Toen ik dit boek een half jaar geleden aangekondigd zag worden in de Facebookgroep ‘Collecting RUGBY Books’, een aanrader voor rugbyboekengekken als ik, platste ik meteen een voorbestelling. Niet zozeer vanwege het onderwerp, ik besprak in februari al het boek Blood & Thunder over rugby in Ierland, maar meer waarop Peter Bills schrijft. Zijn vorige boek, Le Coq’, was een aaneenschakeling van heerlijke verhalen over de religie die rugby in (zuidwest) Frankrijk is. Dankzij Bills’ boek bezocht ik tijdens het WK van 2023 een aantal plekken waar ik anders nooit over gedacht zou hebben.
Ik had mijn verwachtingen misschien wat moeten bijstellen, bedenkende dat rugby in Ierland een bescheiden vierde plaats inneemt na Gaelic Football, Hurling en voetjebal. Maar gelukkig is de invalshoek van Bills anders. Vooral in het begin van het boek gaat het veel over hoe rugby een door religieuze geschillen verscheurd land probeerde te verenigen. Dat deed Liam o’Callaghan in ‘Blood & Thunder’ ook al, maar Bills ging echt op zoek en in gesprek met de spelers bij de clubs. Hij bezocht uithoeken van de ‘Emerald Island’ waar tot een paar jaar geleden GAA-spelers werden verbannen bij hun club als ze ook rugby speelden. Hij sprak met de vrijwilligers die kleine clubs draaiende houden of juist oprichtten. Allen vertellen eigenlijk hetzelfde verhaal, aan de ene kant is het Ierse nationale team met hun successen verantwoordelijk voor meer belangstelling in de sport. Aan de andere kant heeft de sport te leiden onder de professionalisering. Sinds de vier provincies Leinster, Munster, Ulster en Connagh betaald gingen spelen, iets waar de IRFU zich met hand en tand tegen verzette, ging het bij fameuze clubs als Garyowen, Lansdowne en Cork Constitution achteruit. Dat zien we natuurlijk overal, met Wales als desastreus voorbeeld.
Veel van de verhalen zijn complementair alhoewel elke club natuurlijk zijn uitdagingen heeft maarde rode draad is toch teruglopende seniorenaantallen en meisjesrugby dat voor een lichtpuntje zorgt. Wat voor mij het boek toch erg prettig maakte waren de verhalen over en met legendes als Moss Keane, JPR Williams, Rory Best enz. Dat blijven toch de mooiste verhalen alhoewel iedereen die het Ierse rugby een warm hart toedraagt natuurlijk ‘Triumphs, Trophies and Troubles’ moet lezen.
Dit boek koop of bestel je natuurlijk bij de plaatselijke boekhandel. Zo steunen we de middenstand en elkaar.

Excellent read. Great perspective on the challenges facing the club game and good summary of the impact rugby has had on bringing people in Ireland together. ❤️
