Monster Security Agency #4

Guarded by the Kraken: Monster Security Agency

Rate this book
A kraken, a scientist, and a love under pressure….

As a kraken bodyguard, I rarely get human clients. When I do, the only way to protect them is to form a telepathic bond. I don’t like it, but after my wife’s death years ago I’ve learned to build an impenetrable shield around myself and my emotions, until I meet my newest client. She's a scientist investigating an ancient relic on the ocean floor. The abyssal plane is no place for humans, but the job is the job, so I shut off my soul, bury my secrets, and link our minds.

The flood of her emotions takes me by surprise. I thought I would be in charge, but our bond is stripping us both bare, layer after layer, until she can see my bleeding wounds, and I can taste her unspoken desires.

We cannot be together. We can’t even touch. She breathes air, and I live at high pressure at the bottom of the ocean. Our feelings bring us nothing but torment, and I know once she’s on dry land again, I’ll have to sever our bond.

But when she’s betrayed by the people she’s working for, and her life is in danger–I will not rest until she’s safe in all of my arms.

Monster Security Agency is the most elite bodyguard service in the world. These monster bodyguards are lethal, powerful, and determined to protect their clients at all costs. They shouldn't fall in love with their principals, but if they do? Things are bound to explode.

Here come spicy, romantic, and action-packed tales by your favorite paranormal and sci-fi romance Cassie Alexander, Eden Ember, Layla Fae, and Cara Wylde. Dive into the world of the Monster Security Agency.

3.5✨ (Rounded down for GR)
2.25🌶️

Guarded by the Kraken by Cassie Alexander is the fifth entry to the Monster Security Agency series, which features a different interspecies couple—typically a human female and alien/supernatural male—as the main romantic pair in an interconnected world.

This wasn’t my favorite of the series; it was definitely a case of it being OK, but knowing it could’ve been great. It started out fine, both main characters were introduced and you instantly had a feel for both of them due to differing tragic backstories. The MMC lost his first mate and unborn child in an undersea natural disaster, and the FMC had lost her sister to breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy herself for prevention. This was the first time I’ve ever seen a character with the BRCA gene, something close to home for me.

This was a second chance romance for both characters, but it was more than 3 years in the past for the MMC, while the FMC only learned of her impending divorce over the course of the first few pages, and is still technically married through most if not all of the story. The “ex” was an ass and there was really no love lost between them, but it was a little weird of a choice to not have her already be divorced or something similar.

Even in spite of the somber backstories of the main characters, this entry has an overall sweeter tone than some of the other entries, which had more intense feelings to the romance and spice. However, just wait for that epilogue. If the spice seemed more minimal compared to the others in the series, the epilogue more than makes up for it in terms of intensity.

To end, I wanted to touch on the pacing issues the book experienced for me, which kept it from being rated higher even though it was a pretty solid entry to the series. The beginning of the book sets up both characters experiencing romantic heartache and loss in different ways, whether through the death of a prior mate or an impending divorce. I thought this would mean the story was setting up a slow burn romance, with both characters having to relearn to open their hearts and trust. With the page count being longer too, I figured there would be room for more development. However, this was not the case. A bonding happened almost immediately for the MMC, and he felt and acted in love with the FMC soon after. There was a little resistance from the FMC, but it felt like she fell in love so fast after two. I know they were two lonely hearts seeking love, but I still would’ve appreciated more development before the love and declarations happened. It was sweet and fulfilling, just too fast, especially considering their past hurts.

Big focus on past romantic heartbreak, love lost, health issues, pregnancy and lack of pregnancy.

It also comes through in the spice with breeding, so that’s a big theme, particularly in that epilogue🤭

I've never read a book about this species before... So, I went in very blind with a lot of curiosity.
I was not disappointed.

I LOVE this story! It was romantic, sweet, sexy and VERY erotic... But it also has clear tones of great loss, redemption and blessed re-awakenings of the soul and the mind.

It also has a very scary secondary plot. Fantasy and a bit of violence. This story definitely pulls more at your heartstrings and imagination more than anything. The way that it is written keeps you engaged throughout and very curious and worried, how things will turn out for Cepharius and Elle..

I am so in love with Cepharius! And I love he and Elle together. I love Elle as well.. I'm so happy for how things turned out for her, for them both. These two and their circumstances will break your heart a bit, but their reemergence in these things will make you proud and have your heart soaring for them.

I would DEFINITELY recommend this read to anyone who loves this genre, but especially for those who don't. This is a story that NEEDS to be read, loved on and appreciated. I read this through KU and I'm totally going to buy it now..

This book alongside the others in this series are all currently on KU.
I have the first 3-books on my Kindle already, but this book is the first one I've read in this series. I was not lost at all.. It appears that you can read these books out of order and not be lost on anything occurring.

This 11-book series is also written by 3 different authors- Cassie Alexander (I'm loving her), Layla Fae (have not read her work yet), and Cara Wylde (have not read her work either)

“May the force be with you!”

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 🖤💙💜❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏🌍
Character development: 🙂🥰😎😄
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The Hero: Cepharius (a.k.a. Ceph) - he is a Kraken monster, brother to the king, who works for the Monster Security Agency, as a bodyguard to supernatural beings, usually manitills who are in danger from humans. He got the job a the MSA in order to get various intelligence from the “two legged” species. He was mated in the past and lost his mate Kaoni in an undersea tsunami when she wouldn’t abandon her egg, and the brick walls of their home caved in on her their child. Another reason he left his home to guard the manitills for three years is because the Kraken can hear each others' thoughts through the quah (telepathic link), and he couldn’t take their pity.

The heroine: Elle - she is a historian and linguist for ancient monster civilizations, and she just got a job working on a project in the Calish trench, deep in the ocean. She is at a dangerously deep and mysterious ocean institute funded by a billionaire named Mr. Marlow. She is researching something that could lead to a huge scientific discovery, perhaps of a new language from an ancient civilization. Elle recently had a double mastectomy because she was predisposed to breast cancer. She found out when sister suddenly died of it. Since she no longer wants to have kids for fear of giving them the BRCA gene, her husband left her.

The Story: Ceph almost never guarded humans as a part of his job, but Elle needed undersea security due to the nature of the discovery. The only way to guard her is to create a telepathic bond between them by touching her. He had avoided touching any sentient beings for years, and now that he was back home, the king asked him to do this for them. He agreed on the promise of the King that when the job was over, he would be allowed to go away alone forever.

The world building was terrific. It was never so known how dangerous it was for Elle to be down in the undersea installation as since the implosion of the Titan submersible down near the wreck of the Titanic in 2023. The pressure that deep has a lot of issues and the book even described the fact that she had to breathe helium because of the pressure and that made her voice really high.

I liked the telepathic bond between the two main characters. Elle didn’t like the fact that Ceph could read her mind at the start, so she kept trying to think of innocuous things like small white dogs and english tea sets. With regards to the world building, you could tell the author did her research into linguistics as well, the research Elle was doing was very detailed.

I have to admit, that I probably wouldn’t have tried this book if I hadn’t already read and loved a few other books in this series by Cassie Alexander. I am not into creatures that look more animal than human, and I don’t like the whole sea creature, tentacle thing that some people seem to like. Though I do love monster romance and since this was the only other book in this series on audiobook, aside from Guarded by the Spider, which I also didn’t expect to enjoy, but ended up liking, so I grabbed it. Anyway, I picture the monster as more of an aquaman looking guy. Even so, I was surprised at how quickly I got interested in the story, and from then on, I wanted them to have a romantic relationship.

This audiobook was done in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Jonathon Lake and Avery Caris. They did a terrific job. Jonathon Lake has a deep voice that works very well for a monster romance. Avery Caris has a soft, feminine sounding voice that is perfect for a romance heroine. She is very expressive, and I really enjoyed the narration.

Title: Guarded By The Kraken
Author: Cassie Alexander
Stars: 5/5⭐️
Spice: 5/5 🌶
Spoilers: No
This Book Left Me Feeling:
😭🥰😍🥵🔥🌊
Genre:
Monster Romance
Tropes:
Bodyguard, Loss, Mutual Grief, Body Positivity, Tentacles, Br€€ding.

About The Book:
Guarded By The Kraken is a monster romance with sci-fi vibes. It's a story filled to the brim with love and positivity and an amazing message of overcoming loss while still embracing what was lost. It may make you cry along the way but the HEA is way worth it!

What Will Stay With Me:
The spice WAS INSANE! You could boil water with the heat inside this book.

Review:
Holy Macaroni.
I do not know how she does it, but every single time Cassie Alexander releases a book I love it more than the last.
Every single time I'm gushing about it being my new favourite and I will just never get enough of the way she writes.

Okay, about the actual book. The characters are insanely loveable, flawed and complex beings and I would read ten books of them together. The world being built in this series is absolutely brilliant. There's so much going on and so many moving parts, but none of it feels forced or like there's info dumping.

I love that this dipped into sci-fi a bit because that's my favourite genre and it was so so well done. I want to find out what happened with all that after the events of the book!

In short (before I get sucked into detailing every single part of the book and the endless list of reasons I loved it) I loved this and I would 20/10 recommend this to anyone who has even once had a fleeting thought of "ohh tentacles 👀"

Well now I just want my own Kraken. I’m pretty sure I fell for Ceph around the same time he fell for Elle *heavy sigh*

Yes, I know Ms Cassie said it’s heavy on pregnancy, but honestly, it’s not. Yes the loss of an egg (child) is mentioned and yes the longing for children is mentioned, it’s more of a highlight to the story… but it does have Breeding Kink, and boy does it have that 🥵

And fates bless them aliens for that one scene *heavily fans my face* …yes you read that right .. BUT don’t jump to conclusions, they’re a big part of the plot, but not in the apocalypse alien invasion sense so calm down.

This book does have some emotionally heavy triggers, Ms Callie mentions them, a they are a major plot driver in the beginning of the book. There is a warning in the book. So be aware.

Let’s see if I can sum this up. Ceph is a kraken hired to protect a scientist , Elle, while she does classified research at the bottom of the Georgia trench. It’s so classified, she doesn’t even know what it is until she gets there… and by there , I mean a fancy underwater facility at the bottom of the ocean.

She has to bond with the kraken to be able to communicate telepathically, and during the process, unbeknownst to her, Ceph bonds with her (as in falls in love/ finds his fated partner).

Here are some of my favourite highlights 😏

As a courting present this dude makes her replica dildo’s of his “pumping arm*… 3 in fact, different sizes, cuz his can change depending on how *coughs* full he is. And there’s a ring on the biggest one ….

When they eventually get to touch…Elle finds out what that ring is for…… and then… then… the top part moves 🫣🥵 anyway… it’s HOTTT!!! I have got to get me one of those!

Ceph is protective, devoted, romantic… and he uses her mind to figure out what she wants when she asks him to talk dirty to her… I mean… COME ON! 🥵

This book has a little bit of everything. Drama, suspense, sci-fi, paranormal elements, action, tragedy, spice… you name it. I mean Ms Cassie had me crying at some point. But my absolute favourite part is during the epilogue 🤤 but I won’t spoil that little gem for you *giggles*

*there are some minor editing errors in the ARC I received but they do not retract from my honest opinion of the book in its totality *

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Guarded by the Kraken is one story in the Monster Security Agency series, which comprises many different authors, all writing smutty monster romance. I have reviewed another MSA book of Cassie's, Guarded by the Spider. It has the same narrators.

Elle is hired to go below to the deepest trench in the Ocean for a science research project. She is given the chance to discover a potential new language, race of monsters, etc. There is a large metal mechanism at the bottom of the ocean, and Elle is tasked to discover its secrets! She is assigned a body guard that is from the Kraken population. Ceph is required to bond with her in order to keep her safe, however, he ends up mating with her.

The two begin their adventure together, working together to solve whatever this puzzle is. Meanwhile, they get to know each other better. One thing I really appreciate about Ceph is, even though the mating was accidental, he does not force her into wanting it. He would let her return to the land if she chooses to do so.

I did not see all the twists and turns that happened. I constantly wondered a LOT of things while listening to this story. My brain kept working to find how this was going to work. Elle and Ceph could not even touch. She could not leave the science center without a special suit. I will let you read for yourself what happens, but you will not be disappointed.

I highly recommend reading this book via the audiobook. The narrators are class acts. They make you feel a part of the story. At one point, I thought my chest was going to explode, others I sad cried, I happy cried, I laughed and giggled...I kicked my feet happily.

Definitely check your triggers, there is violence, also some br33ding kink in there. Spoiler: Epilogue contains the pregnancy, so if you don't want that, skip the epilogue.

'You have always carried oceans in you Elle'.

Ceph is dealing with personal loss when he is given a new body guard job, this time its protecting a human. Elle is task to investigate a relic in the ocean, that is secret to her fellow crew members. But due to its location she is given protection by a kraken. The pair must go through a 'mating' procedure to be able to communicate. This also allows them to get to know one another & unbeknownist to them both, start to fall for each other. It may not be what they each were looking for, but it may be what they both need.

Love how Cassie is able to weave such heartfelt stories, that you fall for the main characters & cheer for them to find love in one another. It may not be the most conventional partnership, but enjoyed as the story unraveled & they found a way to be together. And as always knows how to bring the heat. Highly recommend for monster / tentacle romance lovers.

I listened to the audiobook. I loved the female narrator, but had trouble at times understanding the male narrator. Barring that, these two did an amazing job bring this story together.

It was a short, funny (😅) and fast paced book. I liked the way everything under the water was described, but the rest of it? 😅 the tentacles and all the suckers on them, and the pumping arm that just comes off and grows back later might have traumatized me for a while. It was very men-in-black-ish, with the aliens and the space craft, and the human villain. If you love it that’s great, but I guess monster romances are just not for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

Holy shitballs Batman.
I couldn’t tell you the last time I read something THAT GOOD.

The world building, the character development, THE PLOT AND THE SPICE 👏🏽 The smidge of slowburn that turned into a roaring fire. 🥵
The way these two characters mesh is so organic that you don’t even consider this book as sci-fi/fantasy. Their romance doesn’t feel rushed or juvenile or overdone. It’s just…✨perfect✨.
There’s no miscommunication, no drama, no alphahole shit and no *I dOnT nEeD nO mAn* hyper-independent FMC.
The love story is 10/10 and AT NO POINT are you able to foresee the future these two could have as being a possibility because they’re completely incompatible.
It’ll take you by surprise and when it really picks up you won’t be able to put down.
I promise.
I was SO MAD at the end because I want more.
I would easily read a series of just these two together.
Add it to your TBR right now, because tentacles. 🤣👀🫣🐙

A meeting of the minds

Actual rating: 4.5 stars

This is the first Monster Security book I dove into, so I didn’t quite know what to expect, but wowza!

The love story between Elle and Cepharius is one of those special stories that resonates as deep as the ocean in which they first meet. By virtue of Cepharius’ telepathic communication, their connection is a mental one. And when two people fall in love with their minds before their bodies & hearts it’s a wondrous thing. The way they learn to work together and trust and love again was awe inspiring. So, by the time they make a bodily connection the fact that he’s a kraken and the question of “how is that gonna work?” simply doesn’t matter anymore. And even with the mechanics of kraken-on-human lovemaking, wow that was intense.

There were quite a few formatting errors and extra words peppered throughout the Kindle version that kept pulling me out of the story, hence my deduction of a half-star. But beyond that I was pleasantly surprised and will definitely be reading more from this collection.

please note that the trigger warnings and topes/themes may contain spoilers
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
HEA: HEA
POV: dual 1st person POV
Narration: dual narration
spice: several open-door spicy scenes
TWs: bribery, mentions of cancer and mastectomy, death of a child (recounted), death of a sibling (recounted, breast cancer), death of a spouse (recounted), depictions of deep water, divorce, grief, kidnapping, murder
Kinky Content: breeding kink, masturbation, mutual masturbation, oral, praise, prehensile tentacles, sex toys, voyeurism
standalone: book 4 of Monster Security Agency series
final thoughts: this was such an unexpected read! There were plot twists left and right and I was left guessing right up through the epilogue. The world building was great, the storyline was interesting, and the romance was so sweet. As with most monster romances, there were some funny miscommunications and word choices that had me laughing.
This was a highly emotional read that didn’t feel emotionally taxing with the rest of the plot happening and plenty of pop culture references to keep your mind light. While the triggers do follow the characters through most of the book, it was not overwhelming, and the triggering scenes were nondescriptive.

Both narrators were able to capture the characters so well without their opposite character voices being cringy

*As of 8/2/25, I am no longer a part of Cassie Alexander’s ARC team, nor do I support her works. Her use of AI has come to my attention, as well as how late I am to learning about this. I do not support the use of AI when it comes to the arts, and I am not comfortable working with an author who uses AI for their book related art. This information came to light via her Facebook page, a newsletter emailed out in May that I just read in full, as well as further research on Threads. This review was posted in 2024. The review has been requested to be removed from Amazon, and edited with this note on Storygraph as well. My full statement will be accessible on Threads & Instagram later today.*

"Because even if you deny it, I feel you in my soul-I cannot let anything happen to you."

If I were to choose one quote to talk about the relationship between Ceph and Elle in this book, it would be the one above. They are both so curious about each other from the start, even despite Ceph's resistance, but they ultimately try to fight it. They find every reason to think that they can't make this work... but the pull is just too strong.

Elle ends up in danger due to the job she is working, which is why Ceph is guarding her in the first place, but the danger is from a unsuspected source... and Ceph realizes he needs to protect her for more than one reason. She is not a damsel in distress by any means, but she sure is the love of his life. Which is very hard for him to admit, and very hard for her to accept.

Guarded by the Kraken contains:
-second chance romance
-fated mates
-telepathy
-slow burn
-tentacles
-unbreakable bond
-healing together
If these things are up your alley, as well as a hint of science and a good plot, this book is for you. I absolutely loved this book, and I loved Cassie's writing! Ceph and Elle made my heart swell so much.

This book was fantastic! I had been seeing pop-ups for it sporadically on my IG feed as a follower of another author in the series, and it intrigued me enough to pick it up as a standalone in the Monster Security Series as one of my Halloween reads! It did not disappoint! Earlier this year, I had read "Remarkably Bright Creatures," so maybe my love for this book, intrigue into more Octopus stories, or just my increasing appetite for monster smut drove me to it. I loved every second of it. The smut was spicy and interesting enough to want to learn about the logistics of a kraken and a human mate underwater, combined with the fantastical story with a major Sci-Fi twist, I was hooked (pun intended). The author's note at the beginning warns you not to quit on her either; the FMC and MMC get their happily ever after, and whether you read the epilogue or not, it's there and then some! The twist bringing them together was made believable by the brilliant writing of the author. I'm glad I stuck with it. There were parts of the story I cried over, parts I was scared of, and parts where I was heartbroken with the two characters. No real trigger warnings either, which was nice for my normal monster and dark romance books. More tales of surviving grief and overcoming life's challenges on land and sea. All in all, I absolutely will read more in this series and more by this author! I highly recommend it!

Well, that book was a-m-a-z-i-n-g !

Ceph and Elle are both great characters and I loved their depth.

I loved that we have a strong/smart FMC and a MMC that is not scared of that !

Their story is really beautiful and I found it truly great that they had to work through their trauma together and both accepted each other's past.

The book made me laugh, cry, giddy and Oooooh so HOT
(where can one find herself a Ceph ?!)

And these last chapters.... pretty sure my 'breeding hole' was crying of jealousy.

It was a real hit and run for me from Cassie !

**It does have a pregnancy trope at the end (and mentions of the lost of a child) thoughout the book), so if you're not into that, maybe it's not the story for you, BUT I DEFINATELY recommend it for the others !

There are books you read… and then there are books that claim you.
This one didn’t ask permission—it simply reached into my chest and held my heart hostage from the first page to the last. I devoured it in a single day, unable to look away, unable to breathe without needing just one more chapter.

The writing was magnetic, the pacing flawless, and the characters? So achingly real, so beautifully layered, I felt every heartbeat, every ache, every quiet hope. Their pain became mine. Their joy, a kind of salvation.

And the epilogue—God, the epilogue. It didn’t just wrap up the story; it broke me open. I wept. Not just because it was powerful, but because it was perfect. One of the most breathtaking endings I’ve ever read.

If you plan to start this book, cancel your plans. Let it pull you under. Let it consume you. You won’t regret a single second.

I was honestly waiting for the suffering and feels to hit alot harder for the two mains. The warning at the beginning made me think this book was going to WRECK me, but don't let it scare you away.

Definitely an enjoyable read, and while certain moments you may be whipping your head back and forth trying to figure who-is-where, what-is-where, and how-did-we-get-there, it is what I would call a pretty light read.

And I don't say that LIGHTLY. I was scared that the loss of a child was going to ruin this for me (I don't do kids suffering ((F*ck you Steven King))). The loss for both the mains was heavy but also played out mostly as reserves they brought into the relationship without being to heavily brought to life in the moment.

Loved it

I love loved this story. The emotional beginning of both characters' loss broke my heart, but their bonding was the spark of something new. It grew with each touch, each conversation. Air and water coming together, it melted me into a puddle. A kraken and a human. I am so happy i gave this story a chance.

Not my cup of tea

First things first, before I tell you the things I didn't like, I want you all to know that it was a very sweet love story filled with mystery, intrigue, and even some suspense. This couple was adorable and it really focused on them both healing, though she took a lot longer than him to come to terms with their relationship, as most monster human couples typically do. It was even pretty good on the spice (Toy play is always a bonus)... Until it entered darker waters, thankfully not til near the end, but it was still a struggle to get through.

The public nudity I was not a fan of, and even worse, the Kraken have a telepathic internet connection, that allows others to communicate and share their emotions. So, everyone knows when you're doing it, and the characters even get off on "feeling" the others do it, too. 🫣 Pretty deep hippy type stuff. There was also the addition of an octopus peen, which... idk... I had mixed feelings on that one. Even with all that, there was no tentacle play, no DP. No real point in... Being a kraken.

I was also disappointed that we didn't get an introduction on some new smexy aliens. But... What did appear was... So not smexy. At least not via the description.

On another note, I feel like the author made everything as difficult as possible. In "Guarded By The Vodnik" there was a way for humans and water people to be together. Having this Kraken be completely unable to be on land, and no human way possible for her to do anything, I feel like the way they had their HEA just enabled them to have a HEA, but no future Kraken/human couples would be able to be together. I feel like, SPOILER

If she hadn't pretended to be dead and let them study her, they could have figured out how to change other humans so others could be together, like, for instant, his boss and his mer.

Ok, those are my thoughts. If no one else has issues with any of this, more power to you, but I thought people should be aware in case this is also... Not their cup of tea.

This was incredible.

Just wow. Ms. Alexander this book blew my mind. The world building, the characters, the levels of emotion and meaning, and all the chances you took that tested the boundaries of monster romances. Like Alexander’s Guarded by the Nightmare, this book has an emotional depth and sense of wonder that few monstrous romances can match.

Highly recommended.

“Little Pearl” my two favourite words from this book, now Cassie was a new to me author and she blow my mind,

Now Cepharius and Elle they made me fall for them so hard, I had no clue how a human was gonna survive with a Kraken but it blow my mind the way she made it work. Cassie did her research so well and you can see it within her work.

There are Amazing Tropes within this book the mains one are

* Breeding Kink
* Fated Mates
* Tentacles
* Telepathic Minds
* Protective MMC
* Healing
* Bodyguard

The Epilogue at the End was Hotter than Hot words can not describe how Hot it was this is a book you need to read if you like Monster Romance it’s a MUST READ!!!
