Another page turner from Rebecca Heath. The Wedding Party is full of terrible people, all of whom have secrets from each other. I found it hard to like any of them, really, but that was part of the fun.

Adele and Jason are getting married in Refuge Bay on the South Australian coast. They have known each other for years, having holidayed in the area with their families when they were teenagers, but 12 years ago, a tragedy occurred and changed them all forever. Now, back at the same place, tensions are high, and somebody is trying to warn Adele off the wedding.

This was a quick and fun read that I finished in a few hours. We don’t know the full story of what happened in the past, but we get chapters in the present and 12 years ago, and we start to put the pieces together. I would have been happy for most of these characters to get what was coming to them, to be honest.

Thanks to Bloomsbury ANZ on NetGalley for my early copy to read. This is the perfect beach read for those who love a twisty thriller, with an unsettling vibe. Publishes on January 7th, 2025.

ARC for review. To be published January 23, 2025.

A mid-level thriller saved by a nice twist at the end…welcome to THE WEDDING PARTY.

Adele and Jason were childhood sweethearts and now they are getting married on the Australia coast with plenty of family and friends in attendance, but Adele is perpetuating a lie and some members of the bridal party are also lying about a death in the group ten years ago. And, seriously, you think THIS is the weekend it needs to come out? When we’ve bought orchids, people? ORCHIDS?!?!

The story is told in alternating POV by Adele, the bride and Melanie, the mother of Ollie, Adele’s former boyfriend who died a decade before. Because nothing says “good times” like mother of dead ex who is still grieving.

This really isn’t trying all that hard and some stuff is never explained. It is really saved by the twist…but it IS saved by the twist, so it was worth reading.

ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the premise of this book and setting it at a wedding leading up to a mysterious murder kept me intrigued! Certain aspects felt fairly predictable while others I definitely didn’t see coming. I liked how most of the characters had a touch of the dark side in them, it felt more realistic to what most people are really like. I would recommend if you like psychological thrillers and mysteries set at a wedding!

The colourful cover of “The wedding party” is definitely what originally attracted me to this book! And then to find out it is a thriller located in Australia, sign me up! The last few Australian located thrillers I’ve read have been the excellent balance of summer vacation and mystery thriller combination so I was excited to dig in.

The plot follows a couple who return to childhood stomping grounds for their upcoming wedding. For some this is their vacation spot for others it is their full time home but one thing is clear, these families are connected deeply and have known each other for a very long time.

The chapters alternate between characters and it is quick to see that some characters are harbouring grudges, others seem to have a guilty conscience and for some they definitely have an agenda of the sabotage / revenge variety.

I’d say the bride to be was the most interesting character as it wasn’t sure what her intentions truly were or where her loyalties actually lied. We got some flashback scenes to the groups childhood through the POV of the sister that gave more context to the true nature of some of the characters.

This was a very mid thriller for me, there was lots of drama throughout and a very quirky twist to the ending but I struggled with not feeling connected to any of the characters, no one seemed particularly likeable or redeemable so I wasn’t very invested in the outcome.

Thank you to Aria & Aries publishing and Rebecca Heath for the EARC!

Although I was initially hooked on the premise, and liked how it was multi-perspective, it lacked the suspense to land as a solid thriller. Too many sprawling plot threads resulting in an anti-climatic twist.

Perfect holiday read. I can’t complain too much, as this broke my dry reading spell, and sometimes it’s a low-key read that does the trick.

Adele is getting married, and is looking forward to it. Her fiance is Jason Ellingsworth, a wealthy young man who has encouraged her to invite family and even friends from their shared past when both experienced a horrible incident -- the tragic death of Adele's then boyfriend Oliver -- to share in their happy day.

The novel opens with the wedding party members arriving at the cottages they'll be staying at, and we meet Oliver's sister and still grieving mother, as well as Adele's self-obsessed mother and father, and Jason's best man and Jason's domineering grandmother.

We quickly realize that everyone has secrets, some much worse than others, and all have been affected to greater and lesser degrees by Oliver's death years ago.

We get Adele's an, Melanie's (Oliver's mother) points of view, and see the increasing tensions and angers amongst the party, and begin to wonder just what is really going on, as things seem to be misplaced, confrontations occurring, and contradictory feelings exposed. We also get flashbacks to the days leading up to Oliver's death, giving context to the tensions and jealousies.

Adele seems both eager and strangely reluctant, despite given several outs, to halt the wedding, and it's clear she and Jason share a secret from their adolescence.

This was not a particularly thrilling thriller. I found it difficult to connect with any of the characters, and was not particularly surprised by the twists that happened, having figured out what was at the heart of all the acrimony between Melanie's and Adele's family early on.

I did like Jason's grandmother, though, who comes off as strong minded, and surprisingly ruthless.

Thank you to Netgalley and to Aria & Aries for this ARC in exchange for my review.

Totally expected ending here but did enjoy this book. My only gripe, and I get it was necessary for the storyline, was how each chapter jumped from each character then at times jumped back 12 years to the “accident”.

The characters are good but jeez the mother Melinda annoyed me. Jason the groom was so controlling and too sweet at times to be true. Then there’s his grandmother, wow, wasn’t that a huge surprise. So much for having dementia!! Great characters despite a couple being obnoxious and a great storyline too. I wish I’d heard her talk at Adelaide Writers Week but hopefully I can watch when it goes online. It just proves if something bad happens to you it really needs to be reported at the time to avoid others having such heartbreak. But I get how young are embarrassed or too scared and fearful of being not being believed.

I am always excited about books like this, where there is a mystery around a singular event like a wedding. This one didn’t entirely hit the mark for me, though. The story centers on Adele and Jason, who are getting married at a vacation resort that their families have been visiting since they were kids. There are secrets that threaten to be exposed, primarily around the death of Adele’s childhood sweetheart (and Jason’s best friend) Ollie when they were teens. You get some chapters told from the POV of Ollie’s mom, Melanie, who has not been able to move on.

I liked that the whole book took place within a few days of the upcoming wedding, which made it a tense read. There were also flashback chapters that helped fill in the background. The early chapters were a little slow-paced, but I was glad to get the history that was important to the current situation. The action definitely ratchets up towards the end. While I was mostly ok with how the book ended, I was left with a major question that never got answered, which affected my enjoyment of the overall story.

Overall, this was an engaging read and I enjoyed it for the most part but walked away a bit confused overall. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you, Aria/Aries and NetGalley, for the ARC of The Wedding Party.

2.5 ☆
I enjoyed the first 30%, but it just went down hill after that.

This had so much potential, but there was too much going on, and I just found myself more confused the more I read.

The ending was anticlimactic, and the twists were predictable.

This book goes back-and-forth between a three day time period leading up to Adele and Jason‘s wedding, and 12 years ago when Adele‘s former boyfriend died. The story centers around how and why Ollie died, his sister Sophie, his mother, Melanie. Sophie and Melanie are both involved in the wedding, Along with Jason and Adele‘s parents. This very much read like a soap opera, if you like a lot of melodrama, this book might be a good one for you. I found a lot of it to be a little unbelievable and at times dragged on and then other times rushed, I really just didn’t like the pacing. There were few likable characters in this novel. That said, it doesn’t take a lot of thought process, and could be good if you need something that is a story to escape into. I would’ve liked to have heard more about the island in Australia, the setting. Again, I don’t want to give away any of the plot points, but there was what I would consider to be an awful lot of extreme drama.

Thanks to NetGalley and Aria Books for the arc. Book to be released January 23, 2025.

This one was slow to get into, and I didn't love the author's foreshadowing at the end of every chapter of all the secrets to be revealed. The second half got better and the pacing picked up some. Adele's chapters were interesting and you never really knew if you could trust her or not. Most of the twists were predictable or hinted at, so nothing was overly shocking and not everything was completely explained.

Thanks NetGalley for this ARC!

Destination psychological thriller author Rebecca Heath is taking audiences to a dangerous wedding location where a group of old friends gather for a murderous week.
The Wedding Party is gripping, villainous and twisty.
Adele and Jason are having a venue wedding on the Australian coast.
A celebration with family and friends.
But someone has other ideas and is out for revenge.
Added in to the mix is a decade old tragedy where someone died.
Now secrets, lies, deception and mystery is also on the guest list…….
A cloudy, crooked and perilous tale where you can’t trust anyone.
Told through characters points of view, past and present, the narrative is rich in detail, a cast to love and hate and an atmosphere of tense moments.
A good thriller with suspense, mayhem and drama.
Rebecca is slaying the genre and I look forward to where we go next.
You do not want an invitation to this wedding…..

I really wanted to like this, but it ultimately fell flat for me. The wedding party centers around Adele and Jason as they prepare to get married. The wedding is set to be a picture perfect day, but everyone is harboring a secret of some kind, largely around the death of Ollie, Adele’s childhood sweetheart and Jason’s best friend. The story is told from multiple POV’s, including Ollie’s mom, which I enjoyed. And the author’s writing style made for an easy read.

Overall an okay read, but it felt a bit slow and like there was a lot of build up for an ending that didn’t deliver as much as I would’ve liked. I wanted to feel like I was on the edge of my seat needing to know what happened next, and this never got there for me.

What a weak thriller! And, well, calling this a ‘thriller’ is being generous. If felt more like a drama involving three families.

Pretty much all the characters were unlikeable, but this didn’t even work in favour of the story.

And not even the way it ended did save the whole thing.

Domestic thrillers are some of my favorites, especially with multiple POVs. Adele is getting married, but it seems like something is off. The story is told through the wedding weekend & there are lots of twists. Overall, predictable, but it was a good time.

Thank you to NetGalley and Head of Zeus part of Bloomsbury Publishing for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

This title is published on January 23rd, 2025.

'The Wedding Party' was a fairly underwhelming read. It promised plenty; drama, action and an intriguing mystery to unravel. Ultimately, it offered little of the above. The plot progressed between two PoVs and did offer some moments that could have really pushed this title to another level of suspense, but they never materialized. Quite literally. One particular plot point never even took place in the main story; you found out about it later.

This book is a missed opportunity and one I shall quickly forget.

Thanks to NetGalley, Bloomsbury ANZ Head of Zeus, and the author for the chance to read this book.

This was a gripping storyline that had me sucked in from early on. There are many people with motivation to cause harm, and it's not always easy to tell who the culprit is. I enjoyed the twists and drama within the story.

This is my third Rebecca Heath psychological thriller, and I think she just gets better and better! The Wedding Party is seething with tension right from the first page. I never stopped having questions throughout the book. This author certainly knows how to keep a reader hooked.
The story is told from multiple points of view. Every chapter is by a certain character. This kept me on my toes so easily! I couldn't stop reading if I wanted to! As events unfolded the sense of unease, I felt just increased. I couldn't help guessing the answers to my own questions. I have to say I wasn't right. The final twist left me properly. Jaw dropped! Rebecca Heath played a blinder with that one!
I am impatiently waiting for the next book from this author. I know it's going to be a brilliant pageturner if The Wedding Party is anything to go by!

I really wanted to love this book—it had all the elements of a great mystery. But honestly, it just didn’t work for me. From the start, I found it hard to keep track of the characters. So many names and relationships were thrown at me all at once that I felt lost.

The pacing was another issue. Some parts dragged on forever, while others felt rushed. I kept waiting for that "aha" moment, but the twists were too predictable to be exciting. Adele’s cryptic messages and Melanie’s search for answers had potential, but they didn’t go anywhere surprising.

And the ending... I still don’t know what to make of it. It introduced new revelations that felt unnecessary and left me more confused than satisfied. I honestly feel like I missed something, which is frustrating because the writing itself wasn’t bad.

In the end, this just wasn’t for me. It had flashes of promise but got lost in its own complexity.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

The Wedding Party by Rebecca Heath is the third by the Aussie author (read my review of The Summer Party ). This unfolds from several points of view - the bride herself, the mother of the bride's childhood boyfriend; and that boyfriend's sister. The narrators make sense as the wedding is taking place at a beach town where the teenage boyfriend died twelve years earlier and where the families involved had (and still have) holiday houses.

I have to admit one of the challenging things about this book was that fact that most of the characters are not particularly likeable. But as we're privy to our three narrators' thoughts, memories and feelings, we understand them.

This is an enjoyable read, though a touch predictable until Heath throws a twist or two in at the end, offering closure for events long-passed. Well, mostly.

My Rating - W
2 Wedding Crasher Stars
Oh vey, a you ever read a book and it was so disappointing that you struggled for words to write your review?
Well that's what's happening here for me with The Wedding Party
This was an epic flop for me and the premise sounded soo good, I thought oh perfect beach read, but it's taken me 5 days to read this sucker
Once again a beautiful cover sucked me in
I really don't like writing negative reviews but I want to be totally honest with you y'all and I have been known to be an outlier so this may be a winner for someone else.
Quickly in a nutshell this is a melodramatic light thriller filled with MULTIPLE POV's and dual timelines.
It's Adele's upcoming wedding and everyone is arriving at the cabins, where people from her past have come together to be united once again.
The only problem is one of the guests Ollies mother who can't let go of the past with her son Ollie who died tragically many years ago and Melanie is seeking answers, she wants the truth of what happened that day.... But no one is willing to tell the truth.
While Melanie is seeking answers, Adele is receiving cryptic dark messages and someone is threatening her not to marry Jason, is Adele as perfect as everyone thinks she is, or is she hiding secrets too ?
I felt the pacing was off and too long in the tooth and just strung us along and lacked suspense and climax, I really felt it could have had potential but this one was another miss at the Alter and I feel there is better reads out there waiting for you . d

Thank you to Netgalley and Head of Zeus for the eARC!

Told from 3 different character POVs-2 in first person and 1 in third person-we follow a group of characters celebrating an upcoming wedding but everyone is hiding something. I was intrigued by the mystery with the first chapter but it did take me a little while to feel fully engaged.

While I do usually enjoy unlikeable characters, I need them to be complex and have depth to them. These characters were so cliche and over the top dramatic that they were just completely unlikeable and I rooted for no one 😂 Repetitive in terms of character’s actions and inner dialogue-we learn no new information about most of them so I can’t say there was any development or depth to anyone; and at times in the middle I started to feel annoyed at their constant inability to make a change or communicate.

The writing could be a bit cliche and oversimplified, not to mention I choked on my water when the author seems to imply that calling someone a Viking is “racist” bffr 🙃

However all that being said it was still an entertaining, easy, and quick read! While the plot and characters were cliche and the writing could be a bit over the top, I still had a good time. Plus the plot twists were so surprising for me (as someone who guesses 99% of the twists in the first quarter of most thrillers)!

I’d recommend if you want an entertaining domestic thriller that’s easy to read, and don’t mind unlikeable rich people 😄

I found myself whizzing through this book yesterday and finishing it this morning, I had hoped to finish last night but sleep called.

Jason and Adele are getting married, but does Adele love Jason? It is very hard to tell, especially with her mother and father Tammy and Terry pushing for the wedding, but they aren’t thinking of their daughter they are thinking of the money. The story is full with so many characters and none of them nice, except for maybe Sophie and Pip. Set on the Australian Coast, the wedding is at a place known as refuge bay. Jason and Adele have known each other for years having holidayed in Refuge Bay when they were younger. I just didn’t think Jason was trustworthy. Twelve years earlier a tragedy in Refuge Bay had changed everyone forever. The secrets some of them held from that fateful night.

The story is told from three points of view Melanie, Ollie and Sophie’s mum, Adele, the bride, and Sophie. Most of Sophie’s is from 12 years earlier and what had happened that fateful day. Can we trust their POV? The timeline is a week before the wedding, as we see the interactions between the bride and the groom. The anger Melanie still feels, as she drinks her way through life. I actually really felt for Sophie as she had really never had anything from her mum. Who doesn’t want them to get married? Because Adele has received several pictures of a bride with her throat cut, or the face erased. But Jason is also getting text messages telling him not to do it. Who is sending these messages?

Dorothy, Jason’s gran is quite a character, she some times pretends to forget things but I think she is sharper than anyone thinks, she certainly controls Jason quite a bit and he doesn’t like it.

Overall this is a read that I read quite quickly, I loved the twist at the end. Something i didn’t expect, i felt more tension in the last chapters than the rest of the book. That is what made me give this book 4 stars. I normally have to like at least one character but this time it was hard to like any of them, they didn’t seem to have any nice traits, or personalities that you would want to be friends with, except for Sophie and PiP maybe, who had been practically ignored from twelve years earlier.

I would like to thank @AriesFiction for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. All thoughts are my own and have not been influenced in any way.

Adele and Jason are getting married at the vacation spot that their family and friends have been visiting since they were kids. A tragedy occurred when they were teens and a threat of secrets being exposed, soon has the bridal party and families on edge and things unravelling.

I enjoyed the multiple POV’s and the fact that it was set over just a few days, it made for a fast paced, hook you in read.

I’ve struggle a little in the past with the characters in Rebecca’s stories, where I have failed to connect with them and found them flat, but in this, the characters have more depth to them and I was able to understand better of their decision making.

It was dramatic, but being that it’s set around a wedding and with the lives of some of these characters, it was totally plausible.

Unfortunately though I wasn’t a fan of the twists and its ending, I found it too simple and was not surprised and then there were just a couple of things that were left without answers, but they weren’t in a jaw dropping, cliffhanger way, just left me going, “huh?”

I won’t give up on reading Rebecca’s books, I have liked them slightly more with each New Release, so I look forward to seeing what’s next.

I really liked Rebecca Heath’s “The Summer Party” and I loved “The Dinner Party.” The author is skilled at creating a gathering and threading a mystery or two (past and present) throughout the storyline.

In this case, what bride invites the estranged sister of her long dead boyfriend to be a bridesmaid as well as his bitter, accusing mother? Or plans her wedding at the vacation spot where the former boyfriend died? Of course, this wedding party is going to have fireworks.

The plot moves between the wedding and the days before Ollie’s death 12 years ago. When bride Adele was Ollie’s girl, groom Jason was just part of their friend circle, and Melanie, Ollie’s mom, could (and still) only imagine Adele as Ollie’s soulmate.

The POVs alternate between Adele and Melanie in the present, and Sophie, Ollie’s sister, in the past. It appears someone is trying to sabotage the wedding (sending anonymous messages, canceling the caterers, sabotaging a venue), but whoever is doing that out-of-sight can’t match the surliness and drunkenness of most of the immediate family members. Adele initially seems like the only sympathetic character, but that, too, might be an illusion.

Anyway, author Heath’s books always seem like gossipy fun. I’ve been to a couple of weddings where I’ve never seen the couple again but didn’t realize it at the time — Adele’s and Jason’s wedding is heading that way in this book. Until the end, you wonder if “The Wedding Party” will even include a wedding. I thoroughly enjoyed this party. 5 stars!

The storyline is told by several different characters and alternates between the past (12 years ago) and the present.

Something terrible happened one night twelve years ago. Lives were forever changed, and many secrets were created.

In present day, Adele and Jason are quickly approaching their wedding day. One would think they should be blissfully in love, however, things aren't quite as they seem. There may be ulterior motives for each of them wanting to marry each other, but what exactly are they?

I felt the writing was repetitive, and I wanted to give up several times. It took me FIVE DAYS to read this book, which is unusually long for me. I do have to say that the ending wasn't totally predictable, but I still wasn't shocked.

This thriller has an fun and entertaining setup, but ultimately, it didn’t resonate with me. The story, centered around a seemingly perfect wedding weekend unraveling with secrets and drama, felt overly predictable. The characters came across as clichés for me, making it hard to feel invested in their stories. Overall, it was an okay read, the setting and atmosphere had potential but I didn’t feel the tension and suspense I usually look for in thrillers.

Told in multiple POVs, this psychological thriller centres around Adele and Jason and their impending nuptials on a remote Australian beach.

I struggled with this one. I felt there were too many things going on and trying to be threaded into the story all at once, some of which went nowhere.
I kept on until the end and although some parts were great, the majority had me wondering why I didn't add this to my DNF pile.

It is always fun to read Rebecca Heath's party thrillers! Her latest novel has us witnessing the lead up to the wedding of Adele and Jason with so many guests having their own hidden agendas.

It's no secret that I love secrets in thrillers. When the big reveals started, I felt like rubbing my hands together in glee! This was a fast paced, juicy novel that I motored through at high speed. If you've loved this author's previous books, you'll love this one too. And if you haven't read her books before, what are you waiting for?
