’t believe this author hasn’t written a million books already! - I usually don’t enjoy magical realism in romances but I really loved it in this one because it felt somewhat believable in a way. If you want to read a book about soulmates, this is the perfect one for you. - Felt like so much happened in this story! I was never bored. There were times where the spice was more than expected, but I can definitely see myself continuing this series!
Take a shot everytime they call each other baby. This book was okay. It took a bit for me to get into it, but once I got into it, I started enjoying it a bit. Sure a lot of the dialogue was cringe, and I do mean A LOT. MC referring to himself as white chocolate during their first meeting, kind of gag inducing. My face probably has new wrinkles for everytime I physically cringed reading some of these lines.
How do I feel about the characters? I got annoyed by Mia- quite frequently. She was most childish. I wasn’t bothered by her being a crier, I’m a crier, I got overly annoyed with her approach to things. I kept screaming, “are you not a bloody adult?” Ugh.
Then Jake, first of all, Jake needs therapy, okay. Lots of it. I did like that he started making the effort but, baby (take a shot) get some therapy. The side characters were never fully fleshed out enough for me to be invested in the romance or whatever they had going on in their personal lives. They existed though, so there’s that.
I liked the process of Mia’s writer’s block and how she worked through and even the process of her searching for an agent to publish her book. Clearly was an author insert, but it made me connect to the character. Perhaps because it felt like the author’s emotions bled onto the pages? Not sure, but I enjoyed that behind the scene, if you will.
It did start to drag and get a bit droll, but it wrapped itself up neatly. I probably won’t be rereading it in the future, but I definitely enjoyed it enough that it’s not a book that I’ll forget about.
Side note, a major pet peeve of mine is when my MCs sleep with other people. Even offscreen. (Offpage???) it gave me the major ick for Jake who was already on thin ice with me.
I must say I did enjoy the chemistry between the MCs and they had lots of cute moments together. They were thoughtful and they did give that they were in love with each other, so 3.5 stars from me.
And one more thing, then I can be done. The spicy scenes had no foreplay and they made me scream. Loudly. Just wham, straight to it. That drove me ballistic because there were SEVERAL spicy scenes. You’d think one of them would have some foreplay, but nooooo. Just straight to the thrusting. And Mia had such a juvenile reaction to his size. I could not help but roll my eyes. Constantly. Still, the book was a good read (unintentional goodreads verbiage) and I enjoyed the epilogue.
I was so fortunate to be a part of this books beta team. It’s a very mountain side vacation vibe read, with a magical waterfall, a writer FMC and an adventurer MMC. The fact that this is literally an opposites attract is just 🤌🏽💋
Also the writer does do justice to her blurb of telling us that we will love the blonde MMC.
It’s just such a simple vacation romance with a little bit of magic sprinkled in.
I did wish that there was more of the magic, and of their past reincarnation but that’s just me because I am always looking for world building and lore.
The book does have some spice but as a non spice reader I just skimmed over it.
Overall it’s a pretty good palate cleanser if you’re looking for a book that will just refresh you.
This book was a letdown. Though I did appreciate the concept of star-crossed lovers reconnecting through their descendants. Unfortunately, the execution fell short. The perspectives from the great-grandparents lacked depth, as their scenes felt disjointed and poorly misplaced throughout the book. By the time Mia and Jake realized they might be mirroring their great-grandparents' story, it felt like an afterthought rather than a meaningful revelation.
Additionally, I don’t like this authors writing style. It’s borderline Wattpad material which didn’t resonate with me. But, if you’re looking for something light and unserious I guess this would be the book for you.
At the Waterfall is a nice, lighter romance starring two strangers and one cabin.
Jake, who is self described " white chocolate" is VERY cocky and not in the mood for love. He does however get around, making a point to never sleep with the same person twice. In fact- he NEVER sleeps over at all, can't catch feelings if you don't stick around.
This changes when he meets Mia, his roomie in the single cabin. A writer who is trying to complete a task as her mothers last wish.
These spunky control freaks have some nice banter, and there's a nice little twist to their families histories thrown in. It feels very freshman in the writing style, but I enjoyed it overall.
Thank you to the author and Torch lit for a chance to read and review in exchange for my honest opinion.
⭐️ARC REVIEW⭐️ Thank you to the author for an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review.
“Like love, trees whose branches have grown so close they intertwine, two hearts can fuse together, inseparable and forever changed by the other existence."
This was the cutest romance! I thoroughly enjoyed the love story between Mia and Jake. Mia is such a relatable character in terms of her overthinking about her feelings and situation with Jake, the panic attacks, and the real emotions on trying to figure out and find her purpose in life. I loved the moody and grumpy trope, I enjoyed Jake's constant flirty comments to Mia and their banter was cute and hilarious at the same time. Both Mia and Jake's journey on addressing / learning to cope with some personal issues was relatable and felt very real. Their inner dialogue within their POV chapters added a lot to the story so the reader could fully understand why they said and acted the way they did in certain situations. Also I appreciate Jake always being honest and upfront on what he was thinking!
I will say the thing I loved most was the Forest POV, this by far was the best idea ever. This POV added a magical / a well rounded view of the story and what the root of the story is about... Love. The way the author used similes and metaphors to describe the waterfall and the scenery around where the waterwall was located was perfect. The author does a stellar job with using imagery to make the reader see the waterfall and see how the two characters feelings and relationship impacted the weather surrounding them, in a way.
The only thing I will say is the transition between the different timeframes from the current to a few months later caught me off guard, I do think there could have been a smoother transition from when the characters were in a different part of the year. Other than that I loved this story a lot.
“I believe that their souls intertwined with love would find their way back to each other seeking the happy ending they deserve ”
This was the cutest spicy romance that will have you in your feelings at times. Jake and Mia are both dealing with past trauma’s and grief of losing a parent each one handles things differently.
Mia is all about the fall and finding that true love and Jake is about control and doesn’t believe in love complete opposites but completely right for each other. The way the Forest POV from the past to Jake and Mia’s present flowed so beautifully. The side characters definitely have me hoping for their stories we get just enough of a tease to have us waiting for more.
This story will have you giggling, blushing, crying and every feeling imaginable. There are so many great parts I want to talk about but I won’t spoil the experience and just leave you with add to TBR or read immediately.

~Quote~ 🩵As if all we need is each other right now to help mend our broken pieces even if it’s just for tonight.
I thought “At the Waterfall” was a sweet story. I enjoyed the concept of these two characters destined to be together and needing to find their way back to each other. I love stories like this. Author Smardline S. delivered it in a way that wasn’t too confusing, using the past and present timelines, the slight paranormal elements of the necklaces, and the pathway to the waterfall.
I liked how the significance of the waterfall was referenced throughout the story as Mia and Jake’s relationship builds. Readers who look for an FMC with a curvier and fuller figure can expect Jake to love Mia’s body. Mia is also positive about her body. Though their relationship is bumpy, and both characters have stuff to work through, I liked that they took their time to get there.
“At the Waterfall” was an entertaining read. It was a sweet romance with several steamy scenes. I’ll be keeping an eye out for this author.
As more of a dark romance and thriller reader, I realize every now and then you need a book to cleanse your palette. That’s what this book did for me. The romance was definitely romancing. The opposition of Jake’s emotional unavailability and Mia’s lover girl personality were so realistic. The perfect personification of anxious and avoidant attachment styles.
But despite their individual traumas, Jake and Mia’s summer romance left me blushing, giggling, and shedding a few tears. I mean, is it even a good romance if it doesn’t make you shed at least one tear?! Their separation, the journey back to each other, and then realizing they were soulmates was just *Chef’s kiss*
Thank you to Smardline for giving me an arc in exchange for an honest review. I loved this book, the chapters in the past were really well written and I felt like I was there with the characters. I loved the nicknames Mia and Jake had for each other, the spice was on another level too! I loved the fact that Mia could speak French and her journey with her writing, it felt realistic and us authors can relate to the highs and lows that come with it.
I am excited for the author and what she will write next as she has created loveable characters and beautiful scenes.
This was such a sweet and steamy summer fling multiracial forced proximity story between a golden retriever mmc rock climber that knows how to talk smooth 🌶️ and a black cat fmc writer/author. Such lovely little details of fmc being a reader and mmc embracing and encouraging that. He was so sweet with the things he did for her , even of they did start off on the wrong foot. The history of their story goes deeper than meets the eye. The waterfall's magic did its wonders for them. The Forest's POV , i need more of it .

This was such a cute romance! I really enjoyed the love story between Mia & Jake. I loved the grumpy and sunshine trope (my favourite trope). Mia is such a relatable character, about her feelings and situation with Jake, the panic attacks, and trying to find her purpose in life. Jake's flirty comments to Mia and their back and forth was cute and funny at the same time. Both Mia and Jake have their own personal issues to deal with in the book.
The side characters definitely have me hoping for their stories especially Mia’s best friend.
There are so many great parts i can review but I don’t want to spoil the experience add to TBR or read immediately!
I’m so glad I gave this book a shot. I almost DNF’ed it when I found out there were some magical themes but I’m glad I opened it back up a stuck with it. I actually believe in reincarnation and that nature is powerful so this was perfect for me. Jake and Mia are stuck in a cabin together and they go from not being able to stand each other to friends to friends with benefits to lovers. This is a story of 2 fated lovers finding each other in every lifetime. I wish this was a movie. I loved this so so much.
Wow! I am just impressed by this beautiful story. I was expecting just a typical romance and I was blown away. The touch of magic added to this wonderfully written story making it unique and unforgettable. Mia is the cutest FMC that is strong and engaging even when she doesn’t even know it at times. Jake is the handsome, flawed but so sweet with a touch of drama MMC. I definitely recommend this book.
The dialogue was cringe. He called her “Moonie” which was even more cringe. He didn’t even eat her out. There was no foreplay whatsoever. It was just “wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am” every time they had sex which was many a times. What a selfish man 😴🛌🏿 And to make it worse, he didn’t even stay celibate during their separation and his excuse was that he was drunk and he only did it bc he missed her. What a logic
Jake and Mia’s story is cute. There’s tension and immediate attraction and forced proximity, all the good things lol. Where this one lost me, was in the other parts of the book.
Mia is taking time to figure out her life. Torn between her fathers expectations and desires for her future and her own passions. Juggling all that, along with her grief over losing her mother, she decides to take advantage of her mothers last gift to her and spend the summer at a cabin, away from everything, and give herself the space she needs to explore.
Jakes father passed away, and he feels guilty. Guilty over their strained relationship. He left Jake and his mother, turning his back on them. But now his mother has asked for help. Help running his fathers business. A world he never wanted to be involved with in the first place. But he can’t let his mom down.
Two people, accidentally booked for the same cabin, neither one of them backing down. Sparks flying everywhere ☺️
There is just too much happening in this story, in my opinion. There is the story of Jake and Mia, a Rom com. Then there are chapters from the POV of the forest, fantasy. Then there are chapters about another couple in the early 1900s, historical fiction. There’s also elements of fates soulmates and magic. There is forbidden love, past trauma, anxiety issues, dealing with death and grief, and of course an added revelation about Jakes father. Then, at about the 65% mark, we have an entire change of venue, a new male character, and a quasi-love triangle that just felt completely unnecessary.
I really didn’t like the part where Mia gets jealous. Considering she told Jake she had a boyfriend, she had absolutely no right to be jealousy, and absolutely no right to “take it out” on Jake.
I also did not like the part in France with Luc. It felt forced, unnecessary, and just 🙄.
I enjoyed the multiple POVs, that’s my fave in a Rom Com. I liked the forced proximity and Jake and Mia’s banter. I liked the chemistry, which was there!! I just wish that the author chose to focus a bit more on this and the backstory, rather than throwing all that they did into the story. It was too much.
Forced proximity Anxiety rep Alternating timelines Multiple POVs Banter Dealing with grief Finding your place
This book is the perfect mix of tension, romance, and personal growth! Jake and Mia couldn’t be more different—he’s a thrill-seeking climber with a strict no-strings rule, and she’s a writer looking for peace and healing. Forced to share a cabin for the summer, their clashing personalities lead to hilarious moments (like Mia’s no-noise-before-8-AM rule being broken by Jake’s blender). But as they spend more time together, their frustrations turn into something deeper.
Their chemistry is undeniable, with sweet moments by the waterfall and soft touches that make it clear this is more than just a fling. Jake’s struggle to confront his fears and Mia’s willingness to risk her heart make for a heartwarming, emotional read. If you’re into slow-burn romance with characters who push each other to grow, you’ll love this one! Perfect for a laid-back weekend read.
I fell in love with this beautiful love story. Two people randomly booking the same cottage and the moment they meet they feel like they’ve known each other. The author weaves in a beautiful enchanted - magical storyline that pulls you in as you follow the journey of Mia and Jake. The chemistry is immediate but one wants love in a relationship while the other one believes best to avoid love in any relationship. So they decide to spend the summer being friends with benefits (what could go wrong 🤭) I love the duel Point Of View of Mia and Jake allowing the reader to understand their vulnerabilities, what pushes them and what ultimately brings them to some hard decisions. At the waterfall it’s not just a romance it’s a love story through generations that will tug at your heart strings and make you laugh a little too. I have to say The epilogue - wow it gave me goosebumps💞 If you’re looking for a summer read, or something to take on a holiday, I highly recommend At the Waterfall Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this arc and provide a review for an endearing love story.
This was such a sweet read. It had such an interesting concept that I’ve yet to see in a romance book that made me so intrigued! I liked these characters a lot and their love for each other was so beautiful 🩵
Don’t get me wrong it’s a cute story really I just was slightly (more than slightly) annoyed with the main conflict in the story like bro tortured himself and her for what because he doesn’t “believe” in relationships like I don’t know it was just really annoying and unrealistic but it was still a cutesy story I just wouldn’t read again and would only recommend it to someone who likes super cheesy love stories
At The Waterfall is a close-proximity, strangers-to-lovers romance about two people who discover they were meant to be together. Mia, an introverted aspiring writer grieving her mother’s death, hopes to find her own voice-and perhaps love. Jake, an expert rock climber, is on the run from love due to the deep trauma of his past.
I loved the development of both of the MCs in this book. It was really cute and very spicy and I liked that the story felt very complete, especially with the backstory of the secret lovers that intertwines with their love story.
I loved the emotional moments, especially when Jake opened up about his feelings were heartwarming and resonated with me.
Overall, I enjoyed Mia and Jake’s story and look forward to reading more from this author.
At the Waterfall is book 1 in Smardline Sufra’s 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 series. I could not wait to read this book, and I am so happy that I got the opportunity to do so because it was SO GOOD!
In the story we meet Jake and Mia. Both are young adults who are at an impasse. They have both lost a parent and are trying to navigate life while dealing with pass hurt and pain.
When we first meet Mia, she is dealing with the sudden loss of her mother. She has dropped out of medical school and wants to pursue a career in writing. After discovering a box left by her mother, Mia goes on a journey of self-discovery. She is given one summer to figure out what she wants to do with her life, and she ends up going to the small town of Pearl Mountain, Vermont. There she meets Jake who has lost his father after a car accident. Jake has returned to Pearl Mountain to help his mother with their family hotel that is now in decline after his father’s death. Due to a set of crazy/mysterious circumstances, the two are find themselves sharing a cabin and enemies to turn to lovers and sparks begin to fly. Will commitment-adverse Jake let down his walls and allow love to blossom or will he lose out on his soulmate forever?
Mia and Jake were such a cute couple. I went through an array of emotions reading this book. From sadness when they discuss the death of their parents, to anger as it relates to Jake and his relationship with his father and another character (don’t want to spoil it), to laughter, to happiness! You will get it all in this book. The author did a wonderful job with these characters. They were relatable characters with real emotions and imperfections. Though Jake wanted to be with Mia and she with him, they both had to deal with real life issues that had them doubting their ability to make each other happy. The chemistry between these two were fire! Once they got going, things got SPICY! Jake loved him some Mia and I really enjoyed their chemistry and friendship.
For me, this story really hit close to home. As a Haitian, I could really relate to Mia as far as the expectations that were put on her by her father. Growing up in a Haitian household, I understood why Mia felt the way she did as far as her career and just the weight that was placed on her shoulders and the expectation of perfection from her parents. She felt like she could not be her real self. She could not follow her dreams of being a writer because as she said, most Haitian parents want you to either be a doctor, a lawyer or a nurse. In addition, it was great to see the representation of not only the Haitian culture through the meals (i.e. Haitian pasta) that Mia made, and through the language spoke in the book, but also the representation of the French culture when she went to visit her grandmother in Paris. The world building in the story was done very well.
Though this was a really great story, and I enjoyed Jake and Mia’s story, I just wish there was a little more as it relates to and the mystery of the waterfall and the emerald necklaces. That part of the story was just so interesting and magical, and I just wanted a little bit more of it. Also, the time jumps and transitions were a little distracting. I had to go back and re-read a few times to make sure I knew exactly where I was in the story.
I just want to note that these things did not take away from the overall story. It was a great story, and I really enjoyed reading it. To me, it was a quick read (I was able to read it all in just one day). Once I started, Jake and Mia’s story was so good that I did not want to stop. I would definitely recommend it!

This book placed the biggest spot in my heart, I loved every single second of being able to be apart of this story. These two were the absolute cutest in every slightest way, They showed compassion and sweet love. I loved all the nature and fresh feelings coming from this book. Adding this book to my TBR was no mistake and no regrets AT ALL!!!
Mia, who's dedicated, hardworking, and sassy, loves to get under one specific man' skin, Jake. Mia is literally the most adorable woman ever!! Reading about how she wants her coffee, her cute shirts(read about this to see how freaking cute they are) and her passion for writing was EVERYTHINGG!! Being able to see how she handles certain situations throughout the story was woman POWERRR, how shes able to overcome her challenges dealing with health was so relatable and inspiring to see. She's stubborn and gets what she wants( aka her mannnn honey) I loved Mia so much, she's such a vibe and THE GIRL
Jake patient, sweet and steamy, THIS MANN!! I loved being able to see him overcome his fears, and things that made him challenge himself. He took pride into what he did, from protein shakes, rock climbing, and Loving to tease Mia. Jake did all of those things well. Watching him grow feelings and chasing the one woman, was a sight to see let me tell you honey. He's such a sweet and hearting warming giant omll!! The way he can take care of a woman's needs physically ;) and mentally you can not tell me you wouldn't fall for this man either.
I CAN NOT express enough how much I enjoyed reading this book, it was such a forever memorable experience working with this author. I want to literally give a big hug and smiles to Smaradline for allowing me to read her work. This book was well written, and deeply thought out, as you can tell from each character's personality and the setting of the book. I truly have this book in my heart!!
“I really hope one day you meet that person worth falling for.”
This book follows the story of Mia who is trying to navigate life after her mother’s death. She follows her mother’s last wishes and goes on a trip to a cabin in Vermont that her mother had booked for her for the summer.
Following the death of his father, Jake now has to help his mother run their boutique hotel which is the last thing he wants to do. But when an error in the hotel’s system has Mia booked at the same house that Jake was planning to stay, they find themselves stuck with each other for the summer.
I enjoyed this book so much!! I really loved seeing little bits of Mia’s Haitian roots. The forest POV was so interesting and unique! Seeing the back story of where the necklaces came from and Ifu/Eadrick story added to the storyline so well!
Mia was such a great fmc, and so relatable!! I loved all the bits of her mom that we got to see, it was clear how much she loved her and why Mia missed her so much.
Jake was such a smooth talker and so charming! He definitely had me blushing in multiple moments during this book. And he was also such a gentleman?! As much as he tried not to, he couldn’t help but take care of Mia.
The banter was so entertaining, I loved it! There were so many sweet moments between the pair. The moments of vulnerability and honesty at the waterfall really allowed them to deepen their feelings without realizing it. This book also had the perfect amount of spice!
I did feel like there were parts that were kind of repetitive and some details that were added in didn’t really contribute to the story. I also really didn’t like how long the third act breakup was, but I was happy when they finally got back together.
Overall, this was a solid read. So grateful for the ARC, make sure you check this one out! 🫶🏾💖
