Dr. Karen Bridbord, in her important new book, The Relationship Driven Leader, comprehensively addresses one of the most impactful and often underplayed workplace challenges, our interpersonal relationships. In the introduction to the book, Dr Bridbord, a workplace psychologist, adroitly notes people often spend more time outside of work thinking about interaction dynamics with their colleagues than actual business challenges. This book lays out her theoretical model and systematic practical guide to helping leaders at any level address our people problems by defining the key factors that shape “the intentionally healthy relationship.” She take us one step further by showing us step by step, how to move from insight to action, and effect lasting behavioral change that can significantly strengthen relationships and in turn build trust, improve problem solving, spark innovation and create a people centered workplace.
Throughout this book, the depth of Dr. Bridbord’s business and clinical experience shines through in her warmth and empathy, the clarity of her observations, the intelligence of her probing, reflective questions and her skilled guidance through self assessments and practical exercises. She is a person who deeply cares about our relationships with each other, the most essential dimension of being human. Ultimately, this is a book that will transform not only your workplace experience, but also your life. I highly recommend it. Fran Parker, LCSW Executive Coach
The relationship driven leader accredits essential and immeasurable value to an individual’s ability to maximize an often untapped form of leadership potential in any given professional's ability through a psychological focus on the complexity of relationships.
People so often ask, “Do you like the people you work with?” While a fair question, what Dr. Bridbord poses instead, is to go deeper. Much deeper. From self awareness, to goal setting, to conflict resolution, this book dives into the varied intricacies of work place relationships and how to understand, reflect, and maximize them and in tandem yourself.
As a young woman in the workplace myself, I cannot begin to quantify the importance of relationships in a professional setting. It goes so far beyond team building and bringing one another up. It manifests in oneself, fueling the leader inside.
As Dr. Bridbord so eloquently points out, leadership is an ongoing habit and skill that everyone needs to continuously exercise. I could not recommend this book more highly to anyone looking to better understand how oneself, those around you, and the ties you have amongst each other help you on your path to success.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book as a Goodreads giveaway.
Overall, I thought Dr. Bridbord does a great job pulling together different concepts from what we typically think of as organizational management and relational/social psychology.
Indeed, as I was reading, I thought about how this would have been a useful addition to my reading back when I was taking leadership and organizational management classes as part of my grad program. I would definitely recommend it to students in any sort of administrative program. Unlike some books on psychology/social theory, what Dr. Bridbord presents are practices grounded in the realities of the workplace, and unlike some books on organizational management, this book is also grounded in the realities of humans as social animals, not just cogs in the machine.
I don't know how much I'll be able to pull into my practice as a teacher, since the workplace dynamics just are quite a bit different, but I definitely think that some of these practices will help me strengthen my abilities to collaborate with colleagues, admin and families, which is so necessary in this day and age.
[Disclosure: I received a copy of this book as a part of my work, but I would have purchased & read it myself anyway!]
