My thanks to NetGalley and Abrams ComicArts Kana for an advance copy of this first in series about two brothers, the corrupt city they live in, and their father's legacy which might give them the strength to take on this corruption.

Corruption drains people in ways that are not always financial. People give up on hopes and dreams. People give up on trying and people give up on civilization. Why do something for someone else when something bigger and stronger might just come and take it away. And when complaining to the people who should be doing something about it, they just look away. When the fix is in, everything around it suffers. This is the fate of two brothers, Zack and Joe. Zack is a cop, just like his father, a person who is trying to make a difference. Joe his brother is at looser ends, but is still trying. But the city is constantly finding ways to mess with them. However maybe their father's legacy might help them in ways they never thought. Space Punch Volume 1 written and illustrated by ZD, is a story of crime, love, boxing, and fighting the good fight.

The city exists in a strange sort of détente. The police and mob have a deal, don't make waves, we won't get in your way. Do something public, we will have to do something. Zack and Joe are the sons of a policeman, one well-known and respected by many in power. At least they is what the say to Zack, as Zack has his doubts, about many in the police force. Zack has continued the tradition, while Joe seems to be at a loss of what to do with his life. A new job being a noodle delivery person ends with him losing money, his bike, and his job. Zack meanwhile has arrested the wrong person, a person who is let free by Zack's boss within seconds of his arriving at headquarters. Zack and Joe decide to visit the old cabin to get away, and while there find a pair of boxing gloves and a baseball hat owned by their father. As Zack puts on the hat, and Joe puts on the gloves they are beset by gangsters wanting to dish out a little ultraviolence for Zack's arrest of their friend. When things look dire the brothers escape, all while doing things that norman people shouldn't be able to do. Somehow the hat and the gloves have given the brothers power, power that might let them strike back at the people who are ruining the city.

A very engaging story that slowly unfolds, and even with the sudden appearance of supernatural hat and gloves makes sense. The world is interesting and the power structures are well laid out. The comic is more acton than violence, though there is a strong undercurrent that things could go bad fast. Zack and Joe are interesting characters and show a lot of potential. There are a lot of other characters introduced, so there should be a strong supporting cast. The art is quite good. The details on the vehicles is really good, the action smooth and daring, and the characters are well-rendered. Combined with a a lot of good world building this is a very promising start to action packed series.

The first book in a new manga series filled with action with a touch of sadness. Two brothers have lost their father, a man with a legacy. Zack followed in his footsteps and became an upstanding police officer himself, a refrigerator of a man that the mother is very proud of. Joe on the other hand is a bit of a lazy loser that he even gets beat up by a girl at a boxing gym, but the two boys go away to a cabin for a weekend together and two things happen- first they find some of their father's things that bring back memories of him (but also some powers) and a mafia-style hit gang has shown up to try to take them both out and they must fight back.

The chase, the intrigue, and the relationship between the brothers will be tested throughout the series but I'm also curious about how their father's items will help them in future fights against this gang.
