Maggie Chambers was the librarian of a very different sort of small-town library. She and her husband, Howard Stalter, had long felt that society was hanging on by just a thread and that, eventually, something was going to happen to push it over the edge. They didn’t know what or when, but they were determined to be prepared to help themselves first and then the people of their small town when it did.
When disaster finally did strike, in the form of a CME, their well-thought-out plans seemed to fall apart. Was all their advance planning pointless, or could they still salvage it for the greater good?
I was initially excited that a library might be a focus of a post-apocalyptic story. Not only did libraries help me during a difficult childhood, but in so many PA stories and movies, I felt like they always missed some good resources in not checking out the libraries. Even though, the library does figure in this story, it is primarily because of its proximity to secret caves and some valuable old books. I did like the characters for the most part, really liked the quotes at the start of the chapters and a lot of the "prepping" ideas, but there were some issues that I had with the story. It did not seem credible to me that Maggie, so involved as the librarian for so many years, had no idea about the history of the library nor that her husband never discussed it with her. Nah. Maggie, Howard and Robbie and later a bunch of other incredibly useful people are all involved in preparing for bad times. They seem to have a very negative view of current life in America but without much in specifics as to what is "bad". Honestly, a devastating CME would create an incredible disaster whether life in America was good or bad, so perhaps the gloomy outlook was just part of subtle political shade. The Janet story line was just odd. She has been in Maggie's town for 10 years??? Robbie has not been home in all that time? She keeps popping up over and over to cause grief? Massive CME is a fairly common theme right now, but trying to boost it with random scientifical terms was unnecessary. Neutrinos have been measured in the sun, but strictly for information as to how fusion works in a star, not because they are indicative of any event. Maggie was tiresome with her gloom over not being able to do her library lending plan in the apocalypse. Lady, you are in a survival situation and are stuck on how you thought the apocalypse would go and not how it really is? There are several writing and editing issues with punctuation and spacing, some indirect objects being used as direct objects and wrong words (ex. droop instead of drop). Still with all this, I kind of enjoyed the story and am likely to see what happens since it ended with a cliffhanger.
As a huge fan of the "As the Light Dies World" series, i was a little surprised to see this as a part of it. The title intrigued, so I decided to read it. Almost half way in, the first reference to the series appears, and it has little to no impact on the story (at least in this volume). I think this is well written, and really enjoyed it. Recommended, and hopeful the next volume will be coming soon....
Fresh idea in the apocalyptic literature genre. Loved the premise and can't wait to see it bare fruit in number two. If this is a taste of what the, "As The Light Dies" saga, spinoffs are like, I'm really looking forward to reading the whole series. Good job Doreen and Boyd! Very well done!
I truly enjoyed this episode. Librarians are one of my favorite teachers. I thought some of the characters in this story were very stubborn. Over and over they had to be shown that there are many bad people in the world. Looking forward to reading the next episode of this story.
This is a good read! Well written with lots of subtle hints. This sets up the next story and is different than the other books in this saga. Characters are well fleshed out and stay in character. Please hurry and write the next novel!
I can’t believe you left me hanging. What happens next? I’m going to be so impatient until I find out who and what happens! Good job! Gold star for excitement!
If you like a story where the good guys win, where everything necessary for success is handed to them, and where any ills that befall them are minor and barely sniff of reality, then this story is for you. I’ll not be reading the next book.
I really liked the characters in this story. I liked how Maggie wanted to help the town. The story starts off pretty slow with everyone just preparing for when things get bad. It picks up near the end. This is a nice clean story with no swearing.
This book read more like a list of events rather than an actual story. The formula that was initially created was quickly thrown out. There was a lot of redundancy, overused phrases, and I never cared enough about the characters to be concerned about what happened to them.
Enjoyed every word. Relationships and prepping. Characters are good but there are a lot of them and I had a bit of a hard time keeping everyone straight.
Nice plot, great editing! Really enjoyed the quotes and characters! Not earth shattering, but an enjoyable and engaging read! Looking forward to reading more.
