Get ready to laugh out loud in the office from New York Times bestselling author Melanie Moreland - My new boss—Alexander Bane Aptly named since he’s the bane of my existence. Please isn’t in his vocabulary. He grunts, growls, and demands. If only he didn’t look so sexy when doing so. If only his mouth weren’t so addictive when kissing mine. He’s quickly becoming my favorite boss. Which is wrong. My new assistant is an unwelcomed distraction. Snarky, witty, always smiling. Constantly putting me in my place. Making me second-guess my decisions. I dislike it. Intensely. Unless I’m kissing her. Then Magnolia Myers becomes my favorite person. Which I hate. Two people working together, disliking each other. Until they don’t. Then the fun begins. HR has never been so entertained.
Author's For those on the lookout for a hero who's so charming when he's bossy that it makes you want to follow his orders just to keep him talking.
A bit about me: NYT/WSJ/USAT International bestselling author Melanie Moreland, lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of lots of lovely years and their rescue cat, Amber. Nothing means more to her than her friends and family, and she cherishes every moment spent with them. While seriously addicted to coffee, and highly challenged with all things computer-related and technical, she relishes baking, cooking, and trying new recipes for people to sample. She loves to throw dinner parties, and also enjoys travelling, but finds coming home is always the best part of any trip. Melanie loves stories, especially paired with a good wine, and enjoys skydiving (free falling over a fleck of dust) extreme snowboarding (falling down stairs) and piloting her own helicopter (tripping over her own feet.) She's learned happily ever-afters, even bumpy ones, are all in how you tell the story.

If The Contract and a romcom had a baby, My Favorite Boss would be the result. Think all the grumbling and growling of Richard Van Ryan with a host of hilarious antics that will have you laughing until you cry. Seriously, this one needs to come with a hazard warning not to eat or drink while reading it in order to avoid mishaps.
Poor Alex Bane can’t keep an executive assistant to save his life. Then Magnolia Myers comes literally crashing into his life, and life as Bane knows it will never be the same. I thought Katy Van Ryan was the end all be all, but Myers, as Bane calls her, is Katy squared.
It's impossible not to be just as intrigued and fascinated with Magnolia as Bane is. She’s not afraid of his bluster, anticipates his every need, and somehow manages to make him smile, and dare I say, laugh against his will. She's compassionate and kind with a quiet strength that makes mean girls fume and everyone else adore her.
And Bane, bless his heart, the poor guy has some horrible, negative programming, and his Maggie darling somehow rewrites his coding before he even knows what hit him. He's all generous, protective heart wrapped in an abrasive, demanding outer layer.
This gifted storyteller could do a master class on writing the perfect romcom. The humor, the heat, the abundance of heart, all beautifully balanced for the optimal emotional impact. I couldn’t get enough and wish I could read this again for the first time. Get rid of distractions and settle in. Your romantic heart is in for the most exhilarating, satisfying ride of its life!
My Favorite Boss is a stand alone workplace romance by Melanie Moreland. This is a super cute, grumpy/sunshine, boss/employee romance that made me smile.
Alexander Bane is thirty four years old and is the majority owner of a very successful landscape design business, Balanced Designs. Bane is a very demanding, grumpy boss. Ever since his long time assistant left, he’s been through several, none of which last more than a week or so. Then Magnolia blew into the office and bowled him over, literally!
“You’ve been waiting for me.”
Magnolia “Maggie” Myers is twenty six years old. She needs this job and knows she’d be perfect for it. Now all she has to do is convince the grumpy boss to hire her. Maggie is all sweetness and light. She is also very determined and very good at her job. Not only is she efficient, she is caring. She soon makes Bane wonder what he ever did without her.
Maggie in all her buttoned up, lacy skirts and tops were driving Bane crazy. Every inch of her could be covered and it would drive him crazy. She was a wonderful assistant so he needed to keep his hands off her, including his lips. Too bad he didn’t seem to be able to follow his own advice!
“He kissed me like I was his oxygen and he needed me to breathe.”
Bane was raised by a mother that never showed love and he thought himself unable to love as a result. Maggie is overflowing with love and kindness. You would thing these two wouldn’t work but they do. Maggie brings a light to Bane’s life. She makes him smile, laugh, and brings out a protective side of himself he’s never experienced.
I smiled so much while reading this. Bane was hilarious and Maggie handled him so easily. She truly was the one with all the power but her power was in her kindness. And I loved the impact it had on Bane. This was a sweet, sexy, fun story that I truly enjoyed. And, as always, the epilogues were wonderful.
3.5 ⭐ (Loooong review, although it's nothing new 😂)
Magnolia/Maggie (26) hasn't had much luck when it comes to job applications, but she landed an interview with Alex/Bane (34). She's not his first choice, not even second; as a matter of fact, she's on the bottom list, but all the other applicants Bane interviewed didn't pass, and he always finds something annoying about them. 🙃
Anyway, Maggie got late with her interview because of the traffick, but she pleaded with him to give her a chance. Which, for some miracle, Bane did, and she eventually got the job. 😉
There was instant attraction on Bane's side, and he finds it annoying that he's even attracted to his new assistant. She's so far and different from the socialites in his circle, and although it wasn't directly said, I think she's the opposite of the women he would normally go for. 🤷♀️
As for Maggie, she felt the same attraction, but since he's her boss and grumpy one at best, she decided to ignore her thoughts.
There's a lot of witty banter between them, and I enjoyed how Maggie's sunny personality slowly dismantles Bane's walls. 🤭
For the first 35%-ish, it was solely focused on their professional relationship and how they work so well. This also shows the hot and cold behavior of Bane; like I said, he's trying so hard to fight his attraction. 🤭
He wasn't a grade-A jerk towards Maggie, but when he's having his emotions out of sorts, he would become snippy and short with her. Barking orders here and there. But Maggie's not affected by his moodiness; she didn't let it affect her at all and still did her job to the best she could. 😅
There are time jumps during this part too; sometimes days or weeks will pass, tbh, idk how long she's been working for him when then finally gave in to the mutual attraction. 🤔
But when they finally decided to act on it, I'm just glad that there's no typical reaction of regretting it or pulling away from each other. They both admitted they liked each other and wanted to see where this interest would lead. They had to hide it though because they work together. Not that there's any rules against fraternization, but Maggie wanted to separate their personal and professional relationships. Bane agreed to it, but his compliance didn't last long. 😂 He became sneaky when it came to touching her; he always wanted her close and couldn't keep his hands off of her, and before they knew it, they'd been caught on multiple occasions in comprising positions. 🤣 But since he's the boss and they're not really doing anything nasty, they were able to get away from it all the time. 😂
For the majority of the book, it was adorable, and I love seeing them together. But then the problem came thanks to Bane's mommy issues. 🤧
See, his mom didn't particularly care for him when his father died; her priorities were all about the status, wealth, and name. So growing up, Bane didn't have the best model when it comes to healthy relationships. And now that he's a grown man, he believes himself to be someone not capable of love. 🙃
Sure, he could care for, provide for, and protect Maggie, but he can never love her (or so he says). Which is the one thing that she ever wanted from her future husband. I mean, she saw (or heard???) how her parents deeply loved one another (based on her father's story??? her mom died when she was young, so...), and it's understandable how she would want the same thing for her. 🥺
But Bane was hellbent on marrying her without loving her. He said they could make it work because they were so good together. Then there's the having children aspect too; he didn't want to have kids because of his upbringing. He said he would never be a good father; that's why having kids isn't on his cards.
But Maggie was open to the idea of children—maybe not now but in the future. And Bane agreed just to placate her and said that they're going to talk about it in the future if he ever changed his mind. But he said in his inner monologue that it's not going to happen. 🤧
So I don't understand why she agreed to marry him despite knowing upfront that he would never love her and that he's against having children. It pissed me that she's willing to settle for something like this when she knows what she really wants and deserves so much more. 🤦♀️😮💨
Then her father passed away, and she found out that she's pregnant. Knowing Bane's stance on kids, she slowly pulled away from him, thinking that he wouldn't want anything to do with her once he found out about the pregnancy. She had it in her mind that she would be a single mom, and truthfully, I really can't blame her. 🤷♀️
But I'm not okay with her hiding her pregnancy; maybe she needed time or idk, but I got the impression if she had her way, she would hide it for as long as she could. And while Bane was annoying me at this point, he still deserves to know that info. If he didn't take a picture of her list of medicines and accidentally show it to his doctor friend, he wouldn't find out about it at all. 🥲
Anyway, on the last chapter, that's when Bane had an epiphany that he's been in love with her all along. He chastises himself for being dumb and for not realizing it sooner. But idk, I can't, for the life of me, buy this sudden realization. 🫣
Had he not found out about the pregnancy, he wouldn't have this 180 about love and children. Like I said, he's against these things, so the 100% acceptance caught me off guard. But idk, maybe he really felt this all along but was too blind to recognize it for what it was. I guess this will depend on the readers and how they're going to appreciate Bane's sudden change of heart.
Overall, I had a good time for the 90% part of this book. The last two chapters took away some of my enjoyment, but the epilogue made up for it. 💖 It was nice to see them as a family, and it made me believe that Bane really wanted this family and love for him. 🥹

I LOVED this workplace romance so much! The story was just so fun and sweet, following a grumpy boss, Bane, and his new assistant, Magnolia. Bane is a complete workaholic and expects the most from his employees. When he takes a chance on Magnolia, he is shocked to find she is more than competent and willing to meet his demands. As the two find their footing and rapport, Magnolia and Bane find it harder and harder to keep their feelings at bay and not cross the line from boss and assistant to lovers.
Ugh, I just absolutely loved this romance! I swear Bane and Magnolia were so freaking fun and well-suited to one another. The grumpy x sunshine worked perfectly with their banter and the crazy situations they got themselves in. Their relationship was absolutely full of heart and tender care for each other. I loved that Magnolia and Bane had history and worked through their hardships together, it was so cute that they both so desperately wanted to fall in love. If you are a fan of sweet and charming romances, this romcom with the perfect balance of humor, steam, emotion, and growth, is for you! I cannot wait for the next book from Melanie Moreland, she is easily becoming one of my favorite authors.
~Many thanks to The Author Agency and Melanie Moreland for an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
I feel bad but.. Sorry but I just couldn't keep up.. The cover ? Horrible . The design ? Even worse .. The writing ? No comments .
Like the MMC wasn't even a grumpy boss , the FMC was messy asf , any banter ? NONE. Tension ? ZERO . So what is left ? No nuance no chemistry no tension, nada , it was even cringe at some chapters, I don't even want t think how it would be if they EVER kissed ..
No one puts a smile on my face quite like a book from Melanie Moreland. Her alpha heroes are absolute cinnamon rolls and I just want to eat them all up.
Even when writing an Office Romance with a boss and a secretary, which can be a tough power imbalance to manage. This was sweet, funny, sexy, and just a delight.
I loved Maggie and Alex together. She was charming right from the start. He was so grumpy but with a heart of gold. She wins him over with her competence and great cooking skills. He sweeps her off her feet with praise and treats her like a princess. And he adopts a cute kitten with her. Yes, that's a big help.
If you are looking for low angst, great steam, with a dash of hidden relationship, this is the perfect recipe for you.
This book also has: Opposites attract grumpy sunshine oopsie baby latex allergy frenemies to lovers
This was a little too low angst for me and I did get a little bit draggy with it near the end. And the hero doesn't believe he can love but wants to marry her ASAP?
But I think many will love it despite my small hang ups. I hope the author gives us more books in the "Favorite" series very soon.
4 stars 3 on the spice scale
CW: toxic parent, parent with dementia, death of a parent, surprise pregnancy
*Thank you to Melanie Moreland and Waterhouse Press for the gifted book.*
Bane is a hard ass who wants everything perfect for work. He had fired so many Assistants, but he met his match in Magnolia she is everything he doesn't want Happy Sunshine all the works but she proves herself to be the best and shows lol The banter between the 2 was funny. The HR problems when they are in positions are funny. He let's his guard down around her.
She's perfect he does try to fight the attraction, and Magnolia has her own problems dealing with workers who are catty and her father who has good days and bad. But they go together really well.
My favorite part has to be when they find lil kitten Hedgy. My heart melted, and I cried how they were with him. Plus, the cute artwork that the author shows is CUTEEE. Don't worry, Bane does mess up a few times, and we deal with family problems.

My Favorite Boss is OK. There are some funny banter, cute moments but there are boring plot. The plot is dragging. I wish Miss Moreland can add more drama into it.
I love a well-written romcom. Those who chat me up when I am reading books KNOW I am particular about my romcoms. Timing is everything. Not exhausting a joke is critical. Balancing humor, warmth, heart and swoons is of the utmost importance. Melanie Moreland delivers on such a perfectly high status bar in which romcoms are held. The perfect balance of storytelling with each scene having meaning to bask in is everything to me as a reader.
First, I am all for the alphahole boss trope. Give me a grumpy, overachieving, perfectionist and knock him on his head over heels in love ass - I am there for it. And Alexander Bane fits the brief. He is the perfect crusty hard cinnamon roll and ONLY for her. He doesn't get soft for anyone else (except begrudgingly Hedgy).
Next, give me a hyper competent, not backing down but wears her heart on her sleeve heroine - and I am there for it. Magnolia Myers was the relatable heroine that everyone can see a piece of yourself in. She wants to do a good job - no a great job. She wants to be her own person - seen in her wardrobe that is where her heart also shines brightly. She loves deeply, and genuinely cares about those inher charge - including her grumpy boss.
The banter is hilarious. There were times I hyperventilated. They fight the chemistry but when they give in, WOO BOY.
I've read the ebook, read the paperback I've just finished the audiobook. While I know some will eyeroll, I won't re-read every version because it's my job - but because this was the escape to watching love bloom and a happily ever after I want delivered in my romance books.
Once again, Melanie Moreland has blown me away with her storytelling. Leaving a place for real heart and emotion that doesn't get lost in the laughter. If I could give this story 10 stars I would.
FTC rules require I disclose that I am contractor for Moreland Books Inc. I am her cover designer and this aint AI art -but beautifully hand drawn art from a talented illustrator. I am her PA and gal Friday. I am her friend. But my biggest role is I am a genuine fan - and those who know me best know I wouldn't be the other if I didn't really love her storytelling.
I think it's time to throw in the towel and finally admit to myself that I'm too grumpy for romcoms, out of the whole book there was only a couple of situations that I found funny, throughout most of the book i just found myself wanting them to have a serious conversation.
I liked Mangolia, she was all sunshine. I liked when Bane showed how much he wanted to care care of Mangolia.
There were a lot of sweet moments that I felt were overshadowed by lust when it turned into sex. Conversations about marriage and Mangolia wanting to be loved were quickly moved out of focus because Bane would start sexing her up.
And then we get to the most ridiculous thing of all, Bane is obsessed with thoughts of wanting Mangolia in his life and in his bed every night, wanting to wake up to her. Caring deeply for her. But yet refuses the fact that he loves her, tells her he can't give her love, can't give her his heart because the way his mother has always treated him has ruined him emotionally and he believes he's uncapable. So when talking about marriage all he's offering is protection, care, attraction, companionship, affection but not love. And he claims he dosent want children because he can't love them either.
So of course, OF COURSE Mangolia ends up pregnant and her father passes away. So she's grieving her father while hiding the pregnancy from Bane and has a little episode where she wants to be alone and goes to her own apartment instead of Bane's place.
Bane is confused and wants to know what's wrong, about to head out to find out but runs into his friend that tells him he's worried about how Mangolia is feeling because he loves her and apparently at 92% he has the realization that everything he's been feeling for her is because he loves her *facepalm* and that same friend points out the vitamins mangolia is taking are for her pregnancy..and Bane, previously saying he didn't want kids? Is all but bursting with happiness. Which fair, if you find out the love of your life is pregnant and the only reason you thought you didn't want kids is because you thought you were incapable of love but really? Leaving the epiphany to happen because of the friend pointing it out ? At 92%?!?!? Ugh.
So he runs off to Mangolia to tell her he loves her and we get her POV that showed a conversation with a doctor about her pregnancy where she mentions Bane doesn't want kids and the doctor says "“Well, then you’ll have to change his mind. Love has a way of doing that.” uhhhhhh, I don't think that's how things work. 😒 {"I didn’t know how to tell her he didn’t love me. He cared. Even adored. But not loved."}
{He smiled. “I’m an idiot, as Sam pointed out. I was so certain I couldn’t love, I refused to admit what was right in front of my face. You. I love you so much, Maggie darling. I have from the moment you bowled me over and made me laugh. I felt as if I began to live once you were around. You bring everything bright and good into my life.” He laid his hand on my stomach. “Including this little surprise.”} @94%
And that's where I stopped reading.
Very cute moments throughout and likeable characters but it very firmly put me in my place to avoid romcoms for the rest of my reading journey.

This book was such a freaking treat! I seriously can’t tell you how many times this book had me laughing out loud. The push and pull relationship and banter between Bane & Magnolia was so well done!
The star of this whole book was hands down Hedgy! 🤣🫶🏼 Bane made for one hell of a cat daddy! 🐈
As a workplace romance this book really delivered on spicy office scenes. Seriously, the heat was off the charts.
"𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴," 𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥. "𝘛𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵."
Beneath the comedy and spice we have Bane who doesn’t think he’s capable of love because of his awful mother, and Magnolia who is just trying to stay positive as she faces her father’s Alzheimer’s. I loved that even with the humor, Magnolia and Bane helped heal each other’s hearts.
I damn near fell out of my chair from laughing so hard reading this book. This is a golden romcom!
Work office romance Boss vs assistant Billionaire grumpy Sassy heroine Full of laugh out loud moments He’s uptown/she’s downtown A rescued cat He’s 34/She’s 26
Magnolia needs a new job and literally runs into her new boss knocking them both over to the ground. Sparks instantly fly until Mr. Bane opens his mouth and he’s an absolute grump. He cannot be distracted by this firecracker with silky skin and they do everything they can to keep it professional. HR has a field day with these two. There are so many hilarious laugh out loud moments. I had tears coming out of my face because I was laughing so hard. Explosive diarrhea story. Getting peed on by a cat in a backpack. Getting stuck in a tree.
Magnolia Myers feels like a fish out of water at this company with some grown women who try to be bullies and it’s Alexander Bane who shut that down quick and the romance blossoms.
Such a cute story with low drama. No cheating. Adorable HEA. I freaking love this book!
This was such a fun office rom com! I enjoyed everything from Bane being obsessed with Maggie, to their cat Hedgy, the number of times they got caught together, and everything in between. I loved the banter and their relationship growth. I loved her relationship with her dad and the flowers!! And the spice🔥🔥🔥
My only comment is I wish it was slightly more unhinged. I loved how unhinged the MMC was in My Favorite Kidnapper, and I just wish Bane was a little more unhinged.
Thank you for the arc! Can’t wait for the next book.
This book wasn’t bad or anything it’s just not what I’m in the mood for , the H wasn’t grumpy honestly, and I even think he was kinda nice🫣. The other thing is I felt no tension and chemistry between them , I was actually confused when they kissed😭 there wasn’t enough build up for me🤷🏽♀️
“One moment, I’m laughing out loud; the next, I have a tear rolling down my face. Then, I’m fanning myself! How Melanie Moreland managed to weave so many genres into “My Favourite Boss” with expert precision is beyond me. Yet again, she proves why she’s an author we can rely on for must-read stories every single time.”
I eagerly awaited this release, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! This rom-com has everything I hoped for: the classic grumpy/sunshine trope, emotional depth, and a hearty dose of humor. Bane, our grumpy boss with a complex past, is so multi-layered it’s a joy to watch each of those layers peel away. And Magnolia—oh, how she stole my heart! Her sass and sweetness make her the perfect match for Bane's brooding nature.
The party favor bag scene was comedy gold, and the series of compromising situations had me in stitches. Yet, amidst all the fun, Moreland seamlessly guides us into more serious emotional territory, handling it with her signature flair. Magnolia is undoubtedly the yin to Bane’s yang, but the real question is: will Bane, after a lifetime of emotional restraint and family struggles, ever find the courage to say those three little words? This story kept me on edge, laughing, crying, and rooting for them all the way. An absolute must-read!
This romcom was exactly what I needed. It was cute and fun and bonus: it has an adorable kitten.
The banter in this story was top notch and made my office romance-lovin’ heart happy.
Grumpy Alex and sassy Magnolia were the perfect pair. From their first run-in (literally), to the very last word, I couldn’t get enough of these two.
I love when a grumpy butt mmc is a big softie when it comes to the fmc. The way Alex cares for Magnolia, and makes sure she has everything she needs is the sweetest. From her unique wardrobe to her sandwich making skills to her sassy mouth, it was highly entertaining to see Alex Bane fall harder each day for his Magnolia.
The situations they found themselves in while at the office, in compromising positions, then to have HR walk in on them, was hilarious.
An adorable cat thrown in the mix was a great touch. It showed Alex really did have a soft, squishy heart in there somewhere.
If you love a good office romance, boss/employee, grumpy/sassy story, I’m pretty sure you’d love this one.
Wow! I absolutely loved this book. Amazing characters and wonderful plot. Very beautifully written and easy to read.
Hedgy is the star and the real main character of this book. Alexander Bane is your typical grumpy boss that scares off employees pretty fast. Then Magnolia Myers became his assistant and his world got thrown upside down.
She’s sassy and fiery, gives him a run for his money and doesn’t take c**p from him. Oh, and she has Hedgy, an orange fluff of grumpiness and happiness.
Alex and Maggie had an instant chemistry. The banter between them was hilarious and simply delicious. The situations they always seem to find themselves was so funny. Especially Alex’ allergy scene (you’ll need to read to find out about that).
Overall I loved this book very much. If you’re looking for a boss/employee, accidental pregnancy, billionaire, romantic comedy then you’re going to love it.
Move over Dante!! There's a new Boss in town!! This book still has me giggling. I didn't think it could get any better than My Favorite Kidnapper. I was wrong! My favorite Boss is swoony, sweet and utterly hilarious!! Magnolia Myers is the sunshine to Alexander Bane's grump. These two have the best chemistry but oftentimes the worst luck, especially when HR is around. Melanie has outdone herself with this one! Equal parts heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny. And let's not forget Hedgy! You're going to love him!
There is nothing better than when a grumpy, growly Melanie Moreland hero learns to love. Thanks to a sassy heroine and adorable cat, Alexander Bane found out that not only does he have a huge heart but that he was a secret mush and I loved every part of his journey.
Magnolia may be my favorite Moreland heroine. She was confident yet vulnerable, clumsy yet super competent at everything she did. She’s someone you both admire and empathize with.
I both teared up and laughed out loud and once again Melanie proves why she’s one of my favorite authors.
I loved every moment of this wonderful romcom from the fabulously talented Melanie Moreland. It is everything I've come to expect in one of her books and yet also so much more. Grumpy boss? LOVE. And Bane is delicious, of course. Watching his journey from icy a-hole boss to orange cat dad who falls hard for his woman = perfection. But I also loved his Magnolia, who was hard working, caring, compassionate, hilarious, and brought out the tender side of Bane he didn't know he had. Plus Magnolia and her father--that moved me to tears. This book was everything a romance novel should be--swoon, spice, tears, laughter, and love, and it spoiled me for future books...until the next Melanie Moreland arrives, of course.
Magnolia and Bane's story is a worthy sequel in the universe of "My favorite kidnapper". The book was so addictive and delightful to read, and I just loved it.
Magnolia becomes the new assistant of Alexander Bane. She is literally the perfect assistant, but Alex doesn't make her life easier, because he is difficult to work with, and he also feels this insane attraction to her. An attraction that grows bigger every day, until the moment he breaks and acts on it. The best part...she feels the same, but didn't want to do anything because she could jeopardize her position. But he is so irresistible. And, of course, he was the one to take the first step. From then on, we see their love story.
To me, Alex and Magnolia were the perfect couple. I loved how he treated her - with attention, care and love. Even though he never had a proper relationship and everything was new to him, he did wonderfully. He paid attention to the tiniest detail regarding her and always looked after her. She accepted the relationship more easily, but she still had her doubts. But even with them, she couldn't stop herself from falling in love.
I had so much fun with their "misunderstood accidents" at work 🤣. Every single time something like that happened, Jessica from HR was walking in to them at the wrong time. But I loved this all together.
Of course, I have to mention the Cat. It was so lovely reading about Alex adopting it, making a connection with him and starting to love him 🥲.
The chemistry between those two was insane. This is why the spice in this book was so, so good. I loved it so freaking much. When these two are together, nothing else matters. My heart loves reading smut scenes and there were plenty of them in this story 🥵. But I don't expect anything different from Melanie Moreland. This woman writing spicy scenes is off the charts 🌶️.
At some point, their story was developing fast, but I actually didn't mind that.
To me, this story was about finding your person when you least expect it and loving the person with everything you have.
Overall, I am literally in love with Alex and Magnolia's love story.
***I received advanced reader copy of this book and my review is given voluntarily.***
Hilarious, adorable and deliciously spicy! Loved this book hard!
"I had never felt so alive. She was the woman I thought of constantly. I was becoming obsessed with her. I couldn't deny it. I wanted her."
Magnolia Myers was a positive ray of sunshine in Alexander Bane's barren life. From the moment they meet, she makes an impression on him. She's absolutely adorable and sassy. I loved their exchanges - they really cracked me up! Bane fought hard to keep his grumpiness and professionalism around her, and I loved the fact that she absolutely tickled him. Whatever he threw at her, she picked up and ran with it. She was indomitable! Once she started to really matter to him, I was thrilled at the way he looked out for her, protected her, and desired her. These two were fire!! She taught him how to laugh, how to live, and how to love. This was such a fabulous, addictive, funny read. Absolutely loved it!
It was okay. Most of the gripes I had are subjective. I kind of hate “darling” as a term of endearment unless you’re ancient (like Rhysand), or it’s set during the late 19th to mid 20th century and there’s a trans Atlantic accent involved. Again, subjective.
The end kinda bothered me, not a fan of that trope in the context it was given in. Felt kinda gross. Can’t elaborate without spoiling so I’ll leave it at that.
Not huge on the MMC, the FMC was cute but a bit of a wet noodle. I didn’t not like it though, it was entertaining for the most part.
Anytime that this author announces a new book I always look so forward to it! It became an anticipated read of mine ever since and I've been so excited for it. With every teaser and post for this one, I couldn't wait to pick it up! I got into this story immediately and didn't want to put it down. I devoured it in one sitting! I really loved and enjoyed this story so very much!
Alexander Bane and Magnolia Myers's journey pulled me in and didn't let go! Alexander is a partner at Balanced Designs and is a landscape architect. Magnolia is in search of a job and gets an interview at Balanced Designs. Alexander is grumpy and Magnolia is all sunshine. He needs a new assistant and she needs this job. They collide together in memorable fashion. As Alexander hires Magnolia, can this boss and assistant work together? and could more bloom between them?
From the moment that Magnolia and Alexander first meet I was absolutely glued to their story! I really enjoyed the way these two were brought into each other's lives and that they were assistant and boss. Both of them were hard workers. I really liked that we got to see them at Balanced Designs together. I couldn't wait to see how things would play out for them at the office, things they were dealing with in their lives, and of course, their feelings for one another.
Magnolia was so caring and relatable to me. I adored her so much! Alexander was more than meets the eye and had his walls up. I fell for him! They both showed such realness throughout and their connection was beautiful. The back and forth between these two had me cracking up! There were so many priceless moments between them. Alexander and Magnolia got each other in ways no one else could. The chemistry between these two was wonderful, blushworthy, and undeniable! I went through all kinds of emotions with them from beginning to end!
Opening your heart to someone isn't easy, but most definitely worth it which Magnolia and Alexander's journey sure showed. I swear Alexander and Magnolia had me craving sandwiches, coffee, and muffins so much throughout! The bond that Magnolia shared with her dad got me right in the heart. Also, I adored Hedgy!
With My Favorite Boss, Melanie Moreland has created an entertaining day maker of a read that kept me grinning, blushing, and feeling all kinds of feels! I'm still thinking about it and how happy it continues to make this soul of mine. It's another favorite of mine from this author! This book brings a whole new meaning to Bane of my existence. 😏 If you haven't read this author's work yet, you so need to. I can't wait to read what she brings our way next! 💙🥪☕
*I volunteered to read and review a copy of this book from the author*
It’s a classic grumpy/sunshine and boss/assistant, but sometimes a classic trope hits the spot.
Bane is grumpy for a bit but him and Magnolia actually get together fairly early on and then he’s mostly super into her.
I sort of liked Magnolia’s character. I didn’t always find her as funny as Bane seemed to behind closed doors, and the clumsy thing was a bit overdone, but I think they complemented each other well.
Even though Bane/Alex says many times he has problems with emotions, his actions don’t usually show it. He immediately assures Magnolia it’s not just a fling, he’s the one who wants to meet her dad, he wants her to move in, etc. so it was sort of a surprise to me when at 80% he says he can never love her.
I just felt like he was so attentive and infatuated it would’ve occurred to him by then that obviously he was capable of emotions?
But I did like how there was never an unnecessary break up and he came to the conclusion on his own. Kudos to his friend for making him see reason!
This book had some heavy topics as well, including dementia and grief. I appreciated how they were addressed but it was also a romance book, so it was obviously sad but never too bad I had to take a break reading.
Overall, I liked this one! I’ve got my eyes open for Rylee and Sam’s book!

💭This is easily one of my all-time favorite books from Melanie! It had me laughing out loud, and crying like a baby at the end 😭. Honestly, I loved every single moment of this book! And what’s Melanie’s book without the best epilogue? I cannot wait to revisit this story via Audio!!!
🕺𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗲, 𝟯𝟰𝘆𝗼. Bane is officially my "Favorite Boss". Sure, he might come off a little grumpy, but deep down, he's just a total softie. That moment when he decided to keep Hedgy? Ugh, my heart melted! P.S. I knew right away who is TY, haha😉
💃🏻𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗠𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝟮𝟲𝘆𝗼. I absolutely adore Maggie! She's been through so much but still manages to stay kind and tough. Her snarky comebacks to Bane were definitely the best part of the book, her sassiness had me cracking up, just like she made Bane laugh. I was heartbroken seeing her deal with her dad’s condition. Maggie’s always been the one taking care of others, so it’s great to see Bane finally getting a chance to spoil her. She totally deserves it!
🄼🅈 🄵🄰🅅🄾🅁🄸🅃🄴 🄻🄾🄻 🄼🄾🄼🄴🄽🅃🅂 🤣The condom allergy scene 🤣Maggie’s poem to apologize for said accident 🤣The Cat backpack, STOP it, so freakin’ cute 🤣Every time Jessica from HR caught them doing “inappropriate” things
🎧𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄🎧 Oh, how I miss John and Maxine! I'm always looking forward to Melanie's next release just to hear my favorite duo in action again. John was absolutely perfect as Bane, capturing his grumpiness spot-on. Maxine was a total delight as Maggie, bringing so much warmth and charm to the character. Their chemistry is off the charts, and they make the story come alive. If you love great narration and heartfelt romance, this audiobook is a must-listen!

Until now, I haven’t had the pleasure to read Melanie’s work (because I am clearly a very large idiot). I applied and was approved for this arc — which I’m so grateful for because this is seriously one of my favorite books I’ve read all year.
Why you’ll love it…
😻Boss/employee 😻Frenemies to lovers 😻Opposites attract 😻Reluctant hero/sassy heroine 😻Secret romance + Cinderella story 😻Grumpy/sunshine 😻Oops, pregnant!
Why I loved it (5⭐️)… Literally from the first chapter, this book grabbed my heart and wouldn’t let go. I love a good romcom, and this story is so grounded in hilarious banter, physical comedy, and just perfect comedic timing, there was no way I wouldn’t love it.
But beyond the comedic aspects of the story, which I clearly loved, was the emotion that this elicited in me. From joy, excitement and lustiness (is that a word?) to, quite honestly, a bit of sorrow and heartbreak, Bane and Magnolia’s story was just really beautiful. I don’t even know how to put it better than that. Truly beautiful. I don’t know if that is what I’m supposed to be feeling, but that’s the way this bok feels to me, without a doubt.
Magnolia is quirky and sweet and funny and all the things. She is a perfect counterbalance to Alex’s serious, grumpy, buttoned-up demeanor. She breaks through his walls and in-turn, he lets her in. He’s vulnerable for the first time maybe ever. Together, they are the epitome of ying and yang. Add in a spectacularly imperfect kitten named Hedgehog and well, I’m fully sold. The final chapters and epilogue had my heart soaring. It couldn’t have ended better.
I could go on babbling in this review probably all day, but I will just say that if you don’t add this to your immediate reading list, you are doing yourself a disservice. This book will bring you laughter and joy, not to mention warm your heart and brighten your day.
Endless thanks for Melanie and team for this arc, amazing PR package and this story. We are all better for it. 🩵🩵🩵
When it come to office romances i am game. I just needed more. Drama action anything
It was an easy read and it’s a blessing and a problem
Bane was a man child with mammy issues I lived him but he was so impulsive Demanding everything. And seriously you wanted for you friend to tell you that you must love your girl
As for the flower thing totally wanted it to be a different story
