Rate this book
Beth, 19, recounts to a court-appointed psychiatrist the events leading to the disappearance of her 7-year-old sister. Grotesque Denny, aware from birth that she is unwanted, plays mute and dull-witted. She sees no reason to be smart for a mother and father who keep her hidden in their fancy townhouse so she won't shock their friends and business associates. Only Beth knows how brilliant her sister is. She loves and protects her, but upon discovering that Denny can read her thoughts, her love turns to fear.

Denny's innocent pranks escalate to acts of violence. Her beautiful mother mysteriously plunges down the staircase. Then Beth's high school boyfriend's car crashes into his favorite tree by the the bank of the river. When Beth wins the science scholarship admitting her into Stanford University, she snatches the opportunity to escape from Denny. While there, Beth falls in love with an associate professor, Theo Demeter. At a circus show, Beth is separated from Theo and then confronted in the glass in the house of mirrors by her little sister. Denny warns that if Beth doesn't come home immediately, something terrible will happen. Beth returns east to the house on Park Square and finds Denny in the Peach Room near death.

As Denny miraculously recovers, Beth becomes ill. Weak and desperate, Beth secretly sends for Theo. Denny knows, and she prepares for his coming with plans to get rid of him.
