Nikola Scott started out in book publishing and worked as a crime fiction editor in America and England for many years. This was an interesting and pleasurable read overall....insightful into the heirachy and British medical system of the 1950s and their National Health Service. It did clue up in a satisfying way for the most part although a bit bitter sweet perhaps. No over the top, unbelievable type people or situations thankfully. A first for this author for me but won't mind reading others by her!

The Life I Stole is a super story of two friends, Isobel McIntyre and Agnes Crawford. They come from very different backgrounds yet their friendship is solid. When tragedy strikes, Agnes takes on her friends’ identity changing her life completely. Lies grow day by day as she tries to maintain her secret and fit in and she fears that lasting love can never be found.
Set in the early 1950’s in the infant years of the National Health Service, this story also tells of the struggles female medical students had to endure as they entered a predominantly male environment.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book that held my attention throughout with its interesting characters and captivating storyline.

This set me up in post war Britain immediately. I got the sense of place and time from the off and felt immersed into that world with ease. I must admit that I hadn't really considered that structural buildings would still be at risk and this made me for not only interesting reading but a great plot point to move on this story.

Initially I was worried that this may seem a tad too far fetched, but the author makes this believable and convincing. I liked Agnes' guilt throughout which made her more personable as the main character.

A good storyline that was well paced and I did wonder how all of this may get to its resolution. Fascinating and sharp.

Jag uppskattar verkligen historiska romaner där jag får ta del av ett avsnitt av historien inom vilken jag inte är så beläst. Jag kan därmed erkänna att jag inte hade koll på kvinnornas roll i just England under 50-talet. Tycker dock att detta ändrats en del efter att jag har läst denna bok.
Gällande handlingen i boken så tycker jag att den var toppen. Sidorna flög fram och jag ville inte sluta läsa. Jag behövde få veta om det skulle bli ett uppenbart slut eller om det skulle komma någon twist. Vad det blev? Läs and find out. ;)
Även om det är en historisk roman så skulle jag också säga att den innehåller en del kärlek a la feelgood. Jag tycker att detta blir pricken över i:et.
Men tro nu inte att det bara är en massa kärlekdravel. Läsaren får faktiskt följa med på en resa där en stark kvinna utforskar vem hon blivit och vem hon önskar vara. Underbart! En absolut läsvärd bok, anser jag.

London struggles to regain control after World War II, things look promising in fact, and there’s a positive outlook on the horizon despite the destruction caused by the constant bombing by the Germans. Many people lost their lives and things that appeared stable were just a facade, masking devastation. It was from the bowels of devastation that Agnes Crawford decided to step into the pristine fitting shoes of Isobel McIntyre and chose to live a life of deceit and lies so she could fulfill her own dreams in science. When opportunity knocks you open the door, but life is never that simplistic. “The Life I Stole”, examines the consequences of such a decision when there is no turning back and you are forced to proceed full steam ahead.

I enjoyed the premise of the book, but at times found portions of it rather dull in the very beginning, but I was invested as a reader to find out how the new Isobel constructed the world around her, how she would survive. It would be so easy to slip up when your defensive wall becomes weakened because you are really not who you say you are and eventually the walls around you lose strength and begin to crumble. She also chose to become a doctor at a time when women were not given the recognition nor qualifications to be credentialed and practice medicine on the same level as men, it was predominantly a field for distinguished gentlemen. When you shine the spotlight directly upon yourself, you must reap what you sow within that light. The historical details in this book were magnificent and extensively researched. The breaking down of gender barriers resonates the slow process of such a task, it is political after all.

It’s an emotionally charged booked, filled with deep dark secrets, and betrayal by characters that are truly relatable. The struggles to survive and to be accepted are at the forefront in 1950’s London. When life takes you on a turbulent course, important decisions have to be made and you have to let the chips fall where they may to maintain inner peace. Once I got past the beginning, the pace picked up momentum and I enjoyed the book, especially a few surprise revelations, which really brought things full circle. The truth at times is closer than you could ever imagine. Sometimes it is right on your doorstep.

Wat een fantastisch mooi boek was dit!
We gaan mee met Isobel, ze studeerd voor arts in ze loopt mee in een ziekenhuis.
In de jaren 50 is het niet makkelijk voor een vrouw om in de medische wereld te komen wat gedomineerd word door mannen. Ze word dan echter ook niet gezien door de mannelijke artsen en krijgt alleen maar te horen dat ze beter een zuster kan worden in plaats van een chirurg; wat ze dus graag wilt worden.

In het begin van het boek gebeurd er is waardoor ze de identiteit aanneemt van iemand anders. Zo kan ze dus studeren.
Ze doet er alles aan om diegene te worden en bouwt een hele muur om haar heen. Ze laat niemand binnen want dat kan ze niet veroorloven. Ze heeft hard gewerkt om haar geheim geheim te houden.
Dan ontmoet ze Grey in het ziekenhuis. Een mannelijke arts en hij ziet haar wel staan.
Er ontstaat een soort vriendschap en misschien nog wel meer gevoelens.
Maar kan ze hier wel op ingaan?
Durft ze wel haar eigen te zijn bij hem?
Langzaam ziet ze ook dat mensen steun en liefde hebben van families. Iets wat zij niet heeft maar toch stiekem naar verlangt.

Gedurende het boek komen we steeds meer te weten of haar leven en die van Grey. En het blijkt steeds meer dat het toch een kleine wereld is .....

Ik vond het een heel mooi boek. Hoe ze probeerd om te blijven staan in een wereld waar vrouwen eigenlijk niet welkom zijn. Hoe ze probeert de wereld beetje bij beetje te veranderen.
Het las lekker weg en de schrijfstijl was heel fijn.
Je moet wel met de namen je hoofd erbij houden want soms werd het even ingewikkeld.

Al om al is het zeker een boek die ik aanraad als je van historische romans houdt.

כבר מעטיפת הכריכה ברור שאגנס לוקחת את הזהות של איזבל ולומדת רפואה.
זו הזדמנות פז לאגנס, שנותרה חסרת כל ולבדה, לרשת את השם בעל המוניטין ואת הירושה של חברתה הטובה שאצלה עבדה כמשרתת.
בתחילה אגנס עושה הכל לנצל את ההזדמנות אך לאט לאט, לאורך הספר היא מפקפקת בהחלטתה שכן זה גורם לה לשקר לאנשים שסביבה.
אנשים שהכירו את המשפחה של איזבל מבקשים את נוכחותה באירועים שונים ואיזבל מוצאת עצמה במציאות מלחיצה ביותר עד שעליה לקבל החלטה- מי היא תהיה- אגנס או איזבל.
הספר היה מרתק, נחשפים עוד ועוד אירועים שחושפים את העבר ונראה שהעבר הוא שמשפיע על ההחלטה לבחור את הזהות הסופית.
הורדתי כוכבים כי הרגשתי שנותרתי עם שאלות ועם תחושה שלקראת הסוף הסופרת החליטה לקצר והעיקר לסיים את הספר.

So much promise with this book but it failed. Gave it 3 stars because learning about how healthcare functioned during that time period was interesting. The story of Isobel/Agnes as well as Ella and Grey were sorely lacking. It was so predictable. The ending was weird, it really just cut off…8 months later, one scene and the end.

Nikola Scott is geboren en getogen in Duitsland. Ze studeerde Engels en Duits aan de universiteit voordat ze naar het buitenland verhuisde om jarenlang te werken als redacteur van misdaad- en vrouwenfictie in New-York en Londen. Nu is ze fulltime auteur en woont ze in Frankfurt met haar man en 2 zonen. De sprong naar het auteurschap werd een geweldige reis.

“Iemand die elke dag vroeg opstaat, ongeacht waar de muze zich heeft verstopt, die urenlang zit te zwoegen op plot en personages, schrijft en bewerkt en bewerkt en schrijft. Om de volgende ochtend weer opnieuw te beginnen, omdat het verhaal niet schittert. Het is een proces dat op zijn beurt doornig en verkwikkend, frustrerend en ronduit fantastisch is. En sindsdien heb ik niet meer achteromgekeken.”

Je kunt Nikola Scott onder andere kennen van Oorlogsmeisjes, De schaduw van mijn moeder en Zomer vol geheimen. Voor mij is haar laatste roman, Verborgen leven, de eerste kennismaking met deze auteur. De vertaling is van de hand van Mieke Trouw.

De cover toont een vrouw, gekleed als iemand uit de jaren 50. Ze kijkt achterom naar, wat ik vermoed, de London Bridge. Wat laat ze achter? Waar gaat ze naartoe? De titel, Verborgen leven, in blauwe letters, de auteur in roze. De tinten van de lucht boven de brug. De ondertitel roept vragen op: Hoelang kun je een geheim bewaren?

Maar misschien moet ik even beginnen bij het begin. Waarover gaat Verborgen leven?

Isobel studeert geneeskunde, ze wil chirurg worden. Hiervoor loopt ze stage in een ziekenhuis in Londen. Het is 1953, een tijd waarin een vrouwelijke dokter nog een uitzondering is. Ze moet zich voortdurend bewijzen in een door mannen gedomineerde wereld. Of dit nog niet zwaar genoeg is, torst Isobel ook nog een groot geheim met zich mee. Een geheim dat ze veilig heeft weggestopt achter een dik pantser. Ze komt tijdens haar studie echter mensen tegen die barsten veroorzaken in dat pantser. Lukt het haar om het leven uit te bouwen waar ze van droomt? Of gooit haar geheim roet in het eten en valt haar zorgvuldig opgebouwde leven als een kaartenhuisje in elkaar? Dat lees je in Verborgen leven.

Londen, een ziekenhuis, een vrouw die dokter wil worden, voor mij zijn dit de perfecte ingrediënten voor een heerlijk boek. Hopelijk stelt het niet teleur! De auteur begint dadelijk met een opmerking over de juiste aanspreekvorm van dokters/chirurgen. Historische feiten verweven in een verhaal: check!

Het boek is opgebouwd uit 41 hoofdstukken en eindigt met een historische aantekening en een dankwoord. Nikola Scott heeft het verhaal vanuit het ik-perspectief geschreven, Isobel is aan het woord. Het lettertype is vrij klein wat me soms nauwe oogjes bezorgde om het goed te kunnen lezen. Het verhaal is gedrukt op gerecycleerd papier en bij het openen van het boek kwam de heerlijke geur van een nieuw boek me tegemoet.

Het verhaal start met een flashback naar 1950, het jaar waarin het geheim van Isobel zich afspeelt. Als lezer weet je dus van in het begin wat dit geheim precies inhoudt. Een goede keuze van de auteur? Neemt dit de spanning van het verhaal niet weg? Ik kan je verzekeren dat dat absoluut niet het geval is. Doordat je het geheim kent kun je je nog veel beter inleven in Isobel haar wereld, gevoelens en gedachten. Knap gedaan van Nikola Scott! Na deze flashback keren we terug naar 1953, de periode waarin dit verhaal zich afspeelt.

Nikola Scott hanteert een heel levendige, beeldende schrijfstijl. De sfeer wordt prachtig gecreëerd, situaties en omgeving treffend weergegeven en de emoties en de personages zijn van een diepgang die zorgt dat je hen kent en niet meer wilt missen. De auteur pent prachtige zinnen neer die ik een paar keer na elkaar herlas.

“Het vrijstaande achttiende-eeuwse pand stond aan het uiteinde van een doodlopende straat en keek uit over twee keurige huizenblokken, die wel leerlingen leken die zich in rijen voor de hoofdmeester hadden opgesteld.”

“…Licht vulde dan de kamer, speelde met de tekeningen aan de muren, met de koorden vol knoopjes en glas die aan het plafond waren gedrapeerd, een regenboog van kleuren die bewoog en golfde in de bries die door de openstaande deur naar binnen waaide. Het regenbooguur, noemde mijn moeder dat, en zodra het gebeurde legden we de naaispullen neer en gingen we dansen.”

Het doorzettingsvermogen van Isobel is een bron van inspiratie, omdat ze ondanks de tegenkanting die ze krijgt toch vol voor haar droom wil gaan. Het motiveert je om je eigen leven en keuzes eens terug onder de loep te nemen. Doe ik wat ik echt wil doen, of laat ik angst om niet te slagen mijn leven regeren? De worsteling van Isobel met haar identiteit wordt met diepgang aangeraakt door de auteur. Net als de rechten van de vrouw in die tijd, door heel duidelijk het misprijzen van mannen t.o.v. vrouwen binnen een artsenstudie te schetsen. Mannenwerk versus vrouwenwerk.

Verborgen leven is een verhaal over dromen najagen, doen wat je graag doet, doorzetten. En dit alles overgoten met romantiek, droefenis, en humor. Het is een mooi verhaal waarin de geheimen van meerdere personages langzaam binnensijpelen, als vocht via de muren of het dak. Eerst wordt het niet opgemerkt, maar stilaan begin je het te ruiken, daarna te zien en tot slot wordt het onleefbaar.

Ik ga de personages missen. Ze hebben elk op hun eigen manier indruk op me gemaakt. Dat is de verdienste van een auteur die hen zo een diepgang heeft weten te geven dat ze aanvoelen als kennissen, collega’s, vrienden, familie. De historische aantekening op het einde is zeker ook de moeite om even de tijd voor te nemen.

Verborgen leven is een historisch interessant verhaal over een vrouw die dokter wil worden in een tijd dat dit nog niet evident is. En alsof dit nog niet genoeg is worstelt ze ook nog eens met een geheim en haar identiteit. Dit alles maakt van dit verhaal eentje om je helemaal in te verliezen. Daarom krijgt het van mij 4,5 regenboogkleurige sterren.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I wasn’t disappointed. Agnes is a maid but best friends with Isobel. As they go to a bank an explosion occurs Isobel is killed. Her final words to Agnes is that she takes her place at uni and medical training. Can Agnes carry this off especially as she starts to have feelings for someone close. A fantastic storyline and characters. Thanks to Nikola.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I The romance was very warm and sweet which I liked a lot. No toxic enemies to lovers or the like which I feel like i get a lot, just two people falling in love with each other and just a genuinely kind male lead. I also really liked how the romance didn’t over shadow Agnes’s story arc. I liked how her history with her mother wasn’t sidelined and I found her relationship and love for her mother was just as important as the romance of the story despite the fact that her mom had died when she was young. Her mother and that history wasn't just a mystery to be solved, the emotional attachment to her

I enjoyed this book a good bit. I am only giving it 3.5 stars because it simply was not that memorable for me. I liked it, but I wasn’t itching to find out what happens next which I like when I read and I cant say the I was all that invested in what happened in the story. So I enjoyed it yes, but it didn’t leave a very lasting impression.

The writing was fine. Not good, not bad. It didn’t leave the job.

The romance was very sweet and I really liked Gray. He was just a really nice guy. I liked the fact that the romance wasn’t toxic and full of rivalry which I feel is common in a lot of books I read. Just a girl and a guy who liked each other. And he was quite the gentleman, I would love to find a man like Gray. It was refreshing to read, and had me giggling and kicking my feet at times.

I think the other most important relationship in the books was Agnes’s relationship with her mother. Despite the fact that her mother had died before the book even begins when Agnes is very young, She still remains a very important woman in her life. And not just in Agnes’s discovery of her past, limiting her character to a mystery to be solved to further the plot. It was very clear throughout the book the love that they had for each other.

Spoilers for the ending: I especially loved the final chapter of the book, how we were giving a bit of insight into the releationship and love between Daisy and Alexander. It was really tragic how their story ended, but It was nice to see how joyful and full of love they were for a time. In regards to the relationship between Agnes and Gray, I like how we got an 8 month gap in between the reveal of her identity, and them trying to start something. It let Agnes just be herself, and follow her passion ON HER OWN. But we still do get some satisfaction of them getting together, without them being rushed.

Overall a very pleasant book.

Het is 1953 en Engeland is nog herstellende van de gevolgen van de tweede wereldoorlog. Isobel is arts in opleiding, maar als vrouw heeft ze het niet makkelijk in deze wereld die door mannen gedomineerd wordt. Ze heeft het echter nog moeilijker met haar grote geheim, in de chaos na de oorlog heeft ze een andere identiteit aangenomen, waardoor ze de mogelijkheid kreeg om geneeskunde te gaan studeren. In het begin ging dat goed en dacht ze er niet over na, maar dit valt haar steeds zwaarder. Het hele leven komt op losse schroeven te staan. Vooral als een jonge arts, waar ze gevoelens voor heeft, steeds dichter bij de waarheid komt.

Het verhaal begint spannend, waarna het in wat rustiger vaarwater terecht komt en je de tijd krijgt om alle personages goed te leren kennen. Ook krijg je een inkijkje in het kleurrijke leven van de moeder van de hoofdpersoon. De moeizame weg die ze aflegt om haar dochtertje op te voeden.

Het verhaal heeft korte hoofdstukken, waardoor je snel door het verhaal heen gaat.

Je merkt tijdens het lezen dat Nikola Scott zich echt verdiept heeft in de tijd dat het verhaal zich afspeelt, de rol van de vrouw als werkende en studerende vrouw. De manier waarop arts Carlisle met Isobel omgaat, omdat ze vrouw is en naar zijn gevoel een plek van een man bezet houdt.

Isobel krijgt meer contact met Grey, de zoon van Carlisle, en met de vrouw van Carlisle. Waarna er steeds meer puzzelstukjes over het verleden van Isobel op hun plek vallen. Maar hierdoor begint Isobel ook steede meer moeite te krijgen met het geheim waar ze mee leeft.

Tijdens het lezen merk je dat Isobel worstelt met, aan de ene kant haar geheim, maar aan de andere kant de angst dat haar geheim uitkomt en ze van de opleiding gestuurd wordt. Deze gevoelens weet Scott levensecht over te brengen.

Verborgen leven is een spannende roman waarbij het leven van een jonge vrouw centraal staat, een vrouw die geëmancipeerd is en een betere toekomst voor zichzelf wil. Houd je van historische romans dan kan ik je alleen maar aanraden dit boek op te pakken.

Det liv jeg stjal er en fascinerende roman, der udforsker identitet, kvinders rolle i samfundet og de komplekse bånd mellem fortid og nutid. Handlingen udspiller sig i 1950’ernes Storbritannien og følger en ung kvinde, der efter sin venindes død overtager hendes identitet for at forfølge en karriere som læge. Dette valg fører hende ind i en verden fyldt med patienthistorier, kærlighed og drama, der minder om et afsnit af “Grey’s Anatomy” i en historisk setting.

Selvom jeg havde forventet en mere fokuseret historisk fiktion, og bogen i stedet udviklede sig til en lægeroman, fandt jeg den stadig interessant. Den giver et spændene indblik i de udfordringer, kvinder stod over for i lægeverdenen på den tid, og hvordan det britiske sundhedsvæsen ændrede sig fra privat til offentlig efter Anden Verdenskrig.

Romanen byder på mange stærke scener, hvor familiekærlighed og kvinders styrke træder klart frem. Disse øjeblikke gjorde læseoplevelsen særligt mindeværdig, og jeg nød at se hovedpersonen navigere i sin nye identitet og de hemmeligheder, hun opdager om både sig selv og sin afdøde veninde.

Det liv jeg stjal er en bog, der rummer både intriger og følelsesmæssig dybde. Mens den måske appellerer mere til dem, der nyder lægeromaner med et historisk twist, tilbyder den også værdifuld indsigt i kvinders kamp for ligestilling og deres bidrag til samfundet. I never accepted the premise that Agnes stole Isobel’s life. Instead, it seems more fitting to say that Ella stole the lives of Agnes and her mother, Daisy. Had Daisy married Agnes’ father, their lives would have unfolded in a very different—and likely more fortunate—way. I believe the book's tagline should be its title: "How Long Can You Keep a Secret?” When Isobel learned she was dying, she encouraged Agnes to step in and seize the opportunity of her good fortune.

Set in post-war London, this story explores the challenges a woman faces in gaining entry and thriving in the field of medicine. Through unexpected twists and turns, we follow Agnes’ journey, which becomes intertwined with Grey, a young doctor-in-training with whom she falls in love—despite knowing that her deception stands in the way of their happiness. Pretending to be someone she is not becomes an increasingly heavy burden, especially as she strives for recognition in such a prestigious profession.

Eventually, Agnes realizes she cannot maintain her charade any longer and confesses her truth. While some are unforgiving, she is offered a chance to continue her medical studies as her authentic self, leading to an epiphany: she aspires to become a provider for women. Fate brings her and Grey together once more, culminating in a date where he will perform on the piano—his true calling—alongside a group of amateurs opening for a big act at a club.

The author masterfully immerses the reader in the 1950s landscape of English medicine, leaving us to ponder whether Agnes and Grey will find their way to each other. Personally, I believe they will.

The Life I Stole is set in 1953 and follows a young woman named Isobel who is training to be a doctor. Not only is this a challenge due to the expectation that women should not really progress to the higher ranks of medicine, but also because Isobel is living a lie. She's not who she says she is, having grabbed an opportunity to live another woman's life, and in turn take that woman's place to study to be a doctor. I realise that this doesn't portray Isobel in a particularly good light but, without giving any spoilers, the opportunity doesn't hurt anybody and it gives her a chance to break away from a life that had far fewer prospects.

I always enjoy Nikola Scott's books and I enjoyed The Life I Stole very much indeed. The story is narrated by Isobel and I liked seeing it unfold from her point of view. I especially relished the interesting scenes at the hospital following a consultant on his rounds, or those where she was out helping to save lives in the community. I loved Isobel's feisty nature that couldn't help but present itself, even when she knew she should be quiet and fade into the background.

Add some family intrigue, a potential love interest and some fascinating more minor characters and it makes for a really lovely and absorbing work of historical fiction. The early 1953s were an exciting time for medicine in Britain as the NHS, in its infancy, offered treatment to those for whom it had previously been unobtainable or too expensive. Scott has clearly done plenty of research and reading to get the facts right. A storyline packed with secrets, a spirited protagonist and a fascinating medical backdrop made this an excellent read for me.

An interesting read dealing with women's roles in the post second world war years. Especially in the new NHS. Agnes a maid has the chance to become a doctor when her friend and mistress is killed. She takes her identity and her university place and works her way through the prejudices facing women medical students in the early 1950s. Along the way she makes discoveries about her personal life that rock her world and everything she thought she knew. Ultimately she has to decide if she can continue to live a lie in light of what she finds out or if she needs to come clean and revert to her true identity with all the ensuing consequences.
An easy read. Well researched. I would happily recommend this book. 4*

Great read a real page turner

Great read a real page turner, lot a twists and turns. it was hard to A down at times. . The aurhor is a great story teller, has a way with words and paints a picture so well you think your write there living with them. It had an amazing number twist and turns that I just didn't see coming, it was frustrating at times , but it had a satisfying ending. I really kept looking forward to the next reading section of it. Agnes finally realized "the true would set her free".

Good reading! Isobel and her friend, Agnes, must visit the bank vault to get the safety box of her parents who have passed away. While there, the bank collapses due to the recent bombings by the Nazis and Isobel and Agnes are trapped. Isobel who is scheduled to begin training as a doctor, is severely injured. Knowing she may not make it, she tells Agnes to take her place, use her name and attend the college, which had already been paid for. Agnes came from humble beginnings and would never be able to attend any college...she had a huge decision to make.

ALright storyline, nothing exciting or truly moving. I wouldn't recommend it, but it wasn't bad.
I can't imagine seeing your friend dying like that, and then assuming her life but how often that happened? It was a bit tricky to keep all the parents straight since we were dealing we 2 separate generations. I was shocked at the ending that Agnes and Grey didn't start dating/married and that Agnes told the truth and even though was asked to leave, people understood why she did it and was able to finish her schooling.

In 1948 the NHS was born in Britain. Medical schools were obliged to admit female students. In reality, gaining a medical degree was fraught with challenges. The 1950s was a decade still full of archaic morals. The situation for unmarried pregnant women was appalling.

Isobel wants to be a doctor but her social standing gives her no chance. When a close friend from an aristocratic family dies suddenly, Isobel assumes her identity which allows her entrance to a London medical school.

Interesting characters and a captivating story line.

Women's Rights

I didn't think I would enjoy this story, but the more I read the better it became.
The story of a little girl lost and the woman she had become. Searching for answers and the lies she hid behind to find them. The truth revealed that destroyed the lives of the mom she barely knew and the father she never knew. This being done by her mom's friend.
Will she be able to forgive her and will she be forgiven for the lie she was living.
