Rewind is the fourth book in the Wiltshire based DI Bernadette Nolan series but it can easily be enjoyed as a stand-alone. Joy Kluver has been very clever here because although much of the book takes place in the present day, there are significant scenes set six years previously, which give us a fascinating insight into what shaped Bernie Nolan and why she is so desperately haunted by her past.
Bernie is a superb character who is utterly grounded in reality. She is a dedicated detective, who is popular with her team and resolute in her work. However; she's also a mother to a baby girl, in a loving relationship with Dougie, a fellow officer, and a woman who is deeply traumatised by a horrific ordeal years ago. Having agreed to split parental leave with Dougie, she is returning to work after nine months off, although understandably she has mixed feelings; she is looking forward to seeing her colleagues and has missed adult conversations but she will miss being with Mira all day.
Her first day takes a dramatic turn though, even before she arrives at headquarters when, driving to work, she comes across a road traffic accident. A BMW has crashed into a tree and upon questioning the police officer in attendance, she learns the driver hasn't survived the impact. While surveying the crash site, Bernie spots what may be blood on the boot of the car and shortly afterwards makes a gruesome discovery. The driver isn't the only victim here but while his death may be an accident, the unidentifiable man in the boot has clearly been murdered.
What follows is a complex, difficult investigation with a rising body count. It's a frustrating case, even after two of the dead are identified but the team slowly begins to piece some of the evidence together. The portrayal of the work undertaken by the Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) is excellent; Joy Kluver ensures that although there is a clear chain of command, their efforts are collaborative. Bernie is respected by her team but crucially, the feeling is mutual and even after one officer admits to an oversight, she doesn't bawl him out.
Mistakes and errors of judgement are explored throughout Rewind and as she is forced to confront memories and faces from the past, Bernie's sense of guilt and accompanying terror is almost visceral. Her panic attacks are an empathetic reflection of the mental anguish wrought upon police officers, particularly when they blame themselves for any failings that occurred.
The second part of the book features some chapters set six years ago and so we see a younger, more naïve Bernie, working for the Met and thrust into an operation she wasn't prepared for. It has become painfully evident by this point that the investigation results in tragedy and knowing this lends a terrible sense of foreboding to proceedings. Joy Kluver captures the gritty gang-led violence vividly but danger isn't just found on London's streets and estates.
A court case brings Bernie further turmoil and allows us to witness her courage and resolute desire to achieve justice, in spite of her abject fear. However, other people are equally as determined to stop her. I'm mindful not to give anything away about the multilayered storyline but there are some dramatic, gripping scenes which are also deeply moving.
With believable, nuanced characters complementing the tension and emotion of the compulsive plot throughout, Rewind is a cracking read and one I highly recommend.

It’s been a while since I have stepped into the world of DI Bernadette Noel but I was soon back in the thick of it. Bernie is just back after maternity leave, having to adjust to being a working mother with a demanding career and a team who have got used to a slightly different way of working in her absence. Hoping for an easy start back she finds herself caught up in a murder case on her way into work on her first day. Added to this both Bernie and her partner Dougie have been called as witnesses in a case involving her former colleague which dredges up memories of her first case as a detective and its not a time she really wants to revisit.
The murder case is a bit of a tough one as the body has been left with no distinguishing marks to assist in identification, but it is not long before body parts are found in various locations and it leads them to someone they thought was locked up for other offences, someone who has links to Bernie’s past.
Bernie definitely has a lot on her plate, and she is torn between wanting to be back at work and also be with her daughter and regular hours are not always easy, but thankfully her partner Douggie understands it all to well, but it doesn’t stop the guilty feelings. The case has her frustrated as she can’t work out why the victim was killed in such a brutal way. When the evidence starts to point to a case she had put behind her things start to take a more dangerous turn for her.
I think what I liked most about this book was delving into Bernie’s past and learning more about her early cases. Chosen more for her appearance than her ability she really was thrown in the deep end and as much as she finds herself getting involved in situations that ultimately end badly. It is this case that gives an insight into what drives Bernie now to do whatever it takes to fight for the victim no matter who they are and find out the who and the why of every case.
It was great to see Leigh Roberts back helping the team. She has come on quite a way since we first met her and even DS Kerry Allen, Bernie’s closest friend on the team is starting to warm to her. There is definitely a good working relationship in the team and Bernie is slowly learning to trust their instincts and have a slightly more relaxed approach to managing them, something that does not come easily to her but when she is not 100% sure who she can trust her friends are there to back her.
I really enjoyed this book finishing it in just a day. One thing is certain it will be interesting where DI Noel goes from here.

It is so good to get another book in this series. Bernie is returning to work after the birth of her daughter. It is her first day back and she has not even stepped foot into the office when she comes across a crime scene.

The author didn’t hang about when she decided that Bernie should get back to work, did she? A car crash that has a little more to it than the first officer on the scene had noticed. Bernie spots something out of order and then things really escalate.

Not only has Bernie got to get back into the swing of running an investigation, she also discovers that there is a new boss at the station. Luckily for Bernie, her colleagues are still the same and they all welcome her with open arms. Given that the crash has some additional complications, it is vital to keep things in-house as much as possible. The last thing they want is the press to get wind of what else they found.

This is a case that will take a great many twists and turns. The title of Rewind is so good as it implies going back or returning. This is exactly what the Author has done. Not only is there a connection with the past, the Author also takes us back in time to when Bernie worked undercover.

This is such an amazing book to read, I had not realised just how complex it was until I started to write this review. It never felt confusing while reading, so that goes to show how well this Author can create and weave her story. Having things from the past and keeping them in check so that you don’t give things away is something that she does so well.

This story starts at a good pace and it never drops, juggling motherhood, a case, her past and a court case is just the tip of the iceberg for Bernie. There is so much going on and she is more reliant on her team than ever before. The friendships she has built up with her team come into its own and as much as she doesn’t always want to accept it, she does need the help of everyone this time.

If you are looking for an amazing series then this is one to look at. The characters that the Author has created are great, they are a good mix of good, bad and sly. There is controversy, backstabbing, danger and threats. This latest book gives more details about Bernie and gives an insight into how she really feels about things. Another fabulous book and one I would definitely recommend.

I was thrilled to hear that a new DI Bernie Noel story was being written. So when I got a message from Joy asking if I'd like to be part of the review team, of course I said yes!

And I can tell you now that I'm so glad I did. As Bernie Noel is back with a vengeance! After giving birth to her daughter Mira and having her partner Dougie take over her job at MCIT. It's now time for the pair to swap roles and for Bernie to return to MCIT while Dougie takes over parental duties.

But Bernie's boss has given her strict instructions to leave the station by 6:30 every evening.

However, that doesn't quite go according to plan.

As on her first day back, Bernie stumbles across a crashed car. That not only has a dead body in the driver's seat but also a dismembered body in the boot.

Which leads her and her team on the hunt for a killer. That has significant implications for Bernie. And as the case heats up and more bodies are discovered, Bernie is forced to revisit her past, specifically the case that left her physically scarred and transferred to Wiltshire Police.

Yet, Bernie soon realizes that the past may be the key to solving her current case, and that, unfortunately, police corruption may not be restricted to the Met.

And with a brilliantly paced storyline that had the perfect balance between the past and the present. Not to mention a captivating mystery. This was a crime that I had no chance of solving, and it was a great way to announce DI Bernie Noel's return! And I genuinely hope there is more to come, but if not, it was a cracking way to end things.

I would happily recommend Rewind and the DI Bernie Noel series to all. 😊

My thanks to Joy Kluver for the opportunity to read an early copy of Rewind. 😊

Really enjoyed this. Loved hearing DI Noel’s story and redemption. Joy is clever in making a complicated storyline very understandable. Much warmer than many detective novels I’ve read before.
