The Red Queen will rise again…

Vampire queen Eleanna Cordon didn’t go gently into the good night when her enemies attacked her castle and stole her throne. Instead, she escaped with only her undead life and a heart that, when it did beat, thrummed for raging, violent revenge.

Reclaiming her rightful place requires more than sheer will. It demands a risky alliance with the one man she vowed never to turn to—her ex-lover and the leader of a rival vampire kingdom, Alexandru Amanar. Despite their sordid past, he’s the only one who’s ever been able to give her what she needs. In more ways than one.

But can she trust him?

Their shared history is painted with bloodshed, betrayal, and unrestrained passion, but what the queen wants, she always gets… whether that means staking her enemies or having one of them in her bed.

Red Queen is a dark vampire M/F romance set in a gothic, fantastical world. It is a standalone.

Red Queen is a Gothic vampire fantasy that is equal parts political and steamy romance. They run parallel with each other. Eleanna is trying to take back her stolen throne while having a battle of wills with Alexandru, each wanting the other to bend.

I have mixed feelings about Eleanna. She's morally gray (leaning more towards the charcoal end of that spectrum) and has a dark legacy resting on her shoulders. She's all about being traditional, which means a reign of cruelty and terror, but her ex Alexandru sees something more in her. He wants progression, he sees that as a way of survival. At first glance, he seems cold, but he is very passionate when it comes to the things he loves. Alex was easier to like than Eleanna. It was intriguing to see which one of them will bend first in their battle of wills. This book was one long seduction with plenty of long, steamy chapters. When I used to think of vampire romance, this is what I pictured. Heck, who needs a throne?

Along with the battle of the hearts is a battle for the throne. This book had all the elements of a great fantasy, a fight for the throne, battles, dark magic, and quests. I love a good quest, there is usually some kind of magic and challenges, the characters generally bond, and it has an element of adventure.

I wish the ending for The Red Queen had been a little different. After everything Eleanna and Alexandru went through, it could have had a more celebratory scene. However, I still enjoyed the book. This is my first full fantasy from Harper, and it was a good one. I would highly suggest this if you're looking for a vampire fantasy with a darker edge.

This was quite an entertaining storyline with a unique FMC that we rarely see. I loved her opening speech because you sense that she’s almost an anti-hero. Which is decidedly different. I loved how strong and brave she was throughout the novel, as well as the complicated relationship with the MMC. I happen to like second chance romances and this one pulled it off well.

I do have to admit I wasn’t a fan of the writing, particularly the word choices. Almost every sentence felt like an overdramatized production. I think it’s because it’s supposed to be a gothic novel and seem as if this was several hundred years ago, but it got to be a bit annoying. The way the characters talked felt a little unbelievable.

However despite that, the author was great at making scenes vivid and robust, bringing the action to life. Overall, quite a refreshing and interesting read.

4.5 stars: Red Queen offers thrilling political manipulation, strong- willed characters and sizzling romance that edges between the quest for the ultimate power and succumbing to what the heart desires most. Harper A. Brooks has created a captivating gothic setting, where Eleanna is fighting to get back her rightful place as Queen of the Vampires, but to achieve her goal she makes a deal with her ex Alexandru, one that is likely to challenge both her beliefs and heart.

This constant push and pull between them is addictive and I have to say that I really enjoyed the strength, determination and sheer power that the couple shows. Despite their dark history, it appears that beneath the exterior the main characters share something unyielding - a bond that only solidifies with every obstacle that they face.

Vampires are my favourite dark creatures, so naturally I loved every bit of this aspect of the story. In addition, there are elements of magic, sacred rituals and of course, epic battles.

This story is beautifully crafted as it grips you from the start and takes you on quite the journey as the characters navigate through the dangerous situation they find themselves in and at the same time it portrays the type of love story that has no bounds. Sincerely recommending it to those that enjoy their vampire romance with complex political structures, well developed characters and a story that engages you from the very first chapter.

This book takes off pretty quickly in the beginning. It gives us action, betrayal, and some suspense.
We also get drama and some spice.
I will admit, i wasn't a big fan of Eleanna in the beginning. She did slowly grow on me and I'm happy to say we did see some positive changes.
I really liked Alexandru.
I think he was really good for Eleanna.
Overall, I enjoyed it.

Red Queen dark, Gothic standalone and ends in a HEA.

This has to be one of my favorite books from Harper A Brooks. The worldbuilding is absolutely fantastic and quite unique. We also have political intrigue and an ambitious and villainous FMC, which is a breath of fresh air. The spice and tension between Eleanna and Alexandru was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. It was slow at times, but definitely enjoyed this one!!

Taking her seat at the throne, Eleanne would address her people for the first time making sure they understood that she ruled now. They would honor the old ways, feeding on humans, as their right as vampires, betrayal would be punished and loyalty demanded. There were a few dissenters who had objected but before she could address them Catarina stepped forward. She challenged Eleanne’s right to sit on the throne. Catarina had brought an army with her while before her eyes those Eleanne had thought were allies became the enemy. The few loyal soldiers who stood with her were soon cut down and she barely escaped with her life.
Seeking help to regain her throne, she went to General Alexandru. As a warrior, he had the knowledge, strength and an army that could help her. However, he had his own conditions. She would share his bed and when she was returned to the throne he would rule beside her as King, not her Consort. Was this his retribution for the past? They had been betrothed before he decided to end it without bothering to explain why. She agreed but was plotting to prevent him from sharing the throne. There would be hard fought battles, journeys to discover a means to end Catarina’s control and a spicy romance that had begun years before.
As a vampire queen, Eleanna Cordon, had been schooled by her father, a viscous cruel man. He had managed to eradicate any soft-heartedness he’d seen in her. At first read Eleanna sounded like “it’s my way or the gallows.” As a main character, she appeared more villain than savior. The dual point of view at first didn’t make Eleanna’s personality much more palatable however, she began to change as Alexandru forced her to take a harder look at her choices. He came off as a strong, tough warrior who was concerned about his people and after centuries recognized the need to change their way of life. His concern for Eleanne at first came off as tough, no nonsense, it soon showed that he still had feelings for her. As the story progressed under his guidance, she began to see why the old ways were wrong.
In the first part of the book, we saw more of Alexandru and Eleanne’s romance in the bedroom and learned some of the strategies they were planning. However, after learning of Catarina's weakness the story’s pace picked up. The fighting began in earnest while deviling more into the heart of the tale. The two parts, the romance and the struggle for power, began to merge answering questions I had. The story has intriguing characters, dialogue that made me feel like the characters were coming to life for me. I was also interested in hearing more about Catarina’s reign which simply told us she was merciless and cruel with few details.
The story had a good premise and the storyline as it played out simply had me wanting more. I wanted to learn more about the secrets behind Catarina’s rise to power and the way she reigned over the people. I would have liked to hear more about Eleanne and Alexandru’s past as well. I truly enjoyed all the characters; I loved that even some of the secondary characters became an integral part of the storyline for me. The writing is well done it pulled me into the story making me care about what was happening and why. For this reason, I gave it four stars.

Thanks to Booksprout.co for providing me with an ARC Kindle copy of Red Queen by Harper A. Brooks, in exchange for an honest review.

Note: Spoilers may appear within, please read at your own risk.

The Red Queen throws us into a whirlwind of betrayal and simmering tension as Eleanna, the rightful heir to the Sagori crown, finds her throne stolen by the ruthless Catarina. Eleanna’s world crumbles as supposed allies switch sides, leaving her blindsided and seething with rage. Enter General Alexandru—the man who betrayed her once before in both love and war—now her best shot at reclaiming what’s hers. But his help comes with strings attached, and Eleanna isn’t sure she’s willing to pay the price. After all, once bitten, twice shy, right?

At first, I thought this book was going to be a majority of spicy scenes, with the fiery tension between Eleanna and Alexandru dominating the first half. They’re constantly circling each other in this magnetic clash of wills and then ending up in bed, and while the looming threat of Catarina is mentioned, it feels more like a plot device to keep them together than the driving force of the story. Thankfully, the focus does shift in the latter half, pulling us back into the high-stakes game of reclaiming the crown.

One of the pivotal moments in Eleanna’s plight is when she discovers the secret to Catarina’s strength—a charmed pendant that gives her preternatural resilience. Destroying it, however, requires a shopping list of supernatural items so impossible, it feels almost comical. A Phoenix’s tear? Sure, that’s not going to be easy. But then… Eleanna and her crew just stroll up to the Phoenix, politely ask for a tear, and walk away with it like it’s no big deal. Really? That moment left me scratching my head. It’s hard to take the quest seriously when the impossible tasks turn out to be as simple as running errands.

Now, while the ease of Eleanna’s questing felt a bit underwhelming, I will give the book credit where it’s due. The battles with Catarina and her forces don’t always go to plan, which adds some much-needed tension and reminds us that our heroes aren’t invincible. Still, when you can gather legendary artifacts without breaking a sweat, the scale of the threat feels uneven.

One thing that did surprise me: this book breaks away from the typical romance formula. In most romance-driven stories, there’s that mid-book setback where the main couple’s trust falls apart, putting them back at square one, or at least seriously questioning themselves and each other. Not so here. Eleanna and Alexandru actually grow together without any major relationship sabotage, which was refreshing, even if it meant missing out on some of that emotional roller coaster.

All in all, The Red Queen is an enjoyable read—entertaining enough to keep you turning the pages but not exactly groundbreaking. It’s got tension, romance, and a dash of political intrigue, though I wouldn’t say it left a lasting impression. Worth a read, just not one I’ll be shouting about from the rooftops.

I’ve read many books by this author, and loved most of them. But this one ….

Loved it…..

It starts off with a coup! And the Queen is running away …..

Vampire Queen Eleanna, i have to admit, I wasn’t a huge fan of hers at the beginning (not your usual/typical vampire) She was all for using humans at cattle! “We are the dominant species” blah blah blah!! So I wasn’t too bothered when she was overthrown by another vampire! It’s also why Eleanna and Alexandru finally broke up (story there, but I’m not telling 🤐)

Both sides from main characters are told. (Becoming a favourite of mine if done correctly) Battles are graphic, but not overly gross. The story flows really well and at a steady pace.

Eleanna is on her way to Alexandru, she’s going to ask for his help in reclaiming her throne. Is he going to help her? 🤐

I liked how Alexandru never backed down. He was also still nursing a broken heart after Eleanna broke off their relationship. He’s guards were loyal and knew he was loyal to them. I liked how he could banter with his friend Ivan, but still pull rank when needed.

Would I have liked it if she hadn’t have had a change of heart? Would it have made for a different type of read if the MFC had stayed the same? Through her journey to taking back her throne, Eleanna discovers herself and what she actually wants (Her father’s beliefs became her own) her quest to obtain items in which she uses to hopefully take back the throne, makes her look at herself in a different light.

Will there be more in this series? Or will it be just a standalone? I’m not sure, but it might be nice to revisit this world again at some point.

Queen of the Damned vibes (loved that movie) where she’s not a nice vampire, at first 😉

There are Triggers, so please read the warnings.

Definitely a book I’d recommend.

Red Queen by Harper A. Brooks is an enthralling journey through a gothic world filled with dark romance, fierce ambition, and a vampire queen hell-bent on reclaiming her throne. Eleanna Cordon, the exiled Red Queen, is a powerful and vengeful character who refuses to stay defeated. Her escape from her own castle, heart still pulsing with a thirst for revenge, hooked me right from the beginning. This story isn’t just about survival; it’s about a queen taking back what’s hers, whatever the cost.

The dynamic between Eleanna and her ex-lover, Alexandru Amanar, is a masterclass in tension and chemistry. Alexandru, a rival vampire king, brings just the right balance of danger and allure, and their rocky, blood-soaked past adds layers to their alliance. Their fiery, unpredictable partnership is full of fierce confrontations, old wounds, and an undeniable attraction that they can’t escape. Their history brims with betrayal and desire, making every interaction between them electric.

Brooks excels in crafting a rich, atmospheric setting that feels as haunting as Eleanna’s own dark desires. The gothic world-building pulls you into the shadows and keeps you there, wrapped in mystery, treachery, and passion. Eleanna’s ruthlessness as she stakes her enemies and battles her way back to power makes her an unforgettable protagonist. She’s unapologetically fierce, willing to ally with Alexandru despite everything, showing just how far she’ll go for her throne.

For readers who crave a strong, complex heroine, scorching romance, and a plot brimming with suspense and betrayal, Red Queen is a must-read. Harper A. Brooks delivers a standalone vampire romance that’s intense, seductive, and absolutely unforgettable. Eleanna is the kind of queen who rises from ashes—and I was riveted every step of the way.

I would like to thank Booksprout for allowing me to read and review this book.

I truly enjoyed reading Red Queen. It was a dark, spicy read with adventure.

Caution spoilers ahead, read at your own risk.

Coming in strong at the beginning, we meet Eleanna Cordon. Fierce, brutal and dangerous, she has yet to claim the throne as heir to the Sagori family, wanting to continue rules of old.

Introducing Catarina, rival, enemy, and spiteful, she wants to take over the throne and rule the vampires, speaking for those who don't wish to go back to rules of old.

The tention between these two women is aggressive and palpable, jealousy and rage, deep seated within them.

As we enter Alexandru, former lover and fiance; strong, strategic, harsh in his expression towards Eleanna. In asking for his help, there are stings attached, keeping her close to him.

The dynamic of dominance, power, sexual tention, and emotions that transpire between them is raw and intense. It evolves with them as we go forward as they grow and develop.

The fight sequences are beautifully written, and the places described creating pictures as you read.

As we continue forward and learn of the way to beat Catarina to take back a throne and save their race, the journey is lovely, as they head out to find the magic ingredients to help defeat her, it feels a little fast paced and a little too easy in obtaining what they need.

However, it is beautifully crafted and has an awesome storyline and plot, with everything you need.

Red Queen by Harper A Brooks is a dark, vampire romance with a gothic feel to it. Which meant I was immediately on board to read this book. For the most part I did enjoy this book, I mean the way it started with such an intensity that had me hooked and invested. But I will say I found my attention wavering a bit as the pacing slowed down. (Don’t get me wrong it does pick back up) The characters of Eleanna and Alexandru took me on a bit of a trip. I did like Eleanna’s growth throughout the book and lessons that she learned. I will mention that she is a hard character to get behind in the beginning with her way of thinking. I could relate to not wanting to be someone else and do your own thing. Alexandru I enjoyed his strong yet more softer side but more than that I liked he wanted more and to move forward. I liked reading about them coming together and developing both their relationship and themselves. But two of my favorite things were the political intrigue and the spice. Both of them I thought was done well. The descriptions of characters and places were written well even though the pacing felt a bit off. The plot was interesting and entertaining; not to mention there’s vampires. Overall I did enjoy reading this book plus it’s a standalone. If you enjoy a book that has betrayal, political intrigue and romance then this is the book for you.

The story immediately starts with action. A big battle scene to draw you in and let me just say, it worked on me. However, it then slows way down and at some points, I struggled to stay engaged, but picked back up near the halfway point. It was worth it to push through and finish the book though.

Eleanna is a very strong woman, but it took me a while to like her (never disliked her, just didn't like her either). She's not a good person, in fact, she seems cruel, even in her own POV. She wants to return to the old ways and it seems more that most vampires do not want to return to that way of life. She's power hungry and determined to return to her throne at any cost. Even at the cost of her own happiness, which is frustrating to read.

Alexandru is a general with centuries of experience, he's also strong, but he's also softer and wants to move forward like it seems many vampires want. I can't say that I liked him immediately, but I did want him to succeed in softening Eleanna (helping her to be less cruel, but not diminishing her strength).

Eleanna, is the new queen, by her Sagori birth right and as she takes her throne, she is betrayed by Catarina and ends up running for her life. She runs to her former lover Alexandru a man that broke her heart. Alexandru agrees to help her with a few conditions. Can Eleanna fulfill those conditions. When Eleanna has to gather, certain magical properties to break the special enhanced heart that Catarina has that makes her invincible. Can Eleanna and Alexandru work together as a team, amongst their need of each other but really learn to trust, in the amount of political intrigued that they both have to work through against Catarina, Eleanna finds herself changing wanting to throw of the old ways. Can Alexandru see she is changing? Can Eleanna survive Catarina second attempt on her life. The growth of Eleanna’s character is done with amazing finesse. I really appreciated how the author showed a strong woman is to be appreciated and that a truly confident man can find that as alluring as any pretty face.

Eleana is ready to take her throne, making proclamations about going back to the old ways where humans were no more than cattle and bloodletting was necessary. This is the same mindset that drove her betrothed Alexandru away. But an uprising led by tyrant Catarina has caused Eleana to flee, and flee straight into the arms of her ex Alexandru. With promises and rules made, they find a way to fight against Catarina and possibly find a way back into each other's arms.

This is what a good Gothic romance is about. There's a perfect blend of vengefulness and romance that give you the best action with some great scenes. Eleana's character starts off a little on the crazy overlord side, but manages to have a tiny bit of redemption without going full hero mode. I also really liked Catarina's character and how well developed she was. The author made it hard to defeat her and it really made you guess how the story would actually end since there seemed to be no feasible way out.

Gothic vampire romance

This was a great dark gothic romance from Harper Brooks set in the vampire realm where Eleanna has just become queen. When she tries to take the crown and demand her people uphold the “old” ways, she is met with a coup where she ends up having to flee for her life. Now she has to reclaim her throne, and the only person she knows that can truly help her is her ex, Alexandru, who broke their engagement and her heart.

His only request is that they start sharing a bed again and that they will get married but with him as a KING and not just as a consort. Since she needs his help, she grudgingly agrees. They have an interesting relationship – not quite trusting each other but not able to stay away either. Their dynamic and relationship rebuilding was a bit slow – but overall, very good.

I enjoyed this book, although I will say that there were parts in the middle that felt a little sluggish, but the heat those two gave off was enough to start a fire.

Great book!

While the story started off with a battle, it was hard to keep focused with the distracting writing style. It came across very melodramatic and affected with multiple similes and metaphors being used in the same sentence making for a very over done feel to the text. The story itself fell a bit flat in the middle, with a quest for "impossible" to find ingredients that ended up being procured with no more challenge or strife than a basic grocery list. The spice came up regularly but was pretty repetitive and by the end I was just done with both main characters. Only one of the extended main characters ended up killed in battle, despite massive odds and dozens of unnamed deaths littering the various fight sequences. Even then, she was only spared a single sentence to sum up her contribution.
It's a quick and easy read, but if you can't get past the style - it's not worth sticking with the story line.

Gah! I loved this book so much. I've read a few different vampire books recently and honestly, this one really hit the spot for me in all the right ways. Eleanna Cordon has been attacked, runoff from her home and had her throne stolen but she isn't going to go down without a fight, and a fight is what she must do to reclaim what is hers. While Eleanna isn't exactly the hero of the story and pushes the boundaries of where the line is, she has a lot to live up to because of her father.

She finds herself having to ask for help from someone she never thought she would really have to speak to again. The whole story has so many levels and emotions to it that it made it a really enjoyable read. There is love, betrayal, and in some ways enemies to lovers when it comes to Eleanna and Alexandru.

This book for me has some of my favourite fight scenes and I love how kick b*tt Eleanna is and how she can handle herself. A fab read from start to finish.

This is my first book by this author and I enjoyed it.

The book immediately kicks off with a battle as Eleanna takes to the throne so I was drawn in from the very beginning, I did notice that my attention started to dwindle in the middle of the book when the pace dipped but the action picked up again and it grabbed my attention again.

I found Eleanna hard to warm too but I think that was just a bit of a personality clash rather than any fault of the author as she was well written. I did love Alexandru though, both his strong commanding General side and the softer side he held for Eleanna.

The world building was well written and gave me a real feel for the dark gothic winter setting.

Overall I enjoyed the book, it has betrayal, battles, political intrigue, spicy scenes, Vampires and magic, what's not to enjoy.. it has everything you'd want from a fantasy romance.

This was quite a different read for me as I don't generally lean towards dark gothic vampire romances but I must admit I am glad I took a step outside my usual reading for this!
The book starts with Eleanna being ousted from her throne when a rebellion takes place headed by Eleanna's life long enemy Caterina. Forced to flee, or die she seeks refuge with Alexandru, the vampire who broke her heart years ago. Forming a somewhat reluctant alliance they join forces to reclaim the throne putting their lives and their hearts at stake (okay I was always going to throw in a Stake pun with a vampire romance!)
Great book, lots of action, battles, some magic thrown in, quests and heaps of romance and enough heat to singe your eyebrows! Add to that it is a standalone book so no waiting for the ending, its all wrapped up in the one book. What more could anyone want?

The book focuses mostly on two things - the relationship between Alexandru and Eleanna, and the cruel and brutal power battles between the two potential vampire queens, Eleanna and Catarina. Practically most of the book is clashes, insults, mocking, arrogance, violence, drama, and a lot of heat. There is observable character development in Eleanna, while most of the other characters stay true to themselves and unchanged the whole time. It is a fast read, although I found it sometimes repetitive and could imagine the book being shorter, nevertheless it fits the label of "dark gothic vampire romance" perfectly and if fast, not demanding read with lots and lots of steamy scenes (and battle for dominance in the bedroom) is what you are searching for, then please, pick this one by all means :)

Cheers for Red Queen by an amazing Author. I loved reading this book it was so amazing and filled with of Mega Action that I couldn't put it down. I was pulled in taken on a superb journey into the life of the FMC Eleanna Cordon who is next inline to to be the Vampire Queen of the Cordon family.
I was enchanted and intrigued by what transpired from the beginning to the end. If what happened to Eleanna happened to me on her coronation day to be Queen happened to me... I would of done exactly what she did... run for my life.
Alexandru Amanar is the MMC and has all the feels for Eleanna and more. His strength and power was felt throughout the story along with his caring love for Eleanna.
So, if you love Hot Vampire Commanders, Strong Leading Female Rulers and Amazing fight scenes then this is the book for you.

This standalone novel is a dark Gothic vampire romance.

When I started reading, I was drawn into the atmosphere, and the world created by the author. The two lead characters were Eleanna and Alexandru, and both were powerful characters with a strong presence on the page. I felt quite drawn in by them, and it was as though I had to take notice of them.

This was a spicy read, but I did feel the romance too, and I felt there was some interesting character development.

I have reading moods, and I think this is a genre that I only read when the mood takes me, but I did enjoy it.

This book took us on an honest to goodness journey. While Eleanna had to not only learn her enemy's weakness and defeat her, she also had to learn to grow as a leader and a person. I have to tell you she drove me NUTS at the beginning of this book. She hit many bumps along the way. I think the only way she could grow into the queen the realm needed was to have someone like Alexandru by her side. His method of coaching her unusual and decidedly very spicy and sexy. Through all the trials and tribulations, Eleanna grew into a person that I could've supported as a leader if I were in this fantasy world.
I think my favorite part of the book was the language, especially during battle. Some of the statements people made when fighting were comical.

Stand-alone story of vampire politics and passion. A very enjoyable read even with the dark elements in play. Definitely spicy and full of action and drama right from the beginning.
I felt a but ambiguous toward the FMC at first. She’s pretty dark gray as a character but she learns some things about herself along the journey and I liked her by the end. I really like the MMC all along. He’s her perfect foil and helps her along the path to redemption and reclamation of her throne.
I would definitely check out the trigger warnings before reading but if nothing turns you off, then read on and enjoy the ride. This author consistently offers excellent books and I think you’ll enjoy reading this one. Highly recommended.

Eleanna-A new queen stuck in the past where darkness reigned, and blood was shed for sport.

Alexandru- A general among vampires, who walked away from Eleanna when he was sure she was stuck in the past.

The two collide again when an uprising results in Eleanna fleeing for her life. Will Eleanna continue on her path to that which resulted in her loss or can Alexandru show her a different world to create?

This is a standalone with a dominate male, and strong female with a hard to letting go of control. When the two collide, sparks fly...literally. This is a vampire romance so expect blood to be present, along with high action scenes, and steamy connections.

Spice: 2.5/5

Red Queen introduces us to Vampire Queen Eleanna. About to take over her father's throne and marry General Alexandru, she is ready to have it all. That is till her throne is stolen out from under her by Catarina. Now on the run, Eleanna only has one person to turn to, Alexandru. Unfortunately, he is not willing to help as readily as she would have hoped given their history and she must come to terms with accepting what he has in store for her, which includes her obedience to him. The feistiness and banters between these two were hilarious, and this lead to some very steamy moments between the two. The action and suspense with Eleanna working to get her throne back added an extra element to the story. All in all, this was an interesting standalone gothic read full of bite!

Red Queen was an interesting read! It took me a few chapters to really dive in, but I found myself immersed in this world in no time! The character development and distinct personalities are really well done, the world building is fantastic , the drama, the action ( fight scenes were great!) the spice, it was clear the authour’s attention to detail was really strong with this book. This was an intricate story that I felt the authour did a really good job telling in a clear, well paced voice. Eleanne was a character that took me a bit to connect with, that being said, she was one that definitely grew on me and Alexandru was one I liked quite quickly. They take us on quite the adventure in this book and I enjoyed it all! I am looking forward to more by this authour!

This book had an incredible potential, and, although it's alright with many interesting elements, it just seemed to lack something for me. Perhaps it was just not the right time for me to read this (lots going on IRL) but, I don't know, it was just OK.
The premise of the story is incredible, and what made me curious about the story. It had it's moments of "will they or won't they?" both in the sense of betrayal and jumping each other's bones.
And vampires are my favourite type of supernatural, so I had high expectations.
The characters are complex, and it's gratifying to see that sort of growth in a character. Maybe after another read, my review would be more positive...this might be just the book you need right now!

The story starts with Eleanna (The Red Queen) about to Assendon to her throne when out of the blue she experiences a coup and escapes by the skin of her teeth.
With very little opinion she is forced to seek help from Alexandru her ex who she no longer trusts.
The book follows Eleanna's mission to regain her throne.
I initially struggled with Eleanna she really didn't seem to have any redeeming features but she develops and grows during the story and eventually ends up fairly likeable.
There is plenty to keep you absorbed in this book and I really enjoyed it.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Harper gives us an awesome standalone book!! The story of Eleanna and Alexandru is one of past love, anger and darkness that defines their current relationship. When her ascension is disrupted and overthrown by Caterina and Eleanna has to go on the run, she runs to Alexandru. This sets the scene for the rest of the book as they work to restore Eleanna but an improved version of her on the throne. To find out what happens, dive into this well written book with complex characters and plot twists that keep you guessing and turning pages throughout. I enjoyed reading this story and highly recommend it. Don't miss out on this book!!
